METALS IRA ACCOUNTS? I’ve heard a lot of talk lately about PrecIous Metals Ira accounts for gold, sIlver & PlatInuM on the radIo and In varIous advertIseMents. What are the PItfalls to Watch out for WIth these tyPes of alternatIve InvestMents? A: Investors need to consult their own financial advisor before jumping into a Precious Metals IRA. It’s true that the metals need to be purchased from a metals dealer. However coin and bullion dealers are not typically registered advisors and often give faulty information as far as which types of coins can go into a Precious Metals IRA. Collectable coins are not allowed, for example. Since all IRA’s are government regulated, people tend to believe that they can’t be over charged. Unfortunately, this is not true. It is important for consumers to understand that the trustee’s main job is to make sure proper reports are made to the IRS as well as making sure the items purchased for the IRA are accounted for. They do not “price shop” or make sure the investor is paying true market price and getting a good value.

This would lead to penalties and taxes being imposed, as well as the possibilities of fines. This could easily eat up 35% to 50% of a person’s “retirement” account. t’s around this time of year that I think we all feel a bit of cabin fever. The cabin in this case is the Valley, and the fever is triple-digit temperature induced. On top of that, August is a month that feels a bit in limbo – for Phoenicians, it seems more like midsummer than the season’s end, and the Valley hasn’t quite yet awoken from its summertime slumber. Part of the beauty in my line of work is finding ways to make the most of this in-limbo period. Though you have to hunt a little more, there’s still plenty to do, new places opening (hello to The Vig in North Scottsdale, page 98), and ways to seize the day while staying cool. You could retreat to a spectacular, over-the-top resort suite (page 57), nosh on food of the chilled variety (page 94), get a coconut-cool spa treatment (page 48), or sip on the quintessential summertime drink of sangria (page 92). There are a handful of musicians, like Sims, who see that perseverance translate into “making it.” And made it, he has. With that, I hope you find plenty of inspiration and amusement in this issue and during this month of limbo. At least we’re in it together.

The wife, entrepreneur and philanthropist is, most recently, the founder of the Alyssa James Foundation, a nonprofit focused on delivering assistance to charitable organizations across the Valley. up close “I was raised in Fresno, California, in a family full of farmers. Growing up in agriculture taught me to appreciate the hard work and the dedication it takes to produce a healthy and successful crop, but it also taught me what to do when resources are plentiful,” says Flores, noting that some of her earliest memories are of her family dropping off spare produce at the Fresno Rescue Mission. “My free time was spent volunteering in local shelters or spending time with elders at our local retirement community.” Pioneering much of this desire to help others was Flores’ grandmother. She not only embodied the ideal of a good Catholic altruism, she also taught her granddaughter about the joys of compassion. “My grandmother inspired me every day,” Flores says. “When she was around, no stomach went hungry and there was

always a cool drink in your hand. She would have given you the shirt off her back. I will spend the rest of my life continuing her incredible work.” This exposure at such a young age made its mark, giving Flores confidence in herself and enhancing her innate drive. She launched a career in manufacturing but soon started brokering her own entrepreneurial deals within banking. Now, as the owner of World Wide Financial Solutions, she is at the helm of a business solutions firm that helps companies reduce costs and increase revenue with services such as microlending, unique lending, and ACH processing, as well as payroll and benefit programs. Beyond her job, Flores is a natural networker. “I love being part of a vibrant community and helping entrepreneurs succeed,” Flores says. “There’s nothing more inspiring than sharing my story and hearing others’ in return. People love to connect in fundamental ways, and I’ve found that those who have the same entrepreneurial spirit as me also have similar philanthropic goals. I started realizing this could be my path to help others.”

