AUTUMN 2017 19

Falling into autumn Resilientista, Autumn is finally here! Yes, autumn is my favourite season - the cooler temperatures mean less humidity and when you have naturally curly hair humidity free days improve the chances of a good hair day. The cooler temperatures also make dressing a little easier as layers of clothing can be added or removed to adjust to the changing cooler morning temperatures and unexpected hot afternoons. Oh and of course the ever growing selection of pumpkin spice everything, but know, there is actually no pumpkin in pumpkin spice - just lots of aromatic spices! This glorious season with all it's splendid colours is not just fashion, hair, and lattes - it's also a transitional time, easing us from the hot days of summer in preparation for the cold winter days ahead. I like to give my home a deep cleaning (much like in the spring) and also give my skin care routine a little updating - think moisturizing to combat the dryness of indoor heat and crisp days outside. And while the return of the fall line up of shows can have us curling up on the sofa with a blanket and hot chocolate - it's important to stay active - see page 15 for some ideas to keep moving through the fall.  A new season is also the time to review your self care plan and adjust as needed, perhaps your morning or evening rituals need tweaking; or as we crave heartier foods meal planning and market lists need to be updated to include some of the amazing foods of the fall - look for some warming foods on page 14, Maggie has shared a great article on how to use the foods of the season to your advantage.  For those who are going through challenging times autumn may feel like a symbolic representation of loss. Yes, the gardens are looking quite depleted and the trees will soon be bare. As the hours of day light lessen and with cooler temperatures people tend to retreat indoors, no more chats on the front porch with friends and neighbours or with passersby when working in the gardens - it can start to feel a bit isolated.  But, why not look at autumn as the symbolic promise that to grow healthier and stronger, just like the trees and gardens are releasing that which no longer is serving them, we must let go of what is not for our highest good. Use this time indoors to work on YOU, your self care plan, and setting intentions that you would like to work towards. Making plans with friends, or yourself, and family will give you something to look forward to. Staying active is important to maintaining mind, body and spirit balance. I've shared three things that I'm loving this season and one is an essential oil that I can't say enough about! - check it out on page 29. Have I mentioned that autumn is my favourite season?  How about you are you an autumn kinda gal? Until next time, Take Care of YOU!

Taking Charge of Your Financial Future By Charlotte Paul

Women have come a LONG way in so many areas of life, but most of us still feel lost, confused, and/or overwhelmed when it comes to our ‘big picture’ finances. But it’s 2017 and – in my opinion – high time for us to learn the ropes and take control. Anyone can do it – and don’t think that you need a ton of money, or that you are ‘too old’ to start. It’s not as hard as it may seem, and the payoff can be huge – I’ve seen firsthand the amazing things that happen when a woman takes control of her finances (and therefore her future).

3 tips for getting started 1. Start by doing an honest evaluation of what you have (or don’t have). To do this, you will need a complete net worth statement and a cash flow analysis. (Templates for both can easily be found via Google search.) Net worth is calculated simply by taking assets (what you have) and subtracting liabilities (your debts). A cash flow analysis breaks down your income and expenses for you. These are important because they provide a clear picture of your starting point, which is necessary to create the right plan. 2. Write down your goals and prioritize them. As a financial advisor, I often ask clients to think about, and identify, goals for the short, medium and long term as follows: a. Short-term: one to two years (for example, paying off credit card debt within the next 18 months; saving for a European vacation next summer) b. Medium-term: two to five years (for example, saving a down payment for a home; or helping to fund a teenage child’s university education) c. Long-term: six to 10+ years (for example, retiring in 10 years; buying a cottage in 15 years, etc.)

"Anyone can do it – and don’t think that you need a ton of money, or that you are ‘too old’ to start."

3. Create a plan that supports your goals. A goal isn’t worth much without a plan to get you there. Think about your financial plan as the roadmap that will take you from where you are now to your final destination (your goals). A financial plan should be revisited and revised annually at minimum, and more often for goals with shorter timeframes. You will likely want to work with a financial planner on this – most will be able to create a plan that is customized to your individual aspirations and financial situation.

For most of the women I work with, a wonderful sense of empowerment comes from facing their finances head-on, taking control, and creating a plan. So get started with the steps above and reach out to a financial advisor if you’d like some professional advice and support on your journey. Are You living Your High Heeled Life ?

