CJA 345 Module 1 Assignment 3 Juvenile Boot Camp Programs

For more classes visit www.snaptutorial.com Centervale councilman Pete Parsimonious has received funding requests for two competing juvenile corrections boot camp programs and requires your assistance on how to evaluate program success through appropriate research. There is a general perception that one of the two programs is only marginally successful while the other succeeds through much lower recidivism rates. Of course, the director for each program cites the outstanding success of his or her program in the funding application but fails to provide any research data to support these claims. The intent of this assignment is to help you refer to empirical-based observations that can be quantitative (e.g., expressed as numbers) or qualitative (e.g., expressed as objects, words, or pictures)—specifically, the assignment will help you understand why one boot camp excels over the other in statistical terms particularly relating to lower recidivism rates. Tasks: 1. Conduct research related to juvenile justice boot camp programs using the Argosy University Online Library resources, the National Institute of Justice Data Collections, or the National Criminal Justice Reference Service Databases. 2. Look for potential pitfalls in boot camp programs. Select two articles from your research that have taken different approaches to evaluate boot camp programs.

3. Based on the programs you read about, prepare a memo. In the memo: 1. Describe the research approaches and types of data that were utilized in each of the two studies. 2. Identify any ethical issues Parsimonious should be concerned about as a city councilman making a recommendation to invest public funds in a program of this type. Provide the reason for your choice. 3. Discuss whether either of these approaches should be recommended to Parsimonious and support your position based on the effectiveness and impact of the program. You might also comment on the setbacks or failure issues if reported in the studies you have chosen. 4. Be sure to cite the resources you used in the APA style. 5. 6. 7. 8. ************************************************* **** 9. 10. 11.

For more classes visit www.snaptutorial.com

CJA 345 Module 2 Assignment 2 Research Planning Matrix A matrix is a tool that can be used as a job aid in any number of positions within the criminal justice system. In this assignment, you will work with a matrix that will help you map out different types of research and identify when one or another research design might be useful. You will be able to use the completed matrix throughout the rest of this course as a quick reference when formulating a response for other course assignments. Tasks: Given below is the Research Planning Matrix. The matrix lists six different research designs that have been identified by Kraska and Neuman (2008): survey, evaluation, existing document, experimental, historical, and interview. Each of the different research designs is defined for you. To complete the matrix, you must find an example of each type of research design. That is, you must find a journal article that fits into each category. In the Examples column of your matrix, place a web link or a citation in the APA format for each article. After you have located the articles, you must identify the data collection techniques used by each author, the quantitative and qualitative elements of each article, and the chief characteristics of each article. Please note that the first example, survey research, has been completed as an example. • Access the Research Planning Matrix and review the topics to be addressed. • Complete the matrix so that the end product compares the different research designs, data collection techniques, and quantitative and qualitative elements, as well as the chief characteristics of each research design. • Prepare a synthesis statement that outlines the most significant similarities and differences observed among the items shown in the matrix. You will submit two documents for this assignment: the completed Research Planning Matrix, which will be submitted as a Microsoft Excel worksheet, and a synthesis statement, which will be submitted as a Microsoft Word document.

CJA 345 Module 3 Assignment 2 LASA 1 Cultural, Ethical, and Other Considerations Impacting Research Efforts

For more classes visit www.snaptutorial.com Charles Draper, Centervale's Chief of Police, must introduce policies that positively impact the control and management of illegal immigration in his city. He is without the knowledge base needed to develop policy and has turned to you for assistance with research in one of the following areas: • Surveillance techniques techniques: Chief Draper is aware of many surveillance techniques that can be utilized in tracking and controlling illegal immigrants in his city. The Chief would like information regarding the most successful surveillance techniques as demonstrated in published research. Specifically, you are to research and address, but not limited to, the following surveillance