The Goodwill Bug In the last few years, Flores has become increasingly more involved with various charities. She fostered fundraising efforts for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Arizona as one of the candidates for the nonprofit’s 2016 Woman of the Year campaign, collecting clothing for Teen Challenge, a women’s shelter in Casa Grande. She has also personally sponsored dental assistance for local military veterans in need of surgical reparations. Most recently, she launched Talk Derby to Me, a Kentucky Derby-themed fundraising event with proceeds supporting veterans. It’s this involvement in so many charities that helped Flores realize her passion and talent for fundraising. Flores says it only made sense to take it to the next step and create the Alyssa James Foundation. While the vision of her foundation is to help as many people in the community as possible, Flores’ greater vision was born out of personal experience. “The ultimate vision SO SCOTTSDALE! |

is to work with youth who are, or desire to be, emancipated. I was an emancipated minor and was blessed to have a community of people and extended family that supported my journey. “I’d love to focus my work on providing resources, education and direction to children who are faced with the decision to become a legal adult prior to 18 years of age,” Flores says. “But I also want to continue to provide services for disease prevention and help our military families.” Of course, balancing a busy work life, an active social agenda and building a nonprofit foundation doesn’t always come easy. Flores admits that mangaging it all has its challenges. “All the moving parts, including the behind-the-scenes paperwork, working on the website, and attempting to connect with those special people who truly have the vision to give is quite challenging.” Yet, Flores handles those challenges through graceful action. “I am a doer, and I’m not afraid to put in the time to find other doers to make it all come together. There are too many people who need my assistance, and they deserve everything I have to give.” Those who know Flores say she’s steadfast when it comes to planning an event or networking with potential sponsors. She welcomes any opportunity to talk about her passions or listen to other entrepreneurs share their philanthropic experiences. In fact, she believes she’s living in one of the most generous and charitable cities in America, often calling Scottsdale “a community of opportunity.” “Giving back to this amazing community is central to who I am, and I believe in paving that path with integrity,” Flores says. “I love telling the stories of the people I am raising funds for and hopefully others enjoy being part of an amazing event, silent auction or party. So many of them will give, knowing that they helped someone special, and hopefully they walk away with the same ‘goodwill bug’ I was inspired by as a child. hari Lott is considered one of the brightest online retail minds in Phoenix. Lott, the founder of SpearmintLOVE (www.spearmintlove.com) might blush at these words, but there’s no denying the fact that she is one of only 11 U.S. small business owners named to Facebook’s Elite 2017 U.S. Small Business Council. Going head-to-head with brick and mortar boutiques, Lott has risen to the top by her savvy brand building and understanding of using social media to power her business. “SpearmintLOVE has grown rapidly because it seeks unique, on-trend products away from the norm,” Lott says. “Telling a story about the product we are selling through visual imagery is a distinct advantage we have in the marketplace.” While pregnant, Shari recognized that new mothers were in desperate need for a place that offered unique, on-trend baby clothing – and that they also desired a visual showcase in which to view each amazing piece. “I was decorating my baby’s room and wanted a Swiss cross blanket as part of the decor. Audiovisual expert Travis Ferger shares his tips on home technology BY DANIELLE ACCOVELLI

t seems like there’s no home too grand nor project too complex for Travis Ferger and his team at CCS Presentation Systems’ Home Division. The senior technology consultant has been in the audiovisual business for more than 20 years, starting at a time when car stereos were the new big thing. Ferger also brings a one-of-a-kind touch to each home he tricks out. “I was a DJ for a long time so I’ve always been a music lover, and, at first, this business was very music-forward. That’s what really led me to it.” After taking the helm of CCS’s Home Division two years ago, his success has been unprecedented, something he credits largely to his team of eight, noting that they are “like a dream team of AV experts.” Most recently, Ferger has been working on homes at The Village at Mountain Shadows, bringing a little bit of his past to the present. “My mom married my stepdad at the original Mountain Shadows resort when I was five. It was an iconic property back then, so we always wondered what would become of it,” he says. “I think this is exactly what Paradise Valley wanted, and I am so glad to be a part of it.”

Any major trends you’re seeing right now? Voice control is the latest buzzword in our industry, and it’s something I like to teach people about because it’s not always what it seems to be. What’s one of your favorite features? Probably the one thing I never would have thought about doing in my home and now feel that everyone should do in their home is the lighting. I always tell my guys – and it’s one of my favorite sayings – that “no amount of money can compare to a job well done,” and that’s the satisfaction you get on both ends.

