The Richard Harris International Film Festival would like to thank Good Evening Now in it’s second year this film festival will celebrate the life and works of Richard Harris. Richard was not only a well-known Limerick and Irish actor but singer, theatrical producer, poet and film director of immense ability and charisma. This film festival is to celebrate his unique talent in the city where he was born and raised. Along with the viewing of ‘The Field’ , the festival will be a showcase for Irish Short film makers and feature filmmakers from the Irish Diaspora. The idea for this festival emerged during a meeting about ‘the gathering’ in Limerick in 2012. The festival was inaugurated to ensure Richard Harris’s enduring legacy was honoured in his native city. The committee felt that an annual film festival that promoted Irish film makers living abroad was the most apposite way to honour Richard. We strongly believe that the Irish film-making Diaspora should be encouraged to showcase their work here in Ireland . We believe this film festival will be part of the International festival calendar for many years to come. Ireland punches above its weight in terms of acting and film-making talent, Michael Fassbender, Colin Farrell, Stephen Rea, Liam Neeson, Saoirse Ronan and Jack Reynor continue to fly the flag for the Irish film industry but it was Richard Harris that paved the way for these stars in Hollywood. Richard Harris was an actor, singer, theatrical producer, writer, poet & film director of immense ability and charisma. His versatility was evident in his varied film roles whether he was playing a Roman Emperor, a wizard, a tenant-farmer or a mutineer. Harris’s career and personality necessitated a peripatetic life but Limerick and the Shannon region remained close to his heart . We hope that this is a festival will continue to showcase Limerick City and its environs to an international audience. On behalf of the organising committee we would like to thank you for your support throughout the year for the Richard Harris International Film Festival. Festival Board.

Limerick Film Archive Mission statement of the Limerick Film Archive

At the opening Gala of the inaugural festival in 2013 Damian Harris, Richard’s eldest son, read out a message from his brothers Jamie and Jared Harris who were unfortunately unable to attend.

Good Evening All, The team approached us about the idea of this festival earlier this year and we were very excited about it right away. Our father fell in love with cinema in the dark movie houses of Limerick and later Kilkee. Although he told people that it wasn’t until he contracted TB, and had to abandon his dreams of playing professional rugby that he discovered theatre and literature, if you ask his brother Noel he will tell you that he had already discovered movies by then. He used to go to the films and then act out the entire story for his friends who hadn’t been able to see it. It seems entirely appropriate then that Limerick should launch a film festival in his honour. It is highly unusual and uniquely challenging to centre a film festival around a person as well as a city. Our hope is that in the coming years that this festival will come to symbolise all that is unique, individual and idiosyncratic about both my father and Limerick, the city that shaped him. It will be contentious, it will be passionate, and it will stand apart because that is both your natures. We are extremely excited about the prospects for creating a new kind of film festival and we greatly look forward to its success. If this is being read out then it means that we have been delayed by our masters here on sets in Toronto and Virginia and have been unable to come. It saddens us more than you can imagine, but we are buoyed by the knowledge that the team is determined that this is just the beginning. God bless you, Jared and Jamie Harris

Synopsis

Synopsis

Eric (Jack O’Connell) is a violent young offender prematurely thrown into the dark world of an adult prison. As he struggles to assert himself against the prison officers and the other inmates, he has to confront his own father, Nev (Ben Mendelsohn); a man who has spent most of his life in jail. As Eric forges allegiances with other prisoners, he learns that his rage can be overcome and discovers the new rules of survival. But there are forces at work which threaten to destroy him.

David Mackenzie—Director David Mackenzie stepped into feature film-making (after several serial-award winning shorts) with his oddball-revenge movie The Last Great Wilderness which had its North American premiere at TIFF in 2002. He followed this with his acclaimed adaptation of Alexander Trocchi’s existentialist classic Young Adam starring Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton which premiered in Cannes 2003, played TIFF and Telluride that year and went on to win 4 Scottish BAFTAS, a European Film Academy and several BIFA nominations and a London Critics Circle award for Best Newcomer. Subsequent films include ASYLUM, starring Natasha Richardson and Ian McKellen, the highly regarded Hallam Foe with Jamie Bell, which won a Silver Bear in Berlin 2007, the Gold Hugo in Chicago, the Golden Swan in Copenhagen, the Golden Hitchcock in Dinard, a Scottish BAFTA and 4 nominations, 8 BIFA nominations, and Spread with Ashton Kutcher and Anne Heche which premiered in Sundance 2009 (and was released internationally as Toy Boy, L.A. Gigolo, S-Lover, Love, Sex & Celebrity, Oh Yeah, American Celebrity and Jogando com Prazer, depending on territory!). Recently, Mackenzie’s work has continued with his futuristic fable Perfect Sense starring Eva Green and Ewan McGregor, which premiered in Sundance in 2011 and won several awards including Best Feature in Edinburgh and several Scottish BAFTA nominations, and the gonzo comedy romance You Instead (aka Tonight You’re Mine) (SXSW ’11) in which two rival pop stars, male and female, find themselves involuntarily ‘united’ at a massive music festival. With Starred Up starring Jack O’Connell, Ben Mendelsohn and Rupert Friend, Mackenzie steps confidently into new territory, making a film within the confines of a genre for the first time. The BFI Statistical Yearbook 2013 notes that Mackenzie is regarded as one of the top five most prolific directors in the UK. His work continues to challenge, inspire and provoke. Jack O'Connell—Actor Jack was born on August 1, 1990 in Derby, England. He is an actor, known for 300; Rise of an Empire (2014), Eden Lake (2008) and Starred Up (2013). He is set to star in the Angelina Jolie directed war-drama Unbroken based on the life of Louis Zamperini. .

It won the best Irish film of the year award at the 10th Irish Film & Television Awards and was screened at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival and was selected to screen at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York in April 2013. Lenny Abrahamson - Director Abrahamson was born in Dublin, began his career directing commercials before directing his first feature film Adam & Paul, a black comedy that featured a pair of heroin addicts as they made their way around Dublin in search of a fix. In 2012 Abrahamson won his third IFTA for best film with What Richard Did Abrahamson directed the film Frank, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2014. The film is about an eccentric musician Frank. It stars Michael Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson and Maggie Gyllenhall.
