Dr. Daniel F. Mahony President

w Ph.D in sport management from Ohio State

Dr. Daniel F. Mahony became Winthrop University’s 11th president on July 1, 2015, after serving for seven years as dean of the College of Education, Health, and Human Services and a professor of sport management at Kent State University in Ohio. Dr. Mahony also spent 13 years as a faculty member and administrator at the University of Louisville where his positions included sport administration program director, department chair, associate dean, assistant provost, and associate provost. Prior to his faculty and administrative positions, Dr. Mahony worked in both public accounting and intercollegiate athletics. He earned a B.S. in accounting from Virginia Tech, an M.S. in sport management from West Virginia University, and a Ph.D. in sport management from Ohio State University. He is an active researcher in the areas of sport consumer behavior and intercollegiate athletics and has published more than 60 articles in various refereed journals, several book chapters, and one book. Dr. Mahony received the 2007 Earle F. Zeigler Award from the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) for his research contributions to the field. He is a NASSM Research Fellow and served as the association’s president from 2003-2004. Dr. Mahony is the recipient of the 2015 McInnis/Ryan Award from the American Association of University Administrators (AAUA), which recognized his principled and ethical leadership practices, and his scholarship regarding issues of justice and ethics in college, high school and professional sport. Originally from Clinton, New Jersey, Dr. Mahony has been married for more than 20 years to wife Laura, with whom he has two children, son Gavin and daughter Elena.

EAGLE FIELD Winthrop’s lacrosse team plays its home games at beautiful Eagle Field. The 1,600 seat facility has hosted Big South Championships, many top collegiate teams and professional soccer matches. Eagle Field hosted its first collegiate lacrosse match on Friday, February 15, 2013 when the Eagles hosted Marquette University.

athletic director at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington, was hired as Winthrop’s athletic director in the summer of 2016. Halpin is responsible for the administration of all aspects of Winthrop’s NCAA Division I athletics program. In his role, he provides strategic leadership and direction for a program that places a priority on academic achievement and athletic excellence. Over the past five years at EWU Halpin served in multiple roles, most recently as deputy athletic director overseeing a wide range of responsibilities covering all external operations including development, marketing, com-

munications, ticketing, sponsorships, licensing, special projects, and special events. He was also the sport supervisor for the men’s and women’s tennis programs. Halpin’s first year at EWU was spent as the director of corporate partnerships for their multi-media rights partner, which has since been acquired by Learfield, generating corporate revenue for the EWU Athletic Department. Halpin received a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Washington State University in 2015 and an M.A. in sport administration from Gonzaga University in 2008, where he has taught as an adjunct

Academic & Student-Athlete Services Winthrop Athletics is strongly committed to the welfare and support of its student-athletes through its Academics, Student Services and Compliance offices. A variety of resources are available to student-athletes in the Rock Hill Coca-Cola Academic Resource Center which is housed in the Winthrop Coliseum. The academic staff works closely with its student-athletes throughout their entire experience at Winthrop to ensure their academic success.

Athletic Training Winthrop provides five full-time certified athletic trainers along with three graduate assistant trainers who are dedicated to attaining excellence in all aspects of sports medicine. Led by the veteran head athletic trainer Jeff Lahr, the staff works hard to deliver the highest quality health care to all of its student-athletes. Lahr, the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Training, is in his 20th year at Winthrop. Several students enrolled in the University’s athletic training program are also involved in helping with daily training room and game management duties. The University athletic training department is teamed up with Dr. William Graham, who serves on staff at Ortho Carolina-Pineville, to provide the best healthcare for its student-athletes.

Strength & Conditioning Since Winthrop began its Strength and Conditioning programa little over 10 years ago, it has become a key component to the success of Winthrop Athletics. The program was created to aid in injury prevention and improve athlete performance. All student-athletes receive personal instructions and attention from head strength coach Hayes Galitski and his staff that includes assistant coach Mike Rhoades and graduate assistants. Galitski is responsible for designing and implementing the strength and conditioning programs for all 18 sports teams. He works closely with each individual coaching staff to design a program that is geared for that particular sport. Winthrop offers a modern and well-equipped strength and conditioning facility in the coliseum as well as the baseball stadium.

Julika Blankenship was hired as the second head coach in Winthrop lacrosse history in June of 2016. Blankenship joined the Eagle program from Queens University in Charlotte where she coached the Royals from 2013-2016 Queens flourished under Blankenship, winning three consecutive South Atlantic Conference Tournament titles and making the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2016 which included a first-round victory and appearance in the Elite Eight. In three years at the helm of the Royals, Blankenship compiled a 44-12 overall record and a perfect 22-0 conference record. She was twice named the South Atlantic Coach of the Year and her squad earned a top 15 ranking each of her three seasons. Prior to her stint at Queens, Blankenship guided the women's lacrosse program at Washington College in Maryland for five seasons, amassing a 49-32 overall record. She started her collegiate coaching career at University of California-Davis where she was an assistant coach for one year. As a student-athlete, Blankenship had a standout career at Gettysburg College. She finished her career as the all-time leader in both points and assists. As a senior captain, she led the Bullets to their third consecutive Centennial Conference Championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals in 2004. She was named a first team All-American by the IWLCA/US Lacrosse, Inside Lacrosse, and Womenslacrosse.com and was selected as the Centennial Conference and ECAC Southern Player of the Year. Blankenship, who was also a second team Inside Lacrosse All-American as a junior, put up back-to-back 100-point seasons in her final two years with the Bullets, breaking the single-season school record for assists in each of those seasons. Blankenship earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish from Gettysburg College in 2004 and earned a master's degree in psychology from Washington College in 2008.

Kayla Minner was added to the Winthrop coaching staff in July of 2016. Minner joined the Eagles after coaching for two seasons under Blankenship at Queens University of Charlotte. Prior to joining the Royals staff in the fall of 2014, Minner was a graduate assistant with the Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team. She served as the primary assistant coach from 2013-2014 and worked with the student-athletes on weight training and skill development. Minner played collegiately at Mercyhurst University. In her four-year career, she totaled 136 goals and 55 assists for the Lakers. She was named the team captain her junior and senior seasons and was also an All-PSAC First-Team selection both years. She was also an IWLCA Senior All-Star and a member of the IWLCA Division II Academic Honor Squad in 2013. Minner graduated from Mercyhurst in 2013 with a double major in early childhood education and special education. She earned her master's degree from Bloomsburg in education with a focus in student affairs.
