The Toughest Divorce Arm Wrestler In Arizona

When the challenges of divorce come your way wouldn’t it be nice to have someone on your side who wasn’t afraid to take on the best arm wrestler in America? That’s exactly what Kaine Fisher, head of Rose Law Group’s Family Law practice, did when Travis Bagent came to Scottsdale. Out on the field of a spring training stadium. And when you think of it arm wrestling can be a lot like divorce. Back and forth. Both sides positioning. Both sides trying to win. So if you want someone who’s never afraid of the moment, with the right experience to take on the toughest opponents, give us a call.

Parisian

Perfection A one-on-one interview with renowned French stylist Jo, owner of Jo Paris Salon

J

o Paris Salon features the lavish, luxurious surroundings you would expect in any upscale locale, but there’s a crucial difference within the welcoming atmosphere, suffused with a familial warmth that puts you instantly at ease. And the differences don’t end there; in every facet of the experience is the evidence of a deeply connected team, each member striving to provide premium-quality services and unforgettably gracious treatment. The salon is the kind of place its owner and namesake, Jo, had always dreamed of opening. With an innate sense of beauty and talent, he began his career in Paris mentored by France’s most celebrated stylists. After moving to Cannes, Jo quickly gained an illustrious reputation as the premier stylist of the Cannes Film Festival, where he spent a decade styling celebrity clientele. But it was another move, this time to Arizona, that led him to open Jo Paris Salon – and the Valley has never looked better. We sat down with Jo to find out a few things about his salon, his stylists, and which products he can’t live without. Q: Your salon has quite a sizeable staff. How do you choose your stylists? A: I make sure that we don’t have a revolving door of stylists. We try to make sure we hire stylists with years of experience who add something to the team. Everyone has a specialty, and we try to showcase that strength – we are one of the few salons that can accommodate just about any client with any kind of hair. Q: So you have specialists for every need? Amazing! What services do you offer? A: We offer almost anything. Color, cuts, extension, ombre, balayage, perms, relaxer, keratin treatments, updos and Olaplex. We offer services to men, women, and children. We also have an amazing aesthetician and offer Microblading. Q: With such a variety of services, you must use a lot of products. Are there certain lines you swear by? A: We use four different styling lines. The most prestigious line we offer, and we are incredibly proud to have, is Oribe – they’re the best products I have ever used. They are specially formulated for every hair type and super-concentrated. I’m not sure I have ever used an Oribe product on my client and they aren’t absolutely in love with their hair. The smell alone keeps people coming back, but it really does what it says it will do. For curly hair, we are also a Ouidad salon. Our color

line, Goldwell, is the only one that actually has hair preserving protein in the color itself. It’s easy to work with, true to tone color that lasts much longer than most. It’s also one of the few color lines that we found to be friendly for people with sensitive skin or color allergies. We also happen to have our own in-salon Goldwell educator as part of our staff, so the education we get for color trends makes us experts in the line. Q: Do Jo Paris Salon stylists participate in any other continuing education? A: Yes. You never stop learning, and we try to expand our knowledge. The staff is constantly choosing to learn new things and stay ahead of the trends. They love what they do, and it shows! Q: Your friendly, hospitable service makes everyone feel comfortable. Why is that important to you? A: Everyone deserves to be pampered. We do have some very prominent clients, but we also have everyday regular people. I wanted to make a place where someone could come in as they are, have a cup of coffee and maybe make a friend while doing it. Our guests can expect that every experience they have with us will be a great one, from their very first visit.

Jo Paris Salon & Spa is located at 14202 N. Scottsdale Rd. and at (480) 663-8994 or visit their website at www.joparissalon.com

TELL

In May, the woman of the month is Mom. Though the formal celebration of Mother’s Day is on May 13, moms, whether they have kids age 2 or 52, deserve to be acknowledged for all they do and who they are. Selfless, giving, loving, kind … these are merely a few of the qualities we celebrate Mom for this month. And in this issue, we aimed to curate some ways to do just that. Treat Mom to a smorgasbord of special brunches just for her (page 64), pamper her with soothing spa treatments (page 80), or bake her happy with some sweet treats (page 78). Is she a dog mom? Gift her a one-of-a-kind token of love with a pop art creation of her pup (page 66). Or, for the woman who loves to nest, find something for the home (page 98). And for the jet-setting mom, an ultra-feminine piece of luggage (page 97) might be just the ticket. Speaking of jet-setting, though we created an Arizona bucket list of mustsee attractions, activities and accommodations (page 120) you also don’t have to go that far to feel worlds away. Starting this month throughout the summer, head to five local resorts for staycations at a steal with plenty of cool fun for the family (page 85), whether you opt to chill out in cold-plunge pools or beat the heat with a spa day. Look the part at the pool in chic swimwear (page 106), or if athleisure is your go-to ensemble, we’ve got some pretty-yet-practical sneakers just for you (page 104). And for a glimpse into all things mod and motherhood, our feature on stylish moms (page 51) showcases eight women sharing all things fashion and family. To all the moms, here’s to you on your special day – and every day. All the best, Chelsea Young Editor-in-Chief chelsea@richmanmediagroup.com Instagram: @young_chelsea Connect with us! Shedding After Pregnancy - How Postpartum Hair Loss Affects More Women Than You Think. Age 32, Mother of 1

High profile celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Kate Hudson, Keira Knightley and more have all experienced hair loss after giving birth to their bundle of joys. While most women recover from their postpartum shedding, others experience long term hair loss after childbirth. Pregnant women experience the “best hair ever” and the reality is... it’s true! Since the beginning of the pregnancy your estrogen levels keep most hairs from shedding out and the majority of your hair remains in the “growing” phase. In no time you have a lustrous flowing mane, the envy of all your girlfriends! Enter childbirth. Your estrogen levels decline and typically several months later your hair begins falling out, sometimes in clumps! It is important to remember that postpartum shedding is normal, however it catches many new moms by alarm. The best thing you can do is educate yourself on postpartum shedding and hair loss. Helping Moms Through Social Media As the trend of postpartum shedding and hair loss became more evident, we saw a need to educate mom’s who were going through the postpartum shed. Through our educational posts (National Hair Loss Facebook & Instagram), many of our followers expressed the same issue with hair loss after pregnancy.

“This is me right now. Gave birth in Oct & haven’t stopped losing a bunch of hair.” - Tiffani “I lost a ton of hair after having a baby. It’s frightening.” - Jenn “Eeek! All too familiar! What do I do?” - Stacy Many moms have the same concern - is this hair loss temporary or permanent? The best way to find out is a complimentary hair evaluation with National Hair Loss. It is important to learn if your postpartum shedding is temporary or if you will need some assistance recovering your hair. Our customized programs offer integrated therapies to stop hair loss and stimulate vibrant thick hair. Advice from Carly Klein, National Hair Loss Founder Hair loss can be scary, especially as a mother when there are already so many changes occuring. Our goal is to help educate women on their specific hair loss. We know postpartum shedding is normal, however when it becomes postpartum hair loss we need to take action. Growing up, Kellie Pruitt lived for … reruns of Perry Mason? “I loved the law, and in the show, Mason would defend these falsely accused people while seeking the real criminals and bringing them to justice,” says Pruitt, whose passion only grew when her father served on the local city council, which resulted in Pruitt

