DLM also has the honor of being a member of the Professional Remodelers Council, an elite group that consists of 14 remodeling contractors from all over the US. Since the members are not in direct competition with each other, they are able to critique each other’s work and share ideas, experiences, technical expertise, management and administration systems, as well as remodeling and construction insights at their biannual meetings. Here in Greensboro, the Millsaps are active in the Greensboro Builders Association (GBA) and the GBA’s Remodelers Council. He said he feels it has enriched his life spiritually and also helped him become a better team leader here at home. Those team leadership skills are vital to the coordination of DLM’s current work. Right now, DLM is involved in a number of projects, one of which is for Greensboro’s First Presbyterian Church on North Elm Street. Additional space is needed for the installation of a new pipe organ in First Presbyterian’s little chapel. DLM has been called upon to do the work. Another project is the upcoming renovation of a 1917 Craftsman style home in Fisher Park. This project is still in the early planning stages, but DLM is working on a design that will bring 21st century energy efficiency to this early 20th century home. One of the possibilities that DLM is excited about, and that is being considered for the home, is a geo-thermal heating and cooling system. Another energy efficient tool that DLM is using in some of their projects is structural insulated panels (SIPs) – high-performance building panels used in floors, walls and roofs for residential and light commercial buildings. SIPs are a form of pre-fabricated walls and roofs that look like an ice cream sandwich. A rigid foam core of insulation is squeezed between two “skins.” Usually the skins are made of oriented strandboard (OSB), but they can also be made of other materials such as plywood or fiber board for specific applications. The SIPs arrive at the building site ready for installation with window and door openings already cut out. These structural insulated panels make stronger homes that go up faster than traditional stick building, saving labor costs and reducing heating and cooling expenditures. It has been reported that, because of the tight thermal barrier SIPs provide, heating

and cooling bills have been reduced by up to as much as 50 percent. And with the new Environmental Protection Agency regulations in place as of Jan. 1, 2012, requiring new homes to be 15 percent more energy efficient than the previous International Energy Conservation Code required, the use of SIPs in construction will certainly grow. SIPs help builders meet these requirements faster and easier than with traditional wood framing. Another idea whose time has come is designing interiors and exteriors to allow older residents to remain in their homes – often referred to as aging in place. Both David and Leslie are specialists in designing and remodeling homes to accommodate the needs of older adults and people with special needs. As the baby boomers age, both they and their parents are looking for ways to adapt their homes to their changing needs. David pointed out that aging in place applications aren’t just for older adults and folks with special needs, however. Universal design elements such as raised countertops, wider doorways and no-threshold shower doors are conveniences all people can appreciate no matter what their age or abilities. Another major part of DLM’s business is the design and remodeling of kitchens and baths. Always popular as a means of selling a home, updating these two rooms is something people who plan to remain in their homes are now electing to do for themselves. David said that with their team of tradespersons and suppliers, they can make these renovations a relatively painless process for the homeowner.
