LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

June Anderson Publisher, Resort Guides

When I was introduced to the Mad River Valley a couple of decades ago, I was used to walking on clearly defined paths and skiing mapped trails. My husband told me that people here skiied in the woods, and I scoffed. Why ski in the woods, when God created groomers? His enthusiasm convinced me, however reluctantly, to follow him off-piste. There were many hare-brained excursions with him and the rest of our ski friends over the past 20 years, including unexpected cliffs and the "easy way down" — use your imagination! Winter woods excursions led to off-season exploring, both on foot and on mountainbike. I can happily say that I now am very comfortable in the woods, and seek the solitude and discovery I find in there. There's a funny thing I noticed along the way, hovever. When following an ancient road through the forest, or some tracks through the woods, the trail can disappear suddenly, without any explanation. It's there, and then it's gone. You're on autopilot and then you're on your own. You have to hack through fallen logs or rough ground using your instinct to guide you until you get to familiar ground. In the woods, as in life, the path will disappear before you are ready and when you least expect it. I think what I've learned through experience is that no matter what happens, you can never really be lost. Someone has walked this way before you, and you'll find your way through no matter how alone you may feel. You put one foot in front of the other and keep walking the best way you know how. You will always find your way home. That's what the Mad River Valley does for the people who are lucky enough to spend time here. It asks a lot, but it gives back more. It makes people better skiers, better bikers, and this extraordinary community makes people better too, no matter what they have to go through. No matter what.

LETTER FROM OUR CHAMBER Hello! Welcome to the Mad River Valley! I’m new here myself, arriving on the job in late 2016. What I’ve quickly discovered is that this is a community of hard-working, intelligent, innovative, authentic, kind people with a strong love for this place they call ‘the Valley’. And, I’ve come to love the Valley too. For me, it’s the recreation – the skiing at three mountains, the mountain biking network, the river’s swimming holes, and the many hiking and walking trails. It’s the abundance of arts and a collective appreciation for the work of fine artists and crafters. It’s the food – from the farms to the creative cuisine served at a variety of tables. It’s the small batch beer and spirits, and all the cozy spots in which you can pull up a chair and share a tale or two with friends. It’s the events – from farmers markets to marathons – that bring both locals and visitors together for a shared experience. It’s the shopkeepers who are unofficial ambassadors of Valley information. It’s the innkeepers, who selflessly welcome guests into the comforts of their extended homes. It’s the beautiful outdoor spaces. It’s all these things that make my heart sing for this special place in Vermont. And, it’s all the Valley’s secret spots and stories that I haven’t discovered yet. But, I will. The Valley is mine to explore, and it’s yours too! Enjoy your stay, and if you have a moment to drop me a line and let me know what Valley treasures you find during your visit, I would be happy to hear from you. Best wishes, Jasmine Bigelow Executive Director Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce jasmine@madrivervalley.com 6

winter play SKINNING

BACK COUNTRY TRAILS

Head into the back country to get your turns in. If you attach climbing skins to the bottom of alpine skis with AT bindings, you can climb up the hill on your own steam. Once the skins are removed… you have a seriously fun wilderness experience. It might take a whole day to get just one gorgeous run. The Slide Brook Wilderness is a great place to start. Mad River Glen has a policy of allowing anyone to skin when the lifts are not spinning. 496-3551. Sugarbush Resort has daily directions, call Guest Services at 5836590 or sugarbush.com.

