The Little Woody’s Dark and Mustachioed is a “rum”–derfully balance of sweet and sour

There are hidden gems, and then there are hidden gems. Arcadia’s The Little Woody – housed in a signless, nondescript maroon building next to Camelback Flower Shop on Indian School and 42nd Street – is both. “Other than a little owl in the window, you would never know we were here, unless someone told you,” says general manager Eric Massey, noting their business is almost entirely word of mouth. Lucky for The Little Woody, its cocktail program combined with its dark-yet-welcoming, cabin-like ambiance, always has people talking. Among its most popular cocktails is the Dark and Mustachioed ($10). “Guests always ask about the name,” Massey says. “It’s a two-part answer. First, it is a riff on the classic Dark and Stormy rum cocktail. Second, local mixology legend Travis Nass – known for his handlebar mustache – helped us dream it up, so we wanted to show him some love as well.” It starts with Don Q Anejo Rum, known for its rich texture and cognac-like finish with hints of oak and vanilla, in a shaker with ice. Velvet Falernum, a sweet liqueur often used in Caribbean-inspired cocktails, is then added. “Next, we add a ginger puree that we make in-house as well as fresh lime juice to the mix,” says Massey, who then shakes and strains it into a Collins glass with ice. “We top it with a float of Angostura Bitters to balance out the sweetness and add one last tart punch.” It’s garnished with mint and a Luxardo cherry and then served with a mustache straw, tailor-made for photo opps.
