ne of the underlying notions of being a writer and editor is that people entrust you to tell their life stories, or at least give a glimpse into who they are. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly, and I always find myself enthralled with learning how they got to where they are, what hurdles they had to overcome, and what advice they share. Such is the case with this month’s feature on power couples (page 44). The idea struck me many months ago, and I knew I had to run with it. So many people are out to make a difference in the world, but it’s definitely something special when you find your partner in that same mission. That’s exactly who these couples are, and I hope you find them as inspiring as I did. Even our cover story on former actress Natalie Marston-Salem (page 40) highlights another power couple. Together, with her husband, Marston-Salem opened Fountain Hills Recovery in honor of her late father and with a goal of helping others on their road to healing. he was six years old, and it was the biggest day of her young life. Little Julie Xander had been working hard the past few months to perfect her spins, her dips, and her hand movements. Every day after school was spent practicing. She was a little girl bursting with excitement, and it was her day to shine.

up close Her mother had helped tie her hair up in bows, and the recital was just minutes away from starting. Even now, her dance teacher was grinning with excitement. Young Julie Xander knew she was one of the best in the class. She may not have a cookie-cutter ballerina body like some of the girls, but she was a good dancer. That is when she heard the words that would haunt her for years: “Julie, honey,” her teacher said. “You know your spot is in the back.” Xander grew up the only daughter in a family of three boys. She spent her weekdays roughhousing in their home in Scottsdale and her weekends skiing and camping in the wilds of Northern Arizona. Despite her tomboyish tendencies, she loved dance classes and baton twirling, two activities that always seemed to highlight her weight. “As a child, I was always selfconscious about my weight,” Xander says. “As a dancer and championship baton twirler, not having the skinny little body was very hard. I was always placed in the back row, coaches would ask about my eating habits, and the other little girls didn’t want to play with me. The fashionable, cute girl clothing didn’t come in my size. I went seasons wearing boys clothes because those hid my shape.” What made it more difficult was that Xander’s family came from a long line of fashion-forward entrepreneurs. Her grandmother started one of the first all-women’s department stores in New York, and her grandfather was one of the most prestigious dress buyers in the Big Apple. Not surprisingly, Xander grew up surrounded by fashion, making it a big conversation topic during her formative years and an important aspect of her life. As an adolescent, Xander recalls struggling with body issues and selfconfidence. She couldn’t fit in the clothes she most admired and felt out of place in a world seemingly obsessed with being a certain size.

Turning a New Leaf “As I entered adulthood, my views on healthy living, staying active, and keeping

fit started to shift. It also changed the way my body was feeling and functioning,” Xander says. “One day, I was shopping and the clothes fit me in a whole different way. The fashions I had always admired were in my size and they seemed to hug me in brand new places.” Xander experienced a whole new perspective on life after that moment. She began balancing workouts with eating right. She incorporated hormone therapy, cryotherapy, massage and vitamins into her new healthy lifestyle. She found

confidence in fashion, and launched a blog to share her experiences. “I have always been a person who loved to share, and, for years, people were seeing this transformation in me,” Xander says. “They wanted to know how they could transform their lives; find confidence, health and beauty; and be the best they could be. They wanted to know where to eat, how to work out, and how to build themselves up. I had answers to that, and blogging was a way to pass on my favorite things to a much larger group of people.” Xander’s blog, Lifestyle Jules (www.lifestylejules.com), encourages “beauty from the inside out” and falling in love with taking care of yourself. As her blog increased in popularity, she incorporated videos into her social media sites. Her Facebook now boasts more than 10,000 eager followers. Xander has truly taken center stage in a big way. “I love that anyone can follow me to get great advice on fashion, fitness, beauty and wellness,” Xander says. “What was even more interesting is that I now could help businesses showcase their products and services – the very same products that helped me become the person I am. I could bring my followers into their offices or shops and introduce them to amazing brands that could change their lives.” As a fashion and fitness influencer, Xander now offers her expertise to others seeking a healthier lifestyle, nutrition, fashion tips and brand advice. She has worked as a spokesmodel, barre choreographer and has earned a physiology degree. She is also a mother of three and has grown a successful lifestyle coaching business. Undoubtedly, she has come a long way from being that little girl in the back row. “I am my own inspiration, and I believe you can be too. I was the chubby girl who nobody wanted on their team, and now I am a strong woman who can go head-to-head with any great athlete,” Xander says. “It just proves that it’s a matter of consistency, hard work and determination. We all have it in us, and I’d love to help others in finding that.”