10 Tips to live YOUR best life ...

       1. Believe You are Deserving of the Life You Want One of the main reasons you are not living the life you want is that your thoughts focus on all that you don't want. Everything is energy so the energy you put out there is what you will get back. Focus on the things you want to come into your life. Believe that you are deserving of the life you want to live.                                    2. Declutter Take a good look around your home and remove things that you no longer have use for or no longer serve a purpose. Your closet may be full of clothes and shoes - but if they don't fit, are in need of repair or you just don't wear them then it's time to repair, donate or trash them. Even people in your life can be holding you back from living your HHL. You know the ones that say "Oh, you will never be able to afford that" or "Who do you think you are" or they are always complaining about  not having enough. Their negative energy is draining you and you need all your energy to focus on positive things. By decluttering you are making room for new and wonderful things and positive people to come into your life.                              3. Quality over Quantity Invest only in the best that you can afford. It is better to save and buy one pair of great fitting jeans that make you feel like a million dollars than to have multiple pairs that make you feel mediocre. This applies to not just your wardrobe but to things for your home and friendships/relationships.

                                  6. Ask for Help Sorry to break it to you ladies - HHL women are human too! and there are only 24 hours in a day. Asking for help with housework, laundry, childcare, doggie care or with whatever else you may need is more courageous and classy than falling apart.                                 7. Body Mind & Spirit Taking care of your inner and outer self is key to living a HHL. Your body is a reflection of what you put into. Eat real food and drink plenty of water. And remember champagne is only 100 calories per glass. Exercise - if the gym is not your thing going for a walk, taking the stairs or doing an activity that gets you moving is what it's important. Get proper and sufficient sleep - it not only allows the mind to recharge it's the best no cost beauty treatment. Connect with your inner self - yoga,  meditation and a walk in nature (hug a tree, walk barefoot on the grass) are great ways to de-stress and connect inwards.

"A High Heeled Life is yours to define. It may have nothing to do with designer heels, fancy restaurants, and may be more about scoring a deal at Winners and attending a scrapbook class. However you define it, its about creating and living your best life at this very moment."                                8. Be Social Get out and discover new things, be around people (positive ones), create memories and have adventures. Make connections with people. Smile.

                          4. Look the Part Being well groomed is a must. Get a great hair cut or let it grow. What's important is that your hair is healthy, shiny and looks good (this means no roots showing if you colour). Always keep your nails (hands and toes) looking clean and neat. Look your best at all times ~ leave the yoga pants for yoga class. Always strive to look polished when you walk out the door. Instead of just a T-shirt and jeans for running errands add a jacket and up the look.

                            9. Time for Yourself Taking time for yourself is not selfish, it's a necessity. It allows you to dream, spark your creativity and connect with the person that is with you always, YOU!                            10. Have a Signature Trademark When you think of Jackie Onasis - large sunglasses or the classic shift dress; Audrey Hepburn the classic LBD. Whether it's shoes, clothing, accessories or a hair style have a signature  trademark people will remember you by.

                              5. Give Back Time is the most precious gift you can give another. Volunteer at a shelter, hospital, pet centre or other organization that is close to your heart.

You deserve the Royal Treatment... Cleopatra and Marie Antoinette, used natural ingredients to create masks and baths to help nourish and rejuvenate their skin. Add these to your weekly skin care routine and feel like the Royal Resilientista you are!

Marie Antoinette's Honey Facial Mask

Cleopatra's Honey & Milk Bath

2 egg yolks 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 cup honey, warmed in the microwave

The Legendary Queen of Egypt was known for her exquisite complexion and soft skin. One of her secret beauty treatments, the milk and honey bath are still being used today.

Combine all ingredients until well blended. Gently rub honey mask onto dry, cleansed skin. Let settle for 10-15 minutes and rinse off with tepid water. Or for an extra special facial treatment, dampen a towel (make sure to ring out completely). Microwave the damp towel on high for a few minutes until it is warm and steamy. Place the towel over your face and enjoy ! (about 5 minutes)

¼ cup of honey ¼ powdered milk or whole milk (Cleopatra used goat's milk) Mix ingredients together; add this to your bath water. Soak for 15-20 minutes, let your skin absorb the ingredients. Finish with a tepid water rinse, to wash off milk bath. Enjoy your soft, nourished and beautiful skin.

To add exfoliation to the honey moisturizing treatment, add 1/4 cup granulated sugar. The sugar will act as a gentle abrasive, helping to slough off the layers of dead skin that can make your complexion look dull.

