Editorial

i desde la aparición del cine podemos decir que el sentido de las influencias era desde la literatura, incluida la infantil y juvenil, hacia el nuevo arte de las imágenes, en los últimos años del siglo pasado y en los que van de este, bien puede decirse que las influencias se han producido en un doble sentido; siendo este segundo fundamentalmente desde el género del álbum ilustrado, quizá uno de los territorios de mayor experimentación estética de los últimos tiempos.

Libros ilustrados como El expreso polar, de Chris van Allsburg, o, muy recientemente Donde viven los monstruos, de Maurice Sendak, se han convertido en pretexto e inspiración de grandes producciones cinematográficas, no siempre fieles a la obra que las motivó.

El presente número de Bloc pretende acercarse a estas influencias recíprocas y analizarlas, desde los puntos de vista de creadores de ambos géne-

ros y también escuchar la palabra de aquellos otros, como es el caso de Miguelanxo Prado, que han dado el salto de uno a otro.

Quizá por ello, a estas alturas, bien podamos hablar de un cierto mestizaje de los géneros que comentamos, de igual modo que en la historieta, que siempre participó de la sintaxis de ambos, aunque solo fuese a la hora de construir la suya propia. Fronteras las existentes entre estos lenguajes que en cierta medida se han desdibujado para enriquecimiento de cada uno de los códigos.

f we can say that since the appearance of films the direction of the stream of influences has been from literature, including children’s literature, towards the new art of images, in the final years of the last century and the first years of this one, it could well be said that the influences have flowed in a double channel, the second one being from the picture book, perhaps one of the areas of the greatest experimentation in recent years. Illustrated books such as The Polar Express by Chris van Allsburg , or very recently, Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak, have become a pretext and inspiration for great cinematic productions, not always faithful to the works which inspired them. This issue of Bloc tries to approach these reciprocal influences and analyse them from the point of view of

practitioners from both fields and to listen to what those others, who have made the jump from one field to another, such as Miguelanxo Prado, have to say.

Perhaps for this reason, at this juncture, we could well speak of a certain cross-fertilisation between the genres which we are commenting on, as is the case with the comic which always took part in the syntax of both although it was only at the moment of constructing its own syntax. The existing boundaries between these languages have been blurred to a certain extent to the enrichment of each one of them.

Sus pequeños ojos, parapetados tras unas gafas que resbalan por una nariz roma, nos miran con una intensidad nada frecuente, como si nos estuviera interrogando —al tiempo que plácida y espontáneamente habla de su obra—, sobre si comprendemos las ideas que va desgranando sobre su minucioso trabajo, pero no sólo, como si al tiempo, estuviera especulando sobre cuál es nuestra reflexión sobre sus palabras.

Una mirada, que al observarla, se entiende que capte el mundo que sus libros muestran.

His small eyes sheltered behind glasses which slide on his Roman nose, look at us with a rare intensity as if they were interrogating us — at the same time he speaks placidly and spontaneously about his work — about if we understand the ideas which he is coming out with about his detailed work, but not only this but as if simultaneously he was speculating on our thoughts about what he is saying.

A look, which on observing us, gives us to understand that it captures the world that his books display.

En otros casos, existe una especie de “retorno”, en el sentido de que algunos libros, algunas historias que he ilustrado conllevan una opción para una futura película. De modo que hay un intercambio de ideas, muy reciente, al menos en lo que a mí respecta. Otra cuestión es

que dos páginas de un libro, incluso solo una, constituyen una superficie blanca en la que hay un texto, una serie de signos negros sin ningún valor gráfico. La fantasía se despierta recorriendo el texto, se inventan imágenes, por lo que las dos dimensiones se pierden inmediatamente. En la ilustración, la página es plana, las imágenes son estáticas, no emocionan del mismo modo que un texto, no se logra describir

Sometimes, the relationship could even be defined as productive, that is to say, I can design a book which is neither inspired by the cinema nor is sourced from it, although naturally, the point of view is identical. In other cases there is a sort of “return” in the sense that some books, some stories which I have illustrated include a possibility of a future film. So there is a very recent exchange of ideas, at least as far as I am concerned.

Another question is that two pages of

¡Hay más de una referencia! En efecto, después de Rosa Blanca, que tiene un lazo rojo, me han sugerido, y me parece normal ver las cosas de este modo, que probablemente Spielberg lo ha convertido en un abriguito. Ese color rojo es una flor, un símbolo de vida y el abriguito es conmovedor. Es algo posterior, pero no significa que se haya copiado. El rosa, que constituye una nota de color en una imagen en blanco y negro, procede de mi memoria. Yo vi a un niño envuelto en una mantita rosa hace mucho tiempo, lo llevaba en brazos una pareja que huía, creo que hacia Bremen, no me acuerdo bien... Pero el bulto rosa lo recordé cuando leí el texto de Erika, en el momento en el que tiraban a la niña del tren, así que me parecía importante que hubiera una mantita rosa.

There’s more than one reference! As a matter of fact, after Rose Blanche, who has a red bow, it has been suggested, and it seems perfectly normal to interpret things this way, that Spielberg probably changed it into a little coat.

That red colour is a flower, a symbol of life and the little coat is moving.

It came afterwards but that doesn’t mean that it was copied. The rose, which constitutes a splash of colour in an otherwise black and white image, comes from my memory. I saw a child wrapped up in a pink blanket a long time ago; it was carried by a couple who were

Yo creo que todo esto es bastante casual.

Al ser la película en blanco y negro, lo que no es natural, me ha parecido una manera más dramática de narrar, pero también más estética, de modo que las notas de color se ven inmediatamente.

Puede ser que yo haya usado el blanco y negro pensando en una película para hacer que la historia fuera más gris, más triste, más dramática; es verdad que todo esto es un influjo del cine pero no solo de Spielberg.

Perhaps it was Spielberg who wanted to pay homage to the Rose Blanche who went into forbidden territory with her red bow in her hair…

I think that all this is fairly coincidental.

As the film is in black and white, which is not natural, it seemed to me a more dramatic but also more aesthetic way to tell the story such that the splashes of colour are immediately visible. It could be that I used black and white thinking of a film in order to make the story greyer, sadder, more dramatic; it’s true that this was influenced by film, but not just by Spielberg.

you in your work?

I like some directors; more than anyone I like Kubrick for his ability to change register. Kubrick doesn’t twist the original story of the film into his own style but he uses the concept of the story to invent a direction which becomes an instrument for making the film. He was a great director. I wish I could do the same: change the style of the illustrations for every book. Although I do try.

Your style is recognizable but it also changes. For example there is the case of The Last Resort, a book which is a little rarity in your oeuvre, if you would allow us to describe it like that. The planning, like a comic, the drawing, the colour, not to mention the characters who live in the little Finisterre hotel: is this a gallery of your literary references or is it Patrick Lewis’s?

había concebido el libro, que es mío, así como el relato. Durante un año me entretuve trabajando en él. Lewis no sabía exactamente qué podía hacer. Reconozco que le estoy muy agradecido porque consiguió escribir sobre algo que le quitaba libertad, que no le permitía inventarse nada, solo podía jugar con una estructura

que ya existía. A mí me pareció algo muy duro, sobre todo porque yo tengo todavía miedo de escribir. Mucha gente me anima a que escriba yo los textos pero no me atrevo. Soy un ilustrador, dibujo desde siempre pero no consigo sentirme escritor porque nunca he escrito.

Pero en el caso de Rosa Blanca, la idea del libro es suya…

En ese caso, la idea era mía pero el texto francés lo escribió Christophe Gallaz; Ian McEwan, que entonces no era tan famoso, hizo la versión en inglés. La versión italiana no me gustó así que la reescribí yo. Llegué a la conclusión de que estaba harto de malas traducciones.

Volvamos a la relación entre cine e ilustración, en 1905: Bagliori a Oriente hay una referencia evidente al El acorazado Potemkin, de Eisenstein. ¿Se trata de una referencia explícita

That book turned out to be a very strange experience. Patrick Lewis wrote to me complaining that he felt forced to write a story after the book, which is mine, as is the story, had already been conceived.

I had a great time working on it for a year. Lewis didn’t know exactly what he

En el caso concreto, puesto que el libro hablaba del episodio del acorazado Potemkin, está claro que no podía inventarlo de modo totalmente distinto, así que me pareció normal acudir a esas imágenes. 1905: Bagliori a Oriente era mi primer libro italiano, lo que me daba cierta libertad, y decidí renunciar a la perspectiva. El dibujo es muy feo, achatado todo en un plano. Es el color el que da la sensación de realidad a la imagen, como si se viera desde muy lejos.

Buscaba un efecto más bien intenso y, de hecho, esa peculiaridad ha sido reconocida como un elemento de mi estilo, pero al mismo tiempo el propio estilo es una prisión, ¿no?, de modo que quise hacer los cañones del acorazado con una

perspectiva exasperada. ¿Por qué?

Pretendía que quedara claro que estaba contando una historia que quizá nunca había existido, que los hechos narrados eran inventados, que en realidad no sucedía nada. Es decir, afirmo que se trata de un relato, que nada es verdad.

Es una fórmula. Yo creo que un ilustrador tiene que tener idea de las cosas antes de hacer una película, huy, qué lapsus, quería decir, antes de hacer un libro.

Es evidente que afronto un libro como si tuviera que dirigir una película: primero hay que tener una idea, un modo narrativo. En La historia de Erika, de hecho, intenté dibujar las caras de los personajes pero me parecía que estaba robando

Let’s go back to the relationship between film and illustration. In 1905: Bagliori a Oriente there’s an obvious reference to Eisenstein’s The Battleship Potemkin. Is this an explicit reference or are they images which belong to a collective imagination which we cannot do without?

Yes, of course there are images which belong to a shared collective imagination.

In this particular case, as the book spoke of the episode of the battleship Potemkin, it’s clear that I couldn’t invent it in a completely different way, so it was natural for me to use those images. 1905: Bagliori a Oriente was my first Italian book, which gave me a certain freedom and I decided to do away with perspective. The drawing is very ugly, flattened into a plane. It is colour which gives the sensation of realism to the picture as if we are looking at it from far away. I was looking for a very intense effect and as it happens,

this peculiarity has been identified as an element of my style, but at the same time one’s own style can be something of a prison, can’t it?, so I wanted to show the Potemkin’s guns with an exasperated perspective. Why? I was trying to make it clear that I was telling a story which had possibly never happened, that the events that I was narrating had been made up, that in reality nothing happened. That is to say to affirm that it was a story, that nothing was true. It’s a formula. I think that an illustrator has to have an idea of things before making a film, oops, what

la dignidad a las personas, a los deportados retratados en las fotografías, de modo que me dije que ese no era el camino, no me parecía correcto dibujar en una ficción lo que fue verdad. Me pareció una falta de respeto, no quería “usar” a aquellas personas, así que quité las caras del libro para que solamente hablaran los objetos. Ni lágrimas ni caras tristes, solo objetos que hablan. Fue el único modo que encontré para contar esa historia. Si hubiera dibujado las caras, el libro no habría servido para nada.