technique examples: vehicle tracking, cell phone, e-mail, background checks, and computer and surveillance techniques. Crime mapping mapping: Chief Draper knows that many law enforcement agencies use crime-data mapping generated from within their own communities to allocate resources, as indicated by the data. In particular, the Chief would like to know how the data are generated and then how the data are applied to police tactics. Your research should include but not limited to the following crime mapping areas: geographic information systems, census demographics, geographical profiles, and community and other crime mapping techniques. Staffing needs needs: Draper believes that the problems associated with illegal immigration require quick response times, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He's not sure that his staff is properly allocated for optimal response times. What types of research data and studies can the Chief consult? Where can he find the best resources to support the various shift and staffing patterns if and when the Chief decides to reallocate his staff? Specifically, you are to explore asset mapping which is a technique for determining what assets (human, organizational and fiscal) are available in the police department to address the key issue of illegal immigration used to provide the background information needed to conduct the staffing review and suggest appropriate changes to the existing policy.

Here Here’’s What You Need To Do . . . You are to specifically cite and reference the various resources available to address these critical areas so that the Chief has the appropriate research to make policy recommendations based on what you have presented. In reference to this assignment, please be as comprehensive as possible in analyzing, evaluating and presenting your objective findings that potentially will have current and future policy implications. Your interpretation should be based on the findings, as well as, evaluating the current situation and applying research findings to support and/or reject the Chiefs request for information in these respective critical areas.

Module 2, Based on the media-based research data matrix you created inModule select one of the research areas identified above and prepare a 5-6 page memo to Chief Draper that addresses the Chief's concerns. In your memo you must: • Recommend research approaches or options that could fulfill the Chief's information needs. • Provide a comparison of the two types of research designs that seem most appropriate for the Chief's information needs supported by data from your media-based research data matrix. • Recommend good/reliable data sources. Given the sensitive and possible controversial nature of the policy, provide advice on cultural, ethical, or other considerations that could impact research efforts and results. The following databases are available to support your research. 1. American Academy of Forensic Sciences 2. International Association for Identification 3. Law Enforcement National Data Exchange 4. National Criminal Justice Reference Service National Institute of Justice

CJA 345 Module 4 Assignment 2 Information Needs of Various Components of the Criminal Justice System

For more classes visit www.snaptutorial.com Prison overcrowding is a major issue in virtually every state and in many municipalities. This is a noted problem nationwide. The reasons are that judges are sentencing more offenders to jails and prisons. State and federal sentencing guidelines have prescribed specific sentencing ranges for various types off offenders and offenses committed. Inmate populations are increasing due to the number of repeat offenders returning to our jails and prison systems. It is a documented fact that at the local, state, and federal levels, prison and jail populations are at an all-time high. The research reported in the National Institute of Justice supports these positions and has the appropriate documentation to support these notions. While there are a great many research studies on the broad subject of prison overcrowding, making use of research findings can be a daunting task. You must consider the information needs of the various components of the criminal justice system: • Law Enforcement • Courts • Corrections • Juvenile Justice • Homeland Security The various components of the criminal justice system really do not act independently of one another. The system is directly impacted by each component. For instance, when law enforcement arrests more individuals, the courts now have to hear and decide the cases, which impacts court dockets. Large court dockets mean that there is a backlog of cases but they are eventually heard and decided. Then, convicted offenders are given correctional sentences, ranging from probation, community service, and community corrections to jail and prison time. As a result, eventually our correctional institutions get filled up and

become highly overcrowded. In essence, each criminal justice system component has a direct impact on the other parts of the system. Tasks: 1. Locate at least two research articles on the topic of prison overcrowding from either the National Institute of Justice Data Collections or the National Criminal Justice Reference Service Databases. The studies do not necessarily have to agree on conclusions or recommendations. 2. Prepare a 3–4 page paper that includes a summary of the research articles and describes how you would present the findings of the studies for each of the five components of the criminal justice system listed above. 3. Be sure to support your recommendations with authoritative sources and cite all references in the APA style. 4. 5. 6. 7. ***************************************************** 8. 9. 10.