Q: We’ve focused on the problems and solutions of fine hair here, but are there also advantages to it? RG: Of course! Fine hair can look stunning, just like all other types of hair. Fine hair tends to be soft and silky. This makes it harder to style, but the flip side is that it can almost glow with a wonderful, natural shine. Those with curly fine hair will also find they spend much less time straightening it than their thicker-haired friends. Fine hair is also brilliant for the summer months, when it helps to keep the head cooler. Just like all other hair types, fine hair comes with plentiful advantages, as well as its own particular issues!

From static issues to limp, dull styles, fine hair can sometimes feel impossible to get right. Thankfully, expert color specialist Rodney Gentry, based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, is here to help! Q: First, why is it that some of us have finer hair than others? Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference. Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair. Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. There are also some great products on the market to help with fine hair. I’m loving Goldwell Kerasilk Repower range right now. The four products—shampoo, conditioner, volume plumping cream, volume blow-dry spray— harness the power of natural ingredients like carob in order to create long-lasting volume that leaves the hair bouncy and lightweight. Products like these work wonders, and it is great to be able to introduce clients to them and know how much they will enjoy the effect that they have. Simple things like drying technique can also make a big difference. People with fine hair should lift the hair outward and upward as they dry if they want maximum volume. They should also avoid brushing it when wet, as fine hair can break very easily.

Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments. Q: Can you recommend any quick fixes for those with fine hair? RG: Well, a quick trip to Sachi Studios, for one! For those after a quick fix at home, I would recommend always having a deep conditioning masque on hand, ready to be used as a weekly treatment or whenever particularly luscious locks are required. hen you put your best foot forward, you want it to be spectacular. At least that’s what Becki Coakley believes. A shoe lover from a young age, it took a heartbreaking loss for her to find the inner strength to pursue her love of fashion and footwear. “Shoes had always been a love that my mother and I shared,” Coakley says. “Even when I was young, I dreamed of being a shoe designer but always put it on the backburner because I thought it was unattainable. When my mother passed, I realized that life was too short to wait.” Her mother’s memory fueled her namesake footwear company, as well as her logo, which can be seen at www.beckicoakley.com. I also am playing with ruffled materials, cutouts and flaps. Flats and kitten heels are coming back, too. What advice would you give shoe buyers? I always advise others to really love the shoes that they are selecting. Never settle and make sure they’re totally your style. I also suggest looking at shoes as an investment into your wardrobe. rowing up on an oil company compound in Saudi Arabia, Simone Colgan Dunlap was surrounded by people from all corners of the world. “The experience profoundly influenced my thinking. I learned the value of difference but to question inequality, particularly for women. I felt compelled to take advantage of opportunities that were not available to Saudi women,” says Colgan Dunlap, who is a partner in the Health Law Group at Quarles & Brady. Colgan Dunlap’s passion for diversity led her to work at her college’s intercultural center, to teach in Japan, and, later, to law school where she interned for the U.S. Department of State, taking her to the United Nations in Geneva. Her commitment to diversity and leadership continue – for many years, she chaired Quarles & Brady’s Women’s Forum and is now the chair of the firm’s Health & Life Sciences Industry Team, all while serving on its diversity committee. “Inclusion matters – every person matters, every single day,” Colgan Dunlap says. “Employing a diversity of thought, creativity and experience to understand each other is what makes us all better.”

Why are diversity issues so dear to your heart? Diversity was a fact of life growing up. My mom is from India, and my dad is from Minnesota; we are a melting pot. Embracing differences and how they can enrich life was a natural by-product of that environment. How did your mom inspired you? Calling my mom a strong woman is an understatement. She moved by herself to Saudi Arabia in the 1970s to work for an oil company, bucking multiple traditions. I have definitely been inspired by her example. Why law? I actually started out wanting to be a physician because I wanted to help people. When I spoke to practitioners in the field, they shared the less idealistic view of the profession so I decided to explore other options. Through law, I can act as an advocate for my clients and help them solve problems in a practical way. Health care law was a good fit given my initial interest in medicine. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

