As the NPAs withdrew in disarray after a few minutes of exchanged fires, they were again engaged by the nearby troops from the 79 th IB led by 2Lt. John Tumamao and 2Lt. Christopher Eslava. Those NPAs were believed to be the same group of NPAs that was encountered by the troops on election day. The military had already coordinated with PNP counterparts for complementary checkpoint operations in the nearby barangays to prevent the NPAs from nearing the civilian populace and used them as human shields. Capt. Cresencio Gargar, CMO Officer of the 302nd Brigade together with officials in the affected barangays conducted a meeting and dialogue Thursday with the evacuees in two evacuation centers to

assist their needs. Provincial Social Welfare Officer Alice Lagarde and DSWD personnel from Sta. Catalina distributed foods such as rice, sardines, water and other relief items to the evacuees in the two evacuation sites. The pursuit of the rebels last week was part of the military’s internal security operations as well as to complement civilian efforts for peaceful and orderly elections, according to Brigade Cmdr. Col. Francisco Patrimonio. Fr. Mark Vilos of the San Francisco, Sta. Catalina parish said an undetermined number of voters were reportedly unable to cast their ballots after learning of the firefight in Milagrosa Monday morning. The voters rushed out of the voting center in San Francisco and rode in “habalhabal” motorcycles to the mountains to secure their families amidst fear of being hit by stray bullets, the priest said. P406K robbery ... From page 1 flagged down the Toyota Hilux pickup of the PDEP mining and declared a hold up at the isolated sitio of Bantog, barangay Lag-it in Tayasan, some 75 kilometers north of Dumaguete City. Some P400,000 representing the wages of the mining firm’s employees for Mid-May payroll, were carted away by the suspects who fled going westward. Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office provl commandr Sr. Supt Noli Roman and 302 nd brigade commander Col Francisco Patrimonio told a press conference the incident was not electionrelated. But he admitted the robbery was planned on election eve when people are busy for their poll duties. Romana is not discounting the possibility the hold up was the handiwork of bandits in the area, considering that last Saturday’s incident was the second and that the suspects could have studied the pattern in withdrawing large sums of money for the salaries of its employees which is undertaken every month. Romana said the company has blue guards but not that armed. Meanwhile, an amount of P6,000 was reportedly stolen by unidentified

suspect who managed to get inside the Robinsons Mall in Calindagan and destroyed the tarpaulin stand of Sparkles kiosk located at the ground floor of the said mall. Realyn Loriano, 28, single and sales clerk of Sparkles told the police that at about 9:30 am when she was about to open their store she noticed that the tarpaulin which used to cover their kiosk was already disarranged. Upon checking, the money placed on the cash box which was supposed to be deposited in the bank was already gone. The crime was believed to have occurred between Wednesday evening, after the closing of Robinsons store or early Thursday morning before the mall opened. Loriano said she immediately reported the incident to the management of Robinsons to check the CCTV cameras for the possible identification of the suspect. But the mall refused to grant her request as she was asked to write first a letter of request addressed to their main office in Manila before they would allow her to see the CCTV camera. The theft and robbery section of the Dumaguete City Police have yet to determine if the crime was an inside job or not. (Boy J. Pilongo)
