Hola. Soy la cigüeña Basilisa.

Vivo desde hace muchos años en un pueblo que se llama El Campillo.

En realidad mi familia lleva viviendo aquí… bueno exactamente aquí no, mis antepasados vivían en otro pueblo cercano, aunque se mudaron… ¡Pero vaya lío me estoy haciendo!… Voy a empezar por el principio. ¿Has oído alguna vez hablar de San Pedro de la Nave? Si no es así, este libro te va a gustar mucho. Cuenta una historia en la que las piedras emigran, igual que hacemos las cigüeñas cada invierno buscando el calor.

San Pedro de la Nave es un templo muy antiguo de origen visigodo que tiene un montón de tesoros artísticos como esculturas, estelas e inscripciones. Hasta hay un calendario de piedra que funciona con el movimiento del sol.

La iglesia se construyó en el siglo viii en un pueblo que se llamaba también San Pedro de la Nave, a la vera del río Esla. Cuentan que allí había una nave o barcaza que transportaba personas y animales, de una orilla a otra.

Con el paso del tiempo el templo fue cambiando. Sin embargo las esculturas visigodas que había dentro siguieron siempre igual, con escenas de aves fantásticas, leones, monstruos y bestias salvajes. Como eran tan importantes, en el año 1912 la iglesia fue declarada Monumento Nacional.

Poco más tarde, en 1930, pasó algo increíble: en el valle donde estaba

la iglesia iban a construir un embalse (el embalse de Ricobayo) y entonces desmontaron piedra a piedra la iglesia para evitar que quedara sumergida. Cuando terminaron se la llevaron en carros y camiones hasta un pueblo cercano, El Campillo, y ¡la volvieron a construir!

Os parecerá algo sencillo, pero los arquitectos y los historiadores le dieron mil vueltas hasta decidir cómo hacerlo. Al volver a ponerla en pie modificaron algunas cosas pero desde ese momento hasta hoy, casi no ha cambiado nada. Lo que sí ha variado ha sido el entorno de la iglesia, porque en los últimos años unas cuantas construcciones y estructuras sin orden fueron ocupando todo el espacio. ¡Con lo bonita que era la iglesia y el paisaje a su alrededor!

Menos mal que hace muy poco tiempo han venido a arreglarlo y la iglesia ha vuelto a recuperar toda su belleza. Ahora a los turistas les encanta la visita y, además, hay un pequeño museo donde pueden ver algunas estelas de piedra y conocer toda su historia.

La iglesia de San Pedro de la Nave es tan importante que vienen a conocerla desde muchos lugares del mundo, por eso allí se pueden escuchar muchas lenguas diferentes.

Hello. I am Basilisa, the stork.

I have lived many years in a village called El Campillo. Actually, all my family has lived here‌well not exactly here, my ancestors lived in another village nearby, but they moved. This sounds really confusing.

Let me start from the beginning.

Have you ever heard of San Pedro de la Nave? If you haven´t then you are really going to like this book. It is the story about stones that migrate, just like we the storks do every winter in search of warmer weather.

San Pedro de la Nave is a very old church from the Visigoth period and it has a lot of artistic treasures such as sculptures, steles and inscriptions.

There is even a calendar made of stone that works with the movement of the sun.

The church was built in the eighth century in a village named San Pedro de la Nave, just like the church. They say that it was named this way because of the Esla River which is located close to the church. There was a ship or barge that transported people and animals from one side of the river to the other.

Over time, the church changed. However, the Visigoth sculptures inside, with scenes of fantastic birds, lions, monsters and wild beasts, stayed the same. And since they were so important, the church was declared a National Monument in 1912.

A few years later, in 1930, something incredible happened. A reservoir

(the Ricobayo Reservoir) was going to be built in the valley where the church was located so they dismantled the church stone by stone to keep it from being flooded. Once the church was disassembled, carts and lorries took the stones to a nearby village called El Campillo and it was rebuilt!

This might sound easy but, architects and historians thought long and hard about how to do it right. They changed a few things when they started to rebuild it but from that point on it hasn´t changed since. What did change was the church´s surroundings because over the years many different buildings and structures started taking over the village. Oh, how beautiful the church used to be when it was surrounded by a stunning landscape!

Luckily, recently, the church was repaired and it regained all its splendour. Now tourists can enjoy visiting the church and a small museum where they can see some stone steles and learn more about its history.

