Started in 2010 by two former college students who were unhappy with the price gouging of the textbook resale industry, UsedTextbooks.com is a digital bookstore that is committed to giving students the best return rates for moderately used textbooks. Their devotion to students and savings set them apart from the rest.

Logo Design

- Logo Reference -

The logo design was influenced by the particular look and feel of stickers that mark textbooks as ‘used’ for resale. The edge of the sticker is slightly peeled, giving the brand a fun feel. From left to right clockwise: Full Color Logo, Grayscale Logo and Black-and-White Logo.

Positioning

- Units and Scale -

The logo was designed to have a 5x3 unit proportionality with a buffer zone of 1 unit on all side to keep sufficient breathing room.

The Logo should be used within the grid structure appropriately with the color scheme shown. On approved packaging, the wordage can be removed which then shifts the remaining logo to the centered position.

The versatility of the san serif font Franklin Gothic BT was chosen for its high legibility when printed as well as digital display which satisfies the array of needs within this primarily digital company.

Color Palette

The color palette is dominated by the cool blue highlighted by the stark black which trims the logo as well as grounds the text portion of the design. The secondary colors were meant to play a subtle supporting role with the complementary burnt orange and soft shade of blue which are mostly seen within the digital interface.

These motifs can be seen throughout the bands in a variety of digital as well as print applications to accentuate and support the overall conformity of the brands identity.

A well designed shipping box that incorporates visual cues was impertinent for this company since the majority of its product activity would be based on distribution via the mail. Within the shipping box design are three important visual reminders: the logo, the phone number and the URL.

More for corporate use than product distribution, personalized envelopes will keep the company’s identity professional while enhancing the company image through the notion of a custom-tailored design.

- Letterhead and Business Cards Within the stationery, the “bound box” motif is used as a seat for the body of text within any document. This stationery can function bilaterally as the official letterhead for important documents as well as for clerical use. The front of the business card incorporate the signature logo with the “star bust” motif which makes this business card easily recognizable and never lost within our client’s stack.

For promotional giveaways or for corporate leisure events, this tee shirt has it all. With its tie-die inspired look and large logo on the shirt front, this shirt portrays all the features of the company’s image.

To be consistent with the company image, it was important to choose an array of imagery that would appear to portray fresh-faced college students mixed with the notion of putting money-in-hand. The imagery has to be approachable, so that the company gives off a similar, positive vibe.

It was important that construction of the application icon be a direct descendant of the logo itself. Slight deviations occur due to the standardized structure of an application icon. The unique “U” design within the brand’s insignia was a perfect fit for logo recognition.