udy Montijo is living proof that our worst decisions often instigate our best. In 2013, after a near-fatal car accident and years of poor judgment jeopardized his life, Montijo traded a toxic lifestyle for the opportunity to help others learn from his mistakes. These days, the professional speaker and certified yoga instructor shares his experiences with corporate companies, collegiate athletes and school-aged children, communicating the importance of self-betterment through his sophisticated, yet spiritual, wardrobe. “I’m always wearing mala beads,” he says of his trademark accessory, which is a string of beads commonly used in prayer and meditation rituals. “They help me stay grounded and remind me to breathe. Whether I’m in a suit, buttondown or T-shirt, I like to coordinate the appropriate color of stones on my wrist to what I’m wearing.” On and off the clock, the former University of Arizona football player is wary of trends, leaning more toward simple, clean-cut pieces from Nordstrom and lululemon that strengthen his professional image. Montijo’s favorite outfit, however, isn’t an ensemble you’ll find in stores. “I had some custom suits and shirts made in Bangkok a few months ago,” he says. “They fit like a glove.” How important are first impressions? I think it depends on the context. There are times when you want to be noticed and times when you don’t. Knowing the difference is just as important. What goes into coordinating the perfect outfit, on and off the clock? On the clock, it has to be crisp – loafers with no socks in the summer, and if I’m wearing a suit, I need my pocket square. Off the clock, I’m usually in a pair of Vans, rag & bone jeans, and a Spiritual Gangster T-shirt or button-down. Picture yourself five years from now. Where are you and what are you wearing? I’m in Costa Rica or Hawaii hosting a retreat, on my yoga mat, wearing board shorts and mala beads.

s a registered nurse and the owner of Esthetic Finesse (www.estheticfinesse. com), Diane Howard spends much of her time honing in on the finer details to help others look and feel their best. It’s only natural, then, that the rest of her life follows suit. “I’ve got my routine down to a minimum,” she says of her schedule, which incorporates green juices, meditation and an unassuming approach to fashion. “I rely on my professionalism, hair, makeup and nails to represent my style. High-waisted, long, flowy skirts paired with form-fitting crop tops. What is the most unorthodox piece of beauty advice you’ve ever received? Outer beauty fades while inner beauty is timeless. Continuously develop your inner beauty. What is something aspiring business owners need to know? It’s a birthing of sorts. She believes she could have done more to save his life, but the 30-year fire captain was too mired in his own battle with drugs and alcohol. The two were estranged for years, but spoke again shortly before his death. “After he passed away, I felt a lot of guilt. I’m not sure if that’s the right word,” she says wistfully. “There was a little bit of denial about him having the issues as severe as he did. I wished I had tried harder to get him the help that he needed.” That’s easy to say in hindsight. But the forward-thinking Marston-Salem and her husband, John Salem, wanted to help others emerge from this downward spiral. So, last year, they opened Fountain Hills Recovery, a drug and alcohol treatment center that provides high-end care with a wide range of options. The initial goal was to bring awareness to the struggles of first responders, firefighters, law enforcement officers and veterans with substance abuse issues, as addiction among those groups is more common than one might think. MarstonSalem says it’s often overlooked because they are prideful and tend to keep their problems to themselves. Even so, since its opening, Fountain Hills Recovery has seen many different types of individuals seeking help for addiction, from doctors and lawyers to athletes and college students.

“This disease doesn’t discriminate based on your social status or your career,” Marston-Salem says. “It’s an epidemic and the damage it does to families is heartbreaking.” In her clinic that overlooks Fountain Hills’ namesake park, Marston-Salem says, “This is dedicated to my father and his memory. That passion drives us and our business. We wanted the best possible treatment center as far as our clinical programs and amenities.” Fountain Hills Recovery provides inpatient care, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient programs. In addition, detox services are available. “Inpatient is the best way to get help,” Marston-Salem says. “We take them out of their environment, and the ugliness they’ve been in. We get them away from everyday reminders. We bring them in, care for them, and show them the love, support and compassion they deserve.” Fountain Hills Recovery’s staff, which includes clinical and medical directors as well as three therapists, addresses the underlying causes and conditions that spurred the addiction. According to Marston-Salem, many patients have dual diagnoses, including depression, bipolar, anxiety and PTSD. “We give them a safe place to address their addiction properly,” she says. “It is so rewarding to see those who do graduate from our program begin to get their lives back. The change we see in them from when they first walk in our doors, so broken from addiction, to when they complete the program is so rewarding for us. It’s the best feeling to see that evolution in our clients.” Drug and alcohol treatment isn’t easy, so comfort was a priority in creating the center. Fountain Hills Recovery provides two multimillion-dollar homes that serve as living facilities. The men reside in Vista House, a $3.9-million, 12,000-square-foot home with multiple elevators, a movie theater and a spa. Meanwhile, the women stay in the 8,000-square-foot Sonoran Home, which sits on 11 acres with a view of the fountain in the distance and amenities like the men’s residence. Equine, yoga and adventure therapies can be big parts

of the program for both men and women as well. “We’re proud of the homes,” Salem says. “But we’re not pitching a country club. That’s not our goal. Our goal is to give proper care and a high level of care.” Marston-Salem adds that the patients need to be comfortable and feel safe, which is why such focus was given to the physical spaces and amenities themselves. She notes, “They need to have time to reflect on what they’ve learned throughout the day.” Fountain Hills Recovery’s high staffto-patient radio is important to the couple. Although the facility can handle 60 to 90 patients at a time, the staff allows a maximum of 20. Patients at Fountain Hills Recovery meet one-on-one with their primary therapist to gain the trust they need to delve into “some really deep stuff.”

