welcome Challenge and discovery are exercised often in the Mad River Valley. The hills are a little steeper (going up and going down!), the turns a little tighter, but the reward is a little bit better here. Because what you really discover when you try something new, whether a new line, a new trail, or a new friend, is a little more of yourself. The simple landscape you first saw has a dimension and complexity you were unaware of, and now it's more than a pretty skyline. You see things from a different angle. A new perspective dawns, and you understand a little more about how things fit together as a whole. It's worth the effort.

A ski area like no other. In 2015, Ski Magazine named MRG #1 in Overall Satisfaction for the 3rd year running! Powder Magazine rated it "The Best Place to Grow Up Skiing". And Snow East Magazine calls it their Favorite Classic Resort. Locals have known this all along! A place where skiing remains an outdoor adventure in an unspoiled natural setting… also famous for America’s sole surviving single chairlift, completely renovated in 2007. The trail system follows the contours of General Stark

Mountain to a single base area, so it’s easy for families to meet without any worry. Uncrowded slopes, no snowboarding & a pristine mountain creates a skiing experience like no other. The Mad River Glen Cooperative fulfills a simple mission: “…to protect & preserve the forests & mountain ecosystems of General Stark Mountain in order to provide skiing, other recreational access & to maintain the unique character of the area for present & future generations.”

when it snows... The skiing in the Mad River Valley is worldclass. It has the benefit of fewer crowds most of the time, and it's plain inspiring to be in the company of skiers and riders who can handle New England conditions straight up, as nature intended. But you don't have to be a 100-day skier to have fun in the snow. Try sledding: free, fast, and a real workout. Best place? Go to Sugarbush Golf course off of West Hill Rd. There's a great, long, swoopy fairway that turns into a day-long thrill ride that captures the last rays of the sun. How about ice skating? If your neighbor doesn't have a convenient pond, try the Skatium in Waitsfield Village, our community outdoor rink where pick-up hockey players and scarf-swaddled toddlers share the rink in the day, and under the lights at night. 496-8845. Got a dog and need to go for a run? You can run on the road, but how about a leashless romp on skis through the fields in East Warren at Blueberry Lake XC? Dog-friendly, and a great way to exercise both of you when the road is full of salt. 496-6687. Snowmobiling is like travelling a magical winteronly highway. Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VtVast.org), together with local clubs, maintain almost 5,000 miles of trails in the state. 10

Mad River Valley 4-Season Guide

Many convenient trailheads means snowmobilers can hook up to trails all over the state. Get a simple trail pass and a valid state registration through our local chapter, the Mad River Ridge Riders. 229-0005. If it's really frightful, there's always shopping! There's nothing like a stretch of severe weather to justify that amazing outfit.

Check out the latest styles for all sports at Alpine Options, VT North Ski Shop, Sportive, Infinite Sports, Mountainside Ski Service, Onion River Sports, Clearwater Sports, Waterbury Sports, the Mad River Glen General Store, Ole's XC Center and the many shops found at Lincoln Peak: Adventure Gear Shop, the Schoolhouse Kids' Gear shop, and the General Store.

People wonder: how do you live through those cold New England winters? The best defense to the long dark days is to embrace it with both arms and make your own heat via outdoor exercise, no matter what the weather. Of course, this means equipment: snowshoes (and headlamps) for after-work hiking; cross country touring skis for zipping around the woods behind your house; and just the right outerwear to handle any conditions. Visit the people in our local shops to find the exact proportion of water-repellancy to wick to warmth. They will steer you in the right direction with knowledge won from living here and playing here for years, sometimes since childhood. There are enough hills around that you'll burn your own sun before long. Rosy cheeked and satisfied, you have conquered the beast for the day! And if the weather is forbidding, you always have the option of sitting by the fire with a mug of hot tea!