Pulse UP CLOSE physically,” says Pruitt, eventually enrolling at the University of Texas at Arlington in her mid-twenties while working full-time to see what else might be out there. “On a whim, I tried an accounting class and I loved it!” Upon graduating, she earned a position in Fort Worth, Texas, with Deloitte & Touche (now Deloitte), one of the largest international public accounting firms. “I was 29 and already on my second career,” Pruitt says. She earned her CPA designation soon after. “I eventually made my way to the Washington, D.C. office in 1998, and while there, was promoted to senior manager.” And she was just getting started. “In 1999, my life changed forever when I had my daughter, Harleigh. It was love at first sight,” Pruitt says. “But raising a little one in harsh winters was not so lovely.” So, cross country she moved yet again, this time to the Valley in 2005. “And what would a move be without another career change to match?” laughs Pruitt, who eventually left Deloitte’s Phoenix office before making her biggest move yet. “In 2009, I joined Healthcare Trust of America, eventually serving as their chief financial officer.” In 2012, she helped take the company public. “By 2014, I was ready for another change, but I really didn’t want to leave the Valley,” Pruitt says. And by then, she was married to a fellow CFO and had moved to Cave Creek with her daughter. “So, though I was still in my forties, I decided to ‘retire.’” It lasted all of a month. “I retired in September 2014, but by October I embarked on my wildest career yet – owning a restaurant,” Pruitt says. “My husband and I loved Rock & Vine Bar and Grill, which was tucked into an enclave in La Mirada Center in North Scottsdale, so when I heard the owners wanted to sell, I went for it.” Over the next two years, the business – which she rebranded as Grape Bistro – did well, but she was sick of being the best-kept secret in town. In February 2016, Pruitt moved Grape to a bigger space on the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Pinnacle Peak, and the business took off. But, in July 2016, tragedy struck. “My husband and I were en route to Rocky Point, Mexico, when we got a call from a neighbor regarding emergency vehicles at our home. When I called Harleigh, then 17, the sheriff answered,” Pruitt says. “Harleigh had developed a blood clot in her leg, which resulted in a pulmonary embolism within seconds. We lost her.” Devastated, Pruitt would spend the next 18 months grieving and getting help, often finding solace in hiking, especially Pinnacle Peak. Understandably, she was not a daily fixture at Grape Bistro during much of that time. “Earlier this year, I thought in earnest about closing the business,” Pruitt says. “But, then I met Rebecca.” Rebecca is Rebecca Golden, founder of 32 Shea, a dogfriendly restaurant and bar that helped revitalize the area around 32nd Street and Shea Boulevard in Phoenix. Having sold 32

Shea in 2017, Golden was working as a restaurant consultant. “Together, we forged a new concept, PNPK, which opened in my Grape Bistro space last month,” Pruitt says. Named for Pinnacle Peak – in part due to the location but more due to Pinnacle Peak Mountain’s healing effects on Pruitt – the restaurant has been completely renovated and the menu reimagined. “With the Scottsdale Airpark so close, why not offer ‘flights’ of everything from hand-crafted sliders, deviled eggs and bruschetta to beer and wine?” Pruitt says. “We want to be a true neighborhood gathering place.” PNPK (www.pnpkaz.com) has a dog-friendly patio and offers happy hour from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. It is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. In addition to a massive wine and beer list, the venue also boasts an Arizona-themed cocktail menu that includes a sparkling wine cocktail called Tickle Me PNPK. A dollar from each of these cocktails will benefit the volunteer group Friends of Pinnacle Peak Park, which ensures the park is well-maintained. A must-try: The meatball slider, made with Pruitt’s secret family meatball recipe, which was Harleigh’s favorite.

How to handle fine hair -Ask the expert! Rodney Gentry, Full-service Designer and Hair Color Specialist, Sachi Studios

Q: We’ve focused on the problems and solutions of fine hair here, but are there also advantages to it? RG: Of course! Fine hair can look stunning, just like all other types of hair. Fine hair tends to be soft and silky. This makes it harder to style, but the flip side is that it can almost glow with a wonderful, natural shine. Those with curly fine hair will also find they spend much less time straightening it than their thicker-haired friends. Fine hair is also brilliant for the summer months, when it helps to keep the head cooler. Just like all other hair types, fine hair comes with plentiful advantages, as well as its own particular issues!

From static issues to limp, dull styles, fine hair can sometimes feel impossible to get right. Thankfully, expert color specialist Rodney Gentry, based at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, is here to help! Q: First, why is it that some of us have finer hair than others? Rodney Gentry: Fine hair results when each individual strand of hair has a small circumference, so that individual strands are not as large as those belonging to other people whose hair has a wider circumference. Q: Do people with fine hair have particular problems as a result of the hair’s fineness? RG: Clients with fine hair tend to come to me with a similar range of complaints. While fine hair can look sleek and beautiful, it can be difficult to style. Many clients also wish for more volume to their hair. Q: How do you help them to overcome these issues? RG: There are plenty of options for those with fine hair. Highlights are one way to add volume and texture, and lowlights can work really well, too. It is really incredible what you can do with color. Clients always get a boost when they see how different their fine hair looks after it has undergone a color treatment. There are also some great products on the market to help with fine hair. I’m loving Goldwell Kerasilk Repower range right now. The four products—shampoo, conditioner, volume plumping cream, volume blow-dry spray— harness the power of natural ingredients like carob in order to create long-lasting volume that leaves the hair bouncy and lightweight. Products like these work wonders, and it is great to be able to introduce clients to them and know how much they will enjoy the effect that they have. Simple things like drying technique can also make a big difference. People with fine hair should lift the hair outward and upward as they dry if they want maximum volume. They should also avoid brushing it when wet, as fine hair can break very easily.

Q: What other problems do people with fine hair face? RG: Fine hair can be more prone to damage than thick hair, so those with fine hair need to be careful about over-styling and the use of chemical treatments. Here at Rodney Gentry, we specialize in using products that are kind to the hair, and that nurture it at the same time as coloring it. I don’t believe that there is any place for harsh chemical treatments in a modern salon—they just aren’t necessary anymore. Enzyme-based products can color hair beautifully, and are so much kinder to it than the old peroxide-based treatments. Q: Can you recommend any quick fixes for those with fine hair? RG: Well, a quick trip to Sachi Studios, for one! For those after a quick fix at home, I would recommend always having a deep conditioning masque on hand, ready to be used as a weekly treatment or whenever particularly luscious locks are required. On a daily basis, it really doesn’t get much better than the Goldwell Kerasilk volume line for those looking for added body.

TINY LIFE CHANGES Lisa King pens a book with her sister to inspire positive change

BY LYNETTE CARRINGTON / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Lisa King and her sister, Lauren Daniels, are involved in completely different industries but have synergistically combined their expertise to write Tiny Life Changes: A Guide to Achieving Your Goals and Dreams One Step and One Day at a Time. The book serves as an inspirational guide using attainable steps that elicit change at an approachable level. King has been a pharmacist well-versed in health and wellness for nearly 30 years. King’s sister is a breast cancer survivor and founded HEAL, the Happily Ever After League, which supports women undergoing cancer treatment. Daniels became a life coach and has now been working with breast cancer survivors for 15 years. “We both knew we had a book in us, and we wanted it to be like a journal or a ‘guide,’” King says. “We wanted to put everything we knew into a book. It’s about leading a more positive lifestyle, even if you’ve received a difficult diagnosis or anything you’re going through in life.” The uplifting effects of positive thoughts and actions hit home with King 10 years ago during the economic downturn when she delved into self-development books. “I developed a mindset of turning my negative thoughts around into something positive,” she says. “By turning my thoughts around, it helped me get through a really difficult time. It was the same thing for Lauren. Being positive helped her get through breast cancer.” Tiny Life Changes encompasses the collective knowledge of King and Daniels to inspire others to take charge of their individual situations through positive, easy-to-follow steps. “This book can appeal to anyone,” King says. “Although our target market was women like ourselves, we’ve found that guys absolutely love it. “When you want to make changes, it seems overwhelming,” King continues. “We wanted to break it down and make it simple, and help people accomplish their goals.” The book encourages readers to set goals and make decisions, plus it provides tools on how to achieve goals, also including space for readers to write down thoughts and keep track of their progress. COUTURE IN THE KITCHEN Roxane Kyte’s secret ingredient is the apron

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

Through her one-of-a-kind Couture Aprons (www. coutureaprons.com), Roxane Kyte is giving mothers, daughters and granddaughters a tool to use as an extra-special ingredient during memorable moments, often shared over good food and occasions like bridal showers and cocktail parties. And being the center of attention in the kitchen is easy – regardless of your culinary prowess – if you’re sporting a luxury hostess-with-the-mostess Couture Apron. Traditional aprons may be thought of as a necessity rather than an accessory, but Kyte is changing the apron game by adding a dash of sass in the kitchen. “Producing the most unique apron on the market today came about after years of designing and hand-sewing stylish aprons for my friends’ daughters’ bridal showers,” Kyte says. From there, Couture Aprons was born and has since been featured on the Phoenix Fashion Week runway, a defining moment in the Couture Aprons story. Couture Aprons are a flirty kitchen addition for women of all ages, available in fun designs (such as bridal or Parisian-inspired) and pair easily with a woman’s wardrobe. As a mother to four daughters, Kyte finds happiness and inspiration for her mixed-pattern aprons from all the women in her life. Couture Aprons are made from fine materials including 100 percent premium cotton, linen, silk and leather. Kyte scouts vintage markets for unspoiled linens, embellished buttons, and embroidered bibs to incorporate into her unique designs. Swarovski crystals are added for sparkle, and every apron comes with the brand’s signature detachable necklace and flower pin. In fact, Kyte employs an in-house jeweler to make sure every vintage pearl and rhinestone button is perfectly applied to her creations. Kyte notes that the glamorous, yet functional, aprons are all about the lovely details, especially when it comes to the finishing touches. “The aprons make me so happy,” Kyte says. “Sometimes I want to cry with joy because each apron has so much personality and beauty. They spark love and scream ‘all eyes on me, pretty please!’”