There's a back-country wintertime route called the Catamount Trail that provides wintertime access from one end of Vermont to the other. Modeled after the Long Trail, but open only in winter, the CT was created by volunteers through partnerships with US Forest Lands, private landowners, and the trails already created and maintained by the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST). In our area, the CT goes right through Warren & Waitsfield and sisters up to parts of the Mad River Path in Fayston. Only 33 years old, this trail system is part of Vermont's robust public outdoor recreation infrastructure. Become a member! Maps, events, and more info: catamounttrail.org

Sugarbush’s twelve-passenger cabin cat, the Lincoln Limo, equipped with a flat screen TV and cushy seats, is used to transport guests up to Allyn’s Lodge for specialty dinners and full-moon skiing. The Lincoln Limo also hosts Sunset Groomer Rides for kids & families. But the real fun is on powder days when 12 likeminded people get to own the mountain until the lifts spin. Getting outside in Vermont This landscape is incredibly beautiful and the air is intoxicatingly fresh. Get out on a horse, on a bike, on skis, on snowshoes or just on your own two feet! The Mad River Path is an organization that promotes outdoor activites by creating traffic-free paths to walk throughout the MRV. All current paths are located on their website at madriverpath.org. Mad Path locations are marked on the pull-out map in the centerfold. FOR A BIGGER CHALLENGE

Sunset Ledge. Elevation 2924' • 2.2 miles

©© SUE GEIGER

Camel's Hump. Elev 4080' • 7.4/5.6 miles This challenging, spectacular 7.4 mile round-trip hike takes you above the trees to Vermont’s highest undeveloped peak. Spectacular views and an unparalleled feeling of accomplishment. Follow Rt. 100 north for 10 miles to Duxbury; follow directions to the trailhead on Camel's Hump Rd. Or take Rt. 17 over ‘App Gap,’ take first right to Huntington Ctr., then a right past the town hall. Summit is 3.5 miles either way. Budget 5 hours.

Perfect for kids; a scramble in some places. Popular (for good reason). Park at the top of Lincoln Gap and head south on Long Trail. Views over Addison County of verdant farmland to Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Range. About an hour, plus the time you spend enjoying the view.

General Stark. Elev 3662' • 6.2 miles

Mt. Abraham. Elev 4000' • 5.2 miles

Burnt Rock. Elev 3168’ • 5.2 miles

This is a four+ hour hike if you are a normal human being, and the views are spectacular. Mt. Abe is one of Vermont's 5 peaks over 4,000', with 360º panoramic views. Part of the Monroe Skyline. Park at Lincoln Gap and head North on the Long Trail.

It offers some of the best views! Park at the end of Big Basin Rd., follow Hedgehog Brook Trail 2 miles to the intersection of the Long Trail. Shortly after joining the Long Trail, a short spur trail to the left leads to a small glacial pothole. Burnt Rock is named for its bare summit. About 4.5 hours round trip.

A locals fave. Start from the App Gap and head South on the Long Trail up steep Stark's Wall and follow the LT to the Stark's Nest Shelter at the top of the Single Chair. Or start from the Mad River Glen Ski area and hike the service roads up to the same spot. About 3 hours RT.

TO ENSURE A GREAT HIKE...

These hikes are challenging; do not underestimate the journey. Be prepared. Always bring a good, printed topographical trail map; Map Adventures is the best (at The Tempest Bookstore and local gear shops). Trail markers are not always visible and estimated hiking time is based on fit individuals. Always wear hiking shoes, carry a backpack with more water than you think you will need, some calorie-rich foods, and a flashlight; bring an extra layer for warmth or rain. Sunscreen & bug repellent might be needed too.

Get Out and Ride! Spread throughout the Valley from Fayston to Waitsfield to Warren, the number of trails open to riders is growing through the combined efforts of many organizations, notably the Mad River Riders–Vermont Mountain Bike Association, the VT Dept. of Forests, Parks, and Recreation, the US Forest Service, local towns, The Mad River Path Assoc., Catamount Trail Assoc., Sugarbush Resort, and many private land owners. Vermont is known for its incredible outdoor recreation infrastructure and most of the local trails are created, maintained, and improved by workparties of volunteers, organized by the Mad River Riders. Become a member! Joining one of the work parties to clear, clip, roll, and sweep is a good way to become a part of the community. Check madriverriders.com or facebook before you go out for current maps and updates..All MRR trails, including the ones at Blueberry Lake, are multi-use, meaning that they are open to hikers, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers. Road (and gravel) Biking Whether you are a relative beginner or honing your skills on the steepest of hills, the Mad River Valley offers superb riding. Route 100 has miles of well-maintained two-lane blacktop with little traffic, and fresh surfaces make the challenge truly world-class. Spectacular scenery, clean air, and cool temps make road biking here just a little better. It's a great starting point for interesting round trip routes around the region. There's been a surge of interest in taking to gravel roads because they're low traffic, challenging, and they reveal the true quiet beauty of the countryside. Vermont has more dirt roads than paved, so there are a lot of choices! "One bike, any road" versatility gains value as people get realistic about time and budgetary constraints. With a variety of tire options and disc brakes that are strong across varied weather and road conditions, these bikes are ideal to explore the back country of Vermont, where the "tar roads" turn to dirt without warning or apology.