The church of San Pedro de la Nave is so important that people from all over the world come to visit and that is why you can hear so many different languages.

Al principio solo había montañas, bosques, un río, osos y un poblado en lo alto de una colina.

In the beginning, there were only mountains, woods, a river, bears and a small village on the top of a hill.

Muchos aĂąos despuĂŠs llegaron unos monjes en una barca y empezaron a construir la iglesia.

Many years later, some monks arrived in a boat and they started to build the church.

No tardaron mucho en terminar la iglesia. En un árbol cercano, mi familia construyó un nido, y poco a poco vimos cómo el pueblo seguía creciendo.

The church was finished in a short time and the village continued to grow. In a tree nearby, my family built a nest.

Mil años después el nido todavía seguía en lo alto del viejo árbol.

El pueblo y la iglesia permanecían en su sitio, aunque habían cambiado mucho.

The nest was still there in that old tree a thousand years later.

The village and the church were still there too even though they had changed a bit.

Un invierno, al volver de uno de nuestros viajes, vimos cómo todo se transformaba: ¡estaban desmontando la iglesia y se la llevaban piedra a piedra en carros y camiones! ¿Por qué se la llevaban? ¿Qué estaba pasando?

One winter, after coming back from one of our trips, we saw that everything was changing. They were taking the church down and carrying it away in carts and lorries!

Why were they taking it away? What was happening?

Cuando regresamos un año después apenas reconocimos casi nada. ¡No quedaba ni rastro de la iglesia que tanto queríamos!

El río era ahora un enorme embalse que se tragaba poco a poco las casas abandonadas del pueblo.

When we returned a year later, we hardly recognized anything.

There was no trace of the church!

The river was now an enormous reservoir that was little by little swallowing up all the houses of the abandoned village.

Todo desapareciĂł.

La antigua barca que cruzaba el rĂ­o navegaba ahora sola, a la deriva.

Everything disappeared.

The old barge that crossed the river was now drifting away by itself.

Buscamos y buscamos sin parar hasta que, en un pueblo cercano, encontramos amontonadas las viejas piedras de la iglesia. ยกLa estaban reconstruyendo!

We looked high and low until we found the old stones in a pile in a nearby village.

They were rebuilding the church!

El nuevo pueblo se llamaba El Campillo.

El paisaje era un poco diferente pero encontramos un ĂĄrbol estupendo para construir allĂ­ nuestro nuevo nido.

The new village was called El Campillo.

The landscape was a little different but we found a great tree to build our new nest.

Desde nuestro nuevo nido volvĂ­amos a ver la iglesia y nos encantaba el nuevo paisaje.

From our new nest we could see the church again and we loved the landscape.

Pasaron varios años y el pueblo se llenó de turistas..., pero también de coches, cables, escombros y varias construcciones. ¡Con lo bien que estaba antes!

Many years passed by and the village became packed with tourists and also with cars, cables, rubble, and several buildings.

It was so much more beautiful before!

Pero este año, al regresar del sur nos hemos llevado una sorpresa: ¡han arreglado la iglesia y el paisaje está mucho más bonito! ¡hasta han construido un pequeño museo!

Ahora todo me gusta más. ¡Qué bien volver a casa!

This year, after returning from the South, we had a wonderful surprise: They fixed the church and the landscape is more beautiful. They even built a museum.

I like everything much more. It´s so nice to come back home!

En este libro, Basilisa, una simpática cigüeña, nos cuenta cómo ella y sus antepasados, con la perspectiva que les da su peregrinaje anual, han sido testigos privilegiados de la historia de San Pedro de la Nave.

La iglesia, edificada por unos monjes benedictinos, fue declarada Monumento Nacional en 1912. La construcción del embalse de Ricobayo por Saltos del Duero obligó a su traslado, piedra a piedra, hasta el cercano pueblo de El Campillo, obra dirigida por el historiador Manuel Gómez Moreno y el arquitecto Alejandro Ferrant Vázquez entre 1930 y 1932.

Durante los años 2013 y 2014 el Plan Románico Atlántico actúa en la iglesia de San Pedro de la Nave. La intervención, que surge en el seno de un plan de actuación territorial con colaboración público privada, atiende de modo integral a las necesidades del templo, al tiempo que otorga protagonismo a la futura gestión del inmueble y propicia su conservación mediante el uso de las más modernas tecnologías.