Pulse HIS STYLE

FROM THE GYM TO GQ Brandon Burden takes his confident style beyond the weight room

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY JAMES PATRICK

When he’s not perfecting his clients’ chiseled six-packs or assisting with their weightloss journey, Brandon Burden ditches his athletic shorts for a more athletic European street-style outside of the gym. “Being a former athlete and working in the fitness industry, I prefer a more tailored, slim-fit style of clothing,” Burden says. Influenced by his worldly travels and a few stylish Instagram accounts, Burden favors simple designs and darker hues that he can dress up with boots after the gym closes. Always one to stay current on trends, Burden keeps an open mind for patterns that catch his eye when browsing stores like Zara and Urban Outfitters. In the gym, it’s all about clothes that are stylish, professional and functional. Whether Burden is training at Maximum Fitness in North Scottsdale or perusing the streets of Old Town, he’s sure to be on-trend, comfortable and confident, noting that building confidence is key to helping his clients look good and feel good. “I love helping people physically transform because it absolutely carries over into all aspects of their lives, one being how they feel when they get dressed or how confident they feel when they walk into a room,” Burden says.

What is your most prized possession in your closet? The dirtiest pair of black Converse sneakers you’ve ever seen. The shoes are covered with mud from Wrigley Field from the night the Cubs won the World Series. What is your No. 1 style tip? Dress in clothes that make you feel confident. You’ll feel better wearing something you love instead of what’s popular at the moment. What will we see you in on weekends? Slim-fit jeans or shorts paired with a T-shirt, henley, or a slim-fit button down with either Chelsea boots, classy sneakers or Vans.

Budding entrepreneur Sydnee DiMascio on her online boutique and style inspirations

BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE

As a young entrepreneur, Sydnee DiMascio has taken her love of retro styles and current trends to open – along with her mother – an online clothing boutique, Syd & Bean (www.sydandbean.com). Taking inspiration from young Hollywood starlets Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid and Olivia Jade, she gravitates toward wearing and selling comfortable, stylish clothing to young women around the country. When it comes to giving style advice, DiMascio says, “Love what you’re wearing because your confidence radiates.” With a closet full of her favorite brands, including Brandy Melville and Steve Madden, DiMascio notes her wardrobe is diverse, colorful and organized. She isn’t afraid of vintage-inspired checkered or gingham prints, while denim jackets, highwaisted jeans and choker necklaces are a few of her signature pieces. “My style influences my career because I can instantly see an outfit put together and imagine how it’d look on camera,” DiMascio says. When she’s not creating trendy looks for herself, her friends or her online boutique, you can find DiMascio hitting the golf course to perfect her swing. “On weekdays, I’m pretty casual in leggings or jeans and a T-shirt, and, on weekends, it’s all about golf attire during the day and a well put-together outfit at night.”

What’s your favorite thing about owning your own business? It lets me be creative and share my creativity with others. What’s a quote you live by? “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” What is your go-to outfit for a night on the town? I love a denim skirt with a black belt and a black bodysuit.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, we talked to eight women who hold the roles of both Mom and fashionista. From play dates to board meetings to date nights, each of these multitaskers set the style bar high everywhere they go, not letting the demands of motherhood keep them from looking (and feeling) fabulous. Here, they share some of their secrets to staying chic while raising kids. So Scottsdale! May ‘18

Children: Greer, 8; Charlie, 5

What’s a typical day like for you? I wake up at 2:30 a.m. and drink lots of coffee, work on the forecast for the day, do my own hair and makeup, present my weather forecast for Good Morning Arizona (GMAZ) from 5 to 10 a.m., then meet with our team to plan the next day’s show. I leave work around lunchtime and try to squeeze in a workout before picking up the kids from school. Then we have homework time, go to Little League games, have dinner, then fall over (and asleep) around 8 p.m.   Best thing about being a mom: Watching my boys become each other’s best friends. They get along so well and their relationship with each other blows me away. It’s so amazing and sweet to watch.   Favorite family activities: Hiking, riding bikes and taking road trips.   Describe your style: Classic and relaxed.   Go-to look: For work, a bright-colored, solid sheath dress. You don’t want any patterns or prints that look too busy in front of the maps and weather graphics. Outside of work, jeans and a T-shirt.   Must-have item: My planner and my watch. I feel lost without them.   Top fashion indulgences: I probably spend more money on shoes than anything else. Cole Haan has become my favorite for being on my feet for five hours straight for GMAZ. I’ve had four foot surgeries, so if I want to wear heels – and I do – they need to be especially comfy.    Favorite brands: For work, I like Eliza J, Antonio Melani and Kendra Scott. After work, it’s Madewell and Lululemon. Celebrity mom fashion icon: Reese Witherspoon. How do you balance fashion and motherhood? Staying organized. I also love getting some help from services like Trunk Club. I have a stylist through the service that sends me work dresses and clothes for outside of work, too. It’s very convenient for busy moms! Style advice for your children: Be yourself and don’t worry about what other people are wearing or thinking too much. And always accessorize with sunscreen!

Children: Mahek,15; Rehaan, 11; Ayaan, 8

What’s a typical day like for you? My days are anything but typical. My day starts at 6 a.m. and usually ends around 10 or 11 p.m. In those hours of the day, I drop the kids off at school, manage to hit the gym, plan out dinner, meet a few clients for my fashion design company (Nazila Couture), work on my collections and custom orders, and help the kids with homework and after-school activities. After dinner, I work for another two or three hours before bed. Best thing about being a mom: There is a sudden harmony between the mom and child, a feeling of fulfillment and purpose. There is this connection and exchange of unconditional love that is hard to explain. Favorite family activities: Having openended conversations at the end of the day about our day. I look forward to that the most! Describe your style: Modern tribal and boho chic. Go-to look: Day dresses with Oxford shoes. Must-have item: A slim belt that accentuates my waist and makes the outfit look more polished. Top fashion indulgences: Shoes by Stella McCartney. Favorite brands: Victoria Beckham and Dries Van Noten. Celebrity mom fashion icons: Victoria Beckham and Aishwarya Rai. How do you balance fashion and motherhood? I have learned to declutter my closet on a regular basis; I keep what I know I will wear and that makes it easy to choose. A great pair of shoes can make any outfit look better. How does being a mom influence your style? I stick to silhouettes that work for my shape, and choose quality over quantity and easy-to-care-for fabrics. Any style tips for other moms? Opt for properly fitted clothes to conform to your shape and accentuate your focal points according to your shape. Style advice for your children: They are mostly in school uniforms so they have a minimalistic approach to clothes and I like that. Wear what you like as long as it’s clean.

What’s a typical day like for you? Since leaving my medical sales job three years ago, I’ve traded conference calls for play dates, volunteer work, and being CEO of our household. Now with both of my kids attending preschool, I get to play a little more tennis and invest in activities that keep me balanced. Best thing about being a mom: They’ve made me a better person by teaching me to slow down, appreciate the little joys in life, and be the best possible version of myself. I know that they’re watching me every day, and I don’t want to let them down. Favorite family activities: Swimming, playing games and going to movies. Describe your style: Casual with some edge. Go-to look: I loooove the athleisure trend. A fun pair of brightly colored leggings, sneakers, and a sexy T-shirt is what you’ll find me in most mornings. I also like looks that easily transfer from day to night such as sundresses, distressed denim and coated leggings. Must-have item: My Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses. I am never without them! Top fashion indulgences: A great pair of stilettos. If I am heading out for the evening, I’ll often pair a casual tee with distressed denim and sky-high stilettos. Favorite brands: Bailey 44, Parker, Elizabeth and James, and Rag & Bone. Celebrity mom fashion icons: Miranda Kerr, Sienna Miller and Kate Hudson. How do you balance fashion and motherhood? I keep it simple. I try not to spend too much time in front of the mirror and instead wear what makes me feel good. I am always on the go, and, most days, my style reflects my active lifestyle. How does being a mom influence your style? I like to look my best without being overly consumed with my appearance. It’s something I have thought about a lot while raising a daughter. I definitely spend a lot less time getting ready these days! Any style tips for other moms? Dress in whatever makes you feel confident. Style advice for your children: If you feel good, you will look good.