If you attach climbing skins to the bottom of alpine skis to allow uphill travel on downhill skis, once the ascent is complete, the skins are removed…and you have a seriously fun wilderness experience. It might take a whole day to get just one gorgeous run. The Slide Brook Wilderness is a great place to start. swimming holes heading

It's a little shocking to see 20-something young people hurl themselves off an unimaginably tall cliff into a natural pool the circumference (but not depth) of a kiddie pool at Warren Falls. It's all about your perspective: for some of these kids, jumping into the river is something they've been doing as soon as they could swim, and the taller cliffs and more challenging flips become easier with time. You will see people climb foot-pegged tree trunks above the boulders to leap more than 45' into Lareau swim hole; swan dives like the ones pictured here from the roof of the covered bridge in Waitsfield are as common as seeing paddlers below. It's part of growing up around here, taking advantage of the natural landscape and taking calculated risks to get the most enjoyment out of life. As always, never ever jump until you've checked below the surface of the swimming hole first, and never ever do anything you don't want to do. ŠŠ MOLLYFGEIGER@GMAIL.COM

heading swimming holes BLUEBERRY LAKE, WARREN

GREAT EDDY SWIMMING HOLE

Blueberry Lake Rd., off Plunkton Rd.

Bridge Street, Waitsfield

The place to paddle, bike, swim & relax. Surrounded by US Forest Service land, this lake was created not too long ago by Lenord Robinson because it was an awesome idea. Great for the littlest kids and amazingly beautiful. Rent standup paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes you can take with you from town to the lake. Availability and paddleboard yoga schedule at clearwatersports.com. Award-winning mountainbike & multi-use trails west of dam (see pages 30-31).

Just below the (newly rebuilt) 1833 Great Eddy Covered Bridge! Kids have been daring each other to jump, flip, and spin off the covered bridge for more than 150 years. A little upstream is a less-frequented spot featuring a strip of rocks in the middle of the river when the water is low.

WARREN FALLS

Walk along the path then take a swim! A pebbly beach allows you to wade. Rocks form a gentle ‘rapid.’ Park at Meadow Road, take hike on the path with your tube and float back down! A Mad River Valley "must do".

Rt. 100 south of Warren. Look for parking lot. A natural waterpark! Multiple pools of crystal clear water range in depth from 1 to 10+ feet. Prehistoric boulders serve as diving platforms and natural slides at varying heights for everyone to enjoy. One of the top swimming holes in the United States. WARREN RIVERSIDE PARK

Just south of Sugarbush Access Rd., Rt. 100 A quiet spot: shallow and welcoming. Off-road parking area, secluded meadow, and rope swing plus an interesting hike via the Mad River Path to the Snowmaking Pond. Great spot to catch the afternoon's last rays of sun.

5 Five-Star Hikes Sunset Ledge. Elevation 2924' • 2.2 miles Perfect for kids; a scramble in some places. Popular (for good reason). Park at Lincoln Gap and head south on Long Trail. Views over Addison County of verdant farmland to Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Range. About an hour, plus how much time you spend enjoying the view. Mt. Abraham. Elev 4000' • 5.2 miles This is a four+ hour hike if you are a normal human being, and the views are spectacular. Mt. Abe is one of Vermont's 5 peaks over 4,000', with 360º panoramic views. Part of the Monroe Skyline. Park at Lincoln Gap and head North on the Long Trail. Camel's Hump. Elev 4080' • 7.4/5.6 miles This challenging, spectacular 7.4 mile round-trip hike takes you above the trees to Vermont’s highest undeveloped peak. Spectacular views and an unparalleled feeling of accomplishment. Follow Rt. 100 north for 10 miles to Duxbury; follow directions to the trailhead on Camel's Hump Rd. Or take Rt. 17 over ‘App Gap,’ take first right to Huntington Ctr., then a right past the town hall. Summit is 3.5 miles either way. Budget 5 hours. 28

General Stark. Elev 3662' • 6.2 miles A locals fave. Start from the App Gap and head South on the Long Trail up steep Stark's Wall and follow the LT to the Stark's Nest Shelter at the top of the Single Chair. Or start from the Mad River Glen Ski area and hike the service roads up to the same spot. About 3 hours RT. Burnt Rock. Elev 3168’ • 5.2 miles It offers some of the best views! Park at the end of Big Basin Rd., follow Hedgehog Brook Trail 2 miles to the intersection of the Long Trail. Shortly after joining the Long Trail, a short spur

trail to the left leads to a small glacial pothole. Burnt Rock is named for its bare summit. About 4.5 hours round trip. These hikes are challenging; do not underestimate the journey. Be prepared. Always bring a good, printed topographical trail map; Map Adventures is the best (at The Tempest Bookstore and local gear shops). Trail markers are not always visible and estimated hiking time is based on fit individuals. Always have hiking shoes, carry a backpack with more water than you think you will need, some calorie-rich foods, and a flashlight; bring an extra layer for warmth or rain. Sunscreen & bug repellent might be needed too.

