Mazzoni’s Quiet Riot

Complaints, allegations lie in the underbelly of Philly’s largest LGBT organization

ong before racial anxieties boiled in the streets of the Gayborhood this fall—before the loaded dress code policies at landmark LGBT dives like Woody’s, before video leaked of iCandy’s owner using the n-word, and before the subsequent neighborhood hearings to discuss racism in all its forms—Philly’s largest LGBT organization was reckoning with its own tensions behind closed doors.

Current and former employees accuse the organization of failing to diversify its upper management and board of directors, and say the effects can be seen in the way it handles complaints of racial insensitivity.

Mazzoni provides health care services to a diverse LGBT population, including a comprehensive clinical care for transgender persons, as well as mental health counseling, legal services, and HIV prevention.

Twelve of the Mazzoni’s 15 board members are Caucasian. Three are people or color, including Mazzoni’s board president, Jimmy Ruiz, an obstetrics and gynecology physician in Abington.

There is one African-American female on the board, and two Latino males.

There are currently no trans-identifying members of the board, although Mazzoni is in the process of recruitment.

Oh Shut Up!

Philadelphia is a city rife with corruption and crime. There’s disparity, there’s hopelessness. We rely on our elected officials and city workers to serve and protect, yet the City of Brotherly Love has a limitation on just how far that love spreads. Where others complain about these issues, these seven people have chosen instead to act.

Digital vitriol is just fine for Laura Tepper.

Since moving to the Fishtown-Kensington area almost a decade ago, she’s been threatened, has had property stolen and her car burglarized. But she’s also seen the good in many of her neighbors, the robust construction and subsequent gentrification.

As the primary moderator for the Safer Streets of Fishtown, East Kensington and Port Richmond Facebook page, she’s felt her fair share of comments from internet tough guys (and gals).

She can take it. All of it.

of old and new. The spinoff of the larger Safer Streets of Fishtown page, Tepper’s iteration— which has been up and running for just over a year—offers proof that regardless of whether residents have lived there for 30 years or three, crime impacts everyone.

“We offered this version of Safer Streets to be more inclusive,” Tepper said as she took a sip from her coffee at Franny Lou’s Cafe, situated in the heart of East Kensington. The group is very mixed between old neighbors and new, so the conversation does get into old vs. new quite frequently, but we shut it down. For us [moderators], this group isn’t about that.”

Over the past 10 years, a look at police reports shows a decrease in violent crimes in the region. Even as there has been a sizable uptick in theft, burglaries and other petty crimes. This is the main concern for both old and new who use the site to vent about everything from the rash of car break-ins to the theft of trash cans and house numbers.

“People move into the area from different parts of the city or suburbs and are appalled [as newcomers] when their car gets broken into or their bike gets stolen,” said Tepper. “These aren’t new issues, they’re just new to the community. So I think that a really big point of contention is a lot of the older residents get upset that the community is seen in a poor light because they grew up here and are proud of where they come from.

I feel a big job of Safer Streets is to educate each other and get to know our neighborhood and our neighbors.”

Tepper’s passion is intriguing. Though she’s an activist, one can’t help but wonder if there’s a little bit of nosy neighbor in her as well.

“I certainly hope people think I am,” Tepper laughed. “We are all deserving of involvement from each other to address issues in our neighborhood and inform each other and the authorities. I wanted this to feel more egalitarian, people need to know they have a voice—good or bad.”

The incessant beeping seemed to take forever.

Everyone on hand just wanted the large box truck backing into a spot at the Intercultural Behavioral Health Center (2317 S. 23rd St.) to stop moving and reveal the goods it held inside. When it came to a halt and the back gate finally lifted, jaws dropped.

More than 100 refurbished bicycles were inside ready to be wheeled into the center, all gifted by Chris Guinan, commemorating the fifth straight year he backed up a truck full of bikes ready to be distributed to anyone who could simply benefit from taking one.

For the past five years, Guinan, 51, has bought or accepted donations of gently used or worn bikes and has fixed them back to good use inside his Winchester Park home in the Far Northeast. The ones that simply aren’t salvageable are stripped for parts—to repair the next bike that comes through.

