Join us at the Ritherdon Road Street Party, Sunday June 11! The independent traders of Ritherdon Road and ourselves were absolutely delighted with the turnout, community feel and wave of enjoyment cascading through last year’s Ritherdon Road Street Party. “Smiling faces, full tummies and relaxed parents... what a day, what a day!” As Johny from Gallery Midnight put it. In 2017, with Ritherdon Road once again closed to traffic, from 11am to 5pm this year’s event will see over 60 stalls offering everything from sizzling streetfood to bold beers; from delicious desserts to gorgeous gifts; and from heavenly haberdashery to Turkish towels. A professional stage hosting such favourites as The Hayward Sisters, Inspire Ballet & Dance, kids entertainers Funky Moves, rock choir Balhamonics and various rock acts will entertain the thousands who attend, while Minnie the Clown and the Ministry of Giggles will entertain the kids across the event throughout the day. You’ll find more about the event, Ritherdon Road and its traders within these pages. This SW17 event has been made possible by the support of James Pendleton Estate Agents, Places for People Leisure (Balham Leisure Centre), Hot Yoga South and As Nature Intended. The Ritherdon Road Traders would like to thank them and everyone else who makes this event come to life – including their amazing customers! See you on the 11th. I got into this line of business, and then opened in Ritherdon Road, because.... ANDY: I simply loved the freedom of visting interesting markets with the chance of finding amazing treasures. The shop in Ritherdon Road is ideal: we love the space we have for our workshop, garden and sunny terrace.
DEE: I grew up in the kitchen. I was asthmatic (dairy-free) and my cousin was coeliac, so my mum and I cooked all from scratch. I opened here because as a parent I thought Balham lacked a café with a play area... to give us all 5 minutes peace!
DAVID: I’d wanted to run my own restaurant ever since I began cooking, and quality French food has always been my passion. Thankfully the latter is true for many local residents as well, so I’m very grateful to our customers for that.
DEAN: It’s a family company. My mother and father met at the dry cleaners where they worked and launched Spectrum in 1971. We opened here because we knew local residents would appreciate a higher quality service.

I got into this line of business, and then opened in Ritherdon Road, because.... RON: A while back I decided to retire to pursue my passion for photography, and what could be better than to start a business in Ritherdon Road where friendship and community spirit thrives in abundance.
JOHNY: Why did I become an artist? I just wasn’t any good at anything else! Having worked everywhere from the French Alps to the Caribbean: Tooting and Balham were just the next obvious choice.
SIMON: I’d been importing wines from small producers and whirling around the UK selling to restaurants for years. Opening a shop near my home so I could spend more time with my family and walk to work with my dog Dash was an obvious step.
THE TEAM AT BODEAN’S: Bodean’s is a Kansas style, family orientated BBQ restaurant; our goal is to ensure every guest leaves happy and hurrying back. Balham is an awesome, vibrant community of which we’re proud to be a part.

Fast Facts 1. The road is part of the Heaver Estate Conservation Area, a designation bestowed in 1978 as a result of the area’s “special architectural or historic interest”.
2. The Heaver Estate was built on farmland and the grounds of a large country house called Bedford Hill House. The house was demolished in 1897.
3. The Estate was built by Alfred Heaver in the 1890s. He considered it his best work and “the finest estate in London’.
4. WWII saw 250 of its houses damaged or destroyed by bombs, plus the universal removal of decorative iron railings and gates to go towards the war effort. Information extracted from the ‘Heaver Estate Conservation Area Appraisal & Management Strategy’ available on www.wandsworth.gov.uk