A New Venture Fountain Hills Recovery is a departure for Marston-Salem and her husband. A native of Yonkers, New York, Salem owns Statewide Promotions, an online promotion company that works on behalf of 1,700 major automotive service centers across 27 U.S. markets and three in Canada. It was the largest company of its kind from 2012 to 2016. Though Marston-Salem is known for her acting career. Born in Upland, California, she started acting in commercials at age 5. “I pretty much did Barbie commercials when I was growing up,” she says. “If there was a call for a glamorous little girl with long hair, that was me.” When she was older, she acted in films and on TV, most notably The Agency with Will Patton; Time Share featuring Timothy Dalton; and Magnolia, a Paul Thomas Anderson movie starring Tom Cruise. Marston-Salem also appeared in an episode of Criminal Minds directed by Seinfeld actor Jason Alexander. “It was my passion, and I really enjoyed it,” says Marston-Salem, who was later hired to play Snow White at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Her mother kept her grounded by putting her thumb on the pulse of her

daughter’s career. Marston-Salem says her mother and her own conservative morals kept her on the “good side of the business.” “It’s a very cut-throat business,” she says. In 2007, Marston-Salem and her husband met at real estate school in Anaheim, ultimately falling in love and marrying in 2010. “We fell in love with Scottsdale and we love calling Scottsdale home,” says Marston-Salem, who has two young children with Salem. “John comes from a large family and most of his siblings live here in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley.” Marston-Salem and her staff are pleased that the facility has touched the communities of Fountain Hills and Scottsdale. She chalks up its success to staff members, like clinical director Dr. Justin Evans and the master’s degree therapists who work under him. “We have a great culture,” she says. “We’re all like-minded individuals. The proof is in the pudding when they walk through the door, and we do everything within our power to give them long-term sobriety. Ultimately, though, they have to be the ones to do the work.” Fountain Hills Recovery’s staff deal with “gut-wrenching, emotional stuff all day long,” Marston-Salem says, adding that it’s important to dig in and expose inner thoughts, something that is usually a challenge for addicts. “It’s a peaceful environment. We give the clients every possible chance at sobriety and give them all the tools they could possibly use to achieve that. At Fountain Hills Recovery, we’ll take the first step with you.” That, Marston-Salem says, is her way of honoring her father “My dad’s addiction took us away from each other for many years,” she says. “It was part of our estrangement. I’m so grateful that, before he did pass, we had a chance to spend time together. “Not everybody gets that chance when they’re dealing with loved ones who have an addiction. I know he’s looking over this new business venture and would be very proud of what it’s becoming.”

MATTHEW AND LEEANN DEARING

In acting, the scene in which a future romantic couple meets for the first time is called a meet cute – and Matthew and Leeann Dearing certainly have a fitting real-life meet cute. In 2007, the actors met starring opposite each other in a play, both sensing almost right away that this was “it.” They got married in 2008, at just 24 and 26 years old, so in many ways they grew up together, both personally and professionally. Since 2007, The Dearings have owned Dearing Studio, an actors’ training facility where they have coached thousands of students, many of whom have gone on to roles in TV and film. Beyond that, they are both working actors who stay busy in Arizona’s commercial market, with credits that include ads such as GoDaddy for the Super Bowl, Discount Patio and Grand Canyon University. Even their two young children have followed in their footsteps. But it wasn’t bright lights from the start. The Dearings began their business by teaching acting classes out of a doctor’s office lobby during off-hours. The tiny (but free) space allowed them to save money to lay a foundation for a dream much bigger than the two of them – inspiring others to pursue their own dreams. It’s a dream rooted in The Dearings’ belief that there is work to be done in the Valley’s acting industry, and they intend to leave it better than they found it. With a vision of never-ending growth, The Dearings say that love is at the core of what they do. The couple’s mission is to spread light and love into the acting industry and the world, while always remaining curious and open to innovation. Throughout their journey, a few constants have remained: sharing the same

passions and dreams, working as a team, and pushing each other to be better while still loving each other exactly where they are, their definition of a power couple. “There are no limitations to where we may end up and what we are capable of doing, but wherever we are – mentally, SEPTEMBER 2017 |