tour de force in the design industry, Neyda Melina has taken the local fashion scene by storm. As an assistant shoe buyer for Dillard’s corporate and creator of the style blog Truly, Ney (www.trulyney. com), Melina strives to show others that there is much more to fashion than what initially meets the eye. “I want to educate people on some of the stuff that isn’t so obvious with fashion,” she says. “To me, fashion is culture. There is a story behind each garment, because everything from the colors to the fabrics to what’s currently going on in the market has an influence on fashion.” Although she prefers a polished, feminine look – you can typically find her in a pair of wide-leg trousers paired with a basic, versatile blouse and comfortable block heels on weekdays – the self-proclaimed accessories queen always likes to add a pop of color to her ensemble with a scarf and earrings. “I always carry summer scarfs that I can just throw on at any time. I have hundreds in all different colors, patterns and fabrics.” However, Melina also isn’t afraid to push style boundaries. “I find a lot of inspiration in menswear, too, because it breaks the look a little and makes it more interesting,” she says. “True style is really all about owning it, no matter the look.” What are some of your favorite fashion items? I have to mention shoes because I really am a shoe girl. I can’t say how many I have, but I can say one of my go-to classics is a leopard print stiletto. What is your best piece of style advice? I always say wear even the tiniest of earrings because they are like the last topping to every outfit, and then whatever feels comfortable to you and your personality. Any standout summer trends? Anything that’s woven. Woven leather is really trending, and it’s going to be really big for shoes.

P a s s i o n a m b i t i o That was the one question that seemed to stump hometown musician Ryan Sims. The question asked Sims which trait is most important for a musician to have in order to make it to the big time – because so few do and so many dream of that rise to fame. You may recognize Sims for his gigs at Harold’s Corral, Wasted Grain and Copper Blues. But long before those, Sims, like many musicians, has been navigating the tough industry that is a career in music. The hours are late, the pay is low, and the hard work is often thankless. Musicians must battle the vices that seem to come with late nights in bars and sacrifice the most basic of comforts when they tour on the road. The evenings are filled with heart-pounding live sets, and nights are spent dreaming of that one moment when the right label makes the perfect offer. That journey is one Sims has been on for some time, and it seems like he may be nearing his destination. SO SCOTTSDALE! |

In April, Sims made an announcement that left his fans eagerly anticipating October. On Facebook, he posted a poignant letter thanking his supporters for their encouragement during his early days in the band EastonAshe and, most recently, with the Ryan Sims Band. He noted that the band would be on temporary hiatus, but there were plans to regroup in October, with exciting news. “I couldn’t be prouder of what the Ryan Sims Band has accomplished,” Sims says. “But this was a dream come true.” At the start of 2017, Sims was approached by Chart Attack/Universal Music Group to record what would be his second record deal. It was an exciting opportunity for the Cave Creek-based singer who had just recently rebounded from a tough year of personal challenges. Even more exciting was the new league of talent this deal would put in place to support Sims’ portfolio of incredible soundtracks. Darryl Jones of the Rolling Stones was being approached to lay the bass track on the record, and Kenny Aronoff (the former drummer for John Mellencamp) was being scouted to lay the rhythm. Even more incredible, Canadian-born Justin Gray, who has collaborated with Mariah Carey, John Legend, Amy Winehouse, David Bisbal and James Bay, would produce the soundtrack. With this announcement, Sims packed up his guitar and set course for Los Angeles, where he has spent the summer recording. Sims admits he finally feels like this may be his year. He’s ready for this album and ready for the next evolution of his career. Sims’ forthcoming album, which is set to debut in October, is heavily influenced by his rock ‘n’ roll roots, but with the unique lyrical emotion of his previous country soundtrack. The singer-songwriter has long had a reputation for his unique blend of styles and genres, as well as for his captivating on-stage presence. With a voice that’s powerful yet emotional, Sims is excited to prove he is at the top of his game.

A Musical Journey At an early age, Sims was influenced by a vast array of musical legends, from punk rock group Offspring to folk singersongwriter James Taylor. Music spoke

