We can’t thank those that helped, prayed, and supported us over the last year enough. The meals, gift cards, and donations helped us to be able to care for our family. The fundraisers also helped with gas back and forth to appointments. Thank you to the staff with Montfort EMS & Cobb First Responders, Upland Hills ER, UW Med Flight and UW American Family Children’s Hospital for the care they gave Tanner. Thank you again, for the love, support and care you gave to Tanner and all of us following his accident on April 12, 2018.

Thank You The family of EUGENE KOWALSKI wishes to extend our sincere thank you to everyone for their cards, flowers, food, donations, help, support and acts of kindness shown during the recent loss of our father. Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the staff of Casey Funeral Home, Cuba City Greenhouse, Father David Flanagan, Sister Marian DeGrood, the funeral mass musicians and servers, and the Council of Catholic Women for the wonderful luncheon. We also wish to express our deep appreciation to Dad's caregivers. The compassion, support and uplifting words to Dad over the years were greatly appreciated and valued. We especially want to thank Epione Pavilion, Park Place Senior Living, Cuba City Rescue Squad and Southwest Health Center. Although it is impossible to thank everyone individually, please know nothing went unnoticed. Your expressions of sympathy and support will remain in our hearts forever. Will the Internet kill your free community paper? Did instant coffee kill coffee? New technologies change many things. But not everything. You may tweet, blog, surf, shop, or search online but you continue to read your free community paper. You just proved it. Readership of free community papers is now higher than paid daily papers, and continues to grow. Rather than being replaced by “instant” media, your local free community paper has become an important part of our neighborhood. The reason, which sometimes is not heard because of all the noise about the Internet, is pretty obvious: your free community paper does what the Internet doesn’t. We promote connections at a local level. Free papers join readers and advertisers in ways digital media doesn’t. In fact, the local content and power of your free paper makes advertising even more effective. We are the number one medium for driving purchases. That’s important in every product category. Exercise and aging: How to work out safely after 50 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, finding time to work out is not so easy.

every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.  Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path.

Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury.  Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and

 Stay hydrated. The NIA notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of injury during exercise.

In the United States alone, roughly 200,000 people under the age of 65 have early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. — Alzheimer’s Association

the Alzheimer’s Association reports that, in the United States alone, roughly 200,000 people under the age of 65 have early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, many people with early-onset are in their 40s and 50s. Recognizing that Alzheimer’s is not just for retirees but capable of affecting younger men and women with families and careers is important, as the Alzheimer’s Association points out that healthcare providers typically do not look for signs or symptoms of Alzheimer’s in young people. In such people, symptoms of Alzheimer’s may be incorrectly attributed to stress. Adults who suspect they might be suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s should have a comprehensive medical evaluation, which may include a neurological exam and/or brain imaging, conducted by a physician who specializes in Alzheimer’s disease.

Our Smart Medicare plan is $115.

According to a study from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, housing is the greatest expense in dollar amount and as a share of total expenditures for households in which a person 55 and older is considered the primary owner or renter of the home. Total annual household expenditures, which were culled from the BLS’ 2014 Consumer Expenditure Survey, totaled just over $49,000. These expenditures included food, housing, clothing, transportation, health care, and entertainment, among other expenses. The BLS study found that housing accounted for nearly one-third of annual household expenditures in households headed by people age 55 and older. In households headed by people between the ages of 65 and 74, housing expenses accounted for a slightly smaller percentage of overall annual expenditures, while housing accounted for 36.5 percent of overall expenditures in households headed by men and women age 75 and older. Such figures illustrate the need for men and women to account for housing expenses in their retirement planning. www.mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com

Smart ways to embrace retirement ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Retirement is on the horizon for a significant number of people. Around 10,000 people retire each day in the United States, according to a study by Merrill Lynch and Age Wave, a consultancy studying the cultural and economic impacts of aging. But many soon-to-be retirees are not fully prepared for life after their work life ends. Shedding new light on this next chapter can make retirement something to look forward to even more.

eat into retirement dollars. For those Americans who will be relying solely on Medicare, find a counselor who can spell out the intricacies of the plan, or use the free tool on Medicare. gov.

See retirement as a beginning, not an end Quite often soon-to-be retirees focus on the end of a career or the end of a stage in life without putting enough focus on the possibilities ahead. This is a prime time to find a new social network, travel, join a ministry, and much more.

How retired are you?