De modo que renunció a seguir fielmente la realidad pues decidió no reproducir los rostros de los auténticos protagonistas –y víctimas– de un acontecimiento histórico terriblemente dramático. Sin embargo, en su obra se puede apreciar una extrema fidelidad a la historia. Una minuciosidad absoluta en reflejar las cosas tal y como fueron:

a mistake, I mean, before making a book.

It’s obvious that I approach a book as if I were directing a film: first you’ve got to have an idea, a narrative voice. In Erika’s Story, in fact, I tried to draw the faces of the characters but I felt I was taking away the dignity of the deportees portrayed in the photographs so that I said to myself that depicting the truth in a work of fiction wasn’t the way. It seemed to me a lack of respect; I didn’t want to “use” those people, so I took away their faces so that only the objects would speak.

No tears or sad faces, just object which speak. It was the only way I found of telling that story. If I had drawn the faces, the book would have served no useful purpose.

So you renounced being true to the reality of a terribly dramatic historical event by deciding not to reproduce the faces of the real protagonists and

Si tengo que ilustrar a Dickens, lo normal es que me pregunte cómo era Londres en el siglo xix.

No existe un Londres del xix, como no existe una Florencia medieval, así que hay que tratar de documentarse. El ilustrador tiene que ser también un arqui-

were; clothes, architecture, street signs, shop signs, objects, etc. There is a lot of documentation going into this, then.

It’s true, but it has taken the twenty years I’ve been working unquestioningly and instinctively to become conscious of this aspect, because this job is like alchemy: first of all you do it and then you find out the formula. It’s taken me a long time to work it out. I mean, illustrating a book is like taking on a film; you have to respect the genre: light comedy, tragedy, historical, etc, so that it is a bit like being a director. If I have to illustrate Dickens, it’s normal that I ask myself what 19th Century London was like.

There is no 19th Century London, just as there is no medieval Florence so you have to try to build it up. The illustrator

Si se acepta el reto de elaborar una obra de carácter histórico, es necesario encontrar la manera de resolverla.

Por último, ¿siente predilección por alguno de sus libros?

Son todos muy distintos. En El último refugio me dije que no tenía que suceder nada, algo que me divirtió. No quería poner nada de manifiesto, pero si al final alguien encontraba un significado, ¡me habría desenmascarado! El pro-

has to be an architect and a researcher as well. A director can delegate part of his job to others but the illustrator has to do it all himself. Perhaps, setting the scene is the hardest part for the illustrator as he can fantasise but he can’t go out of the theme, he must root himself in historical time, he cannot invent. It’s like when Kubrick took on Barry Lyndon: it’s as much an 18th Century watercolour as an oil painting by Rembrandt but at the same time its style is Kubrick’s own.

If you take on the task of creating a historical work you have to find the way of resolving it.

Finally, is there one of your books you like more than any other?

They are all very different. In The Last Resort I said to myself that nothing had to happen, which I found fun. I didn’t want to show anything, but if in the end someone were to find some meaning in it they would

He colocado a personajes fáciles de identificar, aunque si el lector no les reconoce es inútil citarlos: está Maigret, Long John Silver, el periodista en blanco y negro; son personajes que vienen de otros ámbitos. También he utilizado para las escenas material que ya existía.

De todos modos, el libro que más me gusta es el primero, Rosa Blanca, porque necesitaba contar a mi hija una historia a partir de un cuento, pero de manera más tierna. Con Pinocho me lo he pasado bien porque me ha permitido contar, no la Toscana turística sino la de mi infancia, que puede ser tenebrosa, dura y difícil, como el mundo de Pinocho.

have unmasked me! The problem is that as I didn’t have any ideas, I kind of looted from everything that I had remembered from things I had read previously; although I had to put Pinocchio in the centre as otherwise it would have been too much.

You cannot control Pinocchio. I put easily identifiable characters in it, although if the reader doesn’t recognise them it is useless to name them: Maigret is there, Long John Silver, the black and white reporter; they are characters who come from other backgrounds. I have also used pre-existing material for the settings.

Anyway, the book I like most is the first one, Rose Blanche, because it was necessary to tell my daughter a story based on a tale, but in a more tender way. I had a good time with Pinocchio because it allowed me to recount the Tuscany of my childhood which could be gloomy, hard and difficult like Pinocchio’s world, rather than the tourist’s Tuscany.

DoCampo · La necesidad y la misma existencia de un cine infantil y/o juvenil, la tiene suficientemente acreditada el propio sistema, puesto que hoy una gran parte del cine que se hace, en particular del cine-espectáculo, tiene todos los elementos que distinguen la literatura infantil y juvenil, especialmente la fantástica. No sólo en aquellas películas que son adaptaciones de obras preexistentes, como pueda ser el caso de los diversos Harry Potter, de Columbus, Cuarón, Newell o Yates, El señor de los anillos, de Peter

Jackson, Las crónicas de Narnia, de Andrew Adamson, Matilda, de Danny de Vito o la Alicia, de Tim Burton… Sino en películas que no tienen detrás una obra literaria infantil como pueda ser el caso de Piratas del Caribe, de Gore Verbinski, lleno de referencias narrativas de la LIJ. En fin, que casi todo el cine-espectáculo va dirigido a los adolescentes, lo que revela una necesidad de tales obras. Ahora tendremos que ver si esto responde a una necesidad que los chicos tienen o se trata de una necesidad que les están creando.

Xabier P. DoCampo · The necessity for and the very existence of children’s films is backed up by the system itself, given that today a large part of the films which are made, show films in particular, contain all the elements which characterise children’s literature, especially fantasy.

Not only in those films which are adaptations of pre-existing works such as the various Harry Potters by Columbus, Cuarón, Newell or Yates, The Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson, The Chronicles of Narnia by Andrew Adamson, Matilda by

Danny de Vito or Alice by Tim Burton, but also in films which are not based on a work of children’s literature such as Pirates of the Caribbean by Gore Verbinski, full of literary references from children’s literature. So, almost all show films are aimed at adolescents which reveals a need for such works. Now we’ll have to see if this is responding to a real need of youngsters or a need which is being created for them.

Carlos Amil · Sí, es muy curioso, porque en el mundo del cine se está dando, ahora mismo, una orientación, que es lo que tú dices, hacia los adolescentes, que son los que están consumiendo cine de forma mayoritaria en todo el mundo, y, precisamente es por eso que aparece, a partir de El señor de los anillos una eclosión del cineespectáculo de temática fantástica dirigido a los chicos. Aunque tú incluyes alguna obra como Piratas del Caribe, que es un intento de recuperar aquellas películas del viejo cine de aventuras. Que, aunque aquél era un

cine que se hacía con la idea de que fuese para todos los espectadores, enganchaba de una forma especial a los chicos.

XPD · A eso me refiero, porque la obra de Verbinski, sin ser un remake, sí busca una relación con aquella Piratas del mar Caribe de Cecil B. cine procedente del videojuego que nada tiene de infantil por su violencia.

CA · Pero también sucede que los adultos están dejando de ir al cine, entre otras cosas, porque ese cine que decíamos para adultos, no se entienda en el sentido de la censura moral del franquismo, sino en el sentido de los intereses no compartidos por los chavales, se está refugiando mayormente

También hay que tener en cuenta que, al mismo tiempo se intenta potenciar un cine infantil. En España se

nota que algo se mueve por ahí, aunque excesivamente dirigido al cine de animación. Y lo que yo echo de menos es la presencia de un cine que ya casi no se hace, para entendernos, me refiero a aquel cine infantil británico, como Emilio y los detectives, de Franziska Buch, el mucho buen cine nórdico, las películas de Karel Zeman y otras muchas, que, sin dejar de tener el

componente de aventura necesaria para enganchar a los niños, no rehúyen hablar de la vida, de su vida.

XPD · Y ahí es donde deja de tener importancia que el espectador sea adulto o niño. Aunque yo sí creo que el cine infantil no se puede desligar de ciertos elementos específicos, particulares que lo distinguen.

I want to think of cinema which in the same way as in literature can be enjoyed by children against a cinema which only adults can understand because it speaks of their experiences which the children haven’t had yet.

This truism is the way to define a cinema whose quality is given by its worthy entertainment function as well as its artistic essence and therefore gives a way of contributing to the formation of the filmgoer, hel-

ocurre con la literatura, también pueden ver con gusto los niños, frente a un cine que sólo los adultos comprenden porque habla de sus experiencias de vida que los chicos aún no han alcanzado. Esta obviedad es camino para definir un cine cuya calidad viene dada por, además de su dignísima función de entretenimiento, su esencia de arte y, por tanto, de camino para contribuir a crear el espectador de cine que habrá de ser ese chico, ayudando a comprender

mejor los códigos, a ser un espectador crítico y no asimilacionista, reflexivo, analítico… Y, así, saber relacionar la obra artística con la vida, con la realidad exterior.

CA · Yo creo que es justo así. Yo no soy quien debo decir que en La casa de la luz esto está conseguido o no, pero uno de los elementos motores con los que hemos jugado de una forma absolutamente consciente, es la de atender mucho al fuera de campo, quiero decir, esas cosas que no se

ven en la pantalla y que hacen reaccionar a los personajes, y llevan a que los espectadores se proyecten fuera del espacio que les estamos mostrando para intentar adivinar o saber qué es lo que está pasando. Todo esto enlazado con lo que queríamos trasladar a la pantalla, y que estaba claramente en la novela, que era cómo la mirada superficial nos puede llevar a error, que detrás hay otros elementos que precisan una observación más crítica, más profunda.

CA · I think that’s exactly right. It’s not my place to say if La Casa de la Luz achieves this or not, but one of the driving elements which we have bet on consciously is attention to off-screen, I mean those things which aren’t seen on the screen

and which make the characters react and make the viewers project themselves out of the space we are showing them so they attempt to guess or find out what is going on. All of this is linked to what we wanted to transfer to the screen and what was clearly in the novel which was that a superficial glance could make us make a mistake, that behind that there are other elements which require a more critical, deeper look.

XPD · Now that we are talking about La Casa de la Luz, in this sense I would like to pick out some things which seem to me particularly well done in the film.

For example, referring to the visuals, to the perception of the characters and its transfer to the spectator when the children go into the picture. In that moment they experience a transformation, a transfiguration and how later on, having crossed this boundary, the new reality in which they

XPD · Ya que hablamos de La casa de la luz, en ese sentido yo quería destacar algunas cosas que me parece que están muy logradas en la película. Como es, en lo referente a la visión, a la percepción de los personajes y su traslación al espectador, cuando los chicos entran en el cuadro. En ese momento sucede en ellos una transformación, una transfiguración, y cómo luego, al traspasar esa frontera, la realidad nueva en la que van a vivir les va a demostrar que

aquel bienestar y aquella sensación de origen desconocido, pero agradable, es tan sólo una parte de lo que significa penetrar en ese cuadro, lo cual se les hará camino de conocimiento, por tanto algo bueno, por más que esté lleno de dificultades. Cuando vuelvan a su mundo cotidiano, ya no serán los mismos que eran, habrán conocido, habrán madurado.

