richmond baptist church FROM THE PASTOR Happy New Year! GK Chesterton once said “The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. Unless a man starts on the strange assumption that he has never existed before, it is quite certain that he will never exist afterwards. Unless man be born again, he shall by no means enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.”  The new year is an opportunity to start afresh. To put aside old habits and make new ones. To put off the desires of the flesh and to grab hold of things that are right and true and good.

God has given each of us a new beginning in Christ. We have been forgiven, we have been set free, we have been born again into new life and new hope. All of this by God’s grace. God didn’t need us to be good or righteous before he saved us, but once saved he desires that we seek him first, putting on our new nature and living for Jesus our King. He doesn’t ask that we do this alone, he has given us the Holy Spirit to help and to guide us. In Christ you have been forgiven, for that sin you feel you cannot break, for that action that you wanted to take but didn’t. The Holy Spirit works in us and with us to renew our thoughts and habits, our words and actions. As a new year starts it might be worth asking, in prayer and in your heart, is there an attitude, a habit, a rut, that

you can decide to conquer this year. Decide with the Holy Spirit to get free of the sin that so easily entangles! Is there something that you always want to do, to reach out, to love or to serve, that you have never quite had the courage to do? Decide with the Holy Spirit to make this the year that you step out in faith and do it! It might be that this year you have to decide who you will live for. Yourself or King Jesus? Make 2012 the year that you submit your will, your desires, your passions and your goals to him that knows you best and wants the best for you. I am excited to see what God will do in you and in me and in our church this year. My prayer is that 2012 is a productive year for you and for Richmond Baptist Church as we worship our Lord, serve our King and rest in the arms of our Saviour. To him be the glory! Elliot
