The purpose of this brief was to explore the meaning of a grid and then attempt to portray the construction and subsequent destruction of one. I found that grid was used in northern England as surgical slang for face which gave me the idea of using imagery which brings to mind sperm, reproduction and contraception. I also realised that if it wasn’t taken too literally that I could experiment with the phrase ‘to lose face’. This is clearest in the last poster which talks about loss of confidence and bullying.

Making and breaking the grid

Defining the grid

Defining the grid

This brief reminded me heavily of the tasks set during my time at the Isle of Wight College. The brief was to research our designated personality in unorthodox ways and to document our findings. I personally found Barbara Kruger’s tutors to be more interesting then the artist herself. Her stye is very simple and easy to replicated (as shown on the facing page) and seems to feel like it has a short shelf life when used.

Biography of Barbara Kruger

One aspect of this brief that I did find interesting was the removal of images from the ‘Century’ book. Once the images had been separated from their captions it became very easy to alter their meanings and the viewers perceptions. The poster is stylistically similar to the Grindhouse posters. I love their style and the limited colour palette is reminiscent of Barbara Kruger’s restrictive use of Black, White and Red.

BARBARA KRUGER BIOGRAPHY

BARBARA KRUGER BIOGRAPHY

I personally really struggled with this brief. While the idea was simple enough - create a situation which alters the way which people act - I found it difficult to think of an idea which had the slightest amount of originality or credibility.

Persuasion BRIEF

In the end me and Steven decided to put our love of pulling pranks to good use and managed to get access to the main room early in the day to set up the classroom divider and tables to create a fairly irritating maze for the other students to negotiate. The result was 60 to 70 students all following each other through the maze. It also earned us a fair few insults but it was only proof that we had managed to both irritate and control our captive audience.

Persuasion brief

Persuasion brief

Out of all the briefs we where given this semester this was the one which I managed to get my teeth into the most. This is actually quite strange as it took me a long time to decide which news story to focus on and to actually start.

SHOOTING THE STARS

I ended up working with the French pension cuts. This was due to the student fees protest planned a few days later and also the rather comedic idea of OAP’s launching a counter campaign against the younger generation. While I think the ideas are there I am not completely happy with some of the results. I approached it in a few different ways before settling on a stable idea - the first being OAP’s behaving like rave students. Another was centred around sending a small team of remote control OAP buggies down Epsom high street and harassing students with them. This was scrapped quite early on due to budget.

After settling on an idea I found it easiest to start with creating an ‘identity’ for both parties. This manifested itself as a selection of icons and logos for each. These are quite prominent on both of their propaganda items and actually unite them as a single set.

SHOOTING THE STARS

I prefer the OAP’s items as they seem to hold their own as single pieces of work the easiest. The newspaper cover was probably the quickest piece due to my previous job at an Island paper. It was a while ago but the basics are hard to forget. The material gathered at the student march was invaluable. Not only did the photos provide adequate material to work from but the newspapers and leaflets from the various parties also stirred my imagination for this imaginary age revolution.

Shooting the stars

I found this to be the hardest brief of the semester. I struggled to settle on a final idea (which should be obvious by the amount of first steps shown here) and really could have done with the guidance of a critique the week before the brief was due. Of course you cannot help the snow, but the snow definitely didn’t help me.

Narrative Brief

The football piece was simply me experimenting with blending images to create a loose narrative. I think the idea works but the execution could be better. I ended up going with the Ikea style How-To-Make-A-Zine piece with the intention of using it on the Pornography for Cowards website. It was approached with the classic ‘Here’s a chord. Here’s another. Here’s a third. Now form a band’ strip from Sniffin’ Glue in mind. The student march piece was originally intended to be more intricate but in the end I felt that this detracted from the actual narrative. Following a discussion with Mark I decided to focus more heavily on individuals faces and let the viewer create their own narrative.