We love our trails and are out on them often. It's multi-tasking: exercise, meditation, exploration, social time with friends or sometimes a way to conduct a business meeting. But what if you aren't sure if you want to commit to a 4,000' peak? Here are some great trails for shorter hikes. If you call 802-4965443 we'll personally meet you there and show you where to go! Warren Vista: Start in the Warren Elementary School parking lot. Walk north past the skate park to the trailhead, marked by posted map and Yestermorrow shelter. At the very top, there's satisfying and steep rocky scramble to a west-facing view. About an hour RT. Wu Ledges: Town-owned property with multi-use trails. Park in the Historic Waitsfield Village parking lot, walk through the covered bridge and up Joslin Road to the historic cemetary. Follow the trail at the back of the cemetary, loop around to the Wu Ledge (named after the family that donated the land, thank you!) and follow the trail back to start. A little over an hour for the loop. Mad River Path: Multi-use (hiking, biking, snowshoeing, xc) paths located at various locations throughout the Mad River Valley. Go to madriverpath.org for detailed and updated maps. Large maps posted at each trailhead, too.

Mountain Bike Rides Here are two of the miles of rides available in our Valley. Go to madriverriders.com for complete descriptions & the trails map. Blueberry Lake Network: The Riders have built 4 loops with about 6 miles/550' elev. of friendly beginner to intermediate trails in the Green Mountain National Forest west of Blueberry Lake. These closed loops provide a a sweet dose of internationally recognized, award-winning fun! New in 2015: Suki's Alley, a sweet flowy one-way downhill that connects Tootsie Roll to Lenord's Loop near the big bridge. You can't go wrong! All MRR trails, including the ones at Blueberry Lake are multi-use, meaning that they are open to hikers, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers. They are designed to be fun, regardless of use! Camels' Hump Forest: Howe Block A wide variety of classic Vermont mountain biking, from Class IV road and wider trails with easier stretches to very technical rock features and several stream crossings in fun hilly terrain. The central MRR trail network extends east from Tucker Hill to American Flatbread/Lareau Farm at Route 100, south to the Eurich Pond trailhead off the Sugarbush Access Road and west to German Flats Rd. Cyclone, Clinic and Busternut are steep, rocky and rooty and GS 30

provides expert flow, while Enchanted Forest, Cyclone Connector and Revolution are more intermediate. Enter from Camel's Hump State Forest parking area at at top of Tucker Hill Rd on the Enchanted Forest trail. Cross stream on sweet new bridge, then climb under a powerline and maple sap lines to a rocky high point. Descend through open mixed hardwoods into a stand of pines. Take your choice at the intersection! In 2016 a new intermediate trail called Evolution will provide a fun climb/ descent option all the way from Tucker Hill to Flatbread/Lareau Farm. Many thanks to VT-FPR and our awesome landowners at Lareau Farm, the Featherbed Inn and the Laskowski family at Dana Forest Farm.

The mountain bike trail network that exists today is made possible through the combined efforts of many organizations, notably the Mad River Riders–Vermont Mountain Bike Association, the VT Dept. of Forests, Parks, and Recreation, the US Forest Service, local towns, The Mad River Path Assoc., Catamount Trail Assoc., Sugarbush Resort, and many private land owners. Most of the trails are created, maintained, and improved by workparties of volunteers, organized by the Mad River Riders. Check their website for updates, madriverriders. com or facebook before you go out for updates. Become a member! Joining one of the work parties to clear, clip, roll, and sweep is a good way to be part of the community. Not all intersections are marked, be prepared to navigate. Always carry tools, food, water, extra clothing, communication, and a paper map. You don't have to be far away to be far away from help. Print the map, and trail descriptions from madriverriders.com or pick a Map Adventures Trail Map up from Stark Mountain Bike Works, Fit Werx, Infinite Sports, Clearwater Sports, Waterbury Sports or Onion River Sports Shop before you head out.