Road bikes can be rigged with beefier tires and particular geometry to provide a better experience on sometimes exhilarating surfaces. Check with Ian and the crew at Fit Werx in Historic Waitsfield Village for the latest fit & function for your setup. Voted the "Best Bike Shop in America" right here in the MRV! Quality road cycling, both paved and gravel, especially with friends: one more reason to love visiting (and living) in the Mad River Valley.

Fit Werx Rider-first bike fitting; Rider-matched bike sales. Named one of the “100 Best Bike Shops” in the country by Bicycling Magazine and a “Top Fitter” by Triathlete Magazine, Fit Werx helps cyclists of all levels get the most out of their road, triathlon, and mountain bikes. 4312 Main St., Waitsfield 802-496-7570 • www.fitwerx.com

Historic Waitsfield Village Village Square Irasville Mad River Green Warren Village

Is it Waitsfield? Or Irasville? Or Historic Waitsfield Village?

It's a little confusing. The village of Waitsfield was established early in the 19th century as the commercial center for the rural farming communities of the Mad River Valley. Irasville was farmed land until the mid-20th century; its level fields now contain the commercial district. Historic Waitsfield Village retains its vibrancy with galleries, shops, and restaurants adjacent to the historic covered bridge. Warren village is a magnet for its own covered bridge, restauarants, and shops.

What is going on in Village Square? The University of Vermont (together with the Friends of the Mad River and the Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District) created a catchment basin in the parking lot of Village Square. They want to see how low-impact stormwater treatment practices work in real life. In other words, instead of rainwater flowing from paved & hard surfaces directly into the Mad River, the catchment basin allows rainwater to seep through a garden planted in the middle of the parking lot. Even though it seems like Vermont has pretty much 100% resisted urbanization, initiatives like this have potential for allowing "green infrastructure" to be implemented in urbanized areas in the future, to help ameliorate flooding and water quality problems. So far, it's been working great. Come have a look yourself! That's just another instance of focusing on the local to protect the macro found in many of the stores surrounding this shopping center. Look at the Mad Taco: the food they serve is grown a couple miles away at a Vermont Land Trust farm; and Canteen Creemee is a snack bar that serves many locally-sourced menu items. Sustainable agriculture, even in the few developments we have, is a seriously successful way of life here.

©© SUE GEIGER

The deciduous forest that covers the Green Mountains does more than look pretty: Maple trees, found only in the northeastern North America, produce sap during a brief late-winter window. The sap is collected and boiled in evaporators: 40 gallons of sap make 1 gallon of syrup. Many of our friends and neighbors "run lines" through their properties to collect the sap. The round-the-clock boiling process to evaporate the sap is a social time, known as "sugaring". Try some locally produced syrup, bought from Easty Long's truck at the corner of 17 & 100; or go to Mehuron's Supermarket and The Store in Waitsfield, or The Warren Store & East Warren Community Market in Warren for your take-home stash. Dave at the Federated Auto store in Fiddler's Green boils his own too!