Why these are fabulous for your skin: Milk, contains lactic acid, which helps to exfoliate your skin. The lactic acid in milk is an alpha hydroxy acid, which helps to cleanse the deepest layers of the skin. Honey is rich in vitamins and minerals (glucose and fructose) - nutrients that seem to be perfect "food" for your skin.

Home & Garden Fall check list Home

Fall is the perfect time to start preparing your home for the cold days that you know are coming.

Garden

1. Roof: check for any loose shingles, while a leaky roof is no fun, it is a lot less fun in the bitter cold temperatures. If you have a chimney check that the chute is clear. 2. Gutters & Down Spouts: remove any leaves, and debris that can prevent rain water from flowing properly. As the temperature drops any collection of water in the gutters or along the down pipe can freeze - the weight can bring down gutters, and down spouts. This is also a good time to check that both gutters and pipes are safely secured to your home, and are pointing away from your foundation and walkways.

1. Pull Weeds: pulling before they go to seed will help reduce the amount you will have to deal with next year.

3. Windows & Doors: check the seal and frames around windows and doors. Ensure any gaps are filled appropriately. This will not only help keep the cold air out, it will keep the warm heat from escaping through the cracks. Now is also a good time to give the windows a good wash inside and out (including the sills and tracks).

3. Tools & Pots: Clean all garden tools; sharpen pruners and lawn mower blades; and start storing clay pots inside.

4. Smoke & CO: Never forget when you last changed the batteries in these detectors. When the clock rolls back change the batteries.

5. Plant Maintenance: Cut diseased areas from perennials; after a frost, remove dead annuals from flower beds; remove all vegetable plants and fallen fruit; trim back perennial foliage to discourage overwintering pests; divide spring and summer blooming perennial plants; mulch rose bushes.

2. Planting: Now is the time to plant spring bulbs. Planting new trees and shrubs? - now is time to give them at least six weeks before frost starts setting in.

4. House Plants: as the temperatures begin to drop, especially at night, before bringing these darlings inside check for pests.

5. Store Away: The weather will turn quickly, now is the time to start putting away or covering outdoor furniture for the winter.

6. Watering: water trees and shrubs until the ground freezes. Turn off outside water connections and  drain garden hoses.

6. Be Prepared: Snow and ice can happen unexpectedly check your ice melting supplies (salt, sand etc.) and move the containers to where you will need them. Pull shovels, scrapers from the shed and have them at the ready.

7. Grass: rake and compost leaves; fertilize lawn; add sod at least six weeks before frost to allow time to attach roots.

7. Christmas Lights: Now is the time to get those lights up when the weather and temperatures are still pleasant. 12

Fall into

warming foods ... By Maggie Chilton

Hello Ladies and welcome to the start of late summer/fall, can you smell the pumpkin spiced lattes already? This is the time to either move away from your usual cooling smoothie to perhaps some warm bone broth or soup or to switch up the ingredients in your smoothie to include warming spices such as cinnamon and ginger. As this time of year of dryness foods that can moisten the body are a great addition, foods such as spinach, organic pears, organic apples, organic eggs, and almonds can be added to smoothies and meals.

Late summer is an often-overlooked season as we try to hang on to the last of the warm summer days and try to put off putting on those sweaters and scarfs for as long as possible. This time of year, is the point of transition from “yang to yin – between the expansive growth phases of spring and summer and the inward, cooler, more mysterious fall and winter seasons. A pleasant, tranquil and flourishing season” 1.

"Cooking during this time becomes slower, more focused and more deliberate. Food during this time is linked to the lungs, per Chinese tradition"

To attune ourselves to this time of year choose foods that harmonize and represent the centre, food that are seasonal will allow our bodies to attune to this season very well. Think cabbage, squash, organic potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, chestnuts, apricots, heartier foods and flavours are abundant in this season of “earth” and “metal”. Traditionally now is the time to look inwards and gather together food, warm clothing, books to read, getting ready to snuggle down and enjoy the stillness and beauty of winter.