to him and he soon found a passion for performing. A self-taught guitarist, he began composing his own songs while at Cactus Shadows High School in Cave Creek. It was upon graduation that he started pursuing his future in music. In 2007, he founded Phoenix-based band EastonAshe and began touring nationally. “EastonAshe really solidified my love for live music,” Sims says. “Every single show, we walked on stage and gave all of ourselves. We delivered energy and commanded attention. Every time we played, it was about honoring the cover song and listener. It was about making a deep connection and having people walk away with a truly exciting experience.” EastonAshe quickly gained national recognition. Famous for their blend of original songs and cover music, they sold more than 10,000 copies of their debut album Can I Drive It. A year later, they won Independent Rock Album of the Year and back-to-back Performer of the Year at the LA Music/Hollywood F.A.M.E. Awards. Back home, Phoenix was not about to ignore its own local talent, and, in 2009, Sims received Singer/Songwriter of the Year at the Phoenix Music Awards. His star seemed to be on the rise, when Poison frontman Bret Michaels phoned about a chance to appear on The X Factor. Sims vied at the chance to become a household name and made it all the way to the final 32 contestants. Sims’ time on The X Factor landed him his next opportunity at The Song Factory in Nashville. The independent music publishing company – which has published the catalogs of numerous musicians including Lady Antebellum, Trisha Yearwood and Jon Pardi – recognized Sims’ musical talent but even more so, appreciated his tremendous songwriting abilities. He took a position as a writer, an opportunity to showcase his ability to bring songs to life while connecting with some of the best cowriters and artists in the industry. It was at this time he made the shift from rock ‘n’ roll to country. “Transitioning to country music was a natural thing for me. Country music as a genre had been changing for a while; the narratives were becoming more meaningful and you started seeing more crossover in the composition,” Sims says. “There was now a natural fluidity and complexity AUGUST 2017 |

that fit my style.” This new sound landed Sims his first record deal with Nashville’s iconic House of Blues. There, he worked with some of the best in the industry, including the producer that launched the careers of Matchbox 20 and Collective Soul. A blend of rock-infused country, Sims wrote all but one of the songs on his self-titled debut album, and played alongside lead guitarist Jay Poole, bassist Ethan Newman and drummer Perry Sean. It was to be one of the best and hardest times of his life. “I was facing a lot of personal demons, health issues and private heartbreak during those years,” Sims says. “My girlfriend had left me, and I had a serious surgery that left me in incredible pain and with an intense craving for painkillers. It was such a tough time. I tried not to let my mindset impact the music, but as a musician, those lines often get blurred. Sometimes I look back at those songs and I relive those experiences all over again.” Sims took some physical and emotional recovery time to dive deeper into his songwriting than ever before. He wrote about pain, joy, realizations, heartbreak and the past. And for the first time in a long time, he started looking toward the future. Past the rough times of earlier years and in the studio making music again, Sims has truly experienced the ups and downs of his profession, the heart wrenching feeling of personal defeat, and the rollercoaster of being on the verge of success. He has battled and defeated a tough addiction, healed after heartbreak, and now uses that pain to inspire audiences through his music. Through it all, he has stayed humble and passionate about his music and ambitious about his goals. So, in regards to passion or ambition, Sims says, “I think you need both to survive this crazy industry. You need to balance them to get the best out of your career, and I think that neither guarantees that you get to the top. There are so many amazing musicians out there who never get the chances that I’ve gotten, and for those moments, I’m thankful. I really can’t wait to see what the rest of 2017 will bring.” Sims’ album release party is scheduled for Oct. 14 at Harold’s Corral. Several chefs will also take part in a friendly competition throughout the day akin to Iron Chef, where they will be tasked with preparing a dish using a mystery ingredient in front of a live audience. “We will also be handing over the stage to several famed local chefs and beverage partners – one every half hour, in fact – to allow them to give interactive cooking demonstrations, cocktail pairing advice, and even pull guests on stage to cook with them throughout the day,” Manders says. Chiricahua National Monument Approximately four hours southwest of the Valley near Willcox, Chiricahua National Monument (www.nps.gov/chir), often called the “Wonderland of Rocks,” is a fee-free park that is open year-round and the result of a volcanic eruption nearly 30 million years ago. The monument is teeming with wildlife, trees and mind-bending rock formations, including giant rocks balancing on top of each other as if by magic. There is no shortage of hiking options, including both day hikes and longer options, as well as picnic areas, historic tours, wildlife viewing areas, formal birding programs, stargazing, camping, and even horseback riding. Horseshoe Bend Located north of the Grand Canyon, just outside of Page and approximately four hours from the Valley, Horseshoe Bend (www.horseshoebend.com) lies on the Colorado River in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and is named for its distinct curvature, which is quite literally in the shape of an almostperfect horseshoe. Surprisingly, hiking to see the formation is a relatively easy 30- to 45minute walk up a sandy and moderate incline. The hike requires no permits, has nearby parking and is accessible year-round. There are several outfitters and tour companies that offer transportation to the overlook, including Colorado River Discovery in Page. Montezuma Castle If you’ve ever made the drive on Interstate Highway 17 toward Sedona or Flagstaff, you’ve no doubt seen the signs for Montezuma Castle (www.nps.gov/moca) near Camp Verde, about 90 minutes north of the Valley. While not a formal castle one might see in the likes of Great Britain, these dwellings of the Sinagua people – preserved in a limestone cliff – date back to A.D. 700 and are believed to have been built over the course of 300 years. Beyond the National Monument, the area has hiking as well as prime spots for a picnic. Entrance is $10 per person, but ages 15 and under are admitted for free. Be sure to check out the junior ranger programs available for free – and open to all ages – on site. Walnut Canyon In the pine forests near Flagstaff, the steep Walnut Canyon (www.nps.gov/waca) National Monument severs a rolling plateau. Twenty miles long, 400 feet deep and a quarter-mile wide, the canyon was carved by Walnut Creek over a period of 60 million years. There are two main hiking trails along the canyon. The strenuous Island Trail is about 1 mile and offers spectacular canyon scenery and wildlife as well as the chance to see 25 cliff dwellings, while the Rim Trail is an easy three-quarter-mile walk along the canyon rim through a ponderosa forest with two canyon overlooks. There is an entrance fee of $8 per person, but ages 15 and under are admitted for free.