LUKE AND NAJLA KAYYEM What’s meant to be will be – so is the love story between Luke and Najla Kayyem, who met in seventh grade, dated throughout high school, and went their separate ways during and shortly after college, before reconnecting and marrying in 2006. Though The Kayyems are in different fields, both have made it their lifeworks to connect with, support and help others. They seek to inspire those around them to be better as they move forward toward a common goal. Truly, they are leaders of their respective packs. As the owner of management consulting firm Kayyem Marketing, Najla connects people through networking, sales and marketing, and is responsible for launching and marketing some of the country’s most notable mixed-use developments. And with more than 17 years in the fitness industry, Luke transforms lives as a master lifestyle coach, vlogger and inspirational speaker, as well as through his virtual fitness program, The Fittest Tribe Alive. He’s especially passionate about empowering men to find their sense of purpose, and hosts mastermind groups to help men become better fathers, husbands and leaders. Together, The Kayyems are fiercely committed to health living, with a focus on longevity and a higher quality of life – and making that possible for others. They have raised nearly $200,000 for local charities and organizations, including Arizona Baseball Charities, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Playworks, and Pat Tillman Foundation. The parents of two also launched a Health and Wellness Week at Desert Canyon Elementary School, which focused on the importance of exercise, wholesome food choices, and a healthcentered lifestyle. The Kayyems, who are regularly featured health and wellness experts on TV

AARON AND JOCELYN FREEMAN Aaron and Jocelyn Freeman are dedicated to being a new kind of power couple. Focused on creating a life and relationship of ease, alignment and being purpose-driven, they have made it their mission – and have even written a book – to redefine what “power couple” means. Having met four years ago, The Freemans each left successful careers (Aaron as a corporate engineer, Jocelyn as a nurse) to fulfill on their joint vision: to experience financial freedom and contribution through speaking, investing and mentorship, while empowering couples to fulfill their dreams together and, ultimately, lowering the divorce rate. Describing themselves as empowered, bold and purposeful, The Freemans, who have shared the stage with Tony Robbins and were nominated for Phoenix Business Journal’s 2017 “40 Under 40,” are an undeniable example of these qualities. As trained leadership coaches and even ordained ministers who officiate wedding ceremonies, The Freemans recall that as they began mentoring others, they saw their lives transform – and a business, brand and belief was built. Tech for the World:

HAMID AND LAWDAN SHOJAEE

Changing the world through the technology space is the commitment of Hamid and Lawdan Shojaee. The couple, who met nearly 20 years ago and got married eight months later, now run two local software companies in addition to being parents of two. In 2002, Hamid founded Axosoft, a project management software used by more than 11,000 teams worldwide. During this time, Lawdan received her doctorate in physical therapy, practiced for a year, and then became the director of development for Mission Montessori School before taking over as CEO of Axosoft so Hamid could focus on running his new creation, Pure Chat, a live chat software. At the heart of their work, The Shojaees seek to create technological advancements that will outlive and outperform their life expectancy, and, ultimately, make a positive contribution. And their vision is one rooted in humanity: “We want to leave this earth better than we found it, so we build software tools that help companies like NASA, Apple, IBM and many others be better at what they do. We provide them with the hammer that allows them to build what they need.” And The Shojaees are steadfast in their mission and stand firm in their beliefs, such as advocating for greater diversity in the tech space. They launched a female empowerment campaign, #ItWasNeverADress, which went viral – appearing on BuzzFeed, The New York Times, CNN and The Huffington Post – and, subsequently, started a scholarship for females in tech at Arizona State University. The ideals of improving the tech industry and shaping future generations transfer into the collaborative, contributive

