For more than 50 years, the Greensboro Builders Association (GBA) has served those in the building and construction businesses in the Greensboro and Guilford County area. Currently, the trade association represents more than 650 area businesses. But did you know that you don’t have to be a constructionbased business to be a member? The GBA is a great resource for a variety of businesses, from the traditional, such as contractors, to the more unexpected, such as insurance agents. According to Cheryl Collins, executive officer of the GBA, the association is a great networking opportunity for a host of businesses. “Anyone that wants to do business within the building industry is welcome,” she said. Collins added that this includes businesses who want the chance to market, or network, within the building industry. “Sometimes people think ‘I don’t sell to builders, so there is no reason for me to join.’ But they don’t look at the fact that this is a collective group of small businesses,” she explained. Collins said the GBA is a wonderful networking option for anyone from a caterer to a photographer, or from a
printer to a newspaper. “If you’ve got a product that another business would want to buy, the GBA lets you engage with other businesses,” she said. Members agree that the GBA is a
valuable resource. Sherry Sarine, SSI Design Group, said, “The relationships and connections I have made through the networking events are ones that have directly resulted in increased business.” Bill Tech, Pest Management Inc. added, “Becoming a member of the GBA is one the wisest decisions we’ve made at Pest Management Inc.” He continued, “Not only are the networking opportunities and the contacts we’ve made incredible, but we’ve also had a chance to help our community through the association’s charity work. We would not be as successful as we are today without our membership in the GBA – because we got involved and made the most of our membership.” While, historically, the GBA has been known as a trade association that focuses on the building, construction and real estate industries, the group has two classifications of membership – building members and associate members. The latter allows other businesses to join. To be a building member you must have an active North Carolina contractor’s license. Anyone else may sign on as an associate member. To raise money for people in need, custom home builder Friddle and Company held a Holiday House on Dec. 17 and Dec. 18. Admission to tour the 4,200-square-foot home at 8868 Cravenwood in Oak Ridge was two cans of food. Thanks to the public, in 12 hours the tour collected 1,270 cans for Second Harvest Food Bank, and, thanks to suppliers, another $2,075. In addition, for every can of food received, up to a set level, Friddle and Company donated $1 to the Oak Ridge Elementary PTA. That total, along with suppliers donations, was $1,224.

GBA (Continued from page 17) become a member of the North Carolina Home Builders Association (NCHBA) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as well. The GBA is responsible for a number of events in the Greensboro and Guilford County area, including the Parade of Homes, the Tour of Remodeled Homes and the Southern Ideal Home Show. Each event offers members an occasion to market their company, product or service to area consumers. They are valuable tools for both builder and associate members. “Some people want to be involved with the home shows,” explained Collins. “Others want to be in front of consumers, that’s important to them. Others use the GBA as a marketing tool and still others use it as a businessto-business resource for client development or customer relations.” In addition to the professional recognition and networking opportunities that the GBA affords members, the association also offers educational programs, seminars and workshops, community involvement and member advantage discounts from national companies such as GM, FedEx and Office Depot. Educational opportunities have always been important to the GBA. The emphasis lately has been on certification in three areas – Lead Renovator Certification, Certified Green Building Professional and Certified Aging in Place Specialist courses. Another valuable educational resource the GBA offers is Economic Housing Forecasts. Done through a partnership with MarketGraphics Research, the forecasts provide updates on our regional housing market activity in comparison to other markets throughout the country. The GBA’s community service efforts focus on assisting area residents with affordable housing needs. The group’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity, called Raising Roofs ...
Builders for Habitat, began in 2003. The every-other-year event has built more than 40 homes to date, with the last 10 achieving a NAHB Green Home certification. Another partnership, with Housing Greensboro called ReBuilding Hope, renovated eight homes in 2011. Housing Greensboro is a local nonprofit agency that serves low-income families. The agency provides repairs and energy efficiency improvements that make the families’ homes warmer, drier and safer. Beyond their efforts to give back to the community, the GBA is also working hard to stay on the cutting edge of new developments, whether that means the latest in building technologies or new marketing opportunities. One way the group is doing this is by looking to the future and changes in the way builders will be constructing and marketing homes. As a result, the GBA has formed the Triad Green Building Council and the GBA Technology Council. The Triad Green Building Council has coordinated the Building GREEN Partners sponsorship program and created a website focused on providing consumers information on sustainable building practices. It also offers a list of green building professionals in the region and a gallery of certified green homes. The Technology Council has introduced a series of informal Technology Roundtables. Aimed at helping members increase their knowledge, efficiency and productivity with today’s technology, the Roundtables have looked at the use of social media, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, to market and promote member businesses. Additionally, the Technology Council has its own Facebook page to serve as a resource for members to post technology-related questions and seek advice from other members. For more information on the GBA, call (336) 855-6255 or visit www. greensborobuilders.org.