Beth Ames Swartz channels healing and spirituality through mixed media BY OFELIA MONTELONGO

T

o understand Beth Ames Swartz’s visual and mixed media art is to comprehend the complexity of human spirituality and transcendentalism. In 1959, Swartz left her native New York City for the desert landscape of Paradise Valley, where she currently resides. Even though she’s been painting since she was five, a trip to the Colorado River was the cause of her breakthrough as an artist, a place where she bonded with the earth. “There is no separation between the earth and yourself,” she says. Since then, the 81-year-old painter began meditating and studying different philosophical systems, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism, the I-Ching, Jewish mysticism and Native American healing practices. During an expedition to Israel in the 1970s, inspired by pain and fear of her own mortality, Swartz experimented with fire, incorporating dirt, candle wax, paper and water into her paintings. Through these experimentations and mutilating watercolor paper with a screwdriver, Swartz found her voice. Today, Swartz’s artistic process branches from the desire to understand how knowledge, philosophical concepts, healing and spirituality contribute to societal development. “As I discovered or experienced a wisdom system, I would study it and then try to express it aesthetically,” she says. Her work is presented in various series, each of them based on a philosophical system that is translated into aesthetic

visual experiences. The series are consistent in form but with a different look. A series – which ranges from 30 to 40 pieces – usually takes her about five to 10 years to make, taking the first year to study the wisdom system and the aesthetic language she will later develop into her exquisite multi-shaped paintings. “My projects are like puzzles,” she says. “Each time I start a new series is like jumping off a bridge and learning to fly on the way down.” Often, her multi-layered pieces honor differences among cultures through symbolism and embedded language, reflecting on the endless cycle of life, death and rebirth as well as order, disorder and reordering. The award-winning artist continuously paints to understand life and how the universe works, no longer doing it for her own personal growth. Swartz’s desire is for a painting to contribute to the world and to express that humanity shares the commonalities of compassion and kindness, regardless of what we believe. Although her diverse series explores different areas of knowledge or wisdom, there is consistency in what the works are trying to say: “The essence is to celebrate the sacredness of life,” she says. Swartz is represented by ACA Galleries in New York City and has had more than 70 one-person art exhibitions all over the world. Her artwork has also been published in three different books. t Market Street Kitchen, there are two rules to creating a successful cocktail. “Ideally, we want to educate our guests about a spirit or wine they might not have tried before,” says Garrit Guthrie, beverage director for Keeler Hospitality Group, Market Street Kitchen’s parent company. “But to get people to try it, we play with flavors that are approachable.” Like Strawberry Wine ($11), which is new to the menu, succeeds on all levels. “In this case, the educational element is vermouth, or fortified wine, which most people only know as an almost throwaway ingredient in martinis,” Guthrie says. The vermouth is combined in a shaker with strawberry gin, which adds a complex fruit flavor. To make this element, Guthrie infuses Fords Gin with strawberries using an immersion circulator, which helps the strawberries break down faster. “Once we have the base, we add housemade rhubarb balsamic syrup that gives a bright tartness meant to ramp up the deep berry flavors,” Guthrie says. “The vibrant pink of the syrup also gives the cocktail its signature look.” A hint of lemon is then added for acidity, and the ingredients are muddled with fresh strawberries, then shaken and strained into a wine glass with ice and topped with Topo Chico Mineral Water, giving the drink a refreshing effervescence. A basil leaf serves as the garnish. “The result is a jammy, bubbly, slightly fruity sipper tailor-made for the summer.” Market Street Kitchen, 20825 N. A

