Jack DeJohnette One of the finest jazz drummers of all time, Jack DeJohnette celebrates his 70th birthday in style with a quintet that includes the brilliant reedsman Don Byron plus Martin Sewell, George Colligan and Jerome Harris. In a career that spans over half a century, he’s been the percussionist of choice for a veritable who’s who of jazz giants - Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock - and he himself received a coveted Jazz Masters Award earlier this year. He’s also a hugely respected composer and leader of a series of bands that reflect the acoustic/electric language of contemporary jazz, always sounding as fresh as tomorrow. Carminho Carminho is Portugal’s brightest new star. Her first album, Fado, was a burning statement of intent from a 25-year-old who realised after attending university and travelling the globe that singing the music of her homeland was her calling in life. It went on to be named the best album of 2011 by Songlines. Her new album, Alma (Portuguese for ‘soul’), was released in March of this year and portrays a woman growing in spirit as well as talent; combining traditional fado songs resurrected from the dusty tavernas of old with her own music and new arrangements of the work of Brazilian greats like Fernanda Maria and Vinicius de Moraes, Carminho’s voice glistens with potent, raw tenderness as it soars over quintessential Portuguese and acoustic Spanish guitars.
