OBITUARIES Sharon Miller, Rockbridge Town Clerk
JESSE (KAT) HALL March 31, 2020 Jesse(Kat) Hall, 40 of Madison died unexpectedly on March 31 after a long illness. Jesse was born on December 16, 1979, the son of David and Maureen (Derrickson) Hall of Avoca. He showed a strong interest in music and science at an early age and talked before he learned to walk. He insisted that music should be played loud and he love to bang on pans and mom’s piano as hard as he could. His mom also let him make huge messes in the name of science. According to his kindergarten teacher, Jesse “marched to a different drum.” Being “different” didn’t work out well in public school. He was relentlessly bullied throughout his school years. This broke his spirit and his heart. Jesse loved animals and the outdoors. He loved spending time at Grandpa and Grandma Derrickson’s farm hunting morels and hiking up to the “sugar camp” . Grandma took him to Maple Ridge Bible Church with her for many years. As a teenager, Jesse played first chair saxophone in band. He loved to draw, write songs, skateboard, and canoe and camp on the Wisconsin River. After high school, Jesse worked at various jobs including building silos, factory work, and becoming a licensed cheese maker. He loved helping to set up and ignite town fire work shows. He love playing many different musical instruments with the guitar being his favorite. He played in several bands and set up shows from the age of eighteen on, despite having no real training. He formed his own punk-rock band in his early twenties call “2 Left
Shoes”. His band played many shows throughout the years with Jesse as lead guitar and vocal. When Jesse was 22, a furnace blew up in the house he was renting with a friend. Jesse barely escaped the inferno that engulfed the house. He could not reach his friend who perished. Jesse lost his friend and everything he owned. This grieved him until the day he died. In an art class Jesse took just a few months before his death. He painted a picture of the fire and titled it “Grief”. He continued working and was married for several years but later divorced. In his thirties, he began having a lot of pain. He was diagnosed with severe fibromyalgia and also suffered from a work related hip injury. Unable to work, he moved into his Mom’s house in Richland Center . His dream was to go back to school and get a degree in a music field. However he had no money, no car and no housing in Madison. He enrolled anyway and took out a lot of student loans. He started the school year taking a shuttle bus to Madison and back to Richland Center every day. He did this for many months until he got a cheap car which he slept in every night at a Madison Walmart and went to school during the day. He did this all winter and nearly froze to death. Despite these hardships, Jesse became president of the Student Council and kept a 4.0 GPA. He loved school because in his words, “I can learn without being bullied for once in my life”. He invited his Mom to spend a day with him at Madison Media Institute and attend all his classes with him. She accepted. When the day came, Jesse introduced her to all of his professors and told them how much she had supported and encouraged him. She didn’t understand one single thing that was taught in the classes that day, but she pretended she did. And she felt so loved by her son. Jesse went on to earn a degree in Recording and Music Technology, a second degree in Entertainment and Media Business Management, and a Bachelor’s Degree in 2016. Shortly before graduation, Jesse became very ill with an infection that began in his hand. He had surgery at U.W. Hospital and recovery was slow. On graduation day he was still sick but he wobbled up on stage to receive his diploma that
he worked so hard for. His Mom was his “cheering section” and she was LOUD. After graduation, Jesse went back to the school often to help plan events, use equipment for his projects and work at the front desk. He began working as a freelance audio engineer under the business name “Mad Kat Media” and expanded into video as well. He also did audio restoration work at “Dave’s Lucky Laquer Studio” in Madison. He assisted on the restoration of the masters for D.R.I.’s “Live at CBGB’s.. Jesse still had his own band and played with other bands as well. He recorded his own songs and music on DCs’ and vinyls. He spent time working at a Madison Radio Station and heard his own music play on air. He was involved in many other projects until his health started to decline. He was in a lot of pain and could no longer work full time. Instead, Jesse became devoted to full time Bible Study and his Christian faith. It was all-consuming. He acquired a vast collection of Bibles, Theology books, and Software. He studied day and night and taught himself Hebrew. Jesse loved Physics and used that knowledge in his study of creation. He