Once the bikes are in good working condition, they’re donated back to a local charity of Guinan’s choosing, which on this particular, frigid December morning this South Philly nonprofit was the one benefitting from selfless generosity.

“I didn’t go into this with any preconceived notions, one day I just turned in five bikes I had [in my garage] to a local charity and [the rest] just took on a life of its own after that,” said Guinan, a 30-year SEPTA employee, now a maintenance manager at its Overbrook transit yard. “To be frank, I just saw what those bikes did for the people that really needed them so I was just committed to do more.”

The use of the word “more” in this case is clearly understated. In those five years since Guinan delivered his first five cycles to Shriners Hospital, he’s gifted over 500 more throughout the Philadelphia region. He refuses to go nonprofit, noting that the thought honestly “scares him,” and instead does it all on his own time, using his own money and employing family and friends as a volunteer delivery service.

To ensure all bikes are legit, Guinan photographs and registers them with his local police district. In five years, only a handful of bikes have come back stolen. For the most part, after a 30-day holding period, the bicycles are wheeled off to a deserved home.

While media focus from Guinan’s efforts has centered primarily on the children who receive these bikes, it’s much more than that. Because distribution isn’t solely to needy children but adults and families, these bikes become a mode of transportation to explore their community.

They help the environment. They get people to work. They offer independence. Without anything more in return than a word of thanks.

“You know the sad part about it is that no matter how many bikes you donate, there’s this strange sense of guilt of knowing it’s never enough,” said Guinan. “There’s a value to all of this and when you see that you want to do more, but it’s never enough.”

Knocking on Death’s Door: Rosalind Pichardo

On a recent, frigid, Wednesday morning, Rosalind Pichardo spent the early hours at the Criminal Justice Center in Philadelphia with the family of a woman who was murdered in a triple homicide in 2011.

Sounds intense, but this is a typical day.

Actually, the 39-year-old Kensington native spends most of her weekdays with grieving families of homicide victims, helping them navigate the legal complications that come with losing a loved one to murder and lending an ear to listen and a shoulder to cry on. On weekends, she typically holds rallies and marches through the city with her program Operation Save our City, often marching with a casket filled with bullet shell casings, calling for an end to violence on the streets of Philadelphia.

In many cases of inner-city violence, the victim knows his killer and they are, very often, members of the same community and may have even traveled in the same social circles. Pichardo, along with volunteers know this and hope to change the “no snitching” mentality by going to the homes of suspected killers—and the homes of their family and friends—to place wanted posters in the mailboxes.

“Some people say that’s too much,” said Pichardo of Operation Save Our City’s Herculean volunteer efforts. “But it’s a reminder of what’s happening in our city. It can be nerve-wracking, a little bit, but we don’t get nervous. We can’t be.”

It’s taxing work for Pichardo, who receives no funding for her efforts and does it all while battling complex partial epilepsy, a condition that lands her in the hospital about once a month.

Nevertheless, her ailment isn’t slowing down her efforts, which are fueled from a place of experience. When she was just 16, Pichardo’s boyfriend was murdered by a man who had attacked her. In 2012, her 22-year-old brother, Alexander Martinez, was killed when he and Pichardo’s 16-yearold nephew were walking home from picking up dinner in North Philadelphia. When the pair were robbed, Martinez was shot trying to protect the teenager.

“I think it’s important for people to understand that they have a voice,” she said. “A lot of people don’t know how to get on a bullhorn and speak up... But, I want to help them get up in their own community and do it.”

When the stress becomes too much—and it does at times—Pichardo stays with friends outside of the city before returning, reinvigorated.

“You don’t need a lot of money to talk to people and make a difference. There’s so much giving you can do that doesn’t require money,” she said. “You’ve just gotta keep on going.”

With all that’s been going on in Sharswood—the launch of the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s’ $526 million dollar redevelopment project, the demolition of the Norman Blumberg high-rise projects, the planned eminent domain of more than 1,000 properties, the dislocation of hundreds of residents in the name of a neighborhood reborn—the people could use a little bit of Rasheedah Phillips.

She has something of obvious practical value for the residents of this North Philadelphia quarter: her legal expertise as the managing attorney of Community Legal Services’ Landlord-Tenant Housing Unit.

