MOVING IN TOGETHER How survive the transition from singlehood to cohabitation FOLLOW WITH

After a decade of dating, boomers Dave and Thalia Harvey married last year. But not before the everyday issues of living together nearly tore them apart. “I had moved into Dave’s house a few years ago and I never felt like it was my house… we ended up breaking up.” This time, “we agreed that neither of us wanted to move into each other’s homes, so we bought a home together,” says Thalia. Moving in together can be fraught with problems if you don’t compromise, says registered clinical counselor Melinda Freitas. She sees many clients dealing with the same issues as the Harveys. “Older couples come to the table with lots

of material goods, things that are a source of pride and achievement, but one partner might see their things far differently,” says Freitas. It’s much easier for young couples, she says. Jeff Hopkins and Leah Perry, a professional couple in their late twenties, say their biggest issue was learning to live with each other’s idiosyncrasies. “For me it was the television remote,” says Hopkins. “We have absolutely no common taste in TV or movies.” “As to how to decorate, even though we sometimes had different ideas we decided together,” adds Perry. With finances, they each kept separate accounts but opened a joint credit card and chequing and savings accounts for common expenses and savings. Living under the same roof can be a wonderful experience - just don’t jump into it

without having some serious discussions first. 1) Honesty: Be completely honest about your expectations, feelings, concerns and dreams for the future. Communicating your needs and wants is crucial, otherwise resentment will build up. Freitas says couples have to be able to be vulnerable, honest and open to each other’s feelings and opinions. 2) Finances: Before moving in, discuss how you will split household expenses, whose name is on the lease and how you will manage your banking. Merging expenses needs a serious discussion to eliminate possible conflict down the road. 3) Sacrificing independence: This is hard for many who have lived on their own. It’s important, and even healthy, to designate areas in the home where each of you can go for personal time and space. Remember, too, that you aren’t giving up your individuality; you’re sharing your life with the one

you love. Show respect by keeping each other informed of your plans and whereabouts. 4) Housework: Figuring out who does what chores will save a lot of stress. Hopkins and Perry decided that when one cooks, the other cleans up. All other chores were divided equally. 5) Whose furniture do you keep: Set aside time to go through each other’s possessions and discuss the “must-haves” and the “negotiables.” “Dave and I used to have a lot of photos of our children on our walls, so we compromised. Dave’s photos are in his office and mine are in my office,” says Thalia Harvey. “Both of us have learned to respect each other’s space and independence,” says Leah Perry. Thalia Harvey agrees, and adds, “If you love them, you’ll accept that compromise is something you do nearly on a daily basis, and it is the key to happy life together.”