Children: Camille, 6

What’s a typical day like for you? Busy! I work for Foundation Medicine, a biotech company with a mission of transforming cancer care. I travel quite a bit for work and am on calls and webinars constantly. Between that and juggling a home life, you can say each day is met with ruthless prioritization. Best thing about being a mom: Being told “you are my most favorite person in the WHOLE world!” I mean … how can you possibly top that? Favorite family activities: Camille is my little girly girl. We love doing mani-pedis, art projects and movie night. We are also a very active family, so when the weather is nice, we enjoy the park, going on bike rides, and dining alfresco. Describe your style: Equal parts classic, edgy and glam. Go-to look: Boyfriend jeans and a V-neck T-shirt tucked in the front with cute sandals or slip-on sneakers. If it’s chilly out, top that with a leather jacket or green army jacket. Must-have item: A “fits you like a glove” LBD. Favorite brands: My favorite bags are from Louis Vuitton in the classic monogram or Damier print. Primarily because it’s what I consider to be “utilitarian luxury.” I buy pieces to love and wear, so I want things that don’t need to be babied. I also love Madewell, M.Gemi, Rag & Bone, Rebecca Minkoff, and many of the labels carried at Nordstrom. How do you balance fashion and motherhood? Like many things in my life, it’s all about maximizing efficiencies. I work from home, so most days you can find me very casual with about 10 percent effort. However, I can pull it together for events or fun nights out with 90 percent effort. Also, I don’t have a lot of time to shop, so I tap into personal shopping services like Trunk Club to do the legwork. How does being a mom influence your style? I put a lot more emphasis on comfort, quality and versatility. Style advice for Camille: One, clothing is all about self-expression. Wear what you want, when you want, and how you want it. And two, a girl’s best accessory is a pretty smile, so show them pearly whites!

Children: Taylor (stepdaughter), 16; Adelynn, 3; baby boy on the way

What’s a typical day like for you? An early wake-up call by my youngest, Adelynn, then off to school drop-off. And I always begin my day with a morning workout. I am then either in various philanthropy meetings or working on my current startup. Nights are always family time, movies or swimming! Best thing about being a mom: Every day helps me become a better person. It has allowed me to not sweat the small things, realizing each day brings new energy and light because of the joy my kids bring. Describe your style: Casual, sophisticated, dramatic and chic. Go-to look: You can usually find me in a Nordstrom-bought sundress with a pair of Marc Fisher or Michael Kors wedges and Kendra Scott earrings. Must-have item: My So Kate Christian Louboutin heels in nude. I can wear them casual with jeans and a T-shirt or dress them up with a cocktail dress for a night out. Celebrity mom fashion icons: Chrissy Teigen has been my inspiration for pregnancy outfits. But when I’m not pregnant, Jessica Alba, Miranda Kerr, Blake Lively and Heidi Klum. How do you balance fashion and motherhood? I think the balance is all about how you feel and being confident in yourself. I enjoy getting dolled up, but a messy bun, jean shorts and a V-neck make me feel just as put together and makes it easy to interact with my babies. How does being a mom influence your style? I have a 16-year-old who watches what I wear as an influence for her own wardrobe, and a 3-year-old who will soon do the same. I want them both to see me as a positive female influence for their fashion choices and find their own individuality in their style. Any style tips for other moms? Confidence is key. Be you, and wear what makes you feel happy. Style advice for your children: Don’t follow the crowd. Find the pieces that speak to you and wear them with confidence. I want my girls to know they are beautiful no matter what brand, designer or look they choose to wear. And advice for my son … always compliment your mother.

Children: Hadleigh, 5; Leighton, 2

What’s a typical day like for you? I co-own a promotional products company, B2B Promotional Group, and, like any working mom, I try and get a jump-start on the day, so I get up before my kids (or at least try), check emails, pack lunch, and get dressed. Breakfast for kids, coffee for me, and I am off to get Hadleigh to school. My business is growing, so there’s a lot of juggling, just as there is with motherhood. Best thing about being a mom: I love watching them learn something new and how proud they are of themselves when they accomplish it. My children inspire me every day to do my best, to learn, to be more patient, and to be grateful for the many gifts this life has given me. Describe your style: Comfortable and casual. Go-to look: Jeans, a great pair of sneakers, and a nice fitting T-shirt is my go-to, but I enjoy changing it up when I have meetings or events where I get to be “fancy,” as my daughters say. Celebrity mom fashion icons: Jessica Alba, who has proven that a woman can be a great mom, fashionable and an entrepreneur. And I think Kristin Cavallari has a good mix of comfortable, sophisticated and sexy style. Favorite brands: Rag & Bone, Zara, Vince, Lululemon, Alo Yoga and Frame Denim. How do you balance fashion and motherhood? It’s so easy to lose your sense of style because looking after yourself is often last on the list. But it is important to make sure you feel good about what you’re wearing. I may not have an entire morning devoted to getting myself ready, but I know the key pieces that make me feel good and I stick to those. How does being a mom influence your style? I think motherhood and fashion in general have shifted my look to be more casual. Designers have made it easier for moms to be both comfortable and stylish. Overall, a lot of my favorite brands have geared their lines toward a more relaxed look, so you can feel good and be on-trend. It’s a great time to be a mom in the fashion world! Any style tips for other moms? Get your kids dressed first – they take the longest. Style advice for your children: You’re never fully dressed without a smile.

Children: Preston, 10; London, 9

What’s a typical day like for you? I get up at 5:45 a.m. so I have time to get a few things accomplished before I wake up my kids. After dropping them off at school, I head to a workout. As the owner of a personal/wardrobe styling business, Celina Style, every day is different and might include a closet edit, personal shopping, or working on a client’s seasonal makeover. At 3:10 p.m., it’s time to pick up the kids and head to baseball, soccer or karate followed by homework, dinner, reading and bedtime. Once the kids are tucked in, I finish up some work. Best thing about being a mom: Watching these little reflections of you develop into their own vibrant personalities. Favorite family activities: We love outdoor activities. If we’re not at baseball or soccer, we’re probably riding our bikes, barbecuing, or spending time with friends. In the summertime, we’re out of town or in the pool! There are even those days when we wake up on a lazy Saturday and spend the day in our pajamas baking, playing board games, watching movies, and ordering take out. Those are the best! Describe your style: I love mixing it up! I’d describe my style as chic, classy, feminine and creative with a little edge. Go-to look: All-white or all-black with a pop of color, which is usually my favorite gold cuff or turquoise pieces. Must-have item: My turquoise from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Top fashion indulgences: Purses, shoes and anything leather. Favorite brands: Saint Laurent, Celine, Zimmerman, Haute Hippie, Self-Portrait, Alexis, IRO, Solace, Helmut Lang, and Gunnibelle. How does being a mom influence your style? I am a role model for my kids so it’s important to me that they see that I keep myself up and take pride in the way I present myself. Any style tips for other moms? My best advice is take a chance every once in a while. Whether you’re a mom in your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, or over, it’s OK to mix it up and have fun with your attire. Style advice for your children: Don’t be consumed with your appearance, but always take pride in your presentation. STELLA MCCARTNEY JUMPER FROM SAKS FIFTH AVENUE

Children: Theo, 4; Oliver, 1

What’s a typical day like for you? It’s very different day to day. I drop Theo off at kindergarten, work with my business (also named Elina Casell) as a clothing designer, take the kiddos to different activities, and I work with charities. Their dad plays hockey, so we also go to hockey games. No two days are the same. Best thing about being a mom: The unconditional love that you get from the kids and how honest and pure they are. Favorite family activities: With the oldest, I like to just watch movies, play mini golf or do puzzles. With the little one, it’s just being around him. Snuggle time is my favorite with both. Describe your style: I would describe it as sexy and sophisticated – it’s a fine mix of edgy and soft. I do like to keep it simple, and I think I have a little bit of a rocker chick in me. I also enjoy very feminine clothing, depending on my mood and where I’m going, but my everyday style is a little more edgy. Go-to look: A great pair of skinny jeans with a basic top, leather jacket and heels. Top fashion indulgences: Chanel purses and designer shoes. Favorite brands: Maje, A.L.C., Helmut Lang, Valentino and AllSaints. Do you style your kids? Yes, I do. I love it; it’s so much fun. I like to dress them in cool, edgy and sporty clothes. I’m not much for colors and prints and things like that. So, I keep it simple and stick to earthy tones. My boys enjoy it too! Celebrity mom fashion icons: Sarah Jessica Parker, Miranda Kerr and Victoria Beckham. How do you balance fashion and motherhood? I try to be simple in the way I dress. More comfortable and practical but in a fashionable way, and then I like to dress up more when I’m going out and doing other things without the kids. Any style tips for other moms? You come a long way with a great pair of fitted skinny jeans, a nice T-shirt, and a cool pair of sunglasses. Style advice for your children: Don’t overthink anything or over style. Especially when it comes to guys, I think that keeping it simple is the best way.