Her latest endeavor, the Community Futures Lab located at 2204 Ridge Ave., offers just one piece of who she is and what defines her. She’s an author, an artist, an “Afrofuturist,” a documentarian, and most importantly, a member of the predominantly African-American community undergoing a radical transformation.

(She lives eight blocks from the Sharswood-Blumberg site.) So when she launched the Community Futures Lab last summer, she thought she’d offer a little bit of everything.

“People walk in for different reasons,” Phillips says of the lab space, adorned with artwork and features a small library. “Sometimes they see information about different housing resources or workshops, so they ask about that. Some people bring in their issues because they don’t know where else to go.”

The lab holds a monthly series called Hous-

ing Futures, as well as more general legal workshops on topics ranging from domestic violence to criminal record expungements. Those practical offerings in turn become gateways to engage the community in art and literature-based exercises.

Phillips recently even held her first book club through the space to discuss a sci-fi novel about shared memory in a futuristic African-American community.

This is an integral, if theoretical, part of the Community Futures Lab: collecting oral histories, or what Phillips likes to call “oral futures.” With her job as a full-time attorney, Phillips relies on interns to run the lab throughout the day—not just to connect visitors to much-needed resources, but to help them document their own stories of the neighborhood.

Will there be a final narrative project to come out of the Lab at some point? What would it look like?

“It’s difficult. I want the community to have input in this and so it’s an ongoing question,” Phillips said. “The question isn’t just how do we archive this, but how to make this information accessible to the community? Even though Temple as an institution is right down the street, that doesn’t translate into practical access.”

Firing Back: Scott Charles Few people in this city know the realities of gun violence as well as Scott Charles. As the trauma outreach coordinator for Temple University Hospital in North Philadelphia, Charles sees nearly every victim of gun violence that comes through the door.

“This is the leading cause of death for a substantial number of people who live in our neighborhoods, especially if they are African-American men,” Charles said during a recent interview with PW. Charles, 49, has made combatting gun violence the focus of his life. He runs several programs focused specifically on the topic. There’s Cradle to the Grave, a program intended to show public school students the realities of gun violence; Turning Point, the program in which Charles works with gun violence victims to change their attitudes about guns and violence and Fighting Chance, a program he brings to communities that he says is basically “field medicine” to teach local residents tactics that could save a gunshot victim’s life. In addition, he regularly distributes gun locks freely throughout the city, in an effort to prevent accidental shooting.

“I get to meet every gunshot victim that comes through those doors,” he said, referencing Turning Point. “What begins with ‘don’t let me die’ turns back into [the same victim playing] tough again because they have no other options...We

have to break this cycle.”

A humble Charles notes that he wouldn’t be able to do his work without the support from Dr. Amy Goldberg, Temple University Hospital’s chief of trauma and surgical critical care.

When he was five-years-old, his brother was shot, and thankfully survived. At the age of 10, his sister used a handgun to commit suicide. When he was 14, in Northern California, Charles said he was given a gun by the owner of the grocery store he worked at. The handgun, with its serial numbers filed off, was handed to him, no questions asked, to “protect himself.”

At 18, one of his best friends was shot and killed.

“I get criticized for talking to kids in realistic terms about what guns do,” he said. “But, I’ve always fought an uphill battle against the culture that looks at gun violence as a good thing...

The gun industry is Goliath and I’m David, but, let me be clear, I’m not alone.”

Sanctuary Maker: Adan Mairena Rev. Adan Mairena lives the Jesuswas-a-refugee life.

Born in Honduras and raised in various U.S. cities, Mairena has been at the helm of West Kensington Ministries since 2005.

But at no point have the lines been clearer between his daily ministry and his ongoing political activism. In the last few years, he has been arrested twice for civil disobedience at immigration protests. More notably, in 2014, he turned the church into a sanctuary for Angela Navarro, an undocumented Honduran immigrant wanted for deportation by federal authorities.

The incident garnered international attention.

“When I said we’re going to do this,” Mairena recalls, “the chair of my board asked me ‘Are you willing to lose your job? Are we willing to lose the ministry?’ And I said, ‘heck, we follow this guy who got nailed to a cross and died.

