Windows PowerShell includes a collection of cmdlets that you can use to manage folder shares and their permissions. NTFS has a system of permissions that you can use to authorize specific degrees of user access to files and folders. Storage Spaces enables administrators to create storage pools out of physical disks. They can then create virtual disks from the pooled storage, irrespective of the boundaries between physical disks. Virtual disks in storage pools can be configured to use mirroring, in which data is stored in duplicate, and parity, in which data bits are stored with parity information for data recovery purposes. Tiered storage is a feature of virtual that uses faster SSD drives in a storage pool to store the most frequently used files. iSCSI is a storage area networking protocol that enables Windows servers (called initiators) to connect to storage devices (called targets) using standard Ethernet hardware. iSNS is essentially a registry for iSCSI components that enables initiators to locate the targets available on the network. Datacenter Bridging (DCB) is a mechanism for separating LAN and SAN traffic on a converged network. DCB works by creating classes of network traffic that are assigned a specific percentage of the available bandwidth. Multipath I/O is a fault tolerance mechanism that enables a server to access a networked storage device through redundant paths, in the event of a component failure. Storage Replica is a feature in the Datacenter edition that enables administrators to create replication partnerships between servers, between clusters, or within a stretch cluster. Data Deduplication is a Windows Server 2016 feature that conserves storage space by splitting files into chunks and storing only one copy each redundant chunk. By operating on entire volumes instead of individual files, the savings rate for many data types can range from 50% to over 90%. Data Deduplication has three predefined usage scenarios that contain settings to maximize storage savings and server performance. Once enabled, you can use PowerShell cmdlets and Windows Event logs to monitor the ongoing progress of Data Deduplication jobs. Data Deduplication is particularly suitable for backup targets because of the redundant nature of the data stored there.
