Parents of ADHD children are often under a tremendous amount of stress. Being the go-to person in charge of their child's behavior, they are constantly bombarded by pleas from teachers and others to do more about their child's disruptive actions. Many parents feel guilty, as if their child's ADHD is their fault. Experts agree that ADHD symptoms are usually the result of a problem with brain chemistry. Although feelings of guilt are often experienced by parents, ADHD symptoms are not normally the fault of the parent or the result of poor parenting skills. If you are struggling, know that there is help for parents of the ADHD child. One of the most effective things a parent can do is learn as much about ADHD as possible. Learning about the disorder can provide a ready arsenal of techniques to cope with the disorder as well as deal with particular behaviors. Instead of getting angry when a child forgets to bring a coat or lunch box home from school, a parent can suggest proven methods that can help children be more focused and attentive to daily activities. Knowledge and open discussion about ADHD with your child can be one of the most effective ways of dealing with symptomatic behaviors. It is easy for parents to feel like a one man, (or woman), army when dealing with teachers, friends or neighbors. Parents of ADHD children do not have to go it alone. Think about seeing a professional counselor who can meet with you, your spouse and your child on a regular basis. Counselors have experience with many ADHD families and know what can, and what doesn't work when dealing with the disorder. More than likely there are also local support groups in your area for parents with ADHD children. Meeting with ADHD parents and children and seeing how other families cope can renew one's own strength and resolve. Organizations like CHADD, (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Disorders) and ADDA, (National Attention Deficit Disorder Association), can also be of assistance. It can seem like parenting leaves no time for other activities. Taking a break and enjoying favorite pastimes will allow you relieve stress and be a more effective parent. Make a date for dinner and a movie, exercise, or a your favorite TV show. Give yourself regular mini vacations rather than waiting until you let stress get the best of you. Take care of yourself and you can better take care of your child. Parents of ADHD children should strive to keep a positive attitude, recent progress in medications and alternative treatment options are making it easier to cope and find effective means to treat the disorder. Realize that many of the traits that ADHD children have, such as an abundance of energy and enthusiasm, can be channeled in positive directions. See your child as having many unique qualities, abilities and talents and not as just another child with symptoms of ADHD.
