Katie Chan is one of the province’s top up-and-coming hockey talents. She began her puck journey, after moving from Toronto to Richmond, with Seafair Minor Hockey Association, and spent nine years playing on their top rep teams. Chan also played five seasons with the BC Bears, an elite boys spring hockey program. After her peewee year, Katie switched over to girls’ hockey, playing for the Richmond Ravens and Fraser Valley Rush, before transferring over to Delta Hockey Academy, where she currently plays.

Her proudest achievement was being named to Team BC U18 as a double under-ager in 2017 and then again as an under-ager in 2018 where she helped her team win the bronze medal at the Canada Winter Games. After being recruited by many NCAA Division 1 schools, Chan accepted a full-ride scholarship offer from Colgate University, a renowned liberal arts college in New York with one of the top female hockey programs.

She enjoys sports of all kinds. In 2018, she helped Steveston London win the Grade 9 provincial basketball title and was named a tournament all-star. In addition to her athletic abilities, Chan has a passion for music and plays six different instruments. Katie’s older sister Jessie is a dancer and will be attending McMaster next September. Her mom, Marilyn, and dad, Rob, are proud hockey parents who never miss a game! 1. How do you stay healthy in Richmond? Going on bike rides, walks, and runs around Steveston Park and using the community centre gyms. 2. What’s your favourite slice of nature in Richmond? The water views from the docks in Steveston’s Fisherman’s Wharf, overlooking mountains in the distance. 3. What’s top of your bucket list? Bungee jumping in an exotic place like Bali or Costa Rica. 4. What’s your favourite food? It is a tie between pho from Steveston Vietnamese or su-

Steveston Village because of the sense of community and history. I love the energy from all the tourists checking out the shops. 6. If Richmond was a celebrity, who would it be? I think it would be Jackie Chan because, as an actor, film director, martial artist, producer, stuntman and singer, his versatility represents the diverse opportunities in Richmond. 7. What other city compares to Richmond and why? White Rock best compares to Richmond because it is still relatively small like Richmond, but also has a similar village like Steveston. 11. Who’s your favourite sports team? Toronto Maple Leafs.