road & gravel biking heading

Road Biking Whether you are a relative beginner or honing your skills on the steepest of hills, the Mad River Valley offers superb riding. Route 100 has miles of well-maintained two-lane blacktop with little traffic, and fresh surfaces make the challenge truly world-class. Spectacular scenery, clean air, and cool temps make road biking here just a little better. It's a great starting point for interesting round trip routes around the region. Cyclists challenge themselves criss-crossing the Green Mountains in what are called "gap" rides, trying one or more of the steep, winding roads that connect the hillside towns on either side of mountain ridges that rise past 4,000'. What's new in road biking? There has been a surge of interest in dirt-road biking. Not exactly mountain biking, but choosing cycling routes that include slower-trafficked gravel & dirt roads. Vermont has more dirt roads than paved, so there is a lot of choice here! Gravel roads have low traffic, they're twisty, turny, and tend to reveal the true quiet beauty of the countryside. This trend, "one bike, any road" versatility, gains value as people get realistic about time and budgetary constraints. These bikes take a variety of tire options and have disk brakes that are strong across varied weather and road conditions. They are ideal to explore the back country of Vermont, where the "tar roads" turn to dirt without warning or explanation. 32

Mad River Valley 4-Season Guide

Road bikes can be rigged with beefier tires and particular geometry to provide a better experience on sometimes exhilarating surfaces. There are many new races and meetups that route these out: the Dirty 40 in Derby and the Farm to Fork Fondo in Pittsfield launched recently with a lot of buzz. Group rides such as the Dirt Roads of Vermont Epic Sojourn and Back Road Cycling of Central Vermont are more tour oriented than the races, and tons of fun. Here in the Mad River Valley, the Green Mountain Stage Race, a nationally recognized four-day gathering of bicyclists is put on over Labor Day weekend. Sprints past the dairy farms in Warren, time trials along the Mad River from Duxbury to Moretown, a grueling 100 km point-to-point distance race up with a summit ending at the top of the App Gap, and a fast, flat, technical Criterion in Burlington draw the nation's finest athletes. Many people combine interests when they come to the MRV: in winter to ski at Sugarbush or Mad River Glen, with a fitting at the top-rated cycling shop Fit Werx in the center of Waitsfield for an upcoming triathlon; some come for a fitting in one day; others come for a wedding, discover the roads and trails, and get hooked, starting their lifetime love affair with our surroundings. heading maple sugaring There is no substitute for pure Vermont Maple syrup. You can buy local syrup from Mehurons, local farmers, or Sugarhouses like Bragg Farm & Morse Farm (opposite), but some local families like to tap their own trees and boil their own sap as a hobby, family activity, and as a way to connect to the land and to Vermont history. In March you can see steam pouring out of these sugar shacks as maple syrup producers boil sap throughout the day and night. It takes about 40 gallons of maple sap to produce one gallon of syrup, which is the entire season's output of 3 to 4 fully-grown trees. The window of collecting sap is very brief, usually around six weeks long, straddling the end of winter and the beginning of spring, known as "sugaring time". The sap runs through the trees while the snow is melting but must be collected before the maple trees have a chance to bud. Maple syrup is produced only in the northeastern US and eastern Canada. Trevor Hallam, a senior at local Harwood Union High School, grew up in Fayston and got interested in running his own sugaring operation when he was about 13 years old. He started by rehabbing an abandoned sugar shack, tapping trees by hand and using ancient equipment. In 2013, he created a Kickstarter to gather funds to buy a more efficient evaporator, taps, and other equipment. Currently, Trevor taps more than 450 trees in the hills near his home, burns about 2 and half cords of wood during the season, and spends sugaring time on a nearly 24-hour rotation with the help of a couple of friends, his dad, and some neighbors. On a typical day when the sap is running, after Trevor comes home from school, he checks his taps & looks for leaks in his lines from 2-4 pm. He starts the evaporator around 4:30 and runs it until 2 or 3 in the 50

Mad River Valley 4-Season Guide

morning with his friends, playing music, cooking hot dogs, and watching to make sure the sap is condensing efficiently. In the morning, he gets up, goes to school, and starts over again. He nets around 35 gallons to sell & share for this work, but it's the process of taking something that nature provides and creating a product that has real value; the Made in Vermont, Keeping it Local that makes it even more fun and interesting. Trevor plans to go to college for the next four years then return to Vermont to keep his business growing.