Experience the intersection of artistic craft and desert beauty at the world premiere of Eroica, presented by Ballet Arizona at Desert Botanical Garden May 15 through June 2. Created by Artistic Director Ib Andersen, this all-new sensory experience will feature Andersen’s choreography paired with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3. Eroica promises to be one of Andersen’s most important ballets, serving as a contemporary allusion to the philosophical innovations, personal realizations, and political confrontations that Beethoven experienced when he wrote his third symphony. The creative work explores what it is to be human, with the hope of uplifting attendees and renewing trust in humanity. Vanessa Williams helps to inspire guests at Valley of the Sun United Way’s We Are United luncheon

From the stage to the big screen, Vanessa Williams is an accomplished singer, actress, author and overall icon. On Friday, May 18, she will speak at the Valley of the Sun United Way’s We Are United luncheon at Arizona Biltmore. Always one to support charitable organizations close to her heart, Williams will deliver an inspiring message to attendees about her journey to pursue her dreams. Prior to making audiences chuckle on shows such as Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives, Williams was crowned the first African-American Miss America and has numerous Emmy, Tony and Grammy award nominations under her belt. Not only will guests be in the presence of Williams, honorary chairwoman and Arizona first lady Angela Ducey will

be there to help raise funds used to fight hunger in Arizona classrooms. Plus, VIP ticketholders can enjoy a special reception prior to the luncheon and meet Williams. Proceeds from the sophisticated afternoon will directly benefit Valley of the Sun United Way’s programs including Breakfast in the Classroom and WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks for families in need. Breakfast in the Classroom provides access to a healthy breakfast, setting kids up to stay focused on learning the rest of the day and succeed in their studies. And WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks are given to students from families that are struggling with poverty. The backpacks provide enough food for students to take home over the weekend to ensure the family is able to eat.

“Too many children in our community are not able to make the most of their learning opportunities because they are going to school hungry – with many not having eaten since their school lunch the day before,” says Merl Waschler, president and CEO of Valley of the Sun United Way. “Children who are hungry cannot focus, which has a detrimental effect on their academic career and chances for success. This event is critical because it allows us to change those outcomes by providing children in need with a healthy meal to support their learning.” Last year, the event raised $200,000, which allowed United Way to meet its goal to implement the Breakfast in the Classroom program in 130 schools. Currently, 507 students receive WeekEnd Hunger Backpacks each week.

BEAUTY

Carla Pelosi

a golden touch: Boutiques and Bronzing BY BRITTANY MARONEY

S

he’s a familiar face to the loyal patrons of Sachi Studios. A sage voice among the racks of couture clothes specially shipped in to her shop Boutique Bully, from cities like Los Angeles, Miami and New York. Carla Pelosi is also a trusted ally when it comes to looking fantastic, often giving great advice on the perfect cut and the most flattering tailoring. It’s just the type of confidant the fashionable ladies of North Scottsdale need when looking to get primped and dressed to perfection. “My loyal customers are women that lead

busy lives, but need to look good doing it,” says Pelosi. “I am honored that they trust me to always provide them a great selection of cutting edge apparel that makes them feel confident, young, and ready to take on the world. I think they love my attention to detail and how I never have the same selection week-overweek. Everything I choose to place on my racks is beautiful and unique. Just like the women that frequent my boutique.” It has always been Pelosi’s passion to make women feel youthful and beautiful, so when a few of her loyal clientele confided

in her their difficulties with getting the perfect spray tan, she stood up and took notice. Just a few years earlier her family had experienced a devastating loss due to melanoma, a type of skin cancer. A staunch advocate against the damaging effects of sun rays, she knew there had to be alternatives. After a relentless search she found an amazing solution to the current modern day spray tan. An option that was void of the long-lasting chemical smell so prevalent in spray tanning, as well as being organic, gluten-free, paraben-free, and vegan. The revolutionary spray gun technology allows Pelosi to spray up to 6 inches away from the skin, creating a sculpting effect, and never

spots or runs. It’s guaranteed to be the best spray tan you’ve ever had. “When women feel their best they can focus on the things that matter most, whether that’s their family, their profession or their passions,” says Pelosi. “The last thing they should worry about is how they look. It’s incredible to free them up from those concerns and send them off with an air of confidence. That’s when I know I truly have done my job.” To learn more about Boutique Bully, visit www. boutiquebully.com or to setup an appointment with a Bronzed by Bully spray tan you can text (602) 410-8818 or book on www.bronzedbybully.com. Be sure to ask about the special offer for first-time customers.

THE ART OF WATERCOLOR Carol McSweeney captures people’s souls through her paintings

BY OFELIA MONTELONGO / PHOTOS BY CAROL MCSWEENEY

Driven by her passion for watercolor paintings, award-winning artist Carol McSweeney divides her time between Scottsdale and Montana. Before becoming an artist, though, McSweeney was an educator, a counselor and a school psychologist. Fifteen years ago, she started painting with the goal of teaching children who were survivors of abuse. She began to buy art materials for the youngsters, and they talked her into teaching them. “I credit these kids for getting me to discover my own ‘inner artist’,” McSweeney says. At her home studio in Scottsdale – where people may view or purchase her creations – McSweeney works mostly with watercolor, which she says she finds to be the most beautiful, challenging, frustrating and satisfying of the mediums she has ever used. “There is something about the translucent glow that comes from the white of the paper shining through pigments that delights me,” she says. “It is also a very versatile medium. One can paint very opaquely with the same pigments.” In her watercolor paintings, she usually represents the classic West, from horses and quintessential cowboys and cowgirls to Native Americans and Western scenes. Often, McSweeney also paints people who have lived on the street, those who have struggled and have a story they want to tell. “I have become more confident with approaching people to be my ‘models.’ I have worked with those who struggle with mental health issues, socioeconomic strife, and personal pain. So many of those people are not ‘noticed’ in an individual or positive way.” With a fascination of the human spirit, the artist’s favorite part of what she does is getting to know the wonderful people whose images she paints, as she tries to create pieces that express the uniqueness of a person’s being. After finishing a painting, she arranges a way to send a print of the work to her subject. When asked about her process, the painter says that after she identifies her subject, she starts a plan for the size and the composition of the painting. “I then select a core group of colors to use as the foundation of the painting, often Winsor-Newton or Daniel Smith artist watercolors,” says McSweeney, who sometimes takes time to evaluate as she goes by putting the piece aside for a few days and coming back with a fresher look. McSweeney also teaches private watercolor lessons and volunteers at the Scottsdale Artists’ School. Beyond that, she’s a philanthropist, donating paintings and income from sales to organizations with mental and physical health causes and to children’s needs. Additionally, she donates art to the Free Arts of Arizona auction and the Scottsdale Artists’ School fundraiser. For more information, visit www.carolmcsweeney.com.

Temperatures may be heating up, but luckily, there are also some extra-hot deals and exclusive happenings at resorts, with the promise of keeping locals cool – think polar plunges, igloo-inspired cabanas, and icy treats. So if you’re summering in town, you’re in luck. Five Scottsdale resorts have spectacular specials, from overnight stays and spa days to culinary and cocktail delights, plus plenty of pools to keep you and your crew way cool. Read on to plan your ultimate staycation and make this summer your coolest yet.

Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch alike, the resort features monthly winemaker dinners. Plus, SWB, a southwest bistro offers “Wine Me, Dine Me” dinners, where the culinary journey includes a four-course meal with tequila and wine pairings.

Escape to the stunning desert retreat of Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch, a 27-acre haven in the heart of Scottsdale. The striking property is family- and pet-friendly, and features lake, golf course or mountain views. Even better, Hyatt Regency Scottsdale is upping the cool factor May 1 through Sept. 4, with rates starting at $169 with a resort credit of $50 per room per night.

