The workshop introduces participants to practical aspects of biodynamic farming and gardening. Led by highly experienced biodynamic experts, Hamish Mackay and John Priestly, participants learn the philosophy, theory and ‘how-to’ of biodynamics. Operating biodynamically for more than 10 years and fully certified biodynamic, Krinklewoods Hunter Valley Vineyard is the ideal host venue. At this informal practical workshop, participants are able to fill and bury the cow horns, get hands on with compost making and creating the cow-pat-pit. They can see the mid-row cover crops planted as insect deterrents, with buckwheat, red clover, marigolds, lucerne, dill & coriander to name a few. Deadbolt locks are a way to increase the security of your house. Installing a deadlock to your premises is an easy task with the right tools and instructions. DOOR SIZE Make sure to measure your door size before you purchase the lock. Most deadbolt lock manufacturers provide step-by-step installation instructions to meet a variety of door sizes. It is important to read and understand these instructions before you commence the installation. MARKING Using the template provided, mark out the mounting and cylinder holes on the door’s side. Use a combination square to make sure that the template is square with the door. Drill pilot holes for the mounting screws. DRILLING Using a hole saw attached to your drill, begin drilling the marked cylinder area. To achieve a neat cut without splintering, remove when the pilot bit comes through the door, then finish the cut from the other side. Drill the bolt hole with a spade bit according to the template position.

INSERTING BOLT Insert the bolt and mark with pencil the outline of the latch plate. Remove the bolt and chisel a mortise for the latch plate. Make sure it is flush with the door’s edge. Drill pilot holes, and secure the bolt to the door with screws. Place the cylinder into the cylinder hole from the outside face of the door, making sure that the lock’s label is upright. Next set the interior piece in place, and align the screw holes with the mounting holes inside the lock. Finally fasten the deadbolt in place with screws. INSTALLING STRIKER PLATE Mark the end of the bolt with ink so that when you close the door and turn the deadbolt several times, a mark will remain on the door frame. Now drill the bolt hole with a spade bit in the door frame. Mark and mortise the striker plate so that it will fit flush with the door frame. Drill pilot holes, and secure the striker plate to the door with screws. Test the lock for proper action.

Applying sealers, stains and finishes to timber should help to prevent rotting, warping and splitting and protect timber from the harsh outside elements. Correctly applied timber treatments could extend the life of your timber whilst making timber more attractive. EXTERIOR TIMBER CARE Timber which is exposed to the sun, wind and rain needs to be protected. This can be done by painting or using a timber finish which still allows the natural beauty of the timber to be seen. PRE-TREATMENT: Pre-treatment for timber will help to reduce cracking, warping and movement, particularly if the timber is to be exposed for some time before it is painted or a finish applied (e.g. during construction). A pre-treatment will also improve the paint durability. Application of wood preservative Apply to dry, clean, grease free surfaces, preferably as a 3 minute dip or as a flood brush application to all faces with careful attention given to end joints. If timber is already fixed, liberally apply preservative with a brush to all exposed surfaces. Allow 4 hours drying time under normal temperature and conditions. PREPARATION FOR CLEAR FINISH: New timber: Ensure that the timber is dry and free from dirt or wax. Sand surface smooth and dust off. Previously varnished timber: Ensure that surface is free from loose flaking varnish, dirt and wax if varnish is badly worn or peeling. It must be completely removed. APPLYING A CLEAR FINISH: Apply an exterior high gloss clear finish to protect timber. This finish highlights the natural grain of the timber as well as absorbing ultra violet light from the sun. NEW TIMBER: Apply one coat of exterior clear, thinned 5-10% with turps (water & oil based), then fill nail

holes and cracks with an exterior grade putty or filler. Apply two more generous coats straight from the can, sanding lightly between coats. Previously varnished timber in good condition: Two generous coats of exterior clear may be sufficient. However, a more durable result will be obtained with a third coat. NOTE: This method is not recommended for walk areas or interior surfaces. OIL FINISHES: Oil finishes produce an attractive natural matt finish. This type of finish is ideal for smooth or rough sawn timber on hand rails, outdoor furniture and decking. The timber retains its natural colour without hiding the grain. The oil finish penetrates deep into the timber to prevent it drying out and preserves it from the weather. APPLICATION: Apply two full coats at 12 hour intervals. Allow to dry for a minimum of 48 hours after the final coat. Lightly sand along grain with fine No. 400 grade, wet and dry paper. Be careful when sanding edges. Wipe off dust with clean dry cloth. Thoroughly wet the surface with the oil finish. While wet, rub vigorously along the grain with a pad of fine steel wool, until smooth. Remove surplus oil by rubbing surfaces thoroughly with a soft clean cloth. Allow to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before use. D.I.Y. Hints and Tips 1. Top quality paints not only give you easier and better coverage, but are longer lasting and easier to clean than low grade paints. Budget for the best - it pays in the long run.