This is nothing compared to that.’”

hosts two regular Narcotics Anonymous groups. There are musical performances—from weekly open mic nights to touring grindcore bands to local Puerto Rican acts. His fundraising efforts aided in the construction of a recording studio inside the parish hall. But his biggest ambitions are for the church’s basement, in which Mairena is looking to expand into a trade-skill training workshop for neighborhood youth; efforts have already started with the fully functional silk-screen studio.

“As a pastor I have to work with everybody and do the right thing, and support those who are going to best impact the lives of our residents. Jesus fed people. He had a hunger-advocacy program. Jesus healed people, so he was about healthcare for all.”

Scrappy.

It’s the only word that comes to mind for Arielle Brousse when she describes the fully volunteer-run Spruce Foundation. It’s also the perfect adjective for Brousse who sits as a member on Spruce’s board of directors.

“I’d say we’re scrappy,” says Brousse of the nonprofit which aides in teaching millennials how to become the next-generation of philanthropists through grant writing, community activism and more. “We’re an organization that’s small but mighty; not all of us have nonprofit or board volunteer experience, but we share our skills, and we learn as we go.”

Sprucing up Philanthropy: Arielle Brousse

A philanthropist in her own right, Brousse notes that she and others at Spruce are trying to buck the belief that generosity on a mass scale is only for the old and wealthy.

“Millennials are told over and over again that their generation is lazy and selfish, says Brousse. “We’re not only getting them involved in their communities, we’re showing them that they, too, are philanthropists, and we’re laying the groundwork for future service.

We make grants to area nonprofits on the cusp of something big, and those grants can be transformative to the organizations that are on the ground supporting Philly’s kids. So we are making things happen in real time. But we’re also playing a long game.”

She also helped found “Writing A Life,” a monthly therapeutic writing workshop for patients of the Abramson Cancer Center.”

Ultimately, Brousse wants to make activism accessible for everyone. Her Tiny Letter (tinyletter.com/thewordunheard) sends out a daily email the entire month of December suggesting specific areas of focus and concrete action steps.

Why? “Because even a fiery-hearted little ragebeast like me believes it’s not great to be angry all the time.”

According to one longtime employee, who asked not to be identified for professional reasons, progress has been stunted to create more representation at the organization’s highest reaches. “[Shein] is an almost 70-year-old lesbian who has headed this agency well for a long time,” the employee said.

“She is a strong leader and she deserves a lot of credit, but on this issue, especially in Philadelphia and in the current racial environment, she has really missed the mark.”

Shein said people of color represent 45 percent of Mazzoni’s staff of 139 full-timers, and 32 percent of its general management. Many Mazzoni Center employees have worked their way up the ranks from case managers into senior management positions, she noted. But there are racial blind spots that Mazzoni said she still is looking to address.

“Is racism and discrimination part of the American life, and by that token part of our life? Yes it is. Do we need to work on being more open? Yes, we need to,” Shein said. “We live in a society where the default is white, male privilege. As somebody who came from a different country and a different culture and a different religion—even though I walk around the street with my white face—I still know what it means to be other.”

In the last year, several incidents have rankled staff members of color.

After the Pulse nightclub massacre in June, upper management extended little outreach to its LGBT staff members of color who were distraught by bloodshed, according to four separate Mazzoni staffers. To address the silence, Abdul-Aliy Muhammad, a former employee at Mazzoni and a member of the Black & Brown Workers Collective, disrupted a staff meeting to read the names of the Orlando victims.

“Mazzoni bills itself as the largest LGBT organization in the region, so I was devastated on their silence,” Muhammad said. “No one checked in on any of the staff about what was happening to the point that I walked around checking in on people myself.

It didn’t feel right.”

However, Muhammad, who is African American, said that upper management was quick to confront accusations that he had been dealing drugs and orchestrating sex-for-pay at one of Mazzoni’s facilities. The accusations

about whether Weiss should distance himself from the facility. Mazzoni’s board held a meeting in November to discuss issues in the Gayborhood.