CA · Sí, sí. Pero fue muy arduo encontrar el camino visual que nos permitiese mezclar

ahí las dos realidades de la película: aquella en la cual los acontecimientos forman parte de una aventura vivida y, al mismo tiempo, lo son de una aventura soñada. Porque había que darle al espectador esa información: los niños están viendo el cuadro y están viviendo lo que sucede en el cuadro, y era algo que debíamos hacer para adaptarnos también a eso que está en la novela; lo que el cuadro contiene no es un simple reflejo de la realidad, sino que lo pintado

Because we had to give the viewer that information: the children are watching the picture and experiencing what happens in it and it was something that we had also to do to adapt to what was in the novel: what is contained

in the picture is not a simple reflection of reality, but also what is painted builds a new reality. Just like what film does, the film itself as a work of art. The game consists of the viewer understanding that new reality. What happens is that what you were doing in the novel, where the children went into different pictures to understand the way, can’t be done like that in the film because it would break the rhythm and would go against the game that we’ve star-

construye una realidad nueva. Como también lo hace el cine, la propia película como obra artística. El juego consiste en que el espectador aprehenda esa nueva realidad. Lo que ocurre es que lo que tú hacías en la novela, en la cual los chicos entraban en distintos cuadros para comprender ese camino, en la película no puedo hacerlo así porque rompería el ritmo y contravendría el juego que hemos iniciado, me iría por

otros caminos. ¿Y cómo puedo conseguirlo?

Haciendo que los niños, a lo largo de la película, atraviesen varias veces la misma puerta, equivalente visual de las sucesivas entradas en los cuadros. Además esto actúa como campana de Pavlov para el espectador al delatarle esos pasos continuos de la realidad objetiva a la realidad soñada.

XPD · Hombre, tanto que yo tengo la sensación durante la película de que

cuando ésta comenzó, todo lo que me están contando ya ha sucedido, porque aquello suena todo a historia contada, de algo que se les está contado a los protagonistas, no sé por quién. Por Duarte, por Pumariño… eso no lo sé. Y eso nace de algo que habéis hecho muy inteligentemente, como es descubrir la tramoya varias veces a lo largo del relato. XPD · Well, so much so that during the film I feel when that started, that everything I am being told has already happened because it all sounds like a retold story, of something that is being told to the protagonists, I don’t know who by. By Duarte, by Pumariño… that I don’t know. And this stems from something which you have done very

intelligently, which is to reveal the trick many times during the story. In this way you made it clear that the storyteller knows things that the listener doesn’t and that what we see here is the story from the point of view of the children, that is to say from the point of view of the listener. That is the same point of view as that of the viewer.

XPD · No. No creo que no estuviese.

Vamos a ver, un caso. Los chicos van huyendo, atraviesan un cuadro y se esconden detrás de los árboles que hay en ese cuadro. Llega el capitán que los persigue y

no sabe donde se han metido, está perplejo y los chavales ven su rostro desde dentro del cuadro. Entonces yo, como espectador, me digo: “¡Ah, me cuentan que se metieron en el cuadro y se escondieron detrás de los árboles!”. ¿Y qué veo?

A los niños y a Pumariño escondidos detrás de unos árboles falsos, de tramoya.

XPD · No. I don’t think it was. Let’s see – an example. The children run away, then they go into a picture and they hide behind the trees that are in the picture.

The captain who is chasing them arrives and doesn’t know where they’ve got to.

He is puzzled and the children see his face from inside the picture. Then I, as a viewer, say to myself, “Ah, they’re telling me that they went into the picture and they hid behind the trees.” And what do I see? I see the children and Pumariño hidden behind some false stage trees.

The captain only knows that they have disappeared, the children know more.

CA · Bien. Visto así tengo que admitir que eso sí estaba previsto. Es la respuesta cinematográfica a una frase que Duarte dice en la novela referida a que los chicos conocen ahora detalles de los acontecimientos de la vida que antes no conocían.

Dice Duarte, “y es que ahora habéis aprendido a mirar de otra manera”. Es la mirada

ya cultivada de los chicos frente a la mirada simple del capitán. Y todo esto sin dejar de ser niños, sin verse convertidos en adultos pequeñitos, ni en repelentes niños sabihondos, simplemente seres que aprenden y crecen.

XPD · Y como niños se comportan durante toda la película. Hay un detalle que a mí me gusta mucho, aunque a algunos se lo he escuchado señalar en tono de

crítica. Me refiero a toda una serie de planos generales en los cuales vemos a los chicos que van de un lado a otro siempre corriendo. Corren para ir a preguntar aquí, corren para ver si Duarte está en el barco, corren por la carballeira, corren… Y no sé si tú lo creaste como recurso narrativo, como elemento de transición u obligado por alguna necesidad técnica, pero a mí me parece un acierto, porque los chicos

muy bien la idea de que pareciese que había una especie de resorte automático, echaba uno a correr y allá iban los otros detrás. Incluso cuando alguien le dice a Alicia que no haga tal cosa o no vaya a tal sitio y ella va igualmente, inmediatamente van todos detrás de ella para no dejarla sola. Esto de correr, o de estar en continua acción común, entre ellos, unido al recurso del plano general, apoya bien esa

idea de grupo. Y esto contó con la colaboración decidida del director de fotografía, apoyo que me llevó a desechar la idea de planificar de otro modo en algunos casos. Por ejemplo, la no utilización de un mayor número de primeros planos, recurso muy agradecido en el cine con niños. XPD · Without completely leaving your film, a work in which children and grown-ups interact, which in the end is what happens in real life, where children and adults live a life more in common, I’m thinking now of this interaction as portrayed in the cinema. I’m reminded of A High Wind in Jamaica by Alexander Mackendrick in which the children turn out to be evil; The Night of the Hunter by Charles Laughton in which the children are victims of the adults, all of the adults except the character played by Lillian Gish; To Kill a Mockingbird by Robert Mulligan, where Atticus and the girl help

Y todas esas películas que tú citas y otras muchas nos vienen a hablar no tanto de esos niños, cuanto de los adultos que serán esos niños en el futuro. Y esa es una reflexión que también nos planteamos en La casa de la luz. Los adultos lo mismo pueden ser amenaza que refugio y los chicos, cuando acaba la película, como tú has dicho anteriormente, ya no son los mismos, han elegido su mirada, aquélla con la que se disponen a aprehender la realidad.

¿Por qué tendemos a comparar libros y films? No deberíamos confrontarlos ya que son medios que usan lenguajes diferentes. Un original nunca puede quedar intacto cuando se «traduce» a otro soporte, puesto que se origina otro original.

Si no queremos decepcionarnos, es preferible disfrutarlos independientemente de su fuente. He aquí unos ejemplos de conversiones originales.

Why do we tend to compare books and films? We ought not to set them against each other as they are media which use different languages. An original can never remain intact when it is translated into another medium given that this creates another original. If we don’t want to feel disappointed it is preferable to enjoy them irrespective of their source. Here we present some examples of original transfers.

Del libro ilustrado al corto animado II ¿Cuánto se tarda en leer un álbum?

Para traducir un álbum «con fidelidad» al lenguaje cinematográfico, éste no puede ser más largo que un cortito cortometraje. Sin sumar ni restar nada en la trama, menos de 10 minutos serán suficientes.

Five minutes are enough to know Max’s adventure where the wild things are. With a very appropriate use of cinematographic language, the frame will be expanded to show us the misadventures of Max, his bedroom will turn into a jungle thanks to a chain of short circuits and the slow motion movements of the monsters will inflame their monstrosity.

From picture book to short cartoon II How long does it take to read a picture book? To faithfully adapt one into cinematographic language the film cannot be longer than a short feature. Without adding or taking away from the plot, less than 10 minutes will suffice.

Del libro ilustrado al largometraje de animación ¿Es obligatorio ser fiel al original? ¿No puede un creador inventar personajes, paisajes y sucesos? ¿Es ilícito crear una obra basándose en otra, a partir de otra, inspirándose en otra? Podemos comparar el origen y el nuevo original, pero, ¿qué conseguimos con ello?

Es imposible comparar el cómodo y plácido viaje en tren cantando villancicos y tomando chocolate caliente que presenta el libro, con el peligrosísimo y vertiginoso trayecto plagado de accidentes que muestra el film. ¿Pueden compararse 15 imágenes estáticas y un film animado con ordenador 3D y motion capture?

Siete versiones diferentes con la participación de nueve guionistas para realizar un film que, gracias a los efectos especiales y un ritmo trepidante, multiplica por mil las aventuras y la acción.

En el libro, cuando dos niños juegan a Jumanji aparece un león, una docena de monos, un aguacero, un explorador, una mosca tse-tsé, un tropel de rinocerontes, una boa, y un volcán, y todo ocurre dentro de la casa.

En el film son cuatro jugadores de diferentes edades los que tienen que vérselas con mosquitos gigantes, monos sádicos, un fiero león, flores venenosas, un cazador asesino, una estampida de rinocerontes, cebras, pajarracos y elefantes, arenas movedizas, cocodrilos, arañas… la casa se ha convertido en una jungla y la ciudad está totalmente arrasada. ¿Quién quiere compararlos?

Seven different versions with the participation of nine scriptwriters were needed to make a film which, thanks to the special effects and a headlong rhythm, multiplies the adventures and the action a thousand fold.

In the book, when the children play Jumanji, a lion, a dozen monkeys, torrential rain, an explorer, a tsetse fly, a herd of rhinos, a boa constrictor and a volcano appear and everything happens within the house.

In the film there are four players of different ages and they are confronted with giant mosquitoes, sadistic monkeys, a wild lion, poisonous flowers, a murderous hunter, a stampede of rhinoceros, zebras, enormous birds and elephants, quicksand, crocodiles, spiders… the house has turned into a jungle and the town is totally destroyed.

Spike Jonze, con la ayuda del novelita Dave Eggers, ha transferido 20 dobles páginas ilustradas con unas diez frases de aproximadamente 300 palabras a un metraje de 2 horas. Han aparecido nuevos personajes (una hermana del protagonista, los amigos de ésta, el novio de la madre...).

Los monstruos del film de allá donde viven los monstruos hablan, piensan, sienten, aman, sufren... Hay quien tilda el film de tedioso, aburrido, pretencioso e innecesario y lo acusan de apartarse del poético espíritu del álbum. ¿Hubiera sido este film tan duramente criticado si no se hubiera basado en un clásico de la literatura infantil?

Nos encontramos ante una maravillosa y emocionante re-creación que, para poder ser apreciada imparcialmente, nunca debería compararse con su fuente original.

