RICHARD (DICK) DUANE DERRICKSON

October 8, 2020 Richard (Dick) Duane Derrickson, 77, passed away at home on October 8, 2020 with his wife at his side, after a summer of heart complications. Richard was born November 19, 1942 in Blue River, WI to Kenneth (Ken) Derrickson and Ruth (Couey) Derrickson. He graduated valedictorian from Blue River High School (1960), and got his degree at University

of Wisconsin Platteville (1966) taking some time to work in local mines. In 1961, while at Platteville, the University credited him with the discovery of a 2000yo state historical site, cementing his love of archeology. After college he headed north to Alaska, raising his family in the shadow of the Alaska Range, teaching in the winter, and gold prospecting in the summer. Richard spent much of his educator career teaching math and science and coaching basketball at Susitna Valley High School in Talkeetna, Alaska. He captained a local men’s softball team, pursued his love of rock collecting, hunting, and became an avid amateur mycologist. As much as he loved a quiet cup of coffee with a newspaper, he also was an adventurer and survivalist. He rafted white water in Alaska, was chased by grizzlies, built houses, held a mining claim in Denali National Park, and opened a rock/ mining gift shop in Talkeetna. His hand tied fishing flies were given as a gift to the Warren Buffet of Korea, and his rock collections have graced museums, libraries, schools, and collector shows. An intrepid wanderer, Richard would leave Alaska to pursue teaching opportunities in geologically intriguing areas

of Australia, Guam, Nevada, Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Dakota. During a trip home to Wisconsin for his mom’s 90th birthday, he became reacquainted and fell in love with Sharon (Shari) Tisdale. Fifty-six years after being in high school together, Richard and Shari got married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA (Dec. 2015), and together they fulfilled his lifelong dream of returning to his roots and retiring on the banks of his beloved Wisconsin River. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and Ruth Derrickson. He is survived by his wife Shari Eileen (Duhr) Derrickson; his children by his first wife: Rick Derrickson of Talkeetna, AK; Tonya Derrickson of Portland, OR; Teresa Derrickson of Anchorage, AK; Lisa Derrickson of Lome, Togo and David Derrickson of Portland, OR; his grandchildren Jonathan, Daniel, Scarlett; his brother Roger (Chris) Derrickson of Arcadia, and sister, Linda (Mark Kessenich) Derrickson of Blanchardville; Shari’s children: Shelley (Steve Anderson) Nicks of Richland Center, WI; Sondra (Patrick) Cunningham of Richland Center, WI; and Steve (Courtney) Tisdale of Boscobel, WI; and step grandchil-

dren Lucas Nicks; Lindsay (Brandon Hernan) Nicks; Brendan (Shelby) Tisdale; Connor Tisdale; and step great grandchild Cooper Tisdale; and many nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Following cremation, Richard will be buried in the Greenwood cemetery with a private family burial service. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements. prattfuneral service.com