The U.S. Census Bureau says that employment-based insurance covered 55.4 percent of the population in 2015, the most recent years for figures, followed by Medicaid (19.5 percent) and Medicare (16 percent). Retirement can be an opportunity to shed an old skin and try on a new one - especially as it pertains to housing. There are options to downsize for empty-nesters or even to secure resources to “age in place.” According to United Income, a money management service, retirees should try out particular scenarios and locations prior to jumping in. Rent in a particular neighborhood, or house sit and try things on for size. Airbnb and other types of services can make this trial easy. A new outlook on retirement can open up a world of opportunities. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Retirement may no longer mean what it once did. Some retirees remove themselves entirely from the active employment market, while others prefer to keep at least one toe in the professional water. Some retirees change fields and do parttime work. Others may volunteer their time without getting paid. Still, some choose to use retirement as an opportunity to spearhead a new business venture that may not have been possible beforehand. Retirees should reflect on their goals, as well as their finances, and make plans accordingly.

Did you know? ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Over the last decade, seniors have become increasingly more savvy in regard to social media usage. The Pew Research Center found that, in 2015, around 35 percent of people age 65 and older reported using social media. That’s a large jump from just 2 percent in 2005. As of 2016, 65 percent of people between the ages 50 and 64 reported using social media, according to Pew. Social media usage among seniors continues to climb, although young adults still comprise the demographic most likely to use it. Among seniors ages 50 and older, Facebook is by far the most popular social media platform used, followed by Pinterest and LinkedIn.

Protecting Private Drinking Water Sources

Many people do not give much thought to their drinking water or where it comes from, only paying mind if the color, taste or pressure is unusual or if warnings are issued in the event of a water main break or flood. Water for homes and businesses is often sourced from municipal water sources, but private wells also provide water. According to the U.S. Census Housing Survey 2015, 13 million households in the United States rely on private wells to supply their water. Many of these homes are located in hard-to-reach or rural areas where municipal water pipes do not travel.

Dr. Joseph Jacquinot is a native of Dubuque, Iowa. He attended Loras College for his undergraduate studies and received his dental education at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in Iowa City, Iowa. He met his wife, Mandi, while attending Loras College. They were married in 2005 and have three children. He is committed to providing state of the art dentistry and has over 500 hours of continuing dental education. He is involved with numerous dental societies including the Wisconsin dental assocation and the academy of general dentistry. Their family is thrilled to be residents of Platteville and enjoy living in the community. Dr. Jacquinot enjoys biking, running, golf, hiking, and all forms of recreation. For more information, contact Dr. Joseph Jacquinot at Platteville Dental by calling (608) 348-2393.

Public water supplies are typically overseen by a governing body, such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency. However, these organizations may not regulate private wells, nor will they provide recommended criteria or standards for individual wells. As a result, it is up to individuals to make sure their well water is safe for consumption. Private well owners may be surprised to learn that, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, at least 20 percent of private wells contain contaminants, of which 23 percent have levels high enough to be a potential health concern.

The National Groundwater Association says county health departments can conduct water tests for bacteria and nitrates. Those who want to test for other substances can get a list of state-certified drinking water testing labs. For more information visit water.usgs.gov.

Well water is groundwater found in subterranean aquifers. This groundwater comes from rainfall that is absorbed in the soil and slowly seeps downward through the dirt, rock and various underground spaces. Along this path it can pick up contaminants. Unfortunately, many contaminants are undetectable to the eyes, nose and mouth. And unlike public drinking water systems, people with wells typically do not test their water as often as they should. The EPA says that well water should be tested annually for bacteria and nitrates. P.O. Box 325, Platteville, WI FREE Initial Assessment 608-330-0853 2maggiesmoments@gmail.com Sign up at my booth!

“I came in to see the guys at Rosemeyer Jones Chiropractic because of lower back pain with sharp pain going into my leg after hearing high praise from a family member that goes to the clinic. The pain was affecting everything for me, and never stopped hurting. I was being treated by a different chiropractor at the time every other day for a month without any relief or changes in symptoms. After a couple of different treatments with adjustments and the decompression table from Dr. Dan, I was able to function easier and best of all... I was able to go to sleep at night and begin considering working out again. After the first week, I was about 65% better, and after 2 weeks... 90% better. I wish I would have made this my first stop, instead of losing a month without results where I was previously going. I cannot stress enough how impressed I was with my experience at Rosemeyer Jones Chiropractic from the first consultation to the end result of feeling 100% better. Thank you very much for your help.”