Spike Jonze, with the help of novelist Dave Eggers, has transformed 20 double-page spreads of illustrations with 10 phrases of approximately 300 words into a 2-hour long feature film. New characters appear (a sister of the protagonist, her friends, the mother’s boyfriend…). The monsters in the film talk, think, feel, love, suffer... There are those who stigmatize the film as tedious, boring, pretentious and unnecessary and accuse it of departing from the poetic spirit of the book. Would it have been criticised so harshly if it had not been based on a classic of children’s literature? We are presented with a marvellous and emotional re-creation which should never be compared with the original source to be appreciated without prejudice.

El cómic original narra sin palabra alguna la amistad entre un niño y un muñeco de nieve que durante la noche ha cobrado vida y es capaz de volar. El film nos cuenta la historia con alguna variación, pero con la misma exquisitez, delicadeza y cariño. Y lo hace ayudado del movimiento, la música y la letra de la canción Walking in the Air. ¿Era necesario publicar un libro ilustrado con fotogramas del film? ¿Era necesario acompañar las imágenes de un texto frío y descriptivo?

The original comic book tells the wordless story of the friendship between a boy and a snowman who comes to life during the night and who can fly. The film tells the story with slight variations but with the same exquisiteness, delicacy and affection.

Del film al libro ilustrado No es muy habitual encontrar libros ilustrados nacidos a partir de historias fílmicas originales. He aquí dos ejemplos de dos posibles vías: crear nuevas historias a partir de personajes cinematográficos o ilustrar el texto escogiendo los fotogramas más significativos.

From film to picture book It is not very common to find picture books derived from stories which began as films. Here are two examples of possible ways: creating new stories based on film characters or illustrating the text with significant stills.

Fiel al espíritu de los films de Jacques Tati, David Merveille inventa una historia muy adecuada para el personaje de Monsieur Hulot. Nos encontramos ante un fantástico álbum sin palabras –elección muy apropiada– en el que son numerosas las referencias a Mon Oncle y demás filmografía de este cineasta francés.

Faithful to the spirit of Jacques Tati’s films, David Merveille creates a most suitable story for the character of Monsieur Hulot. We find a fantastic book with no text in which there are numerous references to Mon Oncle and other works of the French director.

Aunque así se pretenda, el King Kong de Anthony Browne no es una «traducción fiel» del primer film sobre este gigantesco gorila dirigido por Cooper y Schoedsack en 1933. Aunque la mayoría de ilustraciones estén dibujadas a partir de los fotogramas originales, el texto es una mera y fría transcripción de la acción.

La «marilynización» de la protagonista y esconder gorilas entre las multitudes, las vetas de la madera, los pliegues de la ropa y otros adornos, son las únicas aportaciones del ilustrador a esta historia que ha despojado de emoción y ternura.

Although that was the intention, Anthony Browne’s King Kong is not a faithful translation of the first film about the enormous gorilla directed by Cooper and Schoesdak in 1933. Although the majority of pictures are drawn from original stills, the text is merely a cold transcription of the action. The “Marilynisation” of the protagonist, hiding gorillas amongst the crowds, the grain of the wood, the folds in clothes and other decorations are the only contributions of the illustrator to this story which has been stripped of emotion and tenderness.

Cómic, álbum y cine son disciplinas que se influyen y contagian porque, en esencia, son lo mismo, arte secuencial. Brian Selznick, con La invención de Hugo Cabret, ha conseguido crear un libro sumamente original e innovador donde el lector debe comportarse también como espectador. Éste es un «álbum-cine», y no porque el tema haga referencia a los orígenes del séptimo arte, sino porque la lectura de esta obra se asemeja a la visión de un film.

El lector se enfrenta a páginas con texto alternadas con secuencias gráficas sin palabras que debe visualizar de manera cinematográfica, sin pausa.

Ya han comprado los derechos del libro para recrear esta historia en un film. ¿Renunciaremos a la comparación?

Comics, books and film are disciplines which influence and infect each other because essentially they are the same – sequential art. Brian Selznick, with The Invention of Hugo Cabret, has managed to create a highly original and innovative book where the reader has to behave like a spectator too. This is a “film-book”; not because the theme makes reference to the origins of the seventh art but because reading this book is very like watching a film. The reader faces pages of text alternating with wordless graphic sequences which he has to visualise in a cinematic manner, without stopping.

El ilustrador, autor de cómic, cartelista, pintor… Miguelanxo Prado se hace cineasta, y con el músico Nani García crea una obra de una fulgurante belleza: De Profundis. El espectador es llevado al fondo del mar, de un mar que contiene todos los secretos y cuando aquél pretende penetrarlos, desentrañarlos, éstos le abducen y lo integran. A partir de ahí el viaje al fondo del mar se convierte en un

camino por nuestro propio corazón.

En ese sentido yo siempre he sentido gran admiración por Stanley Kubrick, quizás como autor cinematográfico me interese más Francis Ford Coppola, pero Kubrik era el director que hacía Barry Lyndon, que hacía Lolita, que hacía 2001… Cada vez que cogía una nueva historia cambiaba de

[MP] Myths, as part of an epic theme, are passionate and I have already said that I am not. So what attracts me, what interests me about myths, which is not passionate, which is not epic, is the poetic. And that is, and poetic is the only word for it, in all the charge which myths acquire over time.

When we were saying goodbye, we looked again at the Sea through the door which gives onto the steps and we saw a splendid whale of impossible colours come out of the water onto the surface.

uién no ha sido sorprendido, en mitad de una travesura, por un alarido de sus padres ordenándole irse a su habitación? Todos hemos sufrido este castigo tan recurrente, y todos, además, hemos odiado a nuestros padres por ello.

Esto mismo le ocurre a Max, el protagonista de esta aventura, cuando es enviado a la cama sin cenar tras enojar a su madre con sus continuas fechorías.

Enfurruñado, se encierra en su habitación, aunque pronto el enfado y el rencor dejan paso al juego y a la imaginación. La habitación comienza a convertirse en un mundo fantástico, un mundo que Max explorará atravesando bosques y surcando mares, hasta llegar al lugar “donde viven los monstruos”. Allí será coronado rey de todos los monstruos y podrá dar rienda suelta a sus deseos sin que nadie le lleve la contraria. Por desgracia, el reino de los caprichos de Max no es lo suficientemente gratificante para él como para sustituir un abrazo de mamá.

This type of episode in infancy is probably one of our first existential experiences which, in the long journey of emotional development, bring

Por supuesto, después de realizar un viaje tan emocionante, no hay nada como regresar a casa y descubrir que la cena, que mamá nos ha preparado, está aun caliente.

Escrito e ilustrado por Maurice Sendak, y publicado por primera vez en 1963, este libro es ya todo un clásico de la literatura infantil ilustrada. Fue condecorado con la Medalla Caldecott en 1964, aunque su publicación no estuvo exenta de polémica. Los adultos no vieron con buenos ojos la aparición de un libro para niños en el que la ira y los monstruos aparecían representados de forma

tan explícita. Sin duda, las ilustraciones que iluminan esta historia, llenas de figuras grotescas y peludas con grandes dientes, daban más miedo a los padres que a sus hijos. Estas imágenes, abarrotadas de imprecisos trazos de plumilla, se han ganado un espacio preferente en nuestra memoria visual.

En la actualidad no es difícil encontrar otros títulos en los que temas y sentimientos, secuestrados históricamente a la literatura infantil, son retratados con naturalidad. Maurice Sendak fue un pionero en contradecir los cánones de lo psicológicamente correcto en esta disciplina. Inició con ello una costumbre cada vez más extendida entre escritores e ilustradores: tratar a los pequeños lectores con respeto.

But perhaps the most important thing that we can learn from these personal and nontransferable experiences is to canalize our anger through games and imagination. Confronting our hopes and fears by recreating them in our fantasies helps us to cope with reality. This is a lesson which manifests itself in the necessity of humans for fiction.

Of course, after undertaking such an exciting journey, there is nothing like going home and finding that the supper which Mum has prepared for us, is still hot.

Written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak and first published in 1963, this book has already become a classic of illustrated children’s literature. It was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1964, although its publication was not without polemic. Some adults did not look well upon the appearance of a children’s book in which anger

and monsters were represented in such an explicit way. Without a doubt, the illustrations which throw light on the story, full of grotesque, hairy figures with huge teeth frightened the parents more than the children. These images, stuffed with rough pen lines have won an honoured place in our visual memory.

Nowadays it is not difficult to find other titles where themes and emotions, removed from children’s literature in the past, are treated naturally.

Maurice Sendak was a pioneer in contradicting the canon of the psychologically correct in this field. With this book he began a more and more widespread custom among writers and illustrators: treating young readers with respect.

While I am writing these words a film version of this book is being released. Let’s hope that it is as good as the book.

ntre las historias que celebran el silencio hay algunas que lo hacen callando el texto escrito.

Cuando hay un proyecto estético que sostiene la decisión de ceder la voz narrativa exclusivamente a las imágenes, la ausencia de palabras no es allí una falta sino una necesidad artística y, en ocasiones, un reclamo “climático” de la narración.

Además, en los relatos que avanzan solo a fuerza de imagen las palabras siempre están en estado de susurro detrás de los ojos. Por eso, la idea de “historias sin palabras” es una verdad a medias.

El muñeco de nieve del ilustrador inglés Raymond Briggs es una de esas historias silenciosas que se ha transformado en un “clásico” contemporáneo.

Publicado en 1978, fue adaptado y llevado al cine en 1982 en un cortometraje realizado por Dianne Jackson.

En el libro, la narración avanza como en un cómic o mejor, como en un story board que invita a una suerte de lectura cinematográfica por medio de viñetas. Estos cuadros, según los requerimientos dramáticos de las situaciones representadas, varían su tamaño llegando a expandirse a la doble

mong the stories which celebrate silence there are some which do it by silencing the written text. When an aesthetic project supports the decision to leave the narrative voice exclusively in the hands of images, the absence of words is not a fault but an artistic necessity and sometimes a “climatic” attraction of the story. Moreover, in stories which are driven only by the force of images, the words are always like a whisper behind one’s eyes.

For that reason, the idea of a “wordless story” is only a half truth. El muñeco de nieve by the English illustrator Raymond Briggs is one of those silent stories which has become a contemporary classic. Published in 1978, it was adapted and made into a film short in 1982 by Dianne Jackson.

In the book, the story is told as a comic strip or more accurately as a story board which invites being read as a film frame by frame. The size of each vignette varies according to the dramatic requirements of the situation portrayed, expanding to a full double page in narra-

página en momentos de clímax narrativo o a una gran condensación, como en el caso de la última imagen, mínima y solitaria en medio de la página en blanco.

Se trata de la historia de un niño que una mañana invernal arma un muñeco de nieve en el jardín de su casa. Por la noche, cuando todos duermen, el pequeño despierta y al bajar al jardín ve que el muñeco ha cobrado vida. Lo invita a entrar a la casa y, evitando despertar a los padres, vive con él una serie de lúdicas peripecias de suave humor que tienen que ver con la condición material del muñeco. Ser de nieve tiene sus complicaciones, sobre todo a la hora de sentarse en un sillón junto al fuego o abrir la canilla de agua caliente en la cocina. Tras una secuencia de variadas diversiones propias del doble extrañamiento (níveo y humano) salen de la casa y el muñeco lleva al niño a volar por la ciudad. Aquí las viñetas ocupan la doble página y las ilustraciones a lápiz de color de Briggs despliegan una belleza invernal que califican aun más el silencio elegido para esta historia. Tras el fantástico paseo,

ante las primeras luces que indican el final de la noche regresan y se despiden. Al despertar al día siguiente el niño encuentra que el muñeco se ha derretido.

