SPRING CLEANING Blossoms are blooming, birds are chirping, and the sun is shining-right through your dirty windows. That’s when it hits you. Spring is in the air and it’s time to freshen up your home. There’s nothing like getting rid of old or unused items to give you and your home a new lease on life, says Kathleen Boland, Vancouver franchise owner, Everything Organized. And if you’re selling, a clean, clutter-free home will get better offers. DE-CLUTTER: “Our spaces are supposed to showcase the items we love, which in turn make us feel good,” Boland says. “We outgrow clothing and music. We must look at our spaces to selectively get rid of items we have outgrown as well.” Envision how you would like your space to look. The more you create space, the more relaxing and inviting your home is.

If you’re afraid to embrace decluttering, start small and this will get you used to the idea and create momentum. Or invite a friend to help you. Often, a new set of eyes can see what we don’t. Many of us hoard magazines, books and newspapers. Recycle those old newspapers. Then, purge those magazines and books by giving them to a hospital or other charitable organization. Just remove any address labels before you send them off. In addition, Boland suggests you go digital for those paper clipping collections that inspire you to decorate, get healthy or try a new recipe. GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED: When helping your family get organized, give them each a goal, such as letting go of one bag of clothing each, or filling a box with toys that could be donated to those in need. Attach a positive emotion

to letting things go so that clutter becomes kindness. For children’s rooms, you need to make allies of your kids. She suggests that you don’t remove anything that they don’t want to part with. Rather, give them control and make it fun. ONE THING AT A TIME: “To get started, take it easy and organize one space at a time such as a kitchen cupboard, a front hall closet or that miscellaneous drawer that lurks in every home,” says Boland. “To keep clutter under control, purge and then splurge on the right organizing tool for each space.” The three bin system: One bin for garbage, one for recycling and another for charity. Systematically go through room to room. Pull everything out of drawers, cupboards and countertops and sort it into three

piles. With clothing, a good rule of thumb is, if you haven’t worn it for six months or for a season, get rid of it. “Also, call your favourite charities and schedule them to pick up your gently-used items,” Boland says. “If you arrange it ahead of time, you are more likely to stick with your plan.” In the end, she adds, be realistic with your goals. If you only have a few hours, don’t tackle a longer job such as the kitchen. By setting reasonable goals, you are more apt to stay on track and get the task done — decluttering your home doesn’t have to be a daunting job if you give yourself a month to do it.
