Time For Holiday Touches
It may be surprising to learn, but this time of year is extremely busy for interior designers, as their clients are eager to have the finishing touches made to their homes for the holidays. Despite that, three local designers have taken the time to share some holiday decorating ideas. Sherry Sarine, design principal and owner of SSI Design Group in Greensboro, pointed out, “While white lights and silver balls have always been a mainstay of holiday decorating, color has returned and brings new life into our homes.” She said that while there will always be a place for the traditional reds and greens, a recent trend is to use blues and golds; turquoise and silvers; or purples and greens. She also said, “Multicolored tree lights have become popular again, as have larger ornaments.” As far as specific hints for dinner tables, Sarine suggested colorful beaded placemats with mismatched black and white dishes combined with natural greenery and silver accents as shown in the photo. Or, “for a more sophisticated look, try using a crisp white tablecloth with black placemats along with a table centerpiece of white candles and floating cranberries to give extra punch to our holiday table,” she said. And for decorating the other areas of the home, she said, “With recycling and repurposing being so popular today, it’s always great to think outside the box and incorporate something old into your holiday decorating scheme. A small lidded wooden box that typically sits in a closet holding old pictures can become a wonderful entry display filled with pine boughs and a colorful ribbon.” Mason Garner, the owner of Decorative Magic in High Point, also encouraged people to look at what

Holiday decorating colors have expanded beyond the traditional red and green and now include, among others, turquoise and silvers; blues and golds; and purples and greens. they already own, and what’s in their backyards, when it comes to the holidays. Said Garner, “We try to use a lot of fresh cut things from the yard. Especially with the economy the way it is.” She suggested using cuttings from nandinas and holly bushes, as well as gathering pine cones and twigs and arranging them on a “brass tray or in a silver bowl, or any accessory that you already have in your home.” She also suggested adding some ornaments to the arrangement. Or “take your candlesticks and, using a piece of wire, attach a holly twig to it.” Simple touches like this can add color and freshness to your current decor. When it comes to lights, “The more the better,” Garner said. “I love lots of lights.” She recommended filling a glass bowl or votive candleholder with a string of lights and adding ornaments and greenery, either on a counter or
the mantle. And any color goes. She said she still leans toward white lights in the dining room, but adds colored lights in other areas. And Garner likes to include some kind of decorating in just about every room. “One other thing I like to do is add a fun little ornament on the toilet paper holder in the powder room,” she said. “Just some kind of cheer that will make people take notice and smile. Garner agreed with Sarine that colors in holiday decorating have expanded to include the out of the ordinary, such as fuscia, aqua and other bright colors. This year, Garner’s shop is decked out for the holidays in burgundy, gold, copper and black. But for those who are traditionalists, do not despair. As I pondered my message for this Thanksgiving holiday, I thought about an article I read recently about the difference between feeling grateful and thankful. While the words could be interchanged easily, I realized that “grateful” is an emotion you feel deeply inside. “It comes from a deeper place that knows that the story could have ended differently, and often does.” Giving thanks to someone is showing appreciation. You can “thank” someone but gratitude is a whole different level. Over the past year I have witnessed the struggle of many friends and business associates to remain viable in our current economic circumstances; some have succeeded and, unfortunately, others have not. As a company we have survived our own struggles, and having done so makes me extremely grateful. Many people have contributed to our ability to do so; my gratitude to these people goes far beyond just being thankful
because I know without their support the story could have had a very different ending. First of all I want to recognize our customers and clients who made courageous decisions and took advantage of the truly unique opportunity in front of them to buy, sell or build a home during an uncertain time – but also a time when both rates and prices have never been better. Next I must say that without the dedicated agents and staff at Coldwell Banker Triad, Realtors, who have never wavered or complained when asked to do more with less, we would not have had the success that we have enjoyed over the past year. On a larger scale I am grateful for the freedom we all enjoy in this country and the men and women who ferociously protect that freedom. Lastly, it’s the moments of laughter and sadness in life and those who participated in those moments that bring a smile to my face and gladness to my heart. I am grateful for the love and support I feel daily and thankful to my family, friends, and coworkers who provide it. I am looking forward to better days for all of us, to all the opportunities that lie ahead of us and to continuing to grow as a company, but most of all, I am simply grateful that I live in a wonderful city, and a wonderful country! I wish everyone a holiday full of gratitude and blessing.