Además de los agregados navideños y la expansión de los momentos humorísticos del libro, llama la atención la manera diferente en que el film resuelve la transición entre la realidad representada y el mundo del sueño. Mientras que en el libro el momento en que el muñeco cobra vida no está precedido por ninguna explicación mágica, ya que sólo se cambia de mundos leve y “naturalmente” de una viñeta a otra, en la película este tránsito es señalado por un extraño brillo en el muñeco. Lo mismo ocurre con la imagen final.

El libro cierra con la contundencia de las leyes de la naturaleza (la nieve se derrite con el sol) y no se interroga sobre los límites entre vigilia y ensoñación. En cambio la escena final de la película agrega a la constatación de la ley natural la evidencia de un objeto traído del vuelo fantástico.

Signo posible de que los sueños tienen tanta carnadura como la realidad.

The film is about a boy who builds a snowman in the garden of his house one winter’s morning. During the night, when everyone is sleeping, the boy wakes up and when he goes out into the garden he sees that the snowman has come to life. He invites the snowman into his house and without waking his parents, has a few gently humorous adventures related to the material conditions of the snowman. Being made of snow poses its problems; especially when you sit on a fireside chair or turn on the hot-water tap in the kitchen. After a sequence of various diversions properly derived from the double estrangement (snowy and human) they leave the house and the snowman takes the boy flying through the city. Here the vignettes take up the double page and the colour pencil drawings of Briggs display a wintry beauty which reinforces still more the silence chosen for the story. After this fantastic flight, with the

first lights which indicate the end of the night, they return and say farewell. When he wakes the following morning, the boy finds that the snowman has melted.

As well the Christmassy additions and the expansion of the humorous moments of the book, what strikes one about the film is how it deals with the transition from the real world to the world of dreams. While in the book the moment when the snowman comes to life is not preceded by any magical explanation but the change of worlds is made lightly and “naturally” from one vignette to the next, in the film this transition is marked by the snowman shining strangely. The same occurs with the final image.

The book closes with the invariability of the laws of nature (snow melts in the sun) and doesn’t question the boundary between wakefulness and fantasy. In contrast the film’s final scene adds to the confirmation of the laws of nature the evidence of an object brought from the fantasy flight; a possible sign that dreams are just as real as reality.

o resulta fácil, como lector, encontrar en las representaciones literarias y gráficas de la Navidad algo de novedad, de sutileza.

Tenemos la mirada ahíta de colores rutilantes, figuras rutinarias y frases estereotipadas. Por lo general, las narraciones propenden a lo sabido y al fulgor en detrimento de la insinuación y los claroscuros.

No sucede eso con El expreso polar, álbum escrito e ilustrado por Chris van Allsburg. Y no es que el tema sea radicalmente original, no podría serlo la expectación de un niño ante la llegada de Santa Claus el día de Nochebuena, sino que es su modo de mostrar la espera lo que le otorga singularidad. En sus páginas es posible descubrir algo tan anhelado como escaso: misterio. Chris van Allsburg opta por colores pastel, trazos tenues y difuminados, contornos suaves. Nada de estridencias cromáticas ni personajes dinámicos y risueños. Sólo delicadeza, quietud y sugerencia. Ese recurso crea de inmediato una cálida atmósfera de ensueño, levemente inquietante, y dota a la historia de

t is not easy as a reader to find anything new or subtle in the literary and graphic representations of Christmas. Our gaze is stuffed full of sparkling colours, routine figures and clichés. In general, the stories tend towards the already known and splendour and to the detriment of insinuation and chiaroscuros.

This doesn’t happen with El expreso polar [The Polar Express], written and illustrated by Chris van Allsburg. And it is not that the theme is radically original, the expectations of a child for the visit of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve could not be, but it is its way of showing the expectation which grants it singularity. In its pages it is possible to discover something as desired as it is scarce: mystery. Chris van Allsburg selects pastel colours, fine blurred strokes and smooth shapes. There are no strident colours or dynamic smiling characters –just delicacy, stillness and suggestion. This recourse immediately creates a slightly disconcerting, warm atmosphere of illusion, and gives the story the dignified quality of evocation. This

esa cualidad tan digna de agradecer que es la evocación. Eso provoca en el lector la sensación de estar mirando dentro de sí más que observando las peripecias de otros. Narrada desde la vejez, la historia está impregnada del color y el idioma de la melancolía.

El arranque del libro nos sitúa en la habitación de un niño que mira desde su cama hacia la calle, atento al sonido que más anhela escuchar: el tintineo de los cascabeles del trineo de Santa Claus. Es un niño a punto de perder su creencia, acosado por los comentarios escépticos de algún amigo. Ha comenzado a dudar, pero se resiste a perder su confianza. Contrariamente a lo esperado, un tren se detiene ante su casa. Y como en los sueños, donde todo ocurre sin extrañeza ni esfuerzo, el niño sube a él confiado y expectante. El destino del tren es el Polo Norte, el lugar donde Santa Claus tiene su residencia y donde los duendes a su servicio elaboran los juguetes que repartirán a los niños posteriormente. Una vez allí, el protagonista es elegido para recibir el primer regalo de la Navidad, pero en vez de

un objeto valioso pide simplemente uno de los cascabeles de plata del arnés de los renos que conducen el trineo de Santa Claus. Piensa que su posesión será la garantía de la existencia de Santa Claus y la escucha de su sonido seguirá indicando la perduración de la inocencia.

El autor ha optado por un texto conciso, transparente, ajeno a la empalagosa retórica navideña. Al igual que sucede con la elección de los colores, la narración prescinde de la adjetivación sensiblera habitual en las historias de Nochebuena. La emoción del relato procede de su austeridad, de su preferencia por lo intenso y esencial. Esa apuesta resuelve de paso uno de los desafíos gráficos más laboriosos: la transición del mundo de la realidad al mundo de la imaginación. Chris van Allsburg lo soluciona cambiando simplemente de página, pasando del plano medio de la habitación del protagonista al plano general de la calle donde está detenido el tren.

De ese modo tan sencillo ingresa el niño en los escenarios de su fantasía y así entran los lectores en la memoria de su infancia.

provokes in the reader the sensation of looking inside himself rather than observing the vicissitudes of others. The story, narrated from old age, is imbued with colour and the language of melancholy.

The opening of the book places us in the bedroom of a boy who is looking from his bed out into the street, listening carefully for the sound that he most wants to hear: the ringing of the bells of Santa’s sleigh. He is a boy on the point of losing his belief, harassed by the sceptical comments of some friend. He has begun to doubt but he fights against losing his confidence. Contrary to expectations, a train stops in front of his house and as in dreams, where everything happens without amazement or effort, the boy gets on board confidently and expectantly. The train’s destination is the North Pole where Santa Claus lives and where the elves who work for him make the toys which will later be distributed to the children. After he arrives, the protagonist is chosen to receive the first Christmas present but instead of a

valuable object he asks simply for one of the silver bells from the harness of the reindeer which pull Santa’s sleigh. He thinks that possessing it will guarantee the existence of Santa Claus and that hearing its sound will carry on indicating the survival of innocence.

The author has opted for a concise transparent text far from the cloying Christmas rhetoric. In the same way as occurred with the selection of colours, the narrative dispenses with the addition of soppy adjectives habitual in Christmas stories. The emotion of the story comes from its austerity, from its preference for the intense and the essential. This choice resolves in passing one of the most laborious graphical challenges: the transition from the real world to the world of the imagination. Chris van Allsburg solves it simply by turning the page, going from the medium shot of the boy’s bedroom to the general view of the street where the train has stopped. In this simple way the boy enters the scenes of his fantasy and thus the readers enter into the memories of their childhood.

nce upon a time in Spain…”, así comienza el libro The Story of Ferdinand, que en 1936 publicara la editorial Viking Press, Nueva York, con la firma de Munro Leaf y los dibujos de Robert Lawson.

Wilbur Monroe Leaf escribe esta historia como una oportunidad para que se luciera su amigo y mostrase su talento. Así, esa narración desmenuzada de escenas, esa provocación a la creatividad, esas descripciones de emociones… configuran una auténtica invitación cómplice a la ilustración, por lo que luce el cuento por el cuento con todas sus notas de humor y su final feliz “de los más felices entre todos los finales felices”.

Y es que Lawson responde a la invitación de su amigo Monro y aplica toda su maestría en el uso de la tinta, a plumilla y pincel, dominando en su composición los contrastes entre las generosas zonas blancas y los dibujos en negro. Un trabajo que sigue resultando rotundamente contemporáneo.

En 1938, los estudios Disney producen Ferdinand The Bull. La película se presenta como la versión del libro, citando al autor y al ilustrador del que copia

nce upon a time in Spain…” is the opening of the book, The Story of Ferdinand, which was published in 1936 by Viking Press, New York with text by Munro Leaf and illustrations by Robert Lawson Wilbur Monroe Leaf wrote this story as an opportunity for his friend to shine and show his talent.

Thus, the story broken up into small scenes, the provocation of creativity, those descriptions of emotions… forms an authentic invitation for complicity in the illustration, which is why the story shines as a story with all its touches of humour and its happy ending “one of the most happy endings of all happy endings”.

And Lawson reacted to his friend Monro’s invitation and applied all his mastery in his use of ink, pen and pencil, his composition dominating the contrasts between the black pictures and extensive white areas.

It is a work which is still completely contemporary.

In 1938, Disney studios produced Ferdinand The Bull. The film was presented as an adaptation of the book, citing the name of the author and the illustrator from whom they copied the backgrounds and the

los escenarios y los planos, aunque recrea a los personajes en la línea Disney. Así, en el caso del toro, el personaje pierde el vigor anguloso del de Lawson para asumir formas más redondeadas, humorísticas e infantiles, potenciando el carácter de cuento para niños.

Pero, junto a las formas, el contenido no pasa desapercibido: un toro que dispuesto a ser lidiado prefiere oler las flores en vez de pelear contra el torero, se erige como un alegato pacifista. Además, la actitud de Ferdinando cuando es novillo, el estar a su aire en vez de dar topetazos con el resto de los toros, reivindica el derecho a ser diferente. Y es, probablemente por este mensaje, por lo que aún hoy estamos hablando de él.

Y así llegamos a la versión de W. Klemke (Edition Holz, Berlín, 1966), un polifacético creador alemán, muy interesado por el diseño en los libros, que encaraba sus trabajos en conjunto de tal manera que consiguiera “los ingredientes necesarios para cumplir las intenciones del autor”.

