WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE POWDER ROOM? There’s something about this little utilitarian afterthought! These spaces are easy to forget, but almost every guest in the house uses it. You can do a lot with it, since you’re not spending a lot of time there.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

Items pictured may not appear in final rooms. Contact designer for details.

IN THE PHOTOS 1. Antique carded-and-gilded mirror, Italian c. 1890 2. Everly sconce, Hinkely Lighting 3. Cloth of Gold, Ralph Lauren Paint 4. Wooden rosette, hand-finished by designer 5. “Celebrations VI” by Richmond artist Holly Markhoff

Being that I work on a lot of older spaces, I try hard not to undo what’s good. I kept the original tile and a corner sink that’s porcelain over cast iron. The best thing is to do as little as possible without harming the space.

WHAT KIND OF MOOD WERE YOU TRYING TO EVOKE? Over the top! I was fortunate enough to stay at the Inn at Little Washington in a room with a bathroom that was apparently inspired by something at Versailles, and that’s what I thought of.

WHAT’S THE “STEAL THIS IDEA” FEATURE THAT GUESTS CAN TAKE AWAY? I hope they will see it’s worthwhile to save original elements in an old house. They add layers of authenticity.