Music Mecca At the heart of the resort is Center Stage Bar, a buzzing indoor-outdoor space flanked by cascading fountains with live music each night. Every third Monday night (this month it’s May 21), a special series called Untapped features great – yet lesser-known – local musicians, plus drink specials and 25 percent off food.

Cool, Cool Summer The resort’s summer theme is “Chillin’” at the Hyatt, so make plans to chill out at the 2.5-acre water playground, which houses 10 pools including an adults-only oasis and a Grecian-style Water Temple. Of course, there are plenty of options for adventure, with water volleyball and basketball and the thrilling highlight of a three-story waterslide. Keep extra cool by embarking on Virtual Snow Adventures, climbing the icy “Summit” (a rock climbing wall), taking a dip in the Polar Plunge pools, and partaking in plenty of wintry crafts. Guests may even catch a glimpse of Elsa from Frozen. Plus, dive-in movies play every weekend, and a nightly event called Après Beach will resemble an arctic getaway with craft cocktails, games, and perhaps even snow flurries.

Spa Days Spa Aviana is a retreat in its own right,

arranged around a trellis-covered outdoor courtyard that features a French-Celtic mineral pool, a lotus pond, and a soothing waterfall. Its newest addition is a Himalayan Salt Room, which, with its micronized salt air, boosts the immune system and detoxifies. Further up your wellness factor with 27 holes of championship golf, tennis courts, and jogging and bicycling trails with complimentary bikes.

Wine & Dine The resort’s eight restaurants and bars serve a variety of cuisine, from Southwestern and sushi to Italian and steakhouse favorites. And there is always a special event taking place. For foodies and wine connoisseurs

Say Cheers Adding to its unique offers, the resort has imbibing experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Whiskey fans will swoon over the 100-plus whiskeys, including the HRS Republic, a limited-edition single barrel bourbon created just for Hyatt Regency Scottsdale. Tequila fans can sip on a special edition Pathfinder Patron Reposado, also exclusive to the resort, while beer lovers can savor specialty suds like Call Me Mr. Fett, of which just four kegs were made and are available only at the resort. Corey’s aim is to help his clients rest easy at night and enjoy the best things life has to offer. Bird is a Washington native who began his financial services career while attending college in Seattle with an internship at one of Wall Street’s leading firms. (Tim is a founding principal and Chairman of Rowland Carmichael Advisors.) During my visit, it became clear to me I could apply my strengths and help people with their financial futures,” explains Bird. Rowland Carmichael Advisors, Inc.’s business plan is simple: “Put the client first,” and replace the commission-based broker compensation model with a fairer and more client-friendly fee-based system. “We get to know our clients on a personal level so we can create custom plans that complement our clients’

unique ambition and circumstances. The family office and multi-family office model is changing, as are the demands of some of the skills and education needed to implement the vision of the family office founders while developing the next generations,” he says. 2018 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR A complete redesign puts this SUV back at the top BY JIM PRUETER

VITAL STATS: Base price: $72,055

The Navigator was the original large luxury SUV, first coming on the scene back in 1989. Over time, its glory faded as Land Rover, Lexus, Cadillac and others moved decidedly upscale. But with a complete redesign for 2018 – its first in more than a decade – Navigator leapfrogs competitors and reclaims its spot at the top of the segment with gorgeous new styling, advanced technology, and countless best-in-class notables. Navigator is a massive SUV with a spacious third row that even adults won’t complain about. It is available in both regular and extended wheelbase configurations (the extended version adds 12 additional inches behind the third row). The luxe interior is arguably the best I’ve seen in any vehicle at any price. It’s a complete knockout – upscale with a bit of a midcentury modern look. Build quality and materials are impeccable, with rich surfaces of leather, wood and suede. Even the knobs are trimmed in chrome as are the stylish metal audio speaker grilles. The seats are incredibly comfortable and the front seats are fully articulating, with second and third rows that recline. Perfect Position 30-way adjustable seats are also available.

The digital instrument panel is presented on a floating 12-inch LED screen. You can use it to configure the vehicle including seats, pedals, mirrors, steering wheel, audio presets, and climate. Settings can be linked to individual key fobs. In addition, there are physical dials and buttons for the most common functions, and the transmission is now push-button, residing just below the center air vents. All this goodness, wrapped in a new aluminum body, is powered by the 450-horsepower, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 connected to the new 10-speed automatic transmission with its buttery smooth, seamless shifting. Power comes on instantly at any speed. The ride quality is substantially better than previous Navigators, with potholes and broken pavement easily absorbed, thanks, in part, to adjustable air suspension. Steering is precise and handling is aided by an excellent roll-stability system. The new Navigator was named the North American SUV of the Year, and it’s easy to see that it is well ahead of its closest competitors. If I were shopping for a large luxury SUV, this is the one I’d buy.

THE NEWEST, MOST INNOVATIVE TREATMENT FOR MEN.

THE OLD ADAGE IS TRUE: IF YOU DON’T USE IT, YOU LOSE IT.

The power of your erection is based entirely on blood volume. The better the blood flow, the stronger the erection. As men age, harmless activities like sex and sports cause scar-tissue build up along the length of the penis. What does this mean? Less blood flow, possible curvatures due to scar tissue build-up, and…yes. Shrinkage. HammerHARDware utilizes high-frequency, low-intensity sound waves to increase local circulation, repair aged blood vessels, and stimulate growth of new blood vessels and nerve cells. This removes years of micro-plaque and tissue build up. The result? Harder, stronger erections, increased sensitivity, and even greater girth and length. Yes, that’s what we said… you will get bigger. We guarantee it. Don’t lose it. Use it, and enjoy it. Call today to schedule your consultation.

When was the last time you got out of your local bubble? Sure, there is plenty of fun to be had around town, but the rest of our great state offers some unbeatable sights to see and places to stay. Read on to discover our top picks beyond the Valley – and start some travel inspiration for beating the summer heat.

STAY Enchantment Resort: Always ranked among the top destinations in the nation, Sedona’s Enchantment Resort sits on 70 acres nestled into Boynton Canyon – known for its major vortex in the red rocks. The resort is designed to take advantage of the breathtaking scenery with private, one-story adobe accommodations and panoramic views of rock formations and pine forests. Its signature restaurant, Che Ah Chi, boasts a locally sourced menu, even featuring items grown on property, with vibrant Southwest touches. Mii amo: The intimate Mii amo spa, which is part of the Enchantment Group and adjacent to Enchantment Resort, offers three-, four- and seven-night all-inclusive packages in an intimate setting. There are 16 guest rooms, including the Mii amo Luxury Suite with a private treatment room and outdoor fireplace, whirlpool and shower. Many of the spa’s treatment rooms have views of the canyon, and there are five additional outdoor treatment areas, including a dedicated Watsu pool. Amenities include indoor and outdoor pools, a library, and Mii amo Cafe. Mii amo, which has been named World’s Best Destination Spa by Travel + Leisure and “Best Destination Spa in North America” by Condé Nast Traveler, is a must-do for luxurious R and R. JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa: This expansive Tucson resort is a playful oasis to luxuriate, with multi-level pools, a lazy river, three Arnold Palmer golf courses, and private hiking trails. The resort is also home to one of the most spectacular suites in Arizona. Centered on the top floor with panoramic views of the city lights, the golf course, the pools, and Tucson’s picturesque mountain ranges, the 2,200-square-foot Presidential Suite features a spacious living room, a dining table for eight, a separate kitchenette with staff entrance, an office area, a gas fireplace, two bathrooms, and a connecting bedroom – not to mention a massive patio perfect for entertaining.