En este sentido, Ferdinando el toro es un libro de tapa dura donde cubierta y contracubierta participan

scenes although the characters were recreated in the Disney house style. Thus, in the case of the bull, the angular vigour which he was given by Lawson is lost to the more rounded, humorous childish form which boosted his character for a children’s story.

However, neither the forms nor the content passed unnoticed: a bull that, on being presented in the bullring prefers smelling the flowers to fighting the bullfighter, sets itself up as a pacifist allegory.

Moreover, the attitude of Ferdinand as a young bull, following his own inclinations rather than locking horns with the other bulls, vindicates the right to be different. And it is probably for this message that we are still talking about him today.

And so it is that we come to the version by W. Klemke (Edition Holz, Berlin, 1966), a versatile German artist with a great interest in book design, who faced up to his joint projects in such a way as to achieve “the necessary ingredients to carry out the author’s intentions”.

In this sense, Ferdinando el toro [Ferdinand The Bull] is a hardback book where the front and back cover form part of the same picture, with heavy

Las ilustraciones siguen respondiendo a las posibilidades plásticas del texto, que Werner dibuja y pinta con ceras de colores. Las composiciones rinden tributo a las de Lawson en el uso de los espacios en blanco pero, debido al color, sin el efecto de “espacios en positivo y en negativo” del original. Algunas de las formas nos recuerdan a dibujos de Picasso y todas gozan de un estilo espontáneo, a modo de apuntes del natural, aunque puedan ser muy elaboradas. Esto, junto con la corta gama de colores utilizados crea una atmósfera infantil y divertida que vuelve a poner a la forma un poco por delante del contenido. Pero es precisamente esa atractiva y divertida forma el vehículo perfecto para hacernos llegar el mensaje por el que Ferdinando el toro sigue siendo una bandera contra la beligerancia y a favor de las opciones personales.

The compositions pay tribute to Lawson’s in the use of white spaces without the effect of the “positive and negative spaces” of the original.

Some of the shapes remind us of drawings by Picasso and all of them possess a spontaneous style, like studies from life even though they can be very elaborated. This, together with the reduced range of colours used, creates a childish and fun atmosphere which again puts form before content. But this attractive and fun format is exactly the right vehicle to transmit the message why Ferdinand The Bull is still a flag against belligerence and in favour of personal choice.

n juego de mesa (Jumanji) encontrado al azar por dos niños, Judy y Peter, se convierte, en este álbum ilustrado, en la excusa para tratar, una vez más, ese tema recurrente en la literatura de todas las épocas: los límites entre la realidad y la fantasía. Su autor, Chris van Allsburg, narra esta historia con ilustraciones en las que, el asombro ante lo fantástico, lo irreal contenido en lo real, es el elemento más recurrente.

Los gestos de los niños protagonistas, entre la sorpresa, la admiración y el temor, guían esta sugerente e inquietante narración, en la que, además, los restantes elementos gráficos presentan distintas perspectivas que añaden todavía más inquietud a la historia. En las ilustraciones, los niños protagonistas y todos los elementos que van apareciendo siempre se muestran vistos desde arriba o desde abajo, o en muchas ocasiones asomando por debajo de los muebles, lo que produce una sensación de irrealidad dentro de los espacios cotidianos.

umanji, a board game discovered by chance by two children, Judy and Peter, becomes, in this picture book, the excuse to examine once again that eternal theme in literature throughout the ages: the boundary between reality and fantasy.

Its author, Chris van Allsburg, tells this story with illustrations in which the most recurrent element is astonishment at the fantastic, the unreal contained in the real.

The expressions of the child protagonists, a mixture of surprise, admiration and fear, direct this thought-provoking and unsettling story in which moreover, the remaining graphic elements show different perspectives which add still more uneasiness to the tale. In the illustrations, the children and all the other elements which appear are always shown seen from above or below, or on many occasions looking out from under the furniture, which produces a sensation of unreality in everyday settings.

The game, as fiction, allows the adventure which changes the reality surrounding Judy and Peter; this causes the presence, within their house,

y a Peter; eso provoca la presencia, dentro de las paredes de su casa, de animales fieros e inquietantes, monzones, mosquitos gigantes, volcanes en erupción o exploradores fuera de la selva. Esa conjunción en las ilustraciones de los objetos cotidianos y de los sorprendentes, provoca una inquietud que se sugiere dentro de un sueño (cuando regresan los padres les dicen: ‘despertad niños’), pero que, al final del libro, se actualiza como inquietud real ante el encuentro del juego (que Judy y Peter han abandonado aliviados, una vez lo han finalizado) por parte de otros niños.

Jumanji supone la recreación de un constante viaje de ida y vuelta entre la fantasía y la realidad.

Pero además, parece evidente que una historia tan fantástica, con todos los elementos que insinúa Chris van Allsburg en sus ilustraciones, reclamaba ser llevada a la pantalla. La película resultante (con el mismo título que el libro), en cuyo guión al principio participó el autor, pero de la que luego se desvinculó (y que acumuló hasta nueve guionistas y siete versiones distintas del guión), extiende la historia con más personajes y situacio-

of dangerous wild animals, monsoons, giant mosquitoes, erupting volcanoes or explorers from out of the jungle. The conjunction of everyday and unusual objects in the illustrations creates a disquiet which suggests a dream (when their parents return they say, “wake up, children”) but which, at the end of the book, turns out to be the true uneasiness at the finding of the game (which Judy and Peter have abandoned with relief once they had finished it) by other children.

Jumanji involves the recreation of a constant shuttling back and forth between fantasy and reality. But additionally, it is obvious that such a fantastic story, with all the elements which Chris van Allsburg implies in his illustrations, just cries out for transfer to the screen. The resulting film (with the same title as the book), in whose screenplay the author participated at first, but which he later abandoned (and which amassed as many as nine scriptwriters and seven different versions of the script), extends the story with extra characters and supplementary situations to those which appeared in the

Al fin, la misma historia da lugar a dos creaciones bien distintas, cada una con valores diferentes: el libro de Allsburg con la belleza sugerente de las ilustraciones a grafito y con la poesía que conlleva la agitada historia; y la película (dirigida por Joe Johnston en 1995), con la acción trepidante y la explicitación de la fantasía y la imaginación, que se aproximan al espectador como la misma realidad.

In summary, the same story gives rise to two very different creations, each with different virtues: Allsburg’s book with the suggestive beauty of its pencil drawings and the poetry which the stirring story carries with it; and the film (directed by Joe Johnston in 1995) with its breakneck action and its explicit portrayal of fantasy and imagination, which come as close to the viewer as reality itself.

ing Kong es un caso peculiar de adaptación, pues no es, como en otros casos, la recreación o resumen de una obra cinematográfica. Al menos, no es solo eso. King Kong, de Anthony Browne, es un libro ilustrado cuyo texto se basa de la novelización del guión, realizada por Delos W. Lovelace antes del estreno de la película, y cuyas ilustraciones, en su mayoría, toman como modelo la versión cinematográfica de 1933 dirigida por Merian C. Cooper y Ernest B. Schoedsack.

En cuanto al texto, podemos leer en este libro escenas que no encontraremos en la película, como el despertar de Ann en el barco, que sí están en el texto de Lovelace. También hay secuencias, como la del rapto de Ann, o las pruebas de cámara en el barco que se dirige a la isla, que respetan el orden de la novela, y no el de la película.

En cuanto a las ilustraciones, las hay de tres tipos, por un lado, las más anodinas para el lector que no haya visto la película: los fotogramas convertidos en dibujo que encontramos, por ejemplo, en las páginas 24 y 25. Por otro lado, tenemos aquellas ilustraciones que Anthony Browne ha

ing Kong is a strange example of an adaptation as it is not, as in other cases, the recreation or the summary of a cinematic work. At least, it is not merely this. King Kong, by Anthony Browne is a picture book whose text is based on the novelisation of the script, produced by Delos W. Lovelace before the debut of the film, and the majority of whose illustrations take the film version, directed by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, as their model. In terms of the text, this book offers us scenes which we won’t find in the film, for example, the awakening of Ann in the boat, but which are in Lovelace’s text. There are also sequences, such as the kidnapping of Ann, or the camera tests in the boat going to the island, which respect the order of the novel but not that of the film.

In terms of the illustrations there are three types.

Firstly the dullest ones for the reader who has not seen the film: stills converted into pictures such as those we find on pages 24 and 25. Secondly, there are those pictures created by Anthony Browne from the novel, either because they don’t exist in the film or because he wished to give a different twist to the

Y por ultimo –quizá las más interesantes para quien haya visto la película–, tenemos aquellas ilustraciones en las que Browne parte de un fotograma e incorpora elementos de su propia cosecha para hacer un guiño al lector o añadir información. La más divertida es la de la página 17, donde Browne incluye una mano saliendo del abrigo colgado en la pared, en la que además encontramos un anuncio circense que presenta a Gargantúa, el gorila más grande jamás visto. La afición de Browne por este tipo de juegos se refleja en numerosos detalles –casi siempre la cara de Kong– camuflados en una flor, en una insignia, en un bordado, en las vetas de la madera... incluso en una hamburguesa.

Especialmente trágico es el final de la historia, cuando Kong es abatido por los disparos de los aviones y cae al suelo desde lo alto del Empire State, dejando antes sana y salva a Ann en la

scene (see page 79 especially). And finally – perhaps the most interesting for those who have seen the film – we have those illustrations where Browne starts from a still and incorporates elements of his own devising which tip the wink to the reader or add information. The funniest is the one on page 17 where Browne includes a hand coming out of the coat hanging on the wall and in which we also find a circus advert which presents Gargantua “the largest gorilla ever exhibited”. Browne’s predilection for this type of game is reflected in numerous details – almost always Kong’s face – hidden in a flower, a badge, in the stitching, in the grain of wood… even in a hamburger.

The end of the story is particularly tragic, when Kong is cut down by shots from the aeroplanes and falls to the ground from the top of the Empire State after leaving Ann safe and sound on the terrace roof of the building. The special effects,

Valga esto último como consideración general para todo el libro, en el que la ilustración brilla y fascina cuando se aleja de los fotogramas originales. Browne saca a relucir su arte cuando tiene libertad para imaginar, para añadir y crear.

Aunque, tratándose de él, hasta la copia de un fotograma rezuma talento. Ah, y un par de avisos para quien no recuerde la película: el primero, que Marilyn Monroe no actúa en ella, por más que Browne caracterice en muchas de las ilustraciones con sus rasgos a Ann Darrow, la mujer protagonista, la Bella. Y el segundo, que al Kong de 1933 no hubo ningún valiente que se atreviera a ponerle una corona en la cabeza.

although excellent for their time, don’t allow the emotional charge which Anthony Browne has given to the final scenes. The sorrowful expression of the monster and the sadness at his realisation of the impossibility of his love are infinitely better expounded by Browne’s pen.

This last serves well as a general evaluation of the whole book in which the illustrations shine and fascinate when they distance themselves from the original stills. Browne shows off his art when he has the freedom to imagine, add and create.

