He was born on March 8, 1939 the son of Donald J. and Letha M. (Farrell) Stafford. Ray graduated from Richland Center High School in 1957 where he participated in boxing and the FFA. January 16, 2021 Mary Helen Prochaska, 95, of Muscoda died Saturday, January 16, 2021, at The Richland Hospital, in Richland Center, WI. Mary was born at the Castle Rock Cheese Factory, Grant County, WI, on June 25, 1925, the daughter of James and Gertrude (Gutweiler) Manning. James was a cheesemaker who owned Liberty-Clifton Cheese Factory for many years. Mary and her older brother, Jefferson, were proud have worked with their dad growing up and to be children of a cheesemaker. Mary was encouraged by her father to be a teacher and she graduated with an associate degree from Platteville State Teachers College (now UW Platteville, Platteville, WI). Mary taught children from 1st grade through high school as a teacher in “one-room” school house while living in Platteville. She began dating Laudie Prochaska after he returned from the Army in WWII and they married on
April 20, 1948. After they were married, Mary and Laudie lived at the Castle Rock Country Store, Tavern, Repair Shop and Dance Hall, Castle Rock, WI, with Laudie’s father, John, for a few years while Laudie worked with his dad and Mary continued teaching. In the late 1950’s, Laudie and Mary bought a dairy farm near Muscoda where they lived for 33 years raising six children. In the 1970’s, Mary began working again in the Riverdale School District, Muscoda, as a teacher’s aide to special needs children where she worked until retiring. Mary believed every child could learn and took joy in helping each child she worked with. In 1988, Mary and Laudie bought a home in Muscoda where they lived together until 2016. Mary and Laudie liked to keep busy in the community delivering meals to the elderly, volunteering at St Vinny’s, along with participating in St John’s Catholic Church. Laudie loved to play euchre and Mary always went along. Mary helped to organize the books and dolls at St Vinny’s for many years and Laudie was the sewing machine and general repair fixer of many things you didn’t think could be fixed. Mary was a selftaught skilled seamstress, crocheter and baker. Laudie was proud of her talents and always wanted to share Mary’s handiwork with others. Mary made the best bread, rolls, pies, cakes and “farmer” cookies. Her pies many times sold first at the bake sales. Laudie and Mary were married for 68 years before Laudie passed away on April 18, 2016. Mary recently resided at Pine Valley Assisted Living, Richland Center, WI. We appreciate all at Pine Valley who helped Mary in the transition from her home to living at Pine Valley. Mary is survived by her six children: James (Sharon) Prochaska of Green Bay, WI, David Prochaska of Muscoda, WI, Linda Prochaska of Appleton, WI, William Prochaska of Muscoda, WI, Philip (Linda Troxel) Prochaska of Richland Center, WI, and Karen (Jason Amidon) Prochaska of Barneveld, WI; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Laudie, her parents, daughter-in-law Paula, (David), daughterin-law Susan (William), and her brother and sister-inlaw, Jefferson and Janelle Manning. A private family mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with burial to follow in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. A public celebration of life will be scheduled for later in the year. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with their arrangements. prattfuneralservice.com “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your field, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.” Irish Blessing

(Metro Creative Services) Unforeseen situations can crop up at any time. Anyone who has had a roadside breakdown in their car understands this. A flat tire or an engine malfunction is something no driver wants to experience, but those with a well-stocked vehicle emergency kit and breakdown strategy can get through most situations rather easily. A 2017 survey from AAA found that 40 percent of drivers in the United States are not ready to handle a typical roadside emergency breakdown. The organization estimates it helps some seven million motorists get back on the road each sum-
mer. A well-equipped roadside emergency kit may help drivers get their vehicles back on the road on their own. • First aid kit: The first aid kit will celebrate its 133rd birthday in 2021. The Johnson & Johnson company began commercializing first aid kits in 1888. Having a first aid kit in the car to treat minor injuries can be helpful in the event of an accident or even after injuring oneself during a breakdown. • Fire extinguisher: Cars are full of various mechanical parts and are susceptible to catching on fire. says vehicle fire extinguishers need to be rated for Class B and C fires. • Jumper cables: A weak or dead battery is often the culprit in breakdowns. Jumper cables enable drivers to get a charge from another motorist, and may help get a person back on the road quickly. If possible, get a set of cables that also comes with safety gloves and heavy duty clamps, offers Defensive Driving Online, a defensive driving course. • Mobile phone/charger: A mobile phone is essential for calling for assistance, but the phone is only useful if it’s charged.