3 Tips for moving into fall with ease and grace: 1. Use this time to connect with your surroundings and local farmer’s markets. Get to know what is in season and use these foods to plan your menu. Try not to buy foods that are not usually in season now such as strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus etc. Find out what is in season in Ontario here: http://ontariofarmfresh.com/consumers/whats-in-season/

If you are in menopause this is a wonderful time for selfreflection, a time to call your own, to use this time to delve deep within and evolve, to make plans for the spring that nurture and excite you. Cooking during this time becomes slower, more focused and more deliberate. Food during this time is linked to the lungs, per Chinese tradition, so smells and warm fragrant foods stimulates our appetites and “foods and roots thicken the blood for cooler weather” 2. In general, we want to be cooking with less water over a longer period.

2. Go for recipes that are slow cooked, this will allow the flavours to come alive and for you to get the most nutrients possible into your meals. Experiment with spices and herbs to bring out the warmth in your dishes and eliminate dampness. 3. Keep in mind portion sizes! If you need to buy smaller plates so you keep your portion sizes small, then do it. Fall is a time for “heavier” meals so we can’t usually eat as much as we did during the summer with such carefree abandon. At this time of year less is definitely more.

Limiting or staying away from too much raw, cold or sweet foods, which are known to be mucus forming will also help with fueling your digestive flame. Roasting vegetables, lightly sautéing or steaming vegetables will help break them down to become more digestible, warming and soothing to the digestive process. Roast in a good quality duck fat, coconut oil or avocado oil for added benefits.

Exercise your BRAIN ...  We live in a world that is becoming more and more dependent on computers and personal technical devices to "think" for us.  Add in the constantly growing expectation that we should be accessible 24/7 and your brain is often working on auto pilot. To function at its optimal the brain needs to regularly process new experiences and information, as well as time to recharge.

5 easy ways to practice brain exercise in your day ...

As we age ensuring that our brain is properly exercised becomes increasingly important. Exercising your brain helps your mental health and fitness in the same way your body benefits from physical exercise.

CHANGE IT UP: Break the auto pilot mode, by taking a different route to work; brush your teeth with the opposite hand; if you know a different language - think in that language.

"exercising your brain is fitness for your mind, like physical exercise is for your body."

LEARN A NEW SKILL: Every time you introduce a new experience/skill it forms new associations forcing your brain to accommodate new information and new routines. Learn a new language, take up a new hobby, go back to school and study a subject you are passionate about. HANDWRITTEN: When you actually put pen to paper you use a different area of the brain - from when you are just clicking away on a keyboard. Start a gratitude journal, send handwritten thank you notes, use an old fashion day planner. GAME NIGHT: Playing board games can be a fun way to strengthen your various mental functions. A side benefit it provides a social environment where you actually interact with others face to face. Scramble, Battle Ship, Chess, Checkers, Trivia are great ones to try. STOP RELYING ON TECHNOLOGY: Make a point of memorizing 6 telephone numbers of people close to you. When you call them, actually key in the number instead of scrolling to it or asking Suri.

LOVE & SEX |  AUTUMN 2017 19

surviving a 6-year sexual drought

THE MIDLIFE SEX CONUNDRUM By: Michelle Montoro Somewhere on my journey into midlife, I lost my libido. I don't know where or when or how or why. But one day, it was just gone. I had my children in my late thirties. So perhaps that was part of the reason. I was just plain old tired. Exhausted, in fact. And momming made me feel less sexual and much less desirable. Although my husband never lost his flare for compliments and adoration for me, I just couldn't seem to see it for myself. For the first 6 years after having children, my husband heard every possible excuse I could muster. I’m too tired. I can’t get out of mom mode. There’s too much on my brain to redirect my attention. I’m too tired. I have my period. I have a yeast infection. I’m too tired. I don’t feel well. There are too many other things I need to be doing right now. I feel disgusting. I’m too tired. I’m sure there are more reasons I have used. But you get the idea.

I have to admit that I have learned a lot from pornography. I have learned how to talk dirty. I have learned to think outside the box. I have learned that sometimes clothing is the sexiest thing I can wear in the bedroom. I have also learned that sometimes the sexiest thing I can wear in the bedroom is nothing at all. I have learned to role play. And I have learned that role playing is one of the best ways to get outside of my own head. Most importantly, I have learned that there is absolutely nothing wrong with what we do in our bedroom. Whatever it takes to get us there...as long as we get there.

"By opening the discussion, I have discovered that I am not alone. And neither are you!"