Although, seeing as it is Browne, even a copy of a still oozes talent. Ah, a couple of warnings for those who don’t remember the film: firstly that Marilyn Monroe wasn’t in it, however much Browne gives Ann Darrow (the true protagonist, the Beauty) her features in many of the illustrations; and secondly that there was no brave person who dared put a crown on the head of the 1933 Kong.

ergi Sánchez, crítico de cine, señala como característica de los filmes de Jacques Tati la “acumulación de elementos narrativos en un mismo plano, a menudo imposibles de descifrar a la vez de un solo vistazo”.

Una de las diferencias entre el cine y el álbum (narración gráfica de imágenes estáticas) es que el cine impone el ritmo de “lectura”. Cuando visionamos un film no podemos detenernos, ni retroceder, para descifrar con detenimiento los signos visuales. El álbum, sin embargo, permite el paseo por las imágenes, es el lector quien decide el orden y ritmo de lectura. Esta propiedad se acentúa en los álbumes sin palabras, ya que, al no haber texto, la libertad de lectura es mayor.

Le jacquot de Monsieur Hulot es un álbum sin palabras –como los filmes del personaje en que se basa–, donde, como decía el crítico, son muchos los elementos narrativos que se acumulan en sus páginas, imposibles de descifrar de un solo vistazo. En este caso, la dificultad no radica en la incapacidad de poder atenderlos, ésta vendría dada por el posible desconocimiento de los referentes que aparecen.

ergi Sánchez, the film critic, pointed out the “accumulation of narrative elements in the same shot, often impossible to decipher at one time in one look” as a characteristic of Jacques Tati’s films.

One of the differences between the film and the book (a graphic narration of still images) is that the cinema imposes the pace of “reading”.

When we watch a film we cannot stop or turn back a few pages to decipher the visual signals carefully. The book, nevertheless, allows the reader to take a walk through the pages deciding the order and rhythm of reading. This property is accentuated in books with no text as the lack of text gives greater freedom to the reader.

Le jacquot de Monsieur Hulot is a book with no words – just like the films of the character on which it is based – where, as the critic said, many narrative elements pile up in its pages and which are impossible to decipher in one glance. In this case, the difficulty does not have its roots in our incapacity to attend to them but arises from our possible ignorance of the references which appear.

Esta obra presenta múltiples niveles de lectura, ya que será leída de modo muy diverso si se conocen o no las referencias. Los niños que leyeron el libro antes y después de ver Mon Oncle (1958) subrayaron que, conociendo el film, la lectura era mucho más divertida. Reconocer el sobreático en el que vive Monsieur Hulot, el protagonista, o su bicicleta motorizada; hallar el perro de los señores Arpel entre los chuchos que hurgan en la basura, o a los niños traviesos, que con sus silbidos provocan que los transeúntes choquen contra una farola; identificar la fuente averiada en forma de delfín, o comprender la alusión a las mangueras; descubrir al cuñado de Hulot conversando con el barrendero remoloneante, o localizar el Chevrolet verdi-rosa; ver el choque de unos automóviles, las huellas de pisadas blancas de pintura, o comprobar que el nombre del café Chez Margot es el mismo que en el film, consiguen una lectura más competente y por tanto, más satisfactoria. Y éstas son solo las alusiones a Mon Oncle, no vamos a desvelar aquí las de

otros filmes del director, ni otros referentes televisivos o del mundo del cómic.

Merveille ha realizado un espléndido homenaje a las obras de Tati. Los dos autores presentan gags visuales en los que prevalecen la mímica y el gesto, generando una comicidad poética a partir del desorden del entorno que produce el paso del protagonista.

Aunque en el libro se pierde el andar propio del extravagante Hulot, al que reconocemos fácilmente por sus característicos atributos, sigue siendo un hombre de espíritu libre, bondadoso, pero algo patoso, que provoca estragos allí por donde pasa.

Este álbum, que se autodefine grand-écran, usa un lenguaje cinematográfico. Se trata de un road book que transcurre por París con un largo planosecuencia donde los gags logran movimiento ayudados de la imagen sorpresa que aparece al desplegar las páginas. Le jacquout de Monsieur Hulot es el rodaje de un film, es también un álbum-cine que invita a recuperar o descubrir la filmografía de Tati. Los niños de diez años a los que consultamos, así lo recomiendan.

This work can be read at many different levels depending on the level of awareness of the references. Children who read the book before and after seeing Mon Oncle (1958) underlined that reading the book was much more fun after having seeing the film. Recognising the attic where the protagonist Monsieur Hulot lives or his motorised bicycle; finding the Arpel’s dog amongst the mongrels which poke about amid the rubbish or discovering the naughty boys who make the passers-by crash into a street light with their whistling; identifying the broken down fountain in the shape of a dolphin or understanding the allusion to hosepipes; discovering Hulot’s brother-in-law talking to the shirking street cleaner or locating the greenypink Chevrolet; seeing some car’s crash, the footprints of white paint or confirming that the name of the café Chez Margot is the same as in the film, they read more competently and therefore enjoy it more. These allusions are only those referring to Mon Oncle and we are not going to reveal here allusions to the director’s

other films, nor references to television or to the world of the comic.

Merveille has produced a splendid homage to Tati’s works. The two authors provide visual gags in which mime and gesture are prevalent, generating a poetic comedy from the chaotic disorder which the passing of the protagonist produces.

Although in the book the idiosyncratic walk of the eccentric Hulot himself (easily recognised by his characteristic attributes) is missing, he is still a free-spirited man, kind but somewhat clumsy who causes havoc wherever he goes.

This book, which defines itself as grand-écran, uses cinematographic language. It’s a road book which takes place in Paris with a long sequence of shots where the gags achieve movement helped by the surprising image which appears when the pages are folded out. Le jacquot de Monsieur Hulot is the filming of the movie, it’s also a film-book which invites us to discover or rediscover Tati’s filmography. The ten-year olds we consulted recommend it as that.

Como muchos cuentos tradicionales o maravillosos, Los tres bandidos comienza con la famosa fórmula: «Había una vez», lo cual sitúa al lector lejos de la realidad, próximo al terreno de la fantasía y, por tanto, «a salvo» de lo que ahí pueda ocurrir porque había «tres feroces bandidos».

ntes de eso, en la cubierta, ya hemos podido ver a los tres personajes vestidos de negro, sobre un fondo azul oscuro. Estos colores, como el resto de decisiones que ha tomado el creador, han sido cuidadosamente pensados y elegidos entre una extensa gama disponible. Con el negro de sus capas y sombreros, el autor presenta a los malos, a los bandidos; el azul oscuro habla de su hora: la noche, el momento en que estos llevan a cabo sus fechorías. Tanto en la cubierta como en la primera doble página, diría que la selección es muy adecuada, en el sentido de que es coherente con la historia que está narrando. Sería paradójico, y hasta contradictorio, que el cuento hubiera sido ambientado de día, pues los robos no se comenten a esas horas, normalmente; o que la ropa de los bandidos fuera de colores chillones, que no pasan desapercibidos, como necesitan, y que no se asocian con el mal.

Hay otros elementos que aproximan este álbum a los cuentos maravillosos. Por ejemplo, el hecho de que los bandidos sean tres, un número profusamente utilizado en este género (como en el cuento de las

As many traditional or fantastic tales do, Los tres bandidos [The Three Robbers] starts with the famous formula: “Once upon a time”, which places the reader far from reality, close to the land of fantasy and therefore “safe” from what might happen because there were “three fierce robbers”

efore this, on the cover, we have already seen the three characters, dressed in black, on a dark blue background. These colours, like the other decisions the author has made, have been carefully considered and chosen from a wide range of possibilities. With the black of their capes and hats, the author presents the baddies, the robbers; and the dark blue speaks of their time, the night, the moment when they carry out their misdeeds. For the cover as for the first double page one would say that the choice is perfectly adequate en the sense that it is coherent with the story that is being told. It would be paradoxical and even contradictory if the story were to take place in the daytime as robberies are not normally committed then or that the robber’s clothes were in gaudy colours which don’t go unnoticed, as they need to go and that are not associated with evil.

There are other elements which bring this book close to stories of magic. For example, the fact that there are three robbers, a number used profusely in this type of story (the story of the

tres plumas o en los tres cerditos); también es típico que los personajes carezcan de características identificativas o calificativas; por regla general son iguales, sin distinción. Esto, sin embargo, en esta doble página se cumple solo en uno de los códigos de que consta el álbum: en el textual; pues en la ilustración, los bandidos son diferentes: a uno se le ve la boca y la nariz; a otro, un ojo; y al tercero, solo los dos ojos.

Más adelante, aparecen sus armas, pero resulta que no son tales, pues encontramos un fuelle lleno de pimienta, por ejemplo, y todas ellas son de colores vivísimos, hasta el punto de que podrían simular juguetes u objetos de cotillón.

Vemos, pues, que el autor subvierte algunos de los elementos que conforman los cuentos maravillosos. Pero, además, introduce un elemento discordante: la ambigüedad. Los tres bandidos un día dejan de ser malos para convertirse en buenos (abandonan el robo y emplean su botín en el cuidado de niños abandonados); y, por otra parte, los niños que los bandidos han recogido visten de la misma manera que ellos, pero en color rojo, en lugar de negro, lo cual no sabemos qué significa.

Siguiendo a Bruno Bettelheim (Psicoanálisis de los cuentos de hadas. Barcelona, Crítica, 1977, pág. 15): «Las ambigüedades no deben plantearse hasta que no se haya establecido una personalidad relativamente firme sobre la base de identificaciones positivas […]

Las polarizaciones de los cuentos de hadas proporcionan esta decisión básica sobre la que se constituirá todo el desarrollo posterior de la personalidad».

Creo que este álbum presenta muchos valores: la calidad de las ilustraciones (por la variedad de perspectivas, por la selección de colores, etc.), la adecuación tanto de las ilustraciones como del texto a la edad de los lectores, sin embargo, al saltarse las reglas del género le priva también de todo su valor, que es el de contribuir a la consecución de nuestra necesidad más urgente y difícil: la de encontrar un significado a nuestras vidas. Que no es poco.

three feathers or the three little pigs); it is also typical that the three characters lack identifying characteristics or attributes, as a general rule they are all the exactly the same. Nevertheless, on this double page only one of the aspects of this book, the textual, conforms to the general rule. In the illustration the robbers are different: we can see the mouth and nose of one of them, an eye of another and both eyes of the third.

Later, their weapons appear, but it turns out that they are not weapons for we find some bellows full of pepper, for example and all of them are in bright colours such that they could even be toys or the contents of a New Year’s Eve party bag.

We have seen, then, that the author subverts some of the elements which make up a typical magic story. But, in addition, he introduces a discordant element, ambiguity. One day the three robbers stop being bad and become goodies (they stop robbing and use their booty looking after abandoned children): and on the other hand the children rescued by the robbers dress in the same manner as the robbers, but in

red instead of black, the significance of which we do not know.