SEE Grand Canyon Skywalk: Just over 10 years ago, the Grand Canyon launched the Skywalk at Eagle Point, a 10-foot-wide, horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends 70 feet out over the West Rim of the canyon. The coolest part? The bridge is 100 percent transparent, offering views directly down 4,000 feet to the

Luxe PLACES floor of the canyon below. Fun fact: The Skywalk is strong enough to bear the weight of 70 Boeing-747 passenger jets. Havasupai Falls: For a more up-close-and-personal Grand Canyon experience, Havasupai Falls is your prize after a rugged 10-mile hike into the canyon. But it’s worth it – at the end of the journey, for which reservations are required and camping is limited due to demand, enjoy the most gorgeous blue-green water (and waterfalls) and one of the most truly unique “pool days” on the planet. Tombstone: This (infamous) area in Southern Arizona is so iconic that the entire city itself is a Registered Historic National Landmark. It’s hard not to be transported back to the days of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday while walking the same streets they did at the height of the wildest days of the West, especially if you make a stop at the one and only O.K. Corral. Bisbee: Recently named one of Frommer’s’ Best Places to Go in 2018, this former mining town is now known for its thriving arts scene as well as its preservation of Arizona’s tenure as a territory and as the premiere mining destination in the U.S. Don’t miss the Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum, which is the first rural affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, or the Queen Mine Tour, a 75-minute journey 1,500 feet underground (hard hat, headlamp and all) with former miners to learn first-hand about mining days, techniques and dangers. Antelope Canyon: Just west of Page, Arizona, about four hours from the Valley, Antelope Canyon is the most photographed and visited slot canyon in the country. It has only been open to visitors for 20 years and features two options: Upper Antelope, known for the dramatic beams of light that shine through the rocks within the canyon, and Lower Antelope, which features smaller beams but is less frequented by throngs of tourists due to the climbing required to access it.

SIP Willcox Wine Country: The Willcox region, located just one hour east of Tucson, grows nearly 75 percent of the state’s wine grapes. It’s also the source of the most highly rated Arizona wines by Wine Spectator, with 45 wines rated a score of 88 to 90 over the past five years. There is no shortage of places to sip, with both a historic downtown filled with several tasting rooms within walking distance from one another, and a rustic vineyard loop where guests can visit the actual vineyards and see the winemakers in action. Flagstaff’s Brewery Scene: Flagstaff is home to a craft brewery boom so big that, earlier this year, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey formally proclaimed the city as a leading craft beer city in the U.S. Many are within walking distance to each other – or a short Lyft or bike ride – and include Beaver Street Brewery, Lumberyard Brewing Co., Mother Road Brewing Company, Historic Barrel+Bottle House, Dark Sky Brewing Company, and Flagstaff Brewing Company.

TANGY TEMPTATIONS Spirited sippers that pack a citrus punch

Ever wonder why so many cocktails have a hint – and sometimes more – of citrus? The acidity in most citrus works as a balancing agent in cocktails, bringing out the bitter, sour and sweet notes of drinks. So, where does citrus really shine locally? Here are some best bets for tangy temptations.

Il Pirata

Mora Italian A delicious combination of pineapple-infused rum along with Don Q Gold Rum is used to add some serious pizzazz to this drink. It’s mixed with passion fruit, lime and grapefruit as well as vanilla and maple syrup to balance out the acidity. $10. www.moraitalian.com.

Amante Appassionato

Virtù Honest Craft Orange is undeniably the star here. Both fresh orange juice and orange essence are mixed with lime, passion fruit, rum and Ramazzotti – a bitter Italian liqueur. It’s then topped with prosecco. $13. www.virtuscottsdale.com.

Slo Gin Fizz

The Womack Sloe Gin, Bulldog Gin, lemon juice and simple syrup make up this classic cocktail. The addition of Fever-Tree Bitter Lemon soda works to bring out the botanical elements in the gin as well as double down on the lemon flavor. $10. www.thewomack.us.

The Diplomatic Pirate

Sel Get your tangy Tiki on with this blend of Diplomatico Reserva Extra Anejo Rum and Plantation 3 Stars rum. The mixture is combined with a passion fruit puree, coconut liqueur and lime juice for brightness. St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram warms it up with a little spice. $14. www.selrestaurant.com.

Yellow Jacket

Undertow Pineapple and lime are the stars of this cocktail. Tiki bitters is added to amp up the sharpness, and then aged Jamaican rum, Velvet Falernum and St. George California Shochu – a Japaneseinspired spirit that takes vodka to

another level – round it out. $12. www.undertowphx.com.

Tickled Pink

Indigo Crow Restaurant & Bar Sweet meets sour with this prickly pear-, raspberry- and lemon-infused cocktail. The fruits are combined with Tito’s Handmade Vodka and rosé for a smooth, bubbly beverage with some serious zing. $13. www.cavecreekcrow.com.

Bootleg Smitty

The Breadfruit & Rum Bar This tropical cocktail starts with Jamaican rum, tart grapefruit and lime. It’s blended with a non-alcoholic carbonated drink called Pimento, which is known for its spice (akin to a stronger ginger ale), and then finished with star anise, which adds herbal notes. $10. www.thebreadfruit.com.

The Petey

Salty Sow Holy grapefruit! This cocktail bursts with citrus flavor by mixing Deep Eddy Ruby Red Grapefruit vodka with freshly sliced grapefruit, mint, sweet agave and club soda. $8.50. www.saltysow.com.

Smokey the Bandito

Honor Amongst Thieves A little sweet, sour and spice can be tasted here with the combination of smoky Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, Aperol and Velvet Falernum paired with fresh lime juice, strawberry and Fresno chilies that explode in every sip. $13. www.honoraz.com.

Captain’s Grapefruit Mojito

Just A Splash Be transported to the tropics with this zippy blend of Captain Morgan’s Grapefruit Rum and fresh grapefruit juice, perfectly balanced with fresh mint and lime and served in a just-cut coconut shell. $30. www.jwdesertridge.com.

A particularly delicious dish at chef Matt Carter’s House Brasserie is his Maine Lobster Gnocchi ($20). Carter starts by breaking down lobster, making stock from the bodies before boiling them to make a bisque as well as to portion off sumptuous pieces for the final dish. He then combines truffles with white button mushrooms, herbs and butter, emulsifying this into a compound butter that flavors the entire dish. To create the gnocchi, he uses aged Yukon and russet potatoes along with flour, eggs and seasonings. Crispy fingerlings cooked in clarified butter further bring together the classic lobster and butter combination in a new way while providing texture. The dish is topped with Parmesan cheese, chives and herbs to add depth to the flavor along with a garnishing of seasonal edible flowers for brightness. House Brasserie, 6936 E. SIP YOUR CEREAL

Brunch is better with Hash Kitchen’s boozy breakfast cocktails

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Cereal is the best. And at Hash Kitchen, it’s even better. “Yes, we took cereal and gave it the ultimate adult spin, combining our favorite brands as kids with all sorts of spirits for the best breakfast and brunch sips of your life,” says Hash Kitchen’s mixologist, Sheldon Wiley. The most colorful and playful of their cereal cocktail collection – in flavor and actual color – is the Fruity Pebbles ($10) option. “Since there isn’t technically a Fruity Pebbles-infused liqueur, we use Three Olives Loopy Vodka, which, admittedly, is inspired by Fruit Loops, but certainly has a similar flavor,” Wiley says. According to Wiley, a secret way to amp up any fruit flavor in a drink is to add a little spice, so his next ingredient is actually RumChata. “RumChata is made from Caribbean rum and Mexican horchata, which, given its silky and sweet cream flavor, actually serves as a perfect alternative to using real milk,” says Wiley, noting the elements combine to add a touch of cinnamon, vanilla and sugar to the vodka base. Next, Wiley adds some actual milk – which can be subbed for almond or soy milk for those with allergies – to the shaker with ice, eventually straining into a pint glass rimmed with crushed Fruity Pebbles. “We top it with actual Fruity Pebbles and serve it ice-cold,” Wiley says. Hash Kitchen also offers two other cereal-inspired cocktail creations: Coco Puffs and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. “The Cinnamon Toast Crunch is similar in build to the Fruity Pebbles, but the Coco Puffs uses Kahlua and chocolate-infused vodka along with the milk or milk substitute,” Wiley notes. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Charleen Badman of FnB

Charleen Badman is co-owner and executive chef of FnB, where she has earned national acclaim for her richly flavored menus showcasing Arizona’s abundant agricultural community.