Seriously, I could go months without sex. And it wasn't good. It really wasn’t. It was not good for my mental state. It was not good for my husband’s mental state either. Resulting in a little bit of tension within our marriage around the issue of sex. I don’t want you to be mistaken, though. My marriage was and is very healthy and happy...outside of the bedroom. During this lull in my sex drive, we found ways to artificially ignite my flame. Oftentimes, pornography is the answer. For real. My biggest issue has always been getting in the mood. Turning off the brain. Redirecting my attention from the chaos of the day to sex. Just redirect to sex. While I love a gentle caress, a good long snuggle, or a intense massage, those things only make me relax to the point of just wanting to go to sleep. I need an artificial and immediate way of putting sex on my brain. And pornography does just that. 18

LOVE & SEX   |  AUTUMN 2017 19

And this is how we survived a 6-year sexual drought. This drought continued until just before my 43rd birthday. I recall my sister telling me when she was 43 years old that she suddenly experienced that increased libido that middle aged women often talk about. I thought it was a myth as I patiently waited for it to happen to me. And then it happened. To say it caught me off guard is an understatement. It has literally taken me by storm. I'm not complaining, I am just enjoying the ride. I don't have any explanation for this phenomenon. I really don't understand the midlife sex conundrum. I'm sure hormones are mostly responsible. I also have no idea how long this insatiable desire for sex is going to last, but I sure do hope my found libido sticks around for awhile.

So if you are in the same type of rut that I was in, just be patient. Both you and your partner. Because this midlife change is nothing short of amazing and exhilarating! When you hear women talk about the Fabulous 40’s, it is not a lie! This is by far the best decade of my life on so many levels. So I encourage you all to open the discussion on this topic. I know it may seem taboo, but for me the best solutions have come from talking about the issue. Too often, we remain alone inside our heads thinking there is something wrong with us. By opening the discussion, I have discovered that I am not alone. And neither are you! After the end of a long term relationship

THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING YOUR SEX LIFE BACK AFTER 40+ By Sandy O'Shea

Picture this. You’re over 40, been in a long-term relationship that you expected to last forever and then WHAMMO!!  It’s over unexpectedly.  Whether it’s the sudden death of a partner, a betrayal or an abandonment, they’re all shocks. What on EARTH do you do??? First and foremost, you take care of you.  You take some time out to heal but please do not get stuck there.  You are strong, capable and amazing woman; you deserve the best that life has to offer.  So you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and you put that relationship behind you.  Learn from it, mourn it, just don’t get stuck there.   Fast forward a little while.  This will be different for everyone. You are finally ready to get on with your dating life. We are sexual beings whether many of us are willing to admit this or not.   During the “recovery” phase of the end of a relationship, you may choose to remain celibate, you may choose to utilize masturbation and sex toys (I recommend this as there are many health benefits to orgasms) or you may choose to indulge in casual sex.  Of course Tinder is probably the most recognizable option for finding no-strings-attached hookups.   A word of caution regarding casual hookups after the end of a long-term relationship.  Do this because you really WANT to; not because others are doing it.  It may not be right for you. Do it because you love sex and you just want that release.  Even with casual hookups there is still a level of physical connection and that can release endorphins, lower your cortisol levels and just make you feel good.   Just make sure you treat it as just that - Casual sex.

By the way, if you’re looking for fun and not a relationship, might I suggest a younger man? Not only do they have far better stamina for the most part, they’re not interested in a relationship.  Middle-aged and older men have always had a thing about a younger partner and I think it’s about time that women benefit from that arrangement as well. Sex without commitment?  Awesome!!!  Just make sure it’s safe sex ;) A woman’s sexual energy can have a big impact on her success in life?  There’s a charisma that comes from sexual energy that exudes success.

The good news is that a healthy diet including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes will improve your sexual and overall health and increase your sense of well-being. Fish, poultry, eggs, milk products and cold pressed oils should be used in moderation.  Sugar, processed foods, cured meats, fried foods and chemicals should be avoided whenever possible. Dairy and gluten containing foods can have a negative effect on some people by increasing inflammation.  If you’re not sure whether either type of food is a problem, eliminate them.  If you feel better, don’t include them in your diet. Never forget during this process that you are the most important person in your life.  If someone or something does not serve you, remove it.  Life’s too short to let someone else hold you back.

health benefits of regular sex (with or without a partner)