Trevor Hallam with friends Thomas Belknap, Sam Fuller and Siemen Smidt.

farms & farm map

GROWING LOCAL Eating local is a way of life here. Vermont offers twice as much locally-produced food per capita than any other state in the nation. Restaurants & residents make financial commitments to local farmers, called community-supported agriculture, or CSAs, reaping high return on their investment at harvest time. Farming is on the curriculum and on the menu at all of our public schools. Much of their fresh produce, breads, and in some cases meat, come from local farms & bakeries. Established farms in danger of disuse have begun new life as producers of organic products to meet the growing demand for locally produced food. Iconic local farms are being saved from development by the Vermont Land

Trust, which shares the purchase cost with young, ambitious farmers. Established farms are shifting their focus to products that will perform better in this new marketplace. From traditional dairies to whey-fed pigs to shiitake mushrooms, there are more than 75 viable food producers in the Mad River Valley alone, and the number is increasing every year. Our little valley is supplying the energy, facilities, and the market demand for a sustainable, healthy local food economy. And it’s not just about the delicious food: jobs are created, historic farms protected, and pathways are made to grow the culture of sustainable farming for the future. The flavor is better, which kind of sums up why we live here.

Making Art Happen The history of the Mad River Valley is intertwined with its natural resources: timber, farmland, and abundant snow created opportunities for logging, agriculture, and the ski industries that have drawn people to this place for centuries. There’s an additional natural resource that can be found in abundance here: artistic talent! Expressed in a multitude of media, the artists who have settled in this area are busy making art happen. Many are drawn to the area for inspiration due to the natural beauty, freedom from crowds, and the open-heartedness they find in the community. And a funny thing happens to visiting artists, just like almost every other kind of visitor to the Mad River Valley: on the ride home, there’s a sense that there’s a piece, or maybe a peace, that is here and not available anywhere else. Our robust arts organization, the Valley Arts, operates a year-round gallery and oversees the Vermont Festival of the Arts in August each year. A month-long showcase of talent that targets a broad range of ages and interests, the Festival was picked by the editors of Yankee Magazine as a “Top 10 New England Event”. With a full schedule of events that call for artists from around the state and country, and working with other local arts organizations like the Green Mountain Cultural Center, the Festival gathers 76

together more than 100 quality arts-related events including gallery shows, musical performances, theatrical productions, workshops for children and adults… a comprehensive, curated tour of area artistic ability! For events & updates: vermontartfest.com. Many artists work out of studios that are open to the public, or by appointment (see pages 80-81 for a brief description). Vermont holds statewide Open Studio days over Memorial Day weekend and Columbus Day weekend, which provide a wonderful way to tour backroads & meet interesting, hardworking, and eclectic artists. vermontcrafts.com. There are many more studios hidden away in the hills or in antique barns alongside the Mad River that house dedicated artisans who work on balance, scale, shape, color, function, & design because they are doing what is important to them. We applaud this spirit!

Do It Yourself Art Tour: Try this route in summertime: Start in Warren (on your bike if you really want to multi-task) at the Parade Gallery for a look at the many local artists represented there. Across the street, stop in at The Pitcher Inn to see their collection of oil paintings. Head up toward East Warren Road, past fields, barns, and cows. Stop at The Round Barn (an important architectural site in itself) which hosts the Photo Show (Aug.1–Sept. 5) Continue down the hill, go through the covered bridge, and stop in Historic Waitsfield Village for lunch or an ice cream cone and gallery hop. Continue south on Rt. 100 and stop at Lareau Farm’s Big Red Barn to view the Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition ( June 26–July 24) or the Big Red Barn Art Show ( July 30–Sept. 4). Visit Lareau swimming hole to take a dip in the Mad River on the way back to Warren. A perfect day.

