Cinedelphia Returns
I
f you’re at all into movies you’ve probably at least heard Philly’s annual Cinedelphia Film Festival (CFF), running from April 7-23, is returning for its fourth year. This year is set to be a fun time at the Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art (a place where acclaimed film director David Lynch was once a student). The film fest, which kicks off Thursday, is a nirvana for Philly’s most alternative, odd and rare films. Strange, unusual and creative are just a few words that can describe this festival. It’s something so ambitious and bizarre that it demands as much awareness as any other film fest in Philly. If you’re a fan of B-movies, cult films, drive-ins and video rental era cinema, then this is the event for you. Thirty eccentric and offbeat films will be presented this year. As a lover of alternative film, I’m itching to enjoy the unique lineup of movies. CFF plays some of the créme de la créme of work coming out of Philly’s cinema scene, as well acknowledging some classic cult works. I’d definitely recommend taking a look at these:
“OFFBEAT AND
EXUBERANT. A HIGHLY ENJOYABLE RIDE.”
VHS MASSACRE: Cult Film and the Decline of Physical Media
A pre-screening treat for festival goers, the CFF will be presenting the Kenneth Powell and Thomas Edward Seymour documentary VHS MASSACRE: Cult Film and the Decline of Physical Media. The documentary explores the ebb and flow of physical media from the video store era to modern day and its dire effect on Indie and cult films. It’s a history lesson on how media came to expel the VHS tape and welcome the DVD, Internet streaming and more contemporary ways of enjoying mass media. It’s sure to be an intriguing and enlightening watch.

Final Cut: Ladies and Gentlemen
A movie that’s cut out of 450 other films: Sounds interesting, right? A film made entirely in the editing room only, Final Cut: Ladies and Gentlemen is a love story comprised of other love stories from countless films over different eras. Watch Bruce Willis fight to prove his love to his wife in Die Hard. Or Leonardo Di Caprio fall in love with Kate Winslet on the sinking Titanic. This exploration of true love also explores the identities of men and women in film. Scenes from classics like The Godfather and Indiana Jones are also included. More expected and romantic films like Amelie are involved as well. It’s not only a love story, but a trip into the past and present of cinema.
Der bunker
Der Bunker is a strange fairy tale about a student who ends up lodging with a peculiar family. He gets a shack with no windows in a bunker deep in the forest, instead of a tranquil and solitary seaside location. On top of that, he must homeschool the owner’s 8-year-old son, Klaus. Did I mention that Klaus looks like he’s in his early 30s? As you can guess, bizarre events occur and things get a little crazy in this weird comedy. n
