Elizabeth L. “Betty” McMullen Elizabeth L. “Betty” McMullen, age 89, of the Boaz area, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2021, at home while surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Christmas day, 1931 in Chicago, IL to Walter and Mary (Pavlik) Zeglen in Chicago, Illinois. She always felt wonderful to be born on that Christmas day. She went to St. Raphael Grammar school and St. Augustine’s High School. After graduation, she became a switchboard operator for Armour & Co. It was a wonderful job. In April 1950, she bumped into Charles McMullen, who lived 5 doors down, at the A& P. The world stood still. They had a very romantic courtship. Charles was drafted into the Army in June 1951. They were married on November 10, 1951, at Fort Sill, OK, at the Post Chapel on a 3-day pass. In January, he went to Korea and came home 18 months later. She then worked for Consumer Company and later, Draper & Kramer in Chicago. They were blessed with three childrenMaureen, Kathleen, and Charly. In 1969, they moved from Chicago to Five Points and became dairy farmers for 25 years. It was a challenge, but they did it. In 1990, Betty and her friend Mary Farley, went to work at Land’s End to gift wrap. They had a wonderful time. In 2000, Chuck and Betty worked for Meridian in maintenance. They moved to Richland Center in 2006. After Chuck’s passing, family helped move Betty back to the family farm in 2021. Betty did all kinds of crafts. She made a nativity set for St. Phillips Church for 12 years, to be raffled off. In 1994, she went to quilting retreat and became addicted to quilting. She had 4 quilts at the quilting expo in Madison. Most importantly, through her years of quilting, she met so many wonderful and talented women. She gained lifelong friendships she treasured so much. They had so many good times going to retreats and quilt meetings. Most of all, her children, whom she loved more than she could express. They were the joys of her life. The grands, great grands, and great-great are all extra blessings. She is survived by her 3 children Maureen (Norm) Davis of Viroqua, Kathy Maly of Soldiers Grove, Charly (Latisha) McMullen of Tomah; 10 grandchildren Jessica (Jim) Bellomo, Beth Davis, Amber (Scott) Berhorst, Emily Davis, Dawn (Jim) Berghorn, Sean (Shawna) Maly, Michael (Elizabeth) McMullen, Matthew McMullen, Taylor (Naomi) McMullen, Brooke McMullen; 14 great grandchildren – Cole, Kate and Quinn, Wyatt and Parker, Madalyn (Andrew), Kolton, Mason, Bryhnley and Dawson, Shay, Sage, Sylvan, and Stroud; one great-great grandson- Waylon; her sister, Carol Ratke of IL; many nieces, nephews, and special friends, including Jean Mezera, Carol LeMoine, Pam Rick, and all the quilting ladies. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter & Mary (Pavlik) Zeglen; her in-laws, Charles and Emma (Flood) McMullen; husband, lover, and friend of 68 years, Charles J. McMullen; her sister, Helen Urbina Zeglen of Mexico and other relatives and friends from near and far. Special thanks to Agrace Hospice Care. The family of Larry E Wanless would like to express our gratitude for all the help and caring that we have received from friends and neighbors during these last few months. Thank you to everyone that called to express sympathy and came to the door to offer help, sent cards, brought food, and sent memorials and/ or flowers for Larry. Your thoughtfulness meant so much to us. Thank you to all the doctors and nurses at the Richland Hospital who were so kind every time we showed up at their door. Thank you to Paul and his staff at the pharmacy who took such good care of Larry. Your helpful hints were much appreciated. Thank you to the Kramer Center staff who were always looking out for Larry’s welfare. Thank you to Michele and Jane who were always ready to go that extra mile for his medical care. Thank you to all members of our family that answered those middle of the night calls and/or visited Larry often during those last few weeks. I know that he appreciated seeing each and every one of you and the help you provided. Thank you to the Agrace team here in Richland County and at the Agrace facility in Fitchburg. Your support and help was just what we needed at a crucial time. Thank you to Nick at Pratt’s for all your helpful suggestions. You were really great to work with. Thank you to Dave Fry for your help in finding and selecting the cemetery plot. Thank you to Craig Peach for the graveside service and the comforting words. Your helpfulness with the service was much appreciated. Thank you to Brandon and Nick for your thoughts remembering your grandfather. He would have gotten a chuckle out of the things that you remembered about him. Thank you to everyone who attended the graveside service on a beautiful September day. The support was great! A very extra special Thank You goes to our neighbor and good friends, Scott and Sally Gald. Larry always appreciated Sally’s rhubarb desserts that she baked and Scott kept our lawn well groomed all summer and fall. Larry really valued your friendship, Scott, and you were always available if I needed help of any kind. Thank you, Scott, for the times when my family was not available and you answered each and every call. Our family will never forget your kindness during those last few weeks of Larry’s life. As people around the world celebrate the birth of the Christ child, may God continue to bless you and yours as you give back to God based on the Holy Bible. Born in a humble manger in Bethlehem, Judea, Israel, about 2,025 years ago, Jesus Christ has been the most precious gift of all time. Despite all the natural disasters like tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes; all the medical pandemic problems with COVID-19 and variances around the world; people fleeing their countries due to high crime and drugs; and countries building up their military for possible warfare heading to Armageddon, it is wonderful to know God is still in charge. Celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ!
Peace Be With You At Christmas and always, may the spirit of God’s love fill you with joy and contentment. We hope your season is as special as you are, and we thank you for dropping in on us this year.
