How can National Breast Cancer Awareness Month make a difference? We can use this opportunity to spread the word about steps everyone can take to detect breast cancer early. PLEASE THANK THESE LOCAL SPONSORS FOR MAKING THIS MESSAGE POSSIBLE
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women, second only to lung cancer. One in eight women is expected to develop breast cancer in her lifetime, and a recent survey by the Society for Women’s Health Research found that 22 percent of women named breast cancer as the disease they fear most. The specter of breast cancer makes it no surprise that women are eager to seek various ways to reduce their risks of developing this potentially deadly disease. Though cancer treatments continue to evolve, there remains no cure for breast cancer or any other types of cancer. However, there are steps men and women can take to reduce their risks of developing breast cancer. In fact, the National Cancer Institute says avoiding breast cancer risk factors is the best path to prevention. • Avoid exposure to radiation. Repeated exposure to radiation therapy used to treat illnesses like Hodgkin’s disease can increase a person’s risk of breast cancer, particularly if treatments begin at an early age. • Keep a healthy weight. Obesity increases the risk of breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women. • Get your exercise. Exercising four or more hours a week can lower breast cancer risk. • Eat a low-fat diet. The Women’s Intervention Nutrition Study from the National Cancer Institute found that the highest rate of breast cancer reduction was among a group of women who ate a low-fat diet. • Reduce alcohol consumption. Various studies have indicated that women who drink alcoholic beverages may develop cancer at a higher rate. Women who consume two to five drinks daily have a greater risk of developing breast cancer than those who abstain from alcohol. • Weigh the risks of hormone replacement therapy. There are mixed reviews on hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, for postmenopausal women. • Use of SERMs and aromatase inhibitors. Selective estrogen receptor modulators, or SERMs, are drugs that act like estrogen on some bodily tissues but block the effect of estrogen on other tissues. Aromatase inhibitors decrease the amount of estrogen made by the body. Women with a high risk of breast cancer may benefit from taking a SERM or aromatase inhibitor. • Increase fruit and vegetable consumption. Carotenoids are cancer-protective pigments found in a vast number of fruits and vegetables. • Go sparingly on antibiotics. Only take antibiotics when they are truly needed. • Breastfeed your children. Lactation can suppress ovulation and the body’s production of estrogen, which has been linked to higher levels of breast cancer. Breastfeeding may drop a woman’s breast cancer risk by 4 percent. Although there is no cure for cancer, there are a number of different ways women can reduce their risks for breast cancer.
While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in early stages and encourage others to do the same! Help save lives by spreading the word!

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH – BREAST CANCER 101
Q: How does breast cancer develop? A: Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast become abnormal and start dividing rapidly. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), most breast cancers start with cells in the milk ducts, the tiny tubes that run from the lobules (glands that make breast milk) to the nipple. Without effective treatment, these cancer cells continue to multiply, invading and destroying healthy breast tissue and eventually forming a tumor. Cancer cells can also break away from the tumor, travel to other organs and start new tumors. Q: What are the risk factors for breast cancer? According to the ACS, risk factors for breast cancer include: Older age. Most invasive breast cancers are found in women age 55 or older. Family history. Women whose mother, sister or daughter had breast cancer are at higher risk themselves. Genetics. Women who have mutated forms of some genes have a higher risk for breast cancer. History of breast cancer. Women who have had cancer in one breast are more likely to develop cancer in the other breast. Race. Caucasian women are more likely than women of other races to develop breast cancer. Past radiation treat-
ment. Women who have had radiation therapy to the chest are at higher risk for breast cancer. Age of first and last period. Women who started menstruating before age 12, or stopped menstruating after age 55, are at higher risk for breast cancer. Past pregnancies. In general, women who have no biological children or did not bear children until after age 30 have a higher risk for breast cancer. DES (diethylstilbestrol). Women who were given this drug during pregnancy have a higher risk for breast cancer. Medicines with hormones. Birth control pills and hormone therapy after menopause have both been linked to increased breast cancer risk. Obesity and being overweight. Women who are overweight or obese after menopause are more likely to develop breast cancer than those who maintain a healthy weight. An inactive lifestyle. Women who get regular exercise are less likely to develop breast cancer. Alcohol. As little as one alcoholic drink a day can raise a woman’s breast cancer risk. Q: How is breast cancer found? Breast cancer may be found during a screening test such as a mammogram, an MRI or a breast exam or when a woman notices a lump, tender spot or other breast
change either by accident or during a breast self-exam. If your doctor thinks there’s any chance that it’s cancer, he or she will order additional tests. These may include specialized imaging tests and a biopsy. A biopsy is the only way to confirm that cancer is present, according to the ACS. It involves removing a sample of tissue and inspecting it under a microscope to look for signs of cancer. Q: How can I protect myself from breast cancer? You can reduce your risk of developing breast cancer by not drinking alcohol, getting regular exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight, according to the ACS. Also talk to your doctor about the screening schedule that’s right for you, so if cancer does develop you’re more likely to detect it very early. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer, you may want to talk to your doctor about other options for breast cancer prevention. Medicines or (in rare cases) surgery may be used to reduce risk in very high-risk wom-
en, notes the ACS. The most advanced mammography technology is available at Crossing Rivers Health - 3D™ Tomosynthesis Mammography provides a number of benefits, including: 41% increase in the detection of invasive breast cancers, compared to 2D. More comfortable experience, lighter compression and ergonomic design. Significant reduction in false- positive recall rates by up to 40%. A superior mammogram for all breast types. Very low x-ray energy; well within FDA safety standards for mammography. 3D™offers 120 images of each breast, rather than the standard two images. Patients who need routine screening exams may schedule their own appointment at their convenience. Crossing Rivers Health accepts most major insurance plans.