BEERS WORTH WAITING FOR... Lawson's Finest, a small batch artisanal microbrewery located in Warren, Vermont has been named the best beer in the universe by those in the know; many people wait on line to take a limited supply home (see the image of people waiting in line for beer below!) Get yours cold here: Waitsfield Wine Shoppe's beer cave, Mehuron's Supermarket & State Liquor Store; Warren Store; Paradise Deli on the Access Rd; East Warren Community Market; and the Village Grocery, pictured here. Tip: sign up for the Bed & Brew Beer package, offered through the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce— a couple of nights at an incredible inn or B & B packaged with a tour of Central Vermont's world-famous breweries!

They offer experience; a keen eye for composition, details, light and personalities; and can easily fit into the most formal or casual affairs—locally or abroad. Do It Yourself Art Tour: Try this route in summertime: Start in Warren (on your bike if you really want to multi-task) at the Parade Gallery for a look at the many local artists represented there. Across the street, stop in at The Pitcher Inn to see their collection of oil paintings. Head up toward East Warren Road, past fields, barns, and cows. Stop at The Inn at the Round Barn (an important architectural site in itself) which hosts the Photo Show (Aug.1–Sept. 4) and the Art in the Round Barn show (Sept. 17- Oct. 9). Continue down the hill, go through the covered bridge, and stop in Historic Waitsfield Village for lunch or an ice cream cone and gallery hop. Continue south on Rt. 100 and stop at Lareau Farm’s Big Red Barn to view the Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition ( June 18–July 23) or the Big Red Barn Art Show ( July 27–Sept. 3). Visit Lareau swimming hole to take a dip in the Mad River on the way back to Warren. A perfect day.

services in the mad river valley

services

Vermont in general, and the Mad River Valley in particular, have been able to fend off the big box development surge that consumed small businesses nationwide over the past 20 years. Family-owned hardware stores, auto repair shops, and professional services are the norm here. We buy local & use local, because it's sensible to do business that way.

Wildlife! Yes, it's out there. Most creatures are shy of humans., but we do share the landscape. I love that this bobcat strolled through our back yard in June, photo taken by our son Henry; in the image below, a rather large bear literally stepped in my tracks as I was taking an evening stroll last March, fortunately an hour and a half behind me. Photo taken the next morning!

Mad River Valley 4-Season Guide

local flavor in the mad river valley

Vermont offers twice as much locally-produced food per capita than any other state in the nation. Established farms are exploring products that perform better in this new marketplace, creating jobs, protecting historic farmland, and forging pathways for sustainable farming in the future.

Some of the farmers, chefs, and marketplace owners who are involved in the local food movement are listed here For a complete list of the 85+ businesses that qualify as growers and makers in the Mad River Valley, refer to the map and list on pages 56-59.

Using local products provides us with the freshest ingredients, supports our local farmers, and preserves open space. By supporting the small farmers we are actively participating in a sustainable economy, which benefits us all.

Locally sourcing vegetables, meats, dairy, bread, syrup and more reinforces the magical sense of place that is the Mad River Valley. Canteen's "farm-tocounter" culture is only possible because of the dedication of our farmer and maker partners to the benefit of all. It's our joyful responsibility.

Lorien Wroten & Adam Longworth The Common Man We try to source local ingredients whenever and wherever possible. Sourcing locally provides us with the freshest ingredients while supporting the local economy and sustaining the environment.  We feel really lucky to live in a place where we have access to such amazing, sustainable,  high quality product.  We also cherish the relationships built when we procure products locally.

Ana Dan, The Hydeaway Our chef uses local products to enhance the Vermont experience for locals and visitors. We proudly support our local farmers as part of this community, it's the best culinary outcome with the strongest economic benefit for all.

Joey Nagy, Mad Taco

Jeff Lynn, The Butchery

We pride ourselves on sourcing locally and organically, including from our own farm, whenever possible.

Buying local meats, cheese and produce has been the cornerstone of our little shop since our inception. Not only does supporting local farmers provide an obviously higher quality product, but directly ties us to the fertile lands of our Valley, promotes organic farming, sustainability and traceability. We are helping to preserve our rich agricultural heritage for future generations, and it brings us a great feeling of pride.