totally fell in love with God, Jesus and the Bible. He said God was the Father he yearned for that loved him unconditionally. Jesse carried a Bible with him everywhere he went so he would be ready to minister to others, especially the homeless and suffering (like himself). If he left home and forgot to take his Bible, he turned back to get it. He found a church he loved and joined Zion Community in Madison. They welcomed him with open arms and loved him dearly. Jesse was very active in the church. He played guitar with Pastor Pat for Sunday Worship. He loved weekly Bible Study and answering questions anyone would ask. His knowledge of the Bible was amazing. He loved all of the Bible and said it filled him with wonder and peace. He especially loved Genesis and Job. He would text or talk with his Mom almost every day. He always talked about something new he had discovered in a verse or passage of the Bible and was so excited to share it. In the fall of 2019, Jesse started having a lot of stomach pain. He went to several doctors and was told it was

probably a hernia or an ulcer. Just before Christmas, Jesse went to the emergency room and was put in the hospital. He was full of infection in his stomach and then it progressed to his right leg and foot. He was given strong antibiotic therapy for many weeks. By February, he seemed to be feeling better and had some energy back. In March he started having stomach pain again and his feet and legs were swelling to the point of him not being able to walk much. At this time he was living in a room at his church and spent his days studying the Bible. He didn’t want to go out during the pandemic and didn’t want to go back to the hospital. He felt very safe and at peace in “His Father’s House” and that is where he died. He is in heaven, his true home and he is in no more pain. He isn’t here anymore. His hugs, we can’t feel, his laugh we don’t hear. He isn’t here to answer our Bible questions or tell us he loves us. He isn’t playing his guitar and singing to us. His Mom has a huge ache in her heart that will never go away until she is with him again. She lost her son and her best friend. Jesse’s brother’s miss him so much and loved playing with him. Jesse(Kat) was preceded in death by his grandparents, Norman and Helen (Wade) Derrickson and Art and Eulalia (Fruit) Boak all from Blue River, two uncles, james Derrickson and Brian Boak from Blue River area. He is survived by his Father, David Hall, Monfort; his Mother, Maureen (Derrickson) Hall of Richland Center; two brothers, Adam Hall of Richland Center and Isaac Hall of Madison; a nephew, Remy Hall (Isaac) and a sister-in-law Maya Hall (Isaac) of Madison: and many friends and his church family at Zion Community Church. Jesse’s Pastor described him as a “man who would give you his last dollar and the shirt off his back. He loved to help others and he loved God.” A Memorial service will be held later this summer at Jesse’s Church in Madison. Phone number of church is 608-244-1588 for date. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, rural Blue river at a later time. Cards can be sent to Jesse’s Mom at 682 N Park in Richland Center. She has an autoimmune disease and is homebound during this pandemic. She misses her son so much and

Woodward Community Media
Community Advertising Grant Deadline to Apply is May 29th
DON’T WAIT - APPLY TODAY!
In early April, Woodward Community Media announced a Local Community Advertising Grant Program, committing up to $1,000,000 in matching advertising to assist locally owned businesses during this challenging business environment. We are proud to have awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in matching advertising to our business partners in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois -- we are truly invested in your success! We’d like to share with you that there is still a limited amount of matching advertising grant dollars available, but the deadline for grant applications is quickly approaching. Perhaps you have been on the fence as to whether or not to apply. Perhaps you wondered if your business qualifies for this program. Or maybe you already received a matching grant and find that you need some additional marketing for your business. Whatever the case, we invite you to apply today for an advertising matching grant from Woodward Community Media!
What you need to know:
• We will provide up to $1,000,000 of matching advertising dollars. Grant funds can be used toward print or website advertising in your local Woodward Community Media publication. • Dollar-for-dollar matching grants are available for a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $10,000 of matching funds each month. Program does not apply to previously scheduled ads. • Grants will be awarded for use through the end of June. Woodward Community Media advertising terms and conditions apply.
