Carlton Community College Royston Lane Carlton Barnsley S71 3EW Tel: 01226 728494 Specialisms in Science and Performing Arts with Communication and Interaction Resourced Provision Fax: 01226 725640 PRINCIPAL: MR D POWELL 16 March 2012 Dear Parent/Carers As you know, the college was inspected in January using the new, more challenging Ofsted framework. Despite considerable improvements being made, they judged the college as being in need of special measures. Attached to this letter is a letter from Ofsted sent to all students that you may like to read. As regards the full Ofsted report, it is available to view on either the school’s website www.carltoncommunitycollege.org or the Ofsted website www.ofsted.gov.uk . If you would prefer to receive a paper copy, please complete the attached slip, which is at the end of the Ofsted letter to students, and return to school. The full report lists a series of actions that the school needs to undertake to improve further and we are already completing an Action Plan to rigorously address those issues. The report also makes a series of very positive comments about the college, some of which are listed below: ‘Overall, students’ attainment rose at a significantly higher rate than nationally’. ‘In Years 7, 8 and 9 teacher assessment indicates improving attainment and progress in English, Mathematics and Science’. ‘The change to the school day…has led to a calm and well ordered atmosphere around school’. ‘Leaders have taken effective steps to improve the achievement of Year 11 students, especially in English and Mathematics’. ‘Staff from the amalgamated schools are now working co‐operatively in their teams’. ‘The new sense of direction and improved communication has raised staff morale and commitment to bringing about further improvements’. ‘Teachers are well equipped with knowledge about disabled students and those with special educational needs and how they learn best’. ‘There was a significant rise in English results and an improvement in those in maths (last year GCSEs)’. ‘The college met the national floor standard’. ‘Students supported by the resourced provision… are well integrated and contribute well in lessons’. Can I also take this opportunity to thank those of you who completed the parental questionnaires which were very positive in the main, and contributed to the overall inspection process. Yours faithfully Mr D Powell Principal Excellence through unity Working together to ensure the highest quality education for each individual student, through a culture of continual improvement