The power of community and service to others is at the heart of Rodney Riley and Jill Krigsten Riley’s partnership. The newlyweds – they were married at Sanctuary Resort in February – are passionate about helping those in need. Though they each have busy, successful careers, they prioritize giving back and continuing to grow, individually and as a couple. Jill, an avid yogi and hiker, is a media consultant for Cox Media and a former director of sales for 12 News and 12news.com, while Rodney is the regional sales director of investor services for CBRE’s Southwest region, in addition to being selected to this year’s Valley Leadership Class and a competitive Masters cyclist. ow in its fifth year, the James Beard Foundation’s Taste America Culinary Tour – a cross-country program set each fall in 10 culinary destinations including Austin, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Seattle – has again chosen the Valley as one of its stops. According to Susan Ungaro, president of the James Beard Foundation, the Taste America program was developed as a result of feedback from food lovers across the country, including right here in Arizona, that wished the famous James Beard House dining experience in New York would be available in their cities. This year, the event will take place over a long weekend, with the kick-off reception hosted by Sam Fox on Thursday, Sept. 21, at Little Cleo’s Seafood Legend. “The weekend continues on Friday, Sept. 22 at Mountain Shadows with A Night of Culinary Stars, an exclusive dining event benefiting the James Beard Foundation. The evening will begin with a reception of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from local chefs and restaurateurs as well as a silent auction,” says Ungaro, noting CBS 5 news anchor Sean McLaughlin will serve as the evening’s emcee. CREATING UNDERWATER FINE ART Jessica Harnisch captures dream-like portraits through her camera lens

A

rizona native Jessica Harnisch found her niche through photography and her love for scuba diving. Her combination of passions led her to open Blue Dune Studio, where she produces stellar underwater portraits and captures beauty through her camera lens. Harnisch found her love for photography early in life and opened her first photography business in 2008. Nevertheless, it wasn’t until last year, during an epic dive trip, that she was inspired to open her aquatic studio, which launched last summer and offers stunning maternity, mother-daughter, couples and beauty photo sessions. Inspired by classical painters’ works, the photographer aims to capture emotive images, merging reality with a bit of fantasy.

“The underwater world is something most people don’t get to see or experience, but I think it’s magical,” she says. She describes her artwork, which is printed on textured fine art paper, as ethereal, enchanted, flowy, unique and timeless. To create her mermaid-like images, Harnisch uses her own pool as her underwater photography studio during the summer. In the winter, the photos are taken in an indoor pool, which is typically 12 feet deep. She stays beneath the water for up to 45 seconds at a time, thanks to wrapping a weighted belt around her torso. When asked about her favorite aspect of underwater art, Harnisch states that she loves to get a glimpse into something we don’t see or notice every day. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

“Every shoot is different. Even if I use the same model and the same dress, the water does what it wants to do,” Harnisch says. “It can’t be repeated. There is a certain amount of beauty in that uncertainty.” Capturing beauty in a nontraditional environment has been the photographer’s main goal. However, earlier this year, she started a body empowerment campaign, This Beautiful Body, inspired by the many women she had photographed over the years who felt self-conscious about their bodies. “Seeing all of these beautiful women convinced there was something wrong with the way they looked really hurt my heart,” she says. Part of the campaign is to tell the story of all types of women through her website. “The more stories I can tell, the more women feel empowered to look at themselves with more positivity,” she says. In July, Harnisch had her first gallery exhibition with 11 different mesmerizing underwater images. She expects to showcase her work in other cities during the year. At just 26, Paulina Martinez serves as executive chef of El Panzón y Frida, borrowing from the art, language, folklore and beliefs of many different backgrounds and cultures across Mexico to develop her internationally inspired menu. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO COOK? I was extremely shy as a child. As a result, I initially turned to painting as my primary outlet for self-expression. One day, I tried my hand in the kitchen and was surprised to find just how similar cooking was to painting in how it allowed me to express myself. I was hooked. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BIG BREAK. Actually, it was right here with owners of El Panzón y Frida! Three years ago, they recruited me to take on a chef role at their former venue, Ricky’s Taco Shop. When they closed Ricky’s to reimagine it into El Panzón, which pays tribute to famed Mexican artists (and lovers) Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, I was given the chance to marry my passion for food with my native country (I was born and raised in Sonora, Mexico) and a concept based on my beloved art. It was all very full circle. HOW DOES THE MENU REFLECT KAHLO AND RIVERA? I like to conceptualize each dish based on either Kahlo’s feminine point of view or Rivera’s masculine machismo. For example, I use real flowers and delicate flavors in my sweet potato house gyozas in a nod to Kahlo, whereas I serve our hearty rib-eye steak on a tough salt rock with bold chimichurri to reflect Rivera. arvalho’s Brazilian Kitchen is a celebration of co-founder and Brazilian diplomat Ruth Marsteller’s heritage, and is an homage to her late father, Major Jovelino de Carvalho, who grew up in the Brazilian Amazon before serving in World War II. “The war took him to Italy, where he took up cooking,” says co-founder Phil Marstellern. “I fell in love with Ruth while working in the Amazon nearly 30 years ago, and we put that love into every element of this menu.” This love is evident in Carvalho’s signature cocktail: the caipirinha ($9). “The caipirinha, pronounced kaipee-reen-ya, is Brazil’s national cocktail,” Phil says. “It was originally developed for medicinal purposes in the late 1800s, but it was eventually tweaked and used more for fun than function.” To make it, pure cane sugar and lime are muddled in a glass – twisting the lime so the peels release their fragrant oils – and then cachaça, Brazil’s native spirit, is added. The contents are shaken to dissolve the sugar and then poured unstrained into a rocks glass with heaps of ice. “It tastes like a cross between a refreshing mojito and a limeade with a hint of bitterness, and it’s nearly impossible to have just one,” says Phil, noting Carvalho’s also has several variations, including watermelon and mango. ast year for 2017, Audi introduced its fifth generation A4 sport sedan, which first appeared in 1995, replacing the aging Audi A80. Unless you park it side-by-side with the outgoing A4, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to discern a difference. Though don’t let the similar looks deceive you – the A4 is thoroughly redesigned, rides on a completely new platform, and has a slightly larger body. For 2018, the A4 is almost exclusively a carryover model from last year with the addition of now-standard heated front seats, which were optional last year. The A4 slots below Audi’s midsize A6 sedan and above the subcompact A3, sharing family resemblance and visual styling cues. Like all Audi products, the look