Ruiz, the board president, told PW that “members stressed the fact that [Weiss] has been an effective, active, and a productive member of the board” and that he was “ acting in good faith to address these issues” at Woody’s.

For his part, Weiss has committed to host a neighborhood meeting on racism at his nightclub. He and his brother Billy Weiss, who co-owns the nightclub, are also hiring new security staff, providing more training, and will be reviewing all of their internal policies.

Around the same time, Mazzoni sent a memo to its community reaffirming its commitment to inclusion in all of its forms. That message, however, came off as toothless to many members of the community, including some in LGBT organizations geared toward minorities.

“When we talk about race, what we’re really challenging is systemic racism, which means looking into the power structures and seeing that the majority of your board of directors is all white, or the majority of your executive director staff is all white, and then saying ‘this is an issue,’ especially in city as diverse as Philadelphia,” said Nikki Lopez, executive director of GALAEI, the city’s only queer Latino social justice organization.

For comparison, the 18-person board of directors at Philly FIGHT contains five Caucasian, 11 AfricanAmerican, and two Latino members, the majority of which are patients at one of the organization’s health centers. At the William Way LGBT Community Center, 10 board members identify as Caucasian, two as AfricanAmerican, two as Asian/Pacific Islander, and one as Latina/Native-American, according to the center’s CEO, Chris Bartlett.

Lack of diversity at the board level is hardly exclusive to Mazzoni. But some critics say that there should be a higher expectation of progress among the city’s LGBT institutions. Carson Lee, director of COLOURS, an organization that primarily serves the AfricanAmerican LGBT community in Philly, said he is happy that pressure to diversify is being put on predominantly white LGBT organizations.

“The reality is there is a lot of collegial nepotism that happens within LGBT organizations in which POC [people of color] are often not in the position to benefit from,” Carson wrote in an email. “This dynamic happens across the country and Philadelphia is no different.”

“They just accused me of being a drug dealer and running a prostitution ring, offered no apology, and then a month later they put me on the cover of their annual report,” Muhammad said.

Shein declined to comment on incidents with individual employees, past or present.

“Employees who either left or were let go from the organization, they can say whatever they want,” Shein said. “I can not say much because of personnel restrictions, and I will not talk about personnel restrictions in public.”

Samantha Dato, who worked at Mazzoni for four-and-a-half years before she was dismissed for insubordination, is one of 16 employees who have either left or been fired in the last three months. Dato said that promises of racial sensitivity training and opportunities for people of color in higher leadership roles were numerous, but never fulfilled.

“Mazzoni has a great reach on a community that needs the most help,” Dato, who is a trans-woman of color, said of the clinic’s work. “I don’t want to take Mazzoni down, but I would like their practices to be more polished and up to date.”

Shein said Mazzoni will hold longpromised diversity training for its employees in January. Moreover, all-staff meetings, a common venue to air grievances, will be held more frequently, she said. Management is also trying to create swifter internal communications to address problems in the future, as well as improve its hiring processes across different departments.

“We’ve been talking to staff and asking them, ‘What do you want us to do?’ ” Shein said. “And since then we’ve had a very intense and unfortunately very prolonged conversation because it involves a lot of staff members who want to be involved.”

Rue Landau, executive director Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, said that one employment case was filed against Mazzoni, which dated back to 2013.

The issues surrounding diversity and racial sensitivity bubbled to the surface in September, when the center found itself caught in the uproar over a new dress code at Woody’s Bar, the popular gay nightclub on S. 13th Street. Some patrons blasted the policy as “covertly racist” after they were denied entry to the club for wearing urban sportswear that was previously allowed in the club, according to Philadelphia Magazine.

With faces of doom, they go door-to-door, shivering and singing, hoping for a glass of cheer to take away their utter despair.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been this way in the big city since the election of Donald Trump, aka Ebenezer YUGE! Bands of grief-stricken grown men and women, stunned that a hateful miser is their president-elect, wandering aimlessly, wondering when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be rounded up and deported.

Who can stand to see them cry?

Whereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s your charity?

Cheer them up with a big bowl of spiked holiday punchâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;what our great, great grandparents wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve called wassail.