In the words of Bruno Bettelheim (Psicoanálisis de los cuentos de hadas. Barcelona, Crítica, 1977, p. 15), “Ambiguities should not be raised until a relatively stable personality has been established on the basis of positive identifications […]. The polarisation in fairy tales provides this basic decision on how the subsequent personality will evolve].

I think that this book has many qualities: the excellence of the illustrations (for their varied perspectives, the choice of colours, etc.), the suitability of the illustrations and text for the agegroup, nevertheless breaking all the rules of the genre robs it of all its complete worth which is to contribute to our most urgent and difficult need, that of finding a meaning for our lives. And that is no small thing.

igámoslo de entrada: este libro miente. Trata de hacernos creer que habla de un elefante que se inventa mundos como quien menea la trompa. Falso.

En realidad la excelencia se agazapa en sus páginas y, si se nos ocurre distraernos, se nos sube a la joroba (es un decir).

Super 8 es un libro sobre el arte de crear; un ensayo sobre eso que se nos agolpa en la cabeza y que llamamos imaginación; un recordatorio del poder de las asociaciones entre imagen e ideas. No es casualidad que el elefante sea una cámara de super-ocho (o que la cámara de super-ocho sea un elefante) o que el ocho (el símbolo del infinito) nos golpee durante todo el libro como una lluvia de meteoritos.

Pero vayamos por partes: la cámara de super-ocho con trompa pasa por ser una metáfora (poco camuflada y hasta poco metáfora si nos ponemos finos) de la fuerza del séptimo arte a la hora de sacarse universos de la manga. No solo eso, sabedor el autor de que la cámara de súper-ocho es una suerte de génesis para cualquiera que haya aspirado alguna vez a ser cineasta, él la perfila como la lámpara de Aladino de donde los genios salen a discreción. No hay aquí

et’s make it clear from the beginning: this book lies. It tries to make us believe that it is about an elephant who invents worlds as easily as shaking his trunk. Not true. In reality, excellence crouches down in the pages and if we even think of being distracted for a moment it will give us the hump (it’s a saying).

Super 8 is a book about the art of creation; an essay on that which bangs on our head and which we call imagination; a reminder of the power of the associations between image and ideas. It is not a coincidence that the elephant is a Super 8 camera (or that the Super 8 camera is an elephant) or that the 8 (the symbol for infinity) strikes us throughout the book like a meteor shower. But let’s proceed a bit at a time: the Super 8 camera with a trunk could be taken as a metaphor (lightly disguised and really not much of a metaphor if we get finicky about it) of the power of the seventh art when it comes to pulling universes from a hat. Not only that, the author, knowing only too well that the Super 8 camera is God’s gift for anyone who has ever dreamt of becoming a film maker, describes it as an Aladdin’s Lamp from which genies emerge at will.

Y menos relevante es en definitiva, ya que toda sugestión cinematográfica pierde terreno delante de los ojos del esperado lector niño, delante del cual, la actividad cosmogónica de Monsieur Otto se manifiesta en su aplastante lógica guiada en un primer momento por las formas y luego por un festival fantástico donde el juego se extiende al lenguaje y a la curiosa similitud entre las palabras ocho y noche en gran parte de los idiomas indoeuropeos.

En 2005, la mente felizmente dual de Olivier Douzou se sacó de la manga este elefante prestidigitador destinado a abrir bocas en dosis masivas ya que, si no fuera por la llamada del organismo a eso que llamamos comúnmente “dormir” (y en este sentido este libro se ubica a la perfección en el clásico cuento de buenas noches aunque con una estética y una dinámica renovadas) la maravilla nunca se acabaría (mais ce n’est pas fini…). En 2006, el mismo autor parió Le nez, perdón, Le dez, otro cuento en el que al juego, una vez más sonoro y visual, se le

And it really is less relevant because all cinematographic suggestions lose ground in the eyes of the expected child reader, before whom the cosmogonic activity of Monsieur Otto shows itself in its crushing logic guided at first by shapes and later by a fantastic festival where the game is extended to language and to the curious similarity between the words “eight” and “night” in most of the IndoEuropean languages.

In 2005, Olivier Douzou’s happily dual mind conjured up this juggling elephant destined to leave thousands open-mouthed because if it were not for the call of our bodies to what we commonly call “sleep” (and in this sense the book can perfectly be established as a classic bedtime story but with a new aesthetic and dynamic) the marvels would never cease (mais ce n’est pas fini…). In 2006, the same author produced The Nose, sorry The Dose, another story in which a game is given protagonism, once again in both sound and vision. It could be

Una y otra vez se desprende de los libros de Olivier Douzou el placer del disparate, esa delirante sensación de libertad que otorga la capacidad de inventar. Ya saben, eso que hacen los artistas y genios, y que algunos llaman libre asociación.

work, but in The Nose, Douzou is left with the holes of the eight applied not to a creative trunk, but to a blocked-up nose in search of the great handkerchief (or of happiness if we want to think in metaphors again). On the way it meets nostrils of all kinds including a button with airs… It’s so convinced it’s a nose (can the evidence of the shape lie or are we exactly what we look like?) that it thinks it’s caught a cold.

Time and time again the pleasure of the absurd emanates from Olivier Douzou’s books, that delirious sensation of freedom which is conferred by the ability to invent. You know, those things artists and geniuses do which some call free association.

ierde un ogro su identidad al convertirse en un personaje bondadoso, amable, bienhablado? ¿Es necesario humanizarlo? Las respuestas del ¡Shrek! (1990) de William Steig y del Shrek (2001) de V. Jenson y A. Adamson son divergentes y tratan de manera distinta la naturaleza del ogro.

En la obra de Steig, Shrek es un ogro arquetípico, convertido en joven héroe que comienza a crecer al ser arrojado de la casa familiar. Durante su aprendizaje, asusta a humanos, a seres fabulosos, a brujas; pedorrea, eructa, hiede, llamea, humea, aterroriza; no come niños, pero son su pesadilla. Una bruja le vaticina el encuentro con un ayudante –el asno– y el casamiento con una princesa horrible.

Para conseguirlo, deberá superar una serie de pruebas: asustar, robar, vencer a la Naturaleza, al dragón, al caballero, batirse en duelo poético con su amada –ambos divertidísimos versificadores–; en el camino, sólo un momento de terror al contemplarse en la muchedumbre reflejada en los espejos del palacio sin reconocerse, hasta entender que se trata de él mismo y aceptarse.

¡Shrek!

oes an ogre lose his identity on turning into a kind, friendly, well-spoken character? Is it necessary to humanise him? The answers given by Shrek! (1990) by William Steig and Shrek (2001) by V. Jenson and A. Adamson are very different and they deal differently with the nature of the ogre.

In Steig’s work, Shrek is an archetypical ogre, changed into a young hero who starts to grow when thrown out of the family home. During his apprenticeship he frightens humans, fabled beasts and witches. He farts, burps, stinks, flames, smokes and terrorises; he doesn’t eat children but they are his nightmare. A witch prophesies his meeting with an assistant, the donkey, and his marriage to a horrible princess. In order to attain this, he will have to pass a series of tests: frighten, rob, defeat Nature, the dragon, the horseman, fight his lover in a poetry duel (both of them are extremely funny versifiers); on the way there is only one moment of terror when he sees himself in the crowd reflected in the mirrors of the palace without recognising himself, until he finally understands that it is him and to accept himself.

La elección del ogro arquetípico por parte de Steig muestra su interés por contar la historia de un personaje que vive al margen de la sociedad y no la de un personaje que cambia su forma de ser para integrarse en ella. Shrek asume su condición de ogro malvado y es feliz en un mundo lleno de seres a los que asusta, sin que ello suponga no poder sucumbir a una horripilante princesa y a una boda –oficiada por un reptil y con un final antológico “y vivieron para siempre hediondamente”. A Shrek lo definen sus acciones, tanto en los textos como en las ilustraciones, y su manera de hablar –lo que dice y cómo lo dice–; lo mismo ocurre con su princesa que aparece al final de la historia. Shrek es un personaje bien construido.

La historia se caracteriza por el tono oral que atrae la atención del oyente o lector mediante la utilización de rimas y de continuos diálogos en prosa y en verso repartidos por el texto que lo dotan de mayor dinamismo, frescura y humor. En la clásica estructura narrativa, predomina la fuerza del texto sobre la de las ilustraciones. Los dibujos

sencillos aportan pocos detalles extraordinarios, aunque resaltan el tono humorístico.

En la obra de Jenson y Adamson sólo se conserva el personaje de Shrek. Resulta interesante, pero el tratamiento de la figura del ogro es distinto. Si bien conserva Shrek algunos rasgos inherentes al arquetipo –verdoso, habita en una ciénaga…–, retrata un ogro humanizado que intenta integrarse en la sociedad de los humanos o trasladar ésta a su geografía, la ciénaga. Sus acciones más allá de lo anecdótico no lo definen como ogro y tampoco su forma de expresarse. La película es un ejercicio de intertextualidad que dirige su mirada a los niños y a los adultos, con referencias al imaginario popular de unos y a la competencia cultural de los otros.

Son dos Shrek: el transgresor aparente de la película es un humano más; frente a él, el transgresor Shrek de Steig, fiel a los principios ogrescos y con horribles palabras de amor nada tiernas a su amada.

Dos discursos, dos maneras divertidas, inteligentes, de ver la realidad con ojos de ogro.

Steig’s choice of an archetypal ogre shows his interest in telling the story of a character who lives on the margins of society and not that of a character who changes his way of being to integrate into it. Shrek accepts his status as an evil ogre and is happy in a world full of creatures that he frightens, without this supposing not being able to succumb to a horrifying princess and to a wedding officiated by a reptile and to a finale as “and they lived smelly ever after”. Shrek’s actions define him as much in the texts as in the illustrations and his way of speaking – what he says and how he says it –; the same thing happens with his princess who appears at the end of the story. Shrek is a well-constructed character.

The story is characterised by the oral tone which attracts the attention of the listener or reader by means of rhymes and continuous prose and verse dialogues spread throughout the text which give it a greater dynamism, freshness and humour.

In the classic narrative structure, the power of the text dominates that of the illustrations. The

simple pictures add few extra details although they emphasise the humorous tone.

In the work of Jenson and Adamson only the character of Shrek is retained. It’s interesting that the treatment of the ogre is different. Shrek does keep some traits inherent in his archetype – he is green, he lives in a swamp… –, he portrays a humanised ogre who attempts to integrate into human society or transfer it to his environment, the swamp. His actions beyond the anecdotal do not mark him out as an ogre and nor does his way of expressing himself. The film is an exercise in intertextuality which aims at children and adults with references to the popular imagination of the former and the cultural competence of the latter.

There are two Shreks: the apparent transgressor of the film is just another human; against him Shrek the transgressor of Steig, faithful to his ogre principles who says horrible words with nothing tender about them to his loved one.

Here we have two treatises and two fun intelligent ways to see reality through the eyes of an ogre.