inside and out is that of tailored perfection; like an Armani suit, it’s never out of style. The A4 is one of the smaller four-door sedans in its class, but it is highly refined. Build quality is superb, and it comes loaded with the latest in advanced active safety technology. It doesn’t take much time behind the wheel of the all-aluminum A4 to appreciate the significant improvements. But let’s be up front here – you’re going to pay for all this goodness. Powered by what I believe is the best 2.0-liter, turbo, four-cylinder engine in the industry, performance is 252 horsepower. While it’s not the most in its class, it’s still capable, well-intentioned, athletic and pleasingly adequate. It connects to a seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system. I didn’t like the high-tech shifter, finding it awkward to shift forward for reverse and push a button for park. Slightly wider and longer than the previous generation A4, interior space remains compromised in terms of leg, head and shoulder room. But that doesn’t detract from Audi’s traditional spectacular decor. Every shape is purposely and elegantly sculptured, while the switchgear is gorgeous and machined to operate with surgical precision. Add in perfectly contoured leather seats, the Bang & Olufsen surround sound system, an LED interior lighting package, and the state-of-the-art Audi virtual cockpit (a full glass digital display that replaces traditional analog gauges) and you’re seated in one of the most magnificent driving environments. On the road, the ride was noticeably improved; it was quieter and supple, yet controlled. Handling also felt secure; even when driving aggressively on twisty Arizona roads, body roll was held in check. Overall, the new fifth generation A4 emerges as an excellent execution of a luxury compact sedan, thoroughly delivering the goods when compared to the Mercedes-Benz C Class, BMW 3-Series and Lexus IS competitors.

ctober is a popular time to visit Germany. The summer vacation season is over, and the hillsides are awash in brilliant shades of color. The fall harvest in this country, famous for its wine and beer, is underway. Though Oktoberfest celebrations are often a draw, avoid the raucous crowds and party atmosphere in the beer halls and take to what was once the playgrounds of royalty in the state of Saxony.

Saxony, once one of Germany’s richest areas, was home to such historical figures as Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn and Martin Luther. It was here, 500 years ago, that the Reformation and Protestantism were born. But after World War II, Saxony fell under Soviet control and became part of the German Democratic Republic. Closed off from the West for 50 years, its largest cities were in ruins and its historical shrines

destroyed. Without any controls, pollution dirtied its rivers and skies. Today, as part of a reunified Germany, Saxony is once again flourishing. At its heart, the city of Leipzig – dubbed “The New Berlin” by many – is one of Germany’s most popular tourist destinations, restoring the grandeur and magic that was always part of this area. Saxony, located in the far eastern part of Germany, sits near the Polish and

Czech borders. From the U.S., the best way to get to Saxony is to fly into Berlin and take the fast – and easily accessible – train into Leipzig. A quick 15-minute taxi ride from the airport puts you at the front steps of the train station, where everything is clearly marked in both German and English. In about two hours, you’ll arrive in the city of Leipzig. Another 10-minute taxi ride will get you into the city center.