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS

Did you always know you wanted to be a chef? It wasn’t until high school when I got into a food-focused vocational program called FEAST that I thought I could make cooking a career. Through FEAST, I got a job at Café Terra Cotta in Tucson, which changed the course of my life. How so? I worked at Terra Cotta for six years, and during that time I moved to the Valley to open a second location. There, I met Chrysa Robertson. In 1994, when Robertson opened Rancho Pinot, I joined her and Chris Bianco in the kitchen. At Rancho Pinot, I met Pavle Milic, who handled the front of the house and would become my business partner 15 years later. What happened during those 15 years? In late 1995, I applied for a position at Anne Rosenzweig’s Lobster Club in New York. She was one of the first female chefs to earn a three-star review by the The New York Times. Bianco’s parents – who lived in upstate New York – picked me up at the airport and let me stay with them. I got the job, and by 2001, I opened my own restaurant with Rosenzweig called Inside, just miles from the World Trade Center. How did you make your way back to Arizona? I came back (to the far more reasonably priced) Valley and Rancho Pinot in 2006, reuniting with Milic. By 2009, we were not only close friends but also ready to become business partners in FnB. How would you describe your menu? We make everyone love eating veggies! Our menu lets locally grown vegetables shine, often with globally inspired ingredients, especially from Asia and India. What would we be surprised to know about you? I am a proud member of the Arizona Herb Association, where we call ourselves “Herbies.” FnB, 7125 E. 5th Ave., Scottsdale; 480.284.4777; www.fnbrestaurant.com.

Citrus Cured Smoked Faroe Island Salmon

Atlas Bistro Faroe Island salmon is rubbed with a tangy citrus zest then cured for 24 hours before it is cold-smoked with hickory and cut into ribbons. Next, it is garnished with a flavorful broth made from Persian cucumbers and fresh dill, and paired with baby heirloom tomatoes, horseradish-infused yogurt, buckwheat lavosh, and a salmon skin crumble. It’s all topped with dried dill and horseradish powder. $16. 2515 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.990.2433; www.atlasbistrobyob.com.

Smoked Salmon Avocado Toast Culinary Dropout Traditional avocado toast gets taken to new, tasty heights as Culinary Dropout layers the popular brunch standard with smoked salmon, a sunny side up egg, and Campari tomatoes, which are treasured for their sweetness and juicy texture. The dish is topped with capers and pickled red onions for a little saltiness and crisp texture. $13. Multiple locations; www.culinarydropout.com.

Scottish Salmon

LON’s at The Hermosa Inn Scotland’s second biggest edible import – after scotch, of course – has long been the Scottish salmon, known to be milder than other types such as Atlantic but with a slightly higher fat content that provides a richer mouthfeel, almost like butter. At LON’s, they crisp it up over a mélange of barley, hearty butterkin squash, chorizo and tomato emulsion, all of which are locally grown or sourced. $32. 5532 N. Palo Cristi Road, Paradise Valley; 602.955.7878; www.hermosainn.com.

Salmon to the rescue! Did you know that eating salmon a few days per week not only helps your heart – thanks to its potent omega-3 fatty acids – but naturally lowers blood sugar levels, aids in repairing tissue damage, and even helps prevent eye problems? Not only that, it’s rich in essential oils including calcium, phosphorus, iron and vitamins A, B and D that help skin and hair health, among other things. But, one can only have grilled salmon so many times before it becomes a bit of a bore. With that, here are some inspired ways to order this superfood at restaurants across the Valley.

Maple Mustard Glazed Skuna Bay Salmon

Lincoln, A JW Steakhouse at JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa Skuna Bay salmon is given a hint of sweetness – not to mention some “spirit” – as Lincoln bastes it in Noble barrel-aged maple syrup and Dijon mustard. Once the flavor sinks in, it’s roasted in the restaurant’s specialty Josper charcoal oven, an elegant combination of a grill and oven that burns clean and only gives a light char to protein, locking in the juiciness and delicate flavors. Once plated, the salmon is paired with Brussels sprouts, golden raisins and bacon and topped with chives. $32. 5402 E. Lincoln Drive, Scottsdale; 480.948.1700; www.lincolnrestaurantpv.com.

Beet Cured Salmon

Roka Akor Scottsdale Here, salmon is reimagined in a way that succeeds on all levels. This dish starts with buttery Scottish salmon, which has been marinated in beet juice, giving it an earthiness and hint of bitterness. The bitterness is then cut with a pairing of sweet ginger miso and the acidity of pickled red onions. It’s topped with green apples, raspberries, and serrano peppers, all of which come together for umami in every bite. $16. 7299 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; 480.306.8800; www.rokaakor.com.

Cured Salmon Tartine

Pomelo at the Orchard A fresh baguette is grilled and used as the base of this dish. It is then topped with a thick smothering of garlic- and chive-infused cream cheese, dill and pickled onions before housecured salmon is added as the “crown” of the tartine. A wedge of lemon is served on the side and recommended to be squeezed over the entire dish. $10. 7100 N. 12th St., Phoenix; 602.633.2600; www.pomelophx.com.

The Salmon Hayek Salmon Poke

J’s Kaiyo Sushi + Bar Poke seems to be popping up everywhere around the Valley, but J’s Kaiyo gets the nod for their salmon poke given it’s delivered fresh each day. Served raw, the salmon is joined by sesame soy as well as avocado, scallions, cucumbers and red onions to add layers of texture, flavor and acidity. It is topped with masago, an acclaimed roe that gives an almost caviar effect and feel. $12. 4412 N. Miller Road, Scottsdale; 480.427.2526; www.jskaiyo.com.

Camp Social With a clever take (and name), this sandwich is made with hearty portions of cooked, smoky salmon and then topped with tomatoes, avocado, arugula and Calabrian aioli, which is much like a garlic-infused mayonnaise, and served on a brioche bun. $14.50. 6107 N. 7th St., Phoenix; 480.750.0506 www.campsocial.com.

Slowly Cooked Salmon

J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician A Valley icon, J&G Steakhouse changes up its salmon offering seasonally. During spring and into early summer, the chef slow-cooks the fish and pairs it with a housemade port reduction. The dish is finished with sugar snap peas and mashed potatoes for equal parts light and creamy as accompaniments. $32. 6000 E. Camelback Road, Scottsdale; 480.214.8000; www.jgsteakhousescottsdale.com.

Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon

St. Francis St. Francis serves up this brunch classic with a twist by traditionally poaching eggs, and swapping the ham for smoked salmon and a heavenly herbed cream cheese. It’s layered on a fresh-baked English muffin and then topped with a housemade hollandaise. The dish is served with a side of crispy fingerling potatoes. $15. 111 E. FEELING LUCKY

Blue Clover marks the opening of Old Town Scottsdale’s first distillery

BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS BY ELIZABETH MARIE

Blue Clover Distillery has an unexpected backstory – and an oily one at that. While Albuquerque, New Mexico, native Weston Holm was always drawn to the hospitality industry and worked in it throughout college, when he graduated he took a wildly different path. “I ran engineering projects for oil facilities in the Gulf of Mexico, sometimes overseeing a 150-person crew in the middle of the ocean,” says Holm, noting some of the processes aren’t too far off from the oil and gas process, which goes into spirit development. “The schedule was two weeks on, then two off, and I spent most of my off time visiting Arizona, a favorite destination of mine since my youth.” Holm eventually moved to commercial construction projects, where he worked for longtime family friends Duane and Scott Koch at Koch Construction, still with eyes toward the Valley. “In 2016, I finally moved to Scottsdale, focused on developing a concept with food and beverage at the forefront,” says Holm, who was ecstatic the Kochs wanted to join the venture as business partners. “With the spirit industry really starting to take off in

138

So Scottsdale! May ‘18

earnest, we settled on a distillery concept early on.” By 2017, they zeroed in on the former 4,200-square-foot property of Eddie’s House, using all of their construction skills to hand-build every inch of the space themselves, from the specialized flooring in the distilling room to the custom oak tables and hand-poured concrete bar top. “We opened in February and completed our first run of vodka in March, which is now in process of being sold at our restaurant for $22 and at fellow restaurants and bars as well as local grocery stores,” Holm says. “After we perfect this vodka, the plan is to move into a few other spirits in the near future.” Restaurant guests can actually watch them work with the spirits at all times through a floor-to-ceiling glass wall. In addition to this distillation show, guests who come for eats and drinks are in for an American pub-style menu with hints of Holm’s New Mexico roots throughout (think green chile on the likes of cheese fries and a cheeseburger). The bar itself, which boasts Blue Clover’s own product(s) plus a full cocktail, beer and wine list, has a very industrial feel and is an indoor-outdoor concept, with retractable garage doors and a massive patio. Happy hour is offered Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. with deals on both food and drinks, and the venue opens at 11 a.m. daily. “And for those asking, the name itself comes from my heritage – my grandparents hail from Denmark, where the color blue is infused through many things, as well as Ireland, hence the clover,” Holm says. “Both were farmers who raised corn among other fruits and produce, which influenced the use of corn as the base product in our spirits.” Blue Clover Distillery, 7042 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale; 480.946.1062; www.bluecloverdistillery.com.