nyone who has grown up near the water knows a boat’s gentle rock is one of the most peaceful, almost spiritual, experiences. It may seem hard to encounter this among the desert landscape, but Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas in Arizona and Utah are stepping up to offer just that in their newest fleet of six houseboats, dubbed the Wanderer. So, whether you’re planning a getaway with friends or a family excursion, you’ll be spared no amenity on this fleet that was built exclusively for Lake Powell. Houseboats are nothing new to Lake Powell, the second largest man-made lake in the U.S., known for its sandy beaches, pristine water and breathtaking red rock sandstone cliffs. But the Wanderer fleet, which launched in June, is in a class of its own. he all-new 2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country is proving to be one of the best luxury wagons. But is it good enough to persuade SUV and crossover-crazed car shoppers to forego high-end utes? You do remember station wagons, don’t you? Although both demand and product availability in the market have shrunk dramatically, few automakers have remained as dedicated to it as Volvo, having sold millions worldwide. While certainly no SUV, the 2018 V90 Cross Country is a large vehicle, measuring within a fraction of an inch of the XC90, Volvo’s largest SUV. It sits SO SCOTTSDALE! |

almost 9 inches lower, however, making it easier to load bikes, kayaks and skis onto the vehicle’s roof rails. Big, elegant and beautifully crafted, the V90 rides on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, giving it an excellent ride and a roomy interior. It seems like the perfect automobile: large doors, comfortable seating for five, and 53.9 cubic feet of cargo space with 60/40 split-folded rear seats. Volvo really brought its “A” game with its recent design language, and the beautifully styled V90 is no exception. In particular, I like the concave grille inspired by the classic Volvo P1800 coupe, its hammer light design, long hood, and steeply raked windshield. The aerodynamic coherence of the sweeping arched roofline flowing to the raked rear hatch is automotive design at its finest. Slip behind the wheel, and you’re immediately immersed in Scandinavian luxury – elegant, hand-stitched Nappa leather wraps the steering wheel, instrument panel, door trim and seating. There’s even a tiny Swedish flag sewn into the front passenger seat as a reminder of its origin. Most vehicle controls are operated via the 12.3-inch tablet-like, portraitoriented Sensus Connect touchscreen that’s attractive, bright, crystal clear and fast-acting, allowing you to swipe right and left for various operating controls. Volvo’s hallmark is its reputation for safety. The V90 carries on that tradition with a full suite of safety systems, including standard City Safety forward-collision avoidance system, and the world’s first automatic braking should the driver turn in front of an oncoming vehicle. The wagon is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo/supercharged four-cylinder with 316 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Performance is brisk, taking about six seconds to accelerate to 60 mph. If, by chance, I have tempted you to test drive the V90 Cross Country, you’ll be treated to a fantastic vehicle that’s drop-dead gorgeous, incredibly practical, and will have you riding first class every time you slip behind the wheel. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t be surprised if Americans stick with their SUVs.

hicago might be known as the “Windy City” with long, cold winters, but its summers are delightful, with pleasant weather (maximum temperatures are in the 80s) and festivals and fun aplenty. Situated on the shore of Lake Michigan, Chicago is no ordinary concrete jungle, with a whopping 552 parks and 33 beaches. It is also filled with classic architecture and luxury hotels and is home to 26 Michelin-starred restaurants. That being said, it’s an ideal escape from the Arizona heat.