Gerry Nooney Timbers Restaurant Sugarbush Resort

Tom Mehuron Mehuron's Supermarket & Liquor Store

Sugarbush has become a culinary destination that offers both hyper-local-Vermont as well as international cuisine. Executive Chef Gerry Nooney leads each restaurant to serve fresh and artfully prepared dishes incorporating local meats and veggies, often with an international flair. The resort also offers a wide selection of local beers.

Our local products give my customers the freshest, highest quality foods from sources that are easily accountable for quality. Buying and selling locally supports our neighbors, communities and rural lifestyle and keeps the local economy healthier.

Claudia Becker The Big Picture

Heather & Andrew Lynds Mad River Barn

Featuring locally grown vegetables and herbs from Hartshorn’s Farm Stand and local meats from Neill Farm, both located in Waitsfield within 1 mile of our kitchen. Our breads are either house made or from local bread bakery ‘Red Hen’ We take great pride in creating delicious, freshly prepared meals made from local ingredients wherever possible.

We have amazing local products. Sourcing locally makes so much sense: it’s good for our economy, it’s better for the environment, by avoiding large scale monoculture farms and reducing carbon footprint, and it allows us to produce a better product. We really enjoy the relationships we have with our farmers.

Sarina Gulisano & Johnny Vitko The Sweet Spot

Alycia Biondo, East Warren Community Market

Kevin & Patti Begin, Tucker Hill Inn

We are inspired by the ingredients produced on local farms: they just taste better. In addition to loving the products that Kingsbury Market Gardens grows, Neill Farm raises, Monuments Farms milks, to name a few, we love the relationships we have built with these people.  As well as supporting our local farms we raise chickens for eggs, herbs and vegetables that we use in our spot.

We are proud of our efforts to bring fresh, local and organic meats, cheeses, produce and beer to our little corner of central Vermont. We support local farmers and purveyors whenever possible and we are the only store in town that is able to sell produce from an organically grown vegetable garden in our very own back yard!

We are honored to carry nearby friend's culinary endeavors; field-to-farm both local and regional. Produce for our salads and sandwiches from Hartshorn's, beef from Kenyon's, venison from Middlebury and varied hand crafted brews are only a few. With pride, we showcase a wide selection of local products available!

Sourcing locally just makes sense. We know who we’re buying from and can witness the quality and love put into everything our neighbors produce. Sourcing locally takes much of the transit out of the equation, ensuring freshness and reducing the overall impact on our environment.

Dozens of barns in our little Valley were built as dairy farms more than a century ago. Most can be viewed from the road. Many barns that are not still housing cows have been repurposed into innovative agriculture or artistic uses. They remain iconic reminders of our connection to the land. The 2016 Barns & Bridges self-guided tour is August 21; the tour is one of the events of the Festival of the Arts. valleyartsfoundation.org. The Bragg Barn, Bragg Hill Rd, Fayston. Built in 1909. Owned for years by the Bragg Family, it is now Ploughgate Farm Creamery, run by farmer Marisa Mauro. Purchased in 2013 with grants from the VT Land Trust, the VT Foodbank, & the MRV Planning district who provide funds to maintain historical farmland and foster growth of new ag enterprises. Farmer Mauro's artisan butter & cheesemaking is earning national attention. Find Ploughgate Farm butter at Mehuron's.

Kingsbury Barn, Rt. 100, Warren. The Kingsbury Farm in Warren was the first VT Land Trust farm in the MRV re-introducing agricultural enterprise to historical famrland. Lease terms? Tons of oganic vegetables, distributed to the VT Foodbank, allowing farmers Aaron Locker to rehab the farm structures and fallow fields. The farmers purchased the farm outright in 2015 and are expanding infrastructure and production. They also run the Muddy Boots CSA.

Mountain Valley Farm Barn, Common Rd., East Warren. A 100’ x 50’ post & beam structure that has been in continuous use as a farm animal building since it was built in the late 1800s. Currently it is the stable for draught horses and other livestock kept by the owners. This well-maintained barn has a picturesque cupola and breathtaking setting make it a perfect symbol of earlier agricultural times.