Until World War I, it was the custom throughout Europe and America for villagers to troop door-to-door, banging drums, singing and trading good wishes. The revelers carried cups decorated with ribbons, expecting them to be ďŹ lled with a warming brew.

The tradition eventually died, partly because the wassailers had become a public nuisance. In New England, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t unheard of for groups of caroling hoodlums to vandalize houses that had closed their doors.

The contents of that old wassail bowl live on, however, in spicy winter warmers that are a familiar part of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s holiday beer scene. Sip a glass of, say, cinnamon-ďŹ&#x201A;avored Sly Fox Christmas Ale, and you can tasteâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and hearâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the faint echoes of wassails from long ago.

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a basic wassail recipe, taken from my book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Christmas Beerâ&#x20AC;?â&#x20AC;&#x201D;it makes enough for a good-size party.

An IPA will give the punch a pleasingly bitter bite. A nice lager (perhaps a bock) will be sweeter.

1. Bake 12 small apples in a shallow pan at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.

2. Pour 3 bottles of beer into a large stock pot, and add 1 cup brown sugar, 4 cinnamon sticks, 2 teaspoons whole cloves, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 8 whole allspice, a pinch of nutmeg and two strips of orange peel. Simmer for 10 minutes.

3. Add 6 more bottles of beer plus 4 cups of cream sherry.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 5 more minutes.

4. Pour into a punch bowl with the apples and 3 more bottles of beer (or keep warm in a crock pot).

5. Ladle into mugs.

Homeless Memorial Day

F

or the past two decades, Philadelphians have come together at the beginning of winter to recognize the homeless people who have passed away over the course of the year. Homeless Memorial Day is commemorated in more than 150 locations across the country. This year’s ceremony pays respect to all the homeless men and women who have passed away and serves as a rally call for action to end homelessness.

Homeless outreach organizations in Philadelphia engage more than 5,500 individuals living on the street, abandoned buildings, and other uninhabitable spaces. It has been reported in Philadelphia alone that 12,000 people, including families, require access to shelter each year.

“We have made much progress in Philadelphia,” said Sister Mary Scullion, one of the organizers of the event. “But homelessness persists, and we cannot become complacent. We must still open our eyes and truly see our sisters and brothers who experience homelessness.”

The memorial service will include reflections by Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell, various religious leaders, and friends and relatives of those who knew the deceased. The event will culminate with the reading of the nearly 200 names of those who have passed.

But if the problem was resolved in a way that left you feeling neglected, insecure, and frustrated, it wasn’t resolved and it constitutes a much bigger threat to your relationship than that ex-intern.

’m having an issue with my boyfriend, and I don’t know if I am the crazy, paranoid, controlling party here. We have been together for more than a year and a half. We had troubles early on because he has a low sex drive. It made me very insecure, and I think that’s why, at the time, I became extremely jealous of his friendship with his very attractive intern. I fully owned up to my irrational jealousy and decided on my own that it was my responsibility to overcome that.

Around 8:30 on Tuesday, he texted me and asked how studying was going, and I asked him again what his plans were. He told me he was going to meet an “old coworker” at a bar for birthday drinks. Then, around 11:30 when I got in bed to relax, I saw on my Instagram feed that his old intern posted a photo of her birthday party at the bar.

I became extremely upset, because instead of being up front and saying he was meeting HER for her birthday, he was intentionally ambiguous. I confronted him when he got home, and he admitted to being ambiguous to avoid a “freakout.” I told him that if he’d been up front with me, I would have been jealous but I would have also been mindful of my toxic feelings and not projected them onto him. I told him that as a result of how he handled it, I feel worse, I feel lied to, and I feel insecure. He acted like I was being ridiculous. He insisted it was a last-minute invite and he didn’t want to cause any drama. We went to sleep, and I woke up feeling pretty much over it. But when he got into the shower, I looked at his phone and saw that she had actually invited him on Monday afternoon. So he lied to me. I am not upset with him for getting drinks with her—most of his friends are female and I NEVER feel jealous about them. I have a weird tic about this girl, though, and I’ve owned up to it. I don’t want to

control him, but I feel like I can’t trust him now. Up until now, I’ve never once suspected him of being dishonest. —Am I Crazy?