It improves your immune system by increasing antibodies that help fight off colds, flus and infections. It boosts your libido – the more you participate, the more you increase lubrication, blood flow and elasticity and the more likely you are to want to have sex. It improves bladder control by strengthening pelvic floor muscles. It lowers blood pressure. It lowers heart attack risk by helping keep estrogen and testosterone levels in balance.   It lessens pain and can actually block chronic back and leg pain and even reduce menstrual cramps, arthritic pain and headaches.   It eases stress.  Physical intimacy … even hugging, can release Endorphins (the feel good hormone).  Arousal releases a brain chemical that revs up your brain’s pleasure and reward system It can also boost self-esteem and happiness.  It can reduce mild depression.

the Importance of Choosing YOU! By Michelle Peña

Growing up I was taught that people-pleasing was the right thing to do. It was modeled in my family life and stuck with me right into adulthood. People-pleasing felt good to me. So, I played the role quite well particularly in my romantic relationships which almost always ended in heartache. During this time of my life, little did I know, the need to people-please was providing me with a false sense of self-acceptance and self-worth.

The importance of choosing you means the willingness to allow what needs to fall away, just fall. It’s meant to. You cannot take it with you as you continue to evolve and move forward. Every day you make choices that either add to or take away from the woman you’re wanting to become or the woman you have worked hard to be.

This internal motivation to be accepted and approved of wiped out any concept of boundary setting which meant everyday I was giving others the permission to dictate my happiness. It continuously left me emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually depleted.

Every day you get to choose to either make a deposit to or a withdrawal from the woman standing before you each morning.

The fear of being judged, not accepted or hurting someone else, led me to make decisions where appeasing others became the norm at the sacrifice of my own happiness.

Every time you make a withdrawal you give a piece of that woman away. It may not be a big deal in the moment but overtime those withdrawals and deposits DO add up.

It silenced my voice, stifled my growth and ultimately created a disassociation from the self-assured woman I knew I was but was no longer recognizable.

It effects your vibration, your energy and how you are showing up for yourself and how you’re showing up for yourself influences everything and everyone in your outer world.

I was not choosing me but choosing others above me. The concept of choosing you is often negatively looked upon in our society. It is viewed as being selfish, ego-driven and/or narcissistic. Particularly for women, as many of us have been taught that the right thing to do or “our role” is to put other’s needs before our own. Which overtime evolves into holding back on what’s important to you in service of what is important to them.

So I ask you…. Is what you are choosing in alignment with who you are or who you are becoming? As women who value their well-being and evolution, we must be willing to continually learn about ourselves, challenge old beliefs, sort through our baggage, learn to face fears and doubts as we are consistently shifting and taking on new forms along the way in the trenches of a challenge and in the uprising during celebrations in our life.

But choosing you is quite the opposite. It is loving, essential and soul thriving. It uplifts, recharges, is alignment generating, cultivating inner happiness and fulfillment. It is beneficial to everyone in your life.

Without judgement or criticism. 22

LOVE & SEX |  AUTUMN 2017 19

"If you’re wanting to feel more centered and grounded in your life you can’t keep making decisions on the expectations of others." As you shift the choices you make must be in tandem with how you are evolving or else there is a feeling of being stuck. If you are wanting to attract a healthy relationship in your life you can’t keep making choices that keep you in drama-filled dynamics. If you’re wanting to feel more centered and grounded in your life you can’t keep making decisions on the expectations of others.

Make those choices that are a direct reflection of the woman in you.

If you’re wanting to be more confident you can’t keep making decisions against what you truly desire.

You are a woman if greatness.

The more self-supporting choices you make daily, the less you are depleting your personal reservoir and the easier it becomes to cultivate inner happiness and fulfillment independent of your outer world.

You are a woman on purpose.

Start small.

You ARE.

Ask yourself daily with every decision you make... Is what I'm choosing adding to or subtracting from my well-being? From choosing what to eat, choosing what to watch on TV, to what you wear or choosing to fully accept a compliment with a Thank You! To take it a step further. If you are growing and shifting towards greater self-love, begin with daily deposits of self-acknowledgement by finishing this sentence often… I love myself when ________________. If you are growing and shifting towards feeling more happiness in your life, begin with daily deposits of noticing all the good that happens throughout your day and feel the gratitude that arises. If you are growing and shifting towards feeling more empowered, begin with daily deposits of congratulating/treating yourself when you set boundaries or speak your truth. OR If you are wanting to improve how you view your body, begin with daily deposits of speaking to your body with kindness replacing your judgments. The moment you open your eyes to start the day, to the moment you lift your feet off the ground to go to bed, you have spent the day making choices. 23

