Pennsylvania’s public university tuitions have continued to go up in light of Gov. Tom Corbett’s education cuts and scholarship cash drying up all over the country, so the Cheyney, PA-based HBCU Cheyney University has become pretty creative in raising money for scholarships, in the hopes that they continue to attract talented, driven students to its athletic program, regardless of their income status. The college’s enthusiastic “C” Club, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) group of alumni fundraisers and boosters, has raised $150,000 over three years with their annual charity Wade Wilson Golf Tournament. This year, though, the group is going for a record, looking to raise $100,000 in a single day. State Sen. Vincent J. Hughes (D-Philadelphia) has signed on to help, serving as honorary chairperson—and not a single “C” Club member’s going to hold the fact that he’s a Temple man against him. Don’t golf much, but still want to participate in this worthy undertaking? The full day of fun includes a clinic to help you sharpen that raggedy golf game, a BBQ buffet and a silent auction, featuring a private tour of QVC Studio Park and a wine/cupcake tasting at Penns Woods Winery among its offerings. / R.L. 7am. $75-$160. Penn Oaks Country Club, 150 Penn Oaks Drive, West Chester, PA. 610.399.0501. cheyneycclub.com