Every Wednesday is Valley Night at the Big Picture: live local music on tap at this vintage vibe arthouse movie theater that serves breakfast, lunch & dinner! On the first Sunday of the month a high-quality jazz trio plays brunches. Localfolk Smokehouse books rocking roadhouse bands year round to go with its smoking BBQ; Phantom Restaurant's sophisticated sound system makes acts booked there even more amazing. Castlerock Pub & The Green Mountain Lounge (upstairs at Mt. Ellen base lodge) have apres-ski bands holidays and some weekends to extend the fun into the night and postpone reality for a few more hours. The legendary General Stark's Pub at Mad River Glen frequently hosts good-time music after the lifts stop spinning. In summer, gather outdoors to sample local food & beer, listen to music, & catch up with friends. Live bands play at the Farmer's Market. Round Up on the River near Bridge Street has live music, food trucks, local brews, and kids pitching themselves into the river. Mad River Green sometimes holds evening concerts And the Vermont Music Festival, August 19-22, gathers more than a dozen acts on two stages for a full day of family-friendly fun in Kenyon's Field; swimming hole nearby! www.madrivervalley.com

While you are driving along Vermont state highways (which we do a lot of since there is just one interstate), please enjoy the flowy, traffic-less roads that wind past verdant sunshiny cow-dotted meadows through magically mossy waterfall gorges; but be aware… your definition of what is unpopulated rural highway and what is town road might need a bit of adjustment. Here's a rule of thumb: if it's one house and one barn on one side of the road, it's probably a rural highway. If it's one house on either side of the road, it might be a Main Street. Be proactive: Look for the posted highway speed limits. They change very often and the reason for the change is not necessarily self-evident. It's safer for our neighbors (and less expensive for the driver) to really look for those signs.

THE MAD RIVER VALLEY IS WHERE YOU FIND YOUR SMILE

Surrounded on three sides by tall mountains, the Mad River Valley is hidden away, uncrowded, and fantastically unspoiled. There's something about the geography that seems to cast a spell on life here, filtering out the bad stuff and keeping in the good. The pure air, quaint villages, and expansive views are just a start: there's a resourcefulness and enthusiasm that is hard to find anywhere else. It doesn't matter who you are: when you are surrounded by beauty, meeting a challenge, and making new friends, your face breaks out into an authentic and irrepressible grin. You'll see it often here, and we can't get enough. Our restaurateurs are proud localvores, and when you see a local farmer’s name next to a menu item, you can bet it will taste better. We have a recognized model of sustainable local agriculture, supporting our farmers and enjoying the bounty. Area restaurants, grocery stores and schools serve food that tastes better, period.

Dozens of barns in our little Valley were built as dairy farms more than a century ago. Most can be viewed from the road. Many barns that are not still housing cows have been repurposed into innovative agriculture or artistic uses. They remain iconic reminders of our connection to the land. The 2016 Barns & Bridges self-guided tour is August 21; the tour is one of the events of the Festival of the Arts. valleyartsfoundation.org.

Mad River Valley 4-Season Guide

The Bragg Barn, Bragg Hill Rd, Fayston. Built in 1909. Owned for years by the Bragg Family, it is now Ploughgate Farm Creamery, run by farmer Marisa Mauro. Purchased in 2013 with grants from the VT Land Trust, the VT Foodbank, & the MRV Planning district who provide funds to maintain historical farmland and foster growth of new ag enterprises. Farmer Mauro's artisan butter & cheesemaking is earning national attention. Find Ploughgate Farm butter at Mehuron's. Kingsbury Barn, Rt. 100, Warren. The Kingsbury Farm in Warren was the first VT Land Trust farm in the MRV re-introducing agricultural enterprise to historical famrland. Lease terms? Tons of oganic vegetables, distributed to the VT Foodbank, allowing farmers Aaron Locker & Suzanne Slomin to rehab the farm structures and fallow fields. The farmers purchased the farm outright in 2015 and are expanding infrastructure and production. They also run a multi-farm CSA. Mountain Valley Farm Barn, Common Rd., East Warren. A 100’ x 50’ post & beam structure that has been in continuous use as a farm animal building since it was built in the late 1800s. Currently it is the stable for draught horses and other livestock kept by the owners. This well-maintained barn has a picturesque cupola and breathtaking setting make it a perfect symbol of earlier agricultural times. Copy courtesy the Waitsfield Historical Society, from their brochures 2001-2004.

