NEW HABITS FOR ENERGY SAVINGS. This year, consider a few new resolutions: • Keep up with maintenance. As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. Be sure to change filters regularly (as often as monthly), and seal and insulate ducts to improve efficiency.
See energystar.gov for more tips.
• Use a programmable thermostat. To maximize savings without sacrificing comfort, program the thermostat to lower the temperature by 8 degrees or more when you’re away from home or asleep. • Buy smarter. Buying a new TV or appliance? Consider ENERGY STAR® models that use less energy.

Grandparents are special people, so special many brides and grooms choose to honor them in their wedding. There are many ways to go about this from having grandparents serve in the wedding party to having ushers escort them into the wedding ceremony to writing a dedication to them in the wedding program. But, what do you do if your grandparents are no longer with you? How do you pay tribute to them? Traditions are an important way to honor grandparents no longer living. Research your grandparents’ weddings. Are there any traditions you can carry on? Can you get married on the same date or in the same place? Can you recite a beloved poem or verse? If not, can you incorporate any of your grandparents’ wedding attire into yours? Following the “something old” tradition, perhaps you could wear your grandfather’s top hat or your grandmother’s veil. Perhaps you could use their cake topper or feature their wedding rings in your bouquet. Photographs are a lovely way to remember grandparents no longer living. You can gather photos of your grandparents, perhaps of their wedding day, and include some in your wedding program. You can display the rest around the reception or use them as centerpieces for each table. You can even set up some photos of your grandparents on the favors table and donate to a charity in their honor in lieu of favors.
Music and food are also ideas. What were some of your grandparents’ favorite tunes? Perhaps you could include a few in the playlist for your reception. The same goes for food. What were some of your grandparents’ favorite foods? Perhaps you could include some of them in the dinner menu or pass them out as favors. If your grandmother adored chocolate-covered cherries, perhaps they could serve as your favors.
However you choose to remember your grandparents in your wedding, make sure you let guests know about it in the program. Write a dedication and make note of how you are paying tribute to your grandparents. That way, there will be no confusion as to why so many seats have been reserved at the church or so many daffodils scattered about at the reception.

Flowers are another way to pay tribute to grandparents no longer living. You can arrange to leave a seat open at the ceremony for each grandparent you want to honor and place a flower in the seat. You can have your florist insert a special flower into your bouquet for each grandparent you want to honor or have them recreate your grandmother’s wedding bouquet altogether for you to carry or display. You can have your florist create centerpieces from Reserve your grandparents’ favorite Your Special flowers for use in the ceremony and the reception. Appointment

Receptions used to be the place where guests mingled among food and friends and danced the night away before seeing the bride and groom off on their honeymoon. While great for guests who liked to dance, receptions did not offer guests who would rather not dance much to do other than to sit around and chat. If you were seated next to someone you knew, great. If not, you better prepare for a lot of small talk. But, now things are changing. Today many brides and grooms offer a variety of activities in addition to dancing to bring guests together and keep them entertained. Couples are recognizing that guests may not know each other and are incorporating ice breakers into their receptions. These can run the gamut from mad libs to trivia quizzes to story time. Instead of making small talk about the flower arrangements, for example, guests can get to know each other as they reflect on an episode in their life in the year the penny next to their plate was made. Once the ice is broken, couples can keep the fun going
with games that everyone can play. Bingo, garter relays, musical chairs, scavenger hunts and trivia quizzes are all games that can build camaraderie and keep guests entertained. In addition to helping guests get to know each other through group activities, couples are also recognizing the need for individual activities other than dancing. They are setting up tables for guests to play cards and board games and TVs and game consoles for guests to play video games. They are bringing out the basketballs, lawn darts and croquet sets for guests who like to be outdoors. With more to do, many guests are staying longer, making all of the time and money spent in planning the wedding more worthwhile. While some couples opt for the traditional reception dinner and dancing, others are going for a more laidback atmosphere, providing a wide range of activities for guests to take part in. The choice is yours. You can throw in some ice breakers amid dinner and dancing, or you can go all out and provide games and activities from beginning to end. Consider the needs of your guests and plan accordingly.

Picture a wedding dress. What do you see? A gorgeous ivory beaded gown, right? While most wedding dresses are some shade of white, other colors are making their way into the picture. Brides interested in a little color in their wedding no longer have to settle for it in their chair covers, tablecloths and centerpieces. Just as bridal bouquets are getting more colorful, so are bridal gowns.

For brides interested in a bit less color, white wedding gowns are available with a hint of color here and there. Many designers today are relying on embellishments like appliqués, beads, ribbons and sashes to add color to wedding dresses. A bride who adores red can still have her dreamy princess dress, made of yards and yards of satin and tulle, but with red floral appliqués sewn onto the tulle skirt overlay and a red satin ribbon tied around the waist to go with her ruby tiara.

Book Your Wedding Party &
online will uncover dozens of possibilities in an array of colors from deep red to emerald green to classy black. For brides who prefer the traditional but still yearn for some color, designers are making dresses with colored bodices and/or colored blocks in the skirt. A bride who looks lovely in blue can still have her cake and eat it too, with a bridal gown featuring a navy blue bodice and a white tulle skirt.
A Little Color Please

The options are endless when it comes to wedding dresses with color. Browse through some bridal magazines to see what color trends are hot, shop around online and check out some local boutiques. You’re sure to come across something that interests you, whether a white gown wrapped in black lace or a pale pink chiffon gown. Let The Fun Begin!
While there are no rules governing wedding invitations, there are some ways for couples to ensure they stay on schedule when mailing invitations. • Order invitations early. Couples can start to consider their invitation options once the wedding date and venue have been chosen. The wedding stationery industry has changed a lot over the years. Couples can now order invitations from local retailers, use online printers, or design and print their own invitations from home. Invitations should be worded carefully and proofed several times before printing, so expect the process to take a couple of weeks from start to finish. Plan for this time so you will have the invitations ready for mailing roughly three months before your wedding day. Always remember to order extra invitations so you have spares in case
• Get organized before mailing. Start preparing invitations about a month before you plan to ship them, as this gives you ample time to write envelopes so you do not have to write them all on the same day. Keep the guest list handy and double-check the spelling of names and the addresses. Traditional etiquette suggests addresses should be handwritten, but computer-produced calligraphy on envelopes is now just as acceptable. Avoid printed labels. Be sure to have the complete invitation weighed at the post office so you will know exactly how much postage is required. Purchase stamps for both the invitation and the response cards. • Coordinate mailing time and RSVP deadlines. Mail invitations roughly eight weeks before the wedding. This gives guests time to make room in their schedules and arrange for travel, if necessary. Set the response date for three weeks before the wedding date
is a perfect location for that outdoor wedding, a bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, or gift opening.

so guests will have the time to make a decision and mail back the response. Many caterers require a final head count one week before the wedding, so make sure your RSVP date is at least two weeks before the big day so you can account for late responders. • Don’t let responses linger. Check off who is coming and who cannot make it as you receive each response. This way you’ll know just how many responses are still outstanding and you can follow up if necessary.