TELLING A STORY

The Evaluation sheet we where given describes this unit as a ‘visual journey’. With that in mind I can only imagine this semester being a trip up north in a constantly failing Skoda. I got there in the end but it was far from a smooth journey. I think the hardest aspect of this semester was for me to distance from myself to the ‘this work needs a final piece’ mentality. I like having a set goal so having to just develop ideas doesn’t sit easily with me. Because of this I found myself struggling to begin a lot of the briefs which left me seeking guidance from some of my peers who preferred this way or working. While I found it incredibly helpful to see what my peers where creating in response to the given briefs I do feel that this stop-start approach to the briefs has left me with a set of inconsistent work. While a lot of the work is identifiable as mine I do not feel that it fits together as a single set. I managed to get my teeth into the Shooting The Stars brief the easiest due to the student protests happening at the same time. I’ve always been intrigued by social commentary so I appreciated the chance to be a part of this and produce work while the idea is still relevant. I have also pushed myself to get familiar with Illustrator again this semester. While I could use it for basic tasks at the beginning of the year I now feel a lot more confident when using type and grids in it. It has become my primary programme now as opposed to photoshop. I hope that next semester allows me to fall into an easier work routine but failing that I will continue to use the techniques taught during the first year to help produce whatever the brief requires.

INDEPENDENT

practice uNIT egrd 2010 Richard heaven

The majority of my independent practice focuses on two areas – Independent publishing and graphic representation of spoken word. A reoccurring topic in both of these areas is the preference of an individuals opinion over that of a major companies. The majority of this work is Mac based but as usual photography will be used fairly heavily as well. I favour zines when thinking about independent publishing because of their diversity and the multitude of ways that they can be constructed. There are too many zine makers which have either impressed or influenced me to name check but those who introduce foreign objects to their work as well as using interesting binding techniques have always interested me. The beauty of the zine is that due to the low cost of production I can distribute them to anywhere I can physically reach. Whether it’s selling through local stores and the Internet (I am currently doing both) or leaving on the stage at shows, the flexible nature of the zine allows so much more interaction then your standard poster or website. The idea of DIY media has been around since the average man had the power to independently reproduce his own work in reasonably large volumes. For me personally the biggest influences would have to be the cult late 70′s zine ‘Sniffin Glue’, the South London based ‘A Short Fanzine About Rocking’ and 2004′s ‘Rancid News #8′. Rancid News would be the strongest influence as it was the first zine I encountered which featured the Anarchist movement as well as animal liberation and voting. While I am involved with neither of these it was eye opening to see the independent media being used to actually educate others on fringe subjects. Due to the DIY nature of this it is very difficult to find ‘Key Players’ of the scene. It is also difficult to put a country of origin to this as independent publishing has been happening since reproduction techniques began. For the sake of convenience most of my research will be from UK sources but not exclusively.

It didn’t take long for me to get tired redirecting people to various different sites to support Pornography for Cowards. After viewing a few different websites which offer portfolio hosting for free I settled on Carbonmade. Flavour was a contender but I found its messy structuring to be too frustrating. I kept it simple on Carbonmade so each link took the user to the desired page links. It isn’t the prettiest or most advanced site but it serves its purpose.

Pornography for cowards central site

The bottom of the page reads ‘2010 until whenever I damn well please. sXe and proud’. It’s the little bits like this which make me enjoy running these things independently.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Although I toyed with the idea of running Pornography For Cowards as an email distro I soon tired of replying to said emails and decided to set up a Bigcartel store instead. I found that it offered the best combination of custom stylings and product limit while staying free to use. I decided to change the colours and header to reflect the cleaner cover of issue 2 (and all subsequent issues) as the black site was only meant to be a temporary setup.

STOCK AND BIGCARTEL STORE

Originally I only sold Pornography For Cowards on the site but I eventually got hold of a box of Abolition/Hang The Bastard split 7”s. Abolition are part of the London Straight Edge scene so I’m always willing to help them out. ‘Kill Your Own’ is another music zine which runs a website hosting free punk/indie/alternative albums for download which I used extensively so I got in touch and agreed to trade issues for each others distro. ‘Steal Company Paper, Write Poems’ came about by chance after Cam posted an advert for it above me on a Facebook zine group. It’s a Vegan Straight Edge zine from Rhode Island, USA so I agreed to stock a handful over here in the UK.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

One of the best aspects of running Pornography For Cowards completely independently is having access to every little piece of relative information. This includes messages, post codes and site hits.