Round Barn, East Warren Rd., Warren. Built as a dairy barn in 1910 and beautifully restored eighty years later. Round barns were the cutting edge technology of their day, designed for more efficient use of lumber, space, and labor. Owners Kim & Jim Donohue now host weddings, wedding receptions, concerts, & art exhibits in its immaculate, beautifully lit space. Outlying meadows feature a Sculpture Stroll, and the Inn, an award-winning farmhouse B & B, hosts guests year-round. Knoll Farm, Bragg Hill Rd., Fayston. An 1830's 2-story barn is served by a “wharfin” (a covered entrance to the upper level of a barn) leading onto the 2nd floor, used as a retreat center where workshops & educational and children's programs are run. Owners Helen Whybrow & Peter Forbes raise organic high bush blueberries and Icelandic sheep due to the farm’s acidic soil and rocky terrain. Edgcomb Barn, Airport Rd., Warren. The Edgcomb Barn is the summer home to Phantom Theater. This is the third incarnation of a barn on the site, the other two were decimated by fire; this was the first barn in the state to feature a hipped roof. Lareau Farm Barn, Route 100, Waitsfield. The 1895 barn is used for storage at the American Flatbread Factory. Owner George Schenk generously opens it up for the Green Mountain Watercolor Show in July and the Big Red Barn Art Show in August. Highlights of the annual Festival of the Arts, the barn shows are history and creation in one stop. The property is a working farm, providing organic produce and sustainably-raised meats. Skinner Barn, Common Rd. East Warren. A beautifully restored 1891 dairy barn. Classic post and beam construction allows the upper floor, originally designed for hay storage, to be used as an assembly space for a wide range of functions from weddings & rehearsal dinners to theater productions and cabarets.

COV E R E D Most municipal covered bridges were constructed between 1820 and 1904. Not only do the roof & sides prevent heavy snow from stressing the span, the design creates a great place to leap into the river from, and a romantic shelter from the weather.

Warren Bridge

The Great Eddy Bridge

Finished in 1880, this bridge is short & simple. It features a single span supported by queen post trusses, and stands now as it did then, unaltered! Notice the differing openings at either end to accomodate an overhanging gable roof on its western side. This important symbol of the Town of Warren cannot be altered in any way without prior approval by a 2/3 majority of the town’s electorate!

Ca. 1833. The oldest operating covered bridge in VT, with the longest clear span of any Burr truss bridge in the state. It survived Irene, a destructive 2011 storm which caused considerable damage to properties in the area. A major symbol of the Mad River Valley, it continues its workaday life with considerable style and without complaint.

Tiny towns in rural Vermont towns often had half a dozen schoolhouses to accommodate far-flung pupils in the 19th century. The schoolhouses were often built on land not suitable for farming, logging, trapping, mining or any other profitable pursuit; they were built on tiny strips, close to the road, and frequently located at intersections so that the most children would be able to reach class traveling the shortest possible distance to school. Note that cemeteries were often established on the common land adjacent to the schoolhouses, which for contemporary visitors is an interesting juxtaposition. As with all of Vermont’s vernacular architecture, the schoolhouses tell a tale of the economics of the state. The economic boom fueled by logging and then sheep farming from the

The Pine Brook Bridge Built in 1855, is the only other covered bridge to stand in Waitsfield. It remains structurally unaltered and fully operational. SCHOOLHOUSES

1830s to the1850s meant that there was enough money to build sturdy, well-designed schoolhouses that saw more than a century of use. After the Civil War, industrialization in cities & the opening of the West kept “progress” away from the beautifully built towns & farms of places like the Mad River Valley. It explains why Vermont towns are so well-preserved and provide such an unspoiled glimpse into the lives of the past. More than 25 individual schoolhouses served the Mad River Valley before the schools centralized in the mid 20th century.
