A.T. Gant Scholarship
Celebrating 35 Years of Educational Excellence
SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 2018 SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH DORSEYVILLE, LOUISIANA
Miss Alfretta Thelma Gant, a Dorseyville native, was born October 27, 1909, to Sarah Ray Gant and Herman Lewis Gant. Miss Gant was a member of St. John the Baptist Church and a teacher at the Dorseyville School for Colored Students (also known as the Old Dorseyville School) which was built by our founder Reverend Bazile Dorsey. Miss Gant was a pioneer in the Iberville Parish Education Community and was instrumental in the fight for equality for Black students in the parish. She served as a dedicated teacher and principal for fortytwo years and was always available to assist in whatever was needed to support the children of Dorseyville, surrounding communities, and St. John the Baptist Church. Miss Gant was a trailblazer in education and stood firm in her belief that education was essential to our success. Her work inspired many of our retired educators to follow her into the noble profession. Two of her former students, Sis. Ruby Pierre and the late Mr. Ernest Westley started the A.T. Gant Scholarship Fund in 1983. Mr. Westley presented the first award of $1,000 to the scholarship fund. Today, we remember Miss Alfretta T. Gant and honor her legacy through the presentation of scholarship awards to deserving high school graduates to encourage them to continue their education.
