Cleared for Landing

A historic aircraft – a Stearman PT-17 biplane – recently arrived at Scottsdale Airport piloted by Mike Pfleger (left), a Scottsdale Honor Health emergency room physician and Commemorative Air Force pilot, and Steve Ziomek, a former U.S. Coast Guard rescue pilot, chairman of the Thunderbird Field II Veterans Memorial, and Scottsdale Airport Advisory Commissioner. The aircraft will serve as the centerpiece of the new Thunderbird Field II Plaza and Memorial at the new Scottsdale Airport Aviation Business Center, which is set to debut, along with the plane, next year.

FOOD

Booze and Blooms

Cactus Flower Florists is celebrating 45 years by opening a boutique wine and craft beer store – Vines, Hops & Blooms – inside its Scottsdale retail shop. As the first and only local flower shop to sell alcohol and offer same-day delivery, Cactus Flower will offer Arizona wines and brews in addition to award-winning labels from around the world. Just like their floral counterparts, you can purchase wine and beer online, by phone or in person. Cactus Flower also is debuting a new line of gifts including canvas wine totes, charms and glasses. Cheers! www.cactusflower.com.

Lunchtime Loot

Come lunchtime, fill up on new $7 specials at Asian-American eatery Zen Culinary. In addition to regular menu items, each day – including weekends – will feature a select dish paired with the chef’s soup of the day or house salad for just seven bucks. The lineup? Chicken pad Thai (Monday and Saturday), chicken fried rice (Tuesday), chicken Thai basil (Wednesday), pork belly ramen (Thursday), a spicy tuna sushi roll (Friday), and a wok steak sandwich (Sunday). www.zenculinary.com.

Savory Sandwiches

There’s a new sandwich shop in town, and one with a cause at that. Even Stevens, a Utah-based eatery that donates a sandwich for every sandwich sold, has been rapidly expanding throughout Arizona. Here, dig into the likes of a gooey grilled cheese, a decadent torta, or banh mi done two ways (pork belly or mahi). The shop also offers salads, breakfast, Sunday brunch, bites under $5, and local craft beers. The new Scottsdale location, located in Old Town, has partnered with four local charities in its mission to give back. www.evenstevens.com.
