KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS In Service To One – In Service To All Richard Council #788

LANSING COLUMBIAN AUGUST 2012 - Volume 1007 #2 Monthly Available at: kofc788.org

A Message From Your Grand Knight . . . . . . My Brother Knights and Families: Vivat Jesus!! I hope everyone is surviving the summer heat wave and staying as cool as possible. Let me start out this month’s article with a bit of housekeeping. The 2012-2013 budget is posted at the council hall for your review and input. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns or you are welcome to attend the August business meeting for further comment/input. As the new year is ramping up we are starting to become busy with council activities such as the family pig roast (8/11), Texas holdem, monthly dinners, family masses etc…Times and information about upcoming events will be posted at the council hall. As always we enjoy seeing new faces, so come on down and make some new friends. With all these upcoming activities and events we are looking for volunteers to help out. It’s a great way to get involved and get to know your brother Knights. I am a firm believer that if everybody does a little no one has to do a lot. If you are a new member and are not sure how to get involved or have questions about Council 788, feel free to contact me (Mike Schaefer) at 517-242-4961. In closing I would like to invite everyone to the Family Mass at St. Gerard Parish on Sunday, July 29th, at 9:00AM. As usual the Knights and their families will meet in the vestibule a few minutes before mass and walk in together. I am looking forward to another great turn out and encourage the members and families that regularly come to personally invite a new family or a fellow Knight to join us. Hope to see you there. God Bless Mike Schaefer Grand Knight, Council #788

THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS - IN SERVICE TO ONE, IN SERVICE TO ALL

From The Corporation President

Jay G. Corey

If you have ever come into the club, you likely have seen the smiling face of the man to the left with his hand outstretched and a smile on his face as he says, “Kussmauls the name, I assume you know yours”. R. Jay has become a fixture at our club, and for the last six years was the LCA President. It was R. Jay who mentored me as the LCA Treasurer acting as my mentor, guide, friend and grandfather, and everything else rolled into one. You could not have asked for a better teacher and friend for the last six years. R. Jay has decided to step down as the LCA President, and as I take over this task, I know R. Jay is right there with me to mentor me and help me take over the reins of the LCA. Many things have happened under R. Jay’s watch that has benefited the LCA to the position that it is in today. R. Jay introduced the Pull Tabs which has kept us afloat. He has led us through good times and difficult times always with a smile on his face, and the love of his life, Katie, beside him. Parking lot improvements, the Cash Bash, The Grass Is Greener, the new drain field, fish frys, 50/50’s, and much more, and always willing to help out any time or place with that smile on his face. He is everyone’s friend, father, and grandfather and we are the beneficiaries of his leadership and this wonderful person. I have asked R. Jay to be the President’s Assistant and sit on the LCA board. Though he will not have voting rights, his experience and easy going manner will help us and me insure that the LCA course is steady and forging ahead. Thank you R. Jay for all you have given to us these past years !!!! There are a lot of things that we will be doing in the coming months ahead as we work with the council on events that will have something for everyone at our club. Coming up first is the 3rd Annual Pig Roast on August 11th in which everyone is welcome. Following that, the next day on August 12th , is the 4th Degree Annual Picnic which will also be at the club, and everyone is welcome whether or not you are a 4th Degree member. Our Cash Bash is set for September 22nd and tickets will be available by the time you read this article. Again we are selling 300 tickets with tons of money to be won including the first prize of $1,000. I am asking all of you to get involved and buy just ONE ticket for $20.00. You do not have to be present to win but I need your help to make this a success. If you cannot get to the club to buy a ticket, I am asking that you put $20.00 in an envelope either cash or a check made payable to the Lansing Columbian Association, and send it to me at the club address of 5300 N. Grand River Avenue, Lansing, Michigan 48906. I will personally send you a ticket by return mail as your entry. This year as in past years we will have MSU on the tv’s in the club for the football season. You and your family and guests are always welcome to come down and root the Spartans to a victory. New this year will be a WESTERN NIGHT which is set for Saturday, November 10th. The electrifying sounds of the KATHY FORD BAND will fill the club with country and variety music. More information will follow in future issues of the Newsletter. We are going to have a lot of fun this year and together with our Grand Knight Mike Schaefer and the council, we hope to see more of you here and enjoying your club and facility. I thank you for putting your trust in me and your elected board officers to continue on with the tradition of fraternity at your facility.

First, I would like to start with some old business. I would like to thank our Past Grand Knight Bill Chasse’ for his service this past year. From The Ladies Auxiliary

By Vice-President Pattie Schaefer

As the Ladies Auxiliary gets ready for our first meeting of the year I would like to take a second to acknowledge some amazing women. First, I would like to say a heartfelt goodbye to a wonderful and dedicated woman; Freida Knapp. Frieda was a woman of faith, kindness and what seemed like boundless energy. Her pride and joy was her son Ronnie and her dedication to him and others with disabilities was absolute. Through her efforts the Ladies Auxiliary became involved in many projects with the disabled and I for one have learned to be more compassionate and understanding of people with special needs. I thank her for that and look forward to continuing her legacy through the Ladies Auxiliary. Second, I want to congratulate Carlene Schmidt’s on being voted last year’s Lady of the Year, it is well deserved. And finally, I personally want to thank Jeanine the Ladies Auxiliary Thomas for her hard work this past year and for agreeing to stay on as President for a second year, I am excited to be her “right hand man”. Ultimately one of the purposes of the Ladies Auxiliary is a supportive role in the charitable work of the Grand Knight, and the Knights of Council 788. This year will be a busy (but fun) year for the Ladies Auxiliary as we have many projects on the books already including, the Don Quixote Halloween party and Spring Fling for individuals with disabilities, the annual Christmas Auction as well as the Francis O’Donnell Christmas project for those in need; just to name a few. Recently, the State Community Activities Director, Mike Wegener asked for the assistance of the Ladies Auxiliary with some exciting and important projects which will greatly benefit our community. The details of these projects will be discussed at our first meeting. Another goal for this upcoming year is to re-open the By-laws for review and possible changes; a committee was formed at the end of last year to take on that task. Thank you to those who volunteered. There has also been the mention of a yearend ladies trip…so bring your ideas to our first meeting on Wednesday, September 5th at 7:00pm. All ladies are welcome and remember dues are only five dollars a year and you can’t get a better deal anywhere.

BOWLERS WANTED The 2012 – 2013 bowling season is almost upon us and bowlers both regular and subs are needed. If you are interested, please contact our Grand Knight Mike Schaefer at 517-242-4961. The season begins on Thursday, September 6th and we bowl at 6:00 pm at Royal Scot. We need you so come on and have some fun !!!

Parking To Get Easier Thanks to several knights, the lot to the east of us has been cleaned up and we will start using it for overflow parking for many of our events like fish frys etc. Thanks to GK Mike Schaefer, DGK Dane Jurkovic, PGK Bill Chasse, Manager John Drzik, Jeff Lorencen, Mark Wawiernia, R. Jay Kussmaul, Dave Hummel, Jay Corey, Ron Cook, and John Rademacher.