Art and Architecture Chicago grew in popularity during the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 – which celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World in 1492 – when an estimated 150,000 people visited the city every single day for six months. Upon arrival, they discovered a city filled with grand buildings. Experience some of this grandeur yourself by booking an architectural tour. One of the most

popular tours is a 90-minute river cruise with Chicago’s First Lady Cruises. You can also take a walking tour to get inside of some of these architectural gems. For example, the Historic Treasures of Culture and Commerce tour, available through the Chicago Architecture Foundation, goes inside the famous 19th-century Palmer House, and you can stand under the breathtaking dome of the original Chicago Public Library. Of course, no visit to Chicago is complete without checking out The Art Institute of Chicago. The second largest art museum in the country, it houses one of the best collections of impressionist paintings, including works by Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir. If you’re looking for a bit of a thrill, check out the venue’s latest attraction, TILT. Billed as Chicago’s highest thrill ride (and the first of its kind worldwide), you step into a glass cube and tilt out over the city above The Magnificent Mile and the Chicago skyline.

Two concepts – Spiaggia and Café Spiaggia – are housed in the same location but offer two different dining experiences. The more casual Café Spiaggia is open for lunch and dinner, serving up handmade pastas, shared plates, pastries and coffee. The cafe is a display of Italian home cooking, especially with its Sunday supper menu and family-style dining options. For a more upscale dining experience, book a table at Spiaggia, which has garnered a Michelin star and is a recipient of numerous awards. In fact, it’s consistently named one of “America’s 100 Best Wine Restaurants” by Wine Enthusiast magazine, giving a nod to its 700-bottle wine list. If you’re in Chicago on a Sunday morning, head across the bridge to River Roast, where Executive Chef John Hogan puts on Blues & Brunch, pairing creative morning-time indulgences with some of Chicago’s finest blues musicians performing live. Be sure to try the rabbit and waffles or mascarpone French toast. Undoubtedly, sipping a bloody mary and listening to the blues is an ideal way to end a Chicago sojourn.

T

he Vig has finally arrived in North Scottsdale. Since it launched its first location in Arcadia in 2006, The Vig and its modern tavern-meets-backyard barbecue vibe has been a hit with the community and media alike, praised for its perfect patios, eclectic menu, creative cocktails and thoughtful touches such as bocce ball courts and live music. Over the past decade, the brand, which is owned by longtime friends Tucker Woodbury and Jim Riley, has since

grown across the Valley with locations in Central Phoenix, Downtown Phoenix and McCormick Ranch. “North Scottsdale has always been on our radar, but the circumstances had to be just right, not to mention the location,” says Woodbury, who scooped up an open space on the southwest corner of Bell Road and Thompson Peak Parkway with nearly 360-degree views of the McDowell Mountains late last year. wings creatively during the design phase, partnering with YAM Properties, AV3 Design, Alexander Building Company, K&I Architects and the City of Scottsdale on a 13,000-square-foot open floor plan heavily inspired by the timeless design of Frank Lloyd Wright while incorporating the beautiful natural surroundings into the restaurant’s setting. “Jim and I both love the simplicity of the iconic structure of Wright’s Taliesin West and the Usonian style of architecture it represents, which was the inspiration for the design of this restaurant,” says Woodbury, noting that they also outfitted the venue with sets of lockers and an outdoor restroom given its less than a mile from the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Gateway Trailhead, known for its immaculate hiking and biking trails. “The setup makes it easy for guests to clean up after their outdoor activities before lounging on the patio for leisurely meals with friends and family.” Speaking of meals, all of The Vig’s fan-favorite items are available on the McDowell Mountain location’s menu, including The Vig burger, pozole, short rib tacos, and sweet potato fries with curry sauce. New items include a pork belly and watermelon appetizer and a poke bowl. This venue will also feature a cocktail called The Bitty, which is a play on a rum and Coke in homage to the Bitty Cycling Club in the area. Fifty cents from the sale of each of these cocktails will be donated to the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, which keeps the McDowell Mountain trails maintained and safe for patrons. On weekdays, enjoy happy hour from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with food specials from 3 to 6 p.m. A two-day weekend brunch includes bloody mary and mimosa specials from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., plus halfprice bottles of wine all day on Sunday.
