December 2020 Trestleboard From the East – Revitalize At the beginning of 2020, not one of us could have seen the path that lay ahead. The year started out strong with a yearlong education plan laid out in January and a great Valentines Luncheon in February. Then, in March – COVID-19 changed everything. From cancelled degrees to ZOOM Stated meetings – we had to adapt Freemasonry in ways we’ve never done before. Grand Communication and the Officers Retreat were cancelled. We held Virtual game nights and remote calling committees for reaching out to brothers. Without much notice, we had to reinvent ourselves and determine how to not only survive but thrive in a newly remote and digital world. Despite these challenges, we began new traditions like the use of a Chamber of Reflection, Journals & a Seeker Dinner. Even our Bonus Swap Building projects were delayed, but are now finally underway. We’ve repaired our foundation cracks, improve electric and HVAC on the roof and a new roof is in the process of being installed. When all is completed – we will be well on our way to revitalizing our building for it’s 100 year anniversary in 2025. As we step into 2021, I want to challenge each of you to embrace the steps we’ve taken to adapt to a changing world while still celebrating our Masonic traditions. I want you to take pride in the work we are doing to revitalize our Masonic Temple. But most importantly, I want to you to reflect internally about how these exciting changes not only reflect our physical world – but how they reflect our internal struggle to continually improve ourselves in an ever changing world while staying true to our spiritual and moral commitment to our brothers, our communities and ourselves. Urram. Urram. Urram. Fraternally yours, Bo Buchanan Master, Arizona Lodge No. 2 Under the Jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Arizona

From the West - Masonic Accountability Hail Brothers, from the west gate of the temple, I come to discuss Masonic Accountability. We as Masons have education that is discussed in our degrees that guides us on the rectitude of our conduct. It is when we step outside of the education that the consequences of our actions need to be squared. How do we hold ourselves accountable, within our principles? How are gentle reformations afforded to those that step outside the bounds? What sanctions are appropriate? All these answers lye within the lodge. The counsel of the brethren, the commitment to one another to always be there for each other, to never give up on each other, no matter what ( M & T accepted). No man is perfect, nor should he try to be. All men should endeavor to hold themselves accountable for their own actions, as well as, all masons should try to improve in the love for his brother, relief of his brother from destitute conditions, and truth between he and his brethren. It is not the mistake that makes a man, it is the action after. Humbleness, humility, and forgiveness are at the core of our teachings. So is accountability. We need to be accountable to ourselves first. We must be accountable to our teachings, to our families, and to each other. We need to pick one another up. As 2021 comes in, so too will a year of Masonic teaching, love, and accountability. Semper Fidelis !! Fraternally yours, Matthew Harris, Senior Warden Arizona Lodge No. 2

End of Year Awards Congratulations to our Mason of the year, Brother Anthony Miller! Anthony is known by his friends and family as a man who is always willing to lend a helping hand – and he carries the world on his shoulders! In Greek mythology, Titan was responsible for carrying the weight of heaven on his shoulders. He was also know as a wise man and the founder of astronomy. What better symbol of Masonic Strength than a statue of Atlas as his Mason of the year Award!

Past Master Keith Deane is a man who is always ready to answer the call when a brother is in need. He also lends his expertise and support to this building for all our HVAC and systems needs. His calm demeanor raises the standard of masonic behavior by setting a supreme example. That’s why he’s the Mason of the Decade! Masonic Education Offered in 2020 – and upcoming in 2021 Our Education Series in 2020 was a huge success. At each stated meeting we presented a piece of education for our “Masonic Toolbox” aimed at helping us to become better men. And on fourth Tuesdays we presenteda wide variety of topics for our “Quarry of the Mind” series. In 2021, we will continue Stated Meeting & Fourth Tuesday Education events. Please watch our Calendar, Facebook page and the Trestleboard for updates on dates and topics.

Presented by Brother Vic Olson At the October “Quarry of the Mind” education night, brother Vic Olson turned the tables and invited us into his world as an Architect. In presenting “Layering as a Masonic Tool”, brother Vic used the idea of layouts in the world of architecture as a tool we might want to consider when managing our lives. “The Purpose of this idea is to elaborate on a tool to use in our masonic lives by which we can better be enabled to live the masonic charges of each degree.” Bro. Vic Olson Some specific examples of those charges might be: Keep and conceal trusted agreements, Support and assist our brothers, Improve ourselves, Aid and Assist in the growth of others, to be True, Faithful and Trustworthy as both Men and Masons. Brother Vic used examples of layers such as layers of a blueprint or layers of the earth to show us how separating the different layers for individual examination might help us identify problems easier by. For example, in blueprints – one might have layers for electric, plumbing, structure, gas, lighting and furniture. Similarly, in our lives – we might look at layers of our personal life, our business life, our spiritual life and even the afterlife. Inside each of those layers, such as work, we might have education/training, compensation, friendships, mentorships, client interactions and work satisfaction. When examining a blueprint, you would separate each of these layers first to determine what is needed and then, when combining them all together – you then examine any areas of conflict. Similarly, in our masonic lives -separating layers helps examination. In closing, “Layering is just another tool to navigate the complexities of systems and consider them with regard to their apparent relationship to other systems. It’s not a sledgehammer to demolish but it is a tool to construct the interrelationships of the reality of so many things – including our lives”. Bro. Vic Olson

Pioneer Cemetery holds an important place in the hearts of Arizona Freemasons. Early founders of the state of Arizona as well as Freemasonry in Arizona are buried there. That is why this year, in addition to being a member of the Pioneers’ Cemetery Association, we decided to donate $1.00 for every member of Arizona Lodge No. 2 - $340. If you would like to support this important Arizona historical site, please visit the Pioneers’ Cemetery Association website below:

From the Grand East

Brothers Being Brothers An excerpt from the Grandmasters presentation at the Western States Conference in Feb 2020 and his theme for the current Masonic year “Your community and the Craft – What is the impression of your lodge in the community? The biggest question is do they even know you exist? How are you going to attract worthy men to join the fraternity if no one knows who we are or what we do other than the latest conspiracy theory? This is something that your individual lodges are going to have to figure out. Each community is different so the answers will all be different as well. In Arizona, almost everyone participates in the “Bikes for Books” program, but in my experience there is not a lot of community interaction on this, just the schools…..Just figure something out that you enjoy doing and get out there in the community to let them know we are still around and still relevant.”

Our New Lodge Pin Brothers, it’s been a long year as we’ve battled with lock ins, shutdowns, masks and social distancing. We have taken precautions and come up with a set of guidelines to keep everyone safe when attending lodge events. As a result, we are beginning to hold meetings and degrees in person. If you feel comfortable attending, now would be a great time to come out and pick up your new lodge pin – seen to the right. We hope to see you soon! ……Worshipful Master Bo Buchanan
