he technical definition of a photograph is: An image, especially a positive print, recorded by a camera. Sounds simple enough. Obviously the definition falls very short of what a photograph actually is. After reviewing the hundreds of photographs we received for this annual photo issue, we were astounded once again at the range of emotions and the breathtaking vistas that can be captured by the camera. Of course, it matters who’s operating the camera, and we could not be more thankful to the talented photographers who contributed to this “exhibition” of Guatemalan art. Many are represented throughout these pages, from the true professionals to the weekend enthusiasts. Unfortunately, we could not fit them all in, and some will appear in future issues. Some of these photographs are thoughtprovoking, some are artful, some depict the grandeur of mother nature, some are poignant and some—like the one below of our dog—are simply amusing. We hope you enjoy these images, and we wish you all the best in this new year. —John & Terry Kovick Biskovich

XI Paiz International Festival to start in February ‘For the Love of Art & Education’ www.fundacionpaiz.org.gt

2

011 may turn out to be the year for culture in Guatemala. The 11th biennial Paiz International Festival includes an unprecedented inaugural concert with Central American superstars, Grammy nominees performing with a beloved student orchestra, a major retrospective of an artistic giant and a fun, popular dance in La Antigua’s own Parque Central.   The 2011 festival promises not only an exciting lineup of Guatemalan and international artists, but also a dramatic expansion of the festival itself. Antiguenos and tourists will enjoy an amazing season of events beginning in February and continuing through December. The festival opens Feb. 11 with impressive concerts. Reuniting after a 10-year absence, the legendary Central American groups Alux Nahual and Éditus will kick off a colorful season filled with art, music and dance.

The next day brings the opening of a retrospective of artist Carlos Mérida at Casa Santo Domingo in the Galería Carlos Mérida. Saturday evening, Ermita de Santa Cruz will be rocked by power pianist Jorge Gomez and his Grammynominated Cuban timba group, Tiempo Libre, accompanied by La Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil. The artists not only perform but will also lead workshops, discussions and classes for Guatemalan students and artists. The Fundación Paiz has focused this festival on its essential objective: to harness the transformative power of art and culture for a better Guatemala. —

Attitude There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. ‘Well,’ she said, ‘I think I’ll braid my hair today.’ So she did and she had a wonderful day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. ‘H-M-M,’ she said, ‘I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.’ So she did and she had a grand day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. ‘Well,’ she said, ‘today I’m going to wear my hair in a pony tail.’ So she did and she had a fun, fun day. The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. ‘YEA!’ she exclaimed, ‘I don’t have to fix my hair today!’ ... Attitude is everything.