Round Barn, East Warren Rd., Warren. Built as a dairy barn in 1910 and beautifully restored eighty years later. Round barns were the cutting edge technology of their day, designed for more efficient use of lumber, space, and labor. Owners Kim & Jim Donohue now host weddings, wedding receptions, concerts, & art exhibits in its immaculate, beautifully lit space. Outlying meadows feature a Sculpture Stroll, and the Inn, an award-winning farmhouse B & B, hosts guests year-round. Knoll Farm, Bragg Hill Rd., Fayston. An 1830's 2-story barn is served by a “wharfin” (a covered entrance to the upper level of a barn) leading onto the 2nd floor, used as a retreat center where workshops & educational and children's programs are run. Owners Helen Whybrow & Peter Forbes raise organic high bush blueberries and Icelandic sheep due to the farm’s acidic soil and rocky terrain. Edgcomb Barn, Airport Rd., Warren. The Edgcomb Barn is the summer home to Phantom Theater. This is the third incarnation of a barn on the site, the other two were decimated by fire; this was the first barn in the state to feature a hipped roof. Lareau Farm Barn, Route 100, Waitsfield. The 1895 barn is used for storage at the American Flatbread Factory. Owner George Schenk generously opens it up for the Green Mountain Watercolor Show in July and the Big Red Barn Art Show in August. Highlights of the annual Festival of the Arts, the barn shows are history and creation in one stop. The property is a working farm, providing organic produce and sustainably-raised meats. Skinner Barn, Common Rd. East Warren. A beautifully restored 1891 dairy barn. Classic post and beam construction allows the upper floor, originally designed for hay storage, to be used as an assembly space for a wide range of functions from weddings & rehearsal dinners to theater productions and cabarets.

COV E R E D Most municipal covered bridges were constructed between 1820 and 1904. Not only do the roof & sides prevent heavy snow from stressing the span, the design creates a great place to leap into the river from, and a romantic shelter from the weather.

Warren Bridge Finished in 1880, this bridge is short & simple. It features a single span supported by queen post trusses, and stands now as it did then, unaltered! Notice the differing openings at either end to accomodate an overhanging gable roof on its western side. This important symbol of the Town of Warren cannot be altered in any way without prior approval by a 2/3 majority of the town’s electorate!

The Great Eddy Bridge Ca. 1833. The oldest operating covered bridge in VT, with the longest clear span of any Burr truss bridge in the state. It survived Irene, a destructive 2011 storm which caused considerable damage to properties in the area. A major symbol of the Mad River Valley, it continues its workaday life with considerable style and without complaint.

Tiny towns in rural Vermont towns often had half a dozen schoolhouses to accomodate far-flung pupils in the 19th century. The schoolhouses were often built on land not suitable for farming, logging, trapping, mining or any other profitable pursuit; they were built on tiny strips, close to the road, and frequently located at intersections so that the most children would be able to reach class traveling the shortest possible distance to school. Note that cemetaries were often established on the common land adjacent to the schoolhouses, which for contemporary visitors is an interesting juxtaposition. As with all of Vermonts’s vernacular architecture, the schoolhouses tell a tale of the economics of the state.

BRIDGES Along with dairy barns, many were constructed by shipbuilders looking for work after the War of 1812. About 100 covered bridges remain in the state, all of which are protected by Vermont law.

The Pine Brook Bridge Built in 1855, is the only other covered bridge to stand in Waitsfield. It remains structurally unaltered and fully operational. Half the size of the Great Eddy, the Pine Brook is representative of the many small and simply executed bridges built across Vermont’s numerous smaller rivers and streams.

SCHOOLHOUSES

The economic boom fueled by logging and then sheep farming from the 1830s to the1850s meant that there was enough money to build sturdy, well-designed schoolhouses that saw more than a century of use. After the Civil War, industrialization in cities & the opening of the West kept “progress” away from the beautifully built towns & farms of places like the Mad River Valley. It explains why Vermont towns are so well-preserved and provide such an unspoiled glimpse into the lives of the past. More than 25 individual schoolhouses served the Mad River Valley before the schools centralized in the mid 20th century. Locations (A-K) are marked on the pull-out map in the center of the Guide. As always, please be respectful of private property. All photos: June Anderson.