Distribution info graphics

The infographics on the facing page show the distribution of both issues of PFC around the UK and the response rate to messages sent across various social networking sites. After discussing the graphics with Simon Last I decided to do something linking post codes to the university library’s ordering system. I then took two of the books I found from referencing the numbers in the post codes and removed any word which did not feature any of the letters in the postcode. The last piece is based on this idea but I’ve removed the books which corollate to the postcode number from the shelf. I found the work I’d previously done for the Grid task particularly useful here. While I sometimes struggle to analyse data I found it easier to apply the findings to an infographic after the experience of creating the previous pieces.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Very late into the semester I decided to start work on another zine based on the thoughts of animals post-sex. This came about after a particularly strange conversation with friends and the desire to try a couple of new sketchbooks I’d picked up earlier in the day.

The Secret Thoughts of Animals

While this will be mostly my drawings and thoughts I have had a couple of my peers who also make zines show an interest in contributing to this so I am not ruling the idea of this becoming a collaborative project out. This will more then likely be a single run, standalone zine.

independent practice

Just like the animal zine, the idea of making a batch of stickers came about from drawing in a new set of sketchbooks. Stickers have always been a cheap and easy way to promote a service or product and their size makes them perfect for discretely applying to public services.

Promotional stickers

I was originally a little worried about having to out source the stickers to a printing company but I found that printing directly onto paper and then applying them to sticky labels and covering them with a clear book cover works as well as any professional product. I was pleased by this as it allows me to retain complete control on runs and designs while keeping it DIY. There is a loose style across the designs due to the characters which I’d been drawing. I will probably develop these a little further once this semester is over but three designs will suffice for now.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

In hindsight this semester has allowed me to work on Pornography For Cowards in a more relaxed way then if I wasn’t allowed to focus upon it as independent practice. Whilst the idea of the zine had been growing in my mind since mid-summer 2010 I hadn’t had the time or resources to pursue creating it until the first few weeks of term in September. I would describe issue 1 as an overly excitable teenager. I pulled everything together in matter of days just so I had something to put out there. The passion and ideas was there even if the content or layout was lacking. With that in mind I spent the best part of two to three weeks compiling issue 2. The layout was simpler and more focused and although it had the same number of pages as issue 1, the layout allowed it to include a lot more content then issue 1. Issue 2 also marked a redesign to the online side of PFC which visually unified the whole package. It was around then that I started getting people approaching me instead of simply replying which was a definite confidence boost. I also started stocking other zines and having PFC stocked in other distros which has led for me to start getting involved with the more community based side of the zine scene. The most recent achievement was receiving my first order from America. While it isn’t cost effective the idea that the frontman of one of 2010’s biggest hardcore success stories (Trash Talk) owning a copy of both the zine and Abolition vinyl far outweighs the monetary loss. I have a few ideas that i’d like to implement in the near future. The first and most obvious is to increase the page count. While one of the zines selling points is its CD I would like to get the actual zine to a size which sits more comfortably against its competition. This ties is quite well to the next goal - to establish more regular buyers. If I can count of more people parting with their cash I can take more risks in producing it.

One of these ideas is to package each one in a brown paper bag similar to those used in corner stores or fish and chip stores. This ties into the old fashioned idea of buying pornography under the counter and also allows me to experiment with screen printing and stamp making for branding. To keep with the unified image that has been created for PFC I have decided to keep the pig headed man as a mascot. Each cover will include a shot of him in the hope that it becomes synonymous with the zine. So I feel that the biggest advantage of working on this as independent practice this semester was having the space and time to allow it to breathe and grow. If it was to be ran on the sideline I feel that everything would have been too rushed and the passion would have burnt out early on. I hope to act upon a couple of the ideas I mentioned previously next semester and continue to watch it grow.