Exploring Downtown The best way to experience Leipzig is to book a room in the walkable downtown. INNSIDE Leipzig is an ideal hotel while exploring the art, culture and food of this great city. Despite the building’s neoclassical facade, the hotel is cutting-edge on the interior with top-of-the-line amenities. writer and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent time. While in the old town, be sure to step inside St. Nicholas Church. It was here, on Oct. 9, 1989, where people gathered to demand the change that eventually led to the collapse of the Berlin Wall. There is a memorial outside the church commemorating the Peaceful Revolution, where crowds chanted “we are the people,” and Leipzig became known as the Stadt der Helden (City of Heroes) for its leading role in this historical movement. One of the most famous historical Leipzig residents was the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Across the street from INNSIDE Leipzig is Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church). during the reformation when Martin Luther preached there. Later, it was Bach’s home church where he composed music for the choir, and he is even buried inside. A great way to get perspective on the city, both literally and figuratively, is with a visit to Panorama Tower. Take the elevator up to the 31st floor to catch a glimpse of Leipzig from the viewing platform. The restaurant at the top, Plate of Art, serves modern creative dishes. At the tower’s base is the Paulinum, part of the Leipzig University campus. Originally the Church of St. Paul, it was the site of Luther’s final sermon in Leipzig and also the location of Bach’s magnificent organ. While the church made it through World War II relatively unscathed, it was demolished by the East German regime in 1968, taking all the artifacts down with it. The new building today outlines the original church.

Wandering Leipzig As you wander the streets of Leipzig, especially during warmer months, you’ll notice locals and visitors alike lingering at sidewalk tables to sip coffee and watch passers-by. Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum, the oldest coffee house in Germany, is in Leipzig – they have been serving up food and coffee since 1720. Save room for a favorite German after-lunch treat: eiskaffee, a delicious blend of ice cream and coffee. Beyond being a historical and cultural mecca, Leipzig is considered a playground for creative minds. Have the concierge arrange transportation for you to visit The Spinnerei, a few minutes beyond downtown. What was formerly Europe’s largest cotton mill during the 19th century is now home to galleries, more than 100 artist studios, a large art supply store, a funky artistic theater, and a coffee shop. The site is in the midst of ongoing renovations and is likely to be that way for many years to come. On your visit, you’ll be among artists from around the world who live and work on-site, as well as international visitors, including movie stars and art collectors, who show up to buy art from both known and unknown artists. Chef Tomaso Maggiore’s Vegetarian Eggplant Torte ($17 at lunch, $26 at dinner) at his newest concept, Tomaso’s When in Rome, is the result of a culinary trip to northern Rome, where he was inspired by a bistro serving vegetarian lasagna. Maggiore’s variation uses sauteed eggplant, layering it five stacks high between a creamy fondue made from pecorino, Swiss and Parmesan cheeses and his famous tomato basil sauce. fter nearly a year of anticipation, Tucson-based OBON Sushi + Bar + Ramen – a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese fare with Korean influences – has opened its doors at Scottsdale Quarter, marking its first Valley location. “My partner, Andre Joffroy, and I initially opened OBON in Tucson in 2015 after being inspired by the Obon Festival in Japan, an annual Buddhist celebration of one’s ancestors,” says co-founder Brandon Katz. “The sentiment behind the event itself – honoring life, family and fun – is at the heart of this concept.” The new OBON space in Scottsdale, which is nearly 2,800 square feet, exudes a Zen-like vibe with pale woods and large windows that fill the room with natural light. There are a mix of communal tables, booths, patio seating, and an expansive bar area. The menu was crafted by Chef Paulo Im and is a playful combination of traditional and modern techniques found in Asian cuisine. “The soul of the menu is the signature

sushi rolls, which include the Fukushu Roll made with spicy salmon, spicy tuna, spicy mayo, Sriracha and rice pearls; and the Tsunami Salmon, a combination of capers, onion, avocado and smoked kelp foam,” Katz says. “A variety of ramen selections are also available and include mouthwatering options like the OBON Ramen, which features pork belly and shoulder, bean sprouts, black garlic oil and an egg; or the Veggie Ramen, which, as the menu explains, features ‘nothing with a soul.’” Also, do not miss the steamed buns (try the fried spam bun – seriously!), spicy OBON edamame, array of crudos (the jalapeno albacore is a standout option), and “build it yourself” poke bowls. Equally as impressive is the creative cocktail program, which was developed by OBON beverage director and recent Tucson Bartender of the Year honoree, Matt Martinez. Summer: vodka, apples, celery and tonic water. Fall: a scotch blend, pineapple, matcha and soda water. Winter: whisky, nigori sake, barley honey and sassafras. The beverage menu also features sake (both cold and hot), wines by the glass, and bottled and local craft beer.