The Power of Your Passion

Find Your Passion, Love Your Life! By Susan Sommers

Passion is an emotion that some describe as driving, fulfilling, and even deeply moving. It’s feeling that everything you’re doing is worth it, even if it can sometimes be tough. It’s the power source inside of you. Being able to identify and pursue your passion can bring you so much joy and meaning. It inspires you to achieve your fitness goals to strengthen your relationship with your body. Have you figured out what your passion is? Are you making the best use of your passion to move ahead?

and your mind. In life, downtime is critical to being able to push forward. Explore and connect You probably have many talents that you’re already passionate about. Start by exploring these talents and see how you can apply them to your health and fitness routine. If you enjoy reading, try listening to an audio book as you walk or run. If you like to dance on the weekend with friends, why not consider a dance class? Learning new things provides opportunities for you to challenge yourself and continue to grow, while deepening your passions and fitness routine.

What is my passion? At first, you may be unsure as to what your passion is. As you grow older and navigate your way through life, priorities change, goals shift, and passions may take on many different forms. A passion is something that needs to be nurtured and developed. Taking your first run with a friend may not feel like something you are passionate about, but as you stick to your goal and deepen your relationship with your body and with fitness, you will see your passion unfold.

Meditation is also a great way to increase your sense of peace and to keep you focused on the present moment. Download a free meditation app or listen to a guided meditation Podcast to truly centre yourself. One of my favourite apps is Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s SATTVA Meditation Timer and Tracker. I set aside 20 minutes each morning for his free meditation, The Journey Within.

Realize the power of your passion As you think back on your life, consider all of the things you used to love to do when you were younger – perhaps it was playing high school volleyball, being part of the track team, fishing with your parents, or taking ski trips with your class. Now, how can you revisit and expand on those passions? If you loved it then, chances are you will love it now! This is a great way to supercharge your fitness routines.

Share your passion with others I love being able to share my passion with others. Passionate people encourage other people to set goals, explore new things, and live a healthier and more fulfilling life. Now that you know what you’re passionate about and what you need to do to get there, spread the word! Encourage others to find their passion and to talk about it, in order to inspire and motivate those around them.

As you embark on your journey to embrace a healthy lifestyle, it’s important to consider different ways to reduce your stress and relax. A great way to tap into your passion is through creativity. What are the things that bring you a sense of calm, such as drawing, painting, or cooking? Set aside the time to be creative and to relax and unwind. This will enhance your commitment to love your body

Passion is contagious – I truly believe that! It’s a powerful tool for embracing our own power and creating a better life.

By Debra Jones

“I asked the leaf whether it was scared because it was autumn and the other leaves were falling. The leaf told me, “No. During the whole spring and summer I was very alive. I worked hard and helped nourish the tree, and much of me is in the tree…” Thich Nhat Hanh Do you feel sad when the end of summer approaches?  A new perspective may help you embrace the new season so you can flow into fall. In science class, we learned that the leaves change colour and drop because they no longer produce chlorophyll.  Why not? Because the leaves are designed to fall, to reduce the weight of snow on the tree, preventing it from breaking. Hmm!  Letting go is a necessary part of the tree’s survival!  Not only that, but the fallen leaves fertilize the ground that feeds the tree in the spring!  That’s a win/win! What if we apply this natural order in our own lives too?  Would we stand a better chance of survival and even grow stronger and healthier if WE let go of what no longer serves us? Fall is a time to harvest – not only the food we’ve been growing, but the wisdom we’ve gained.  Taking stock of what we’ve learned, clearing space, gaining clarity, to be ready for spring. You may experience this season with a sense of mourning for the vibrancy of summer, or have the perception of a lack of time remaining to accomplish your goals. A fear of scarcity perhaps?

Flow into fall

in 6 easy steps ...

The emotions of grief, loss or lack are explained in ancient Chinese Medicine. Autumn rules the lungs, and the lungs are linked to our emotions. This grief is a natural process that, if allowed to, can teach us how to let go - to clear out our physical and emotional space.  But we may feel we’re not ready and this can bring on a case of the ‘winter blues’.

6 Steps to Re-colour the Winter Blues Fall is the time to begin your internal growth – to become introspective – to cultivate your knowledge into wisdom. It’s time to let go of what no longer serves you, to make room for new experiences based on the wisdom you’ve gained up to this point. If we’re not used to living by the seasons, we may try to hold onto what is familiar to us.  This can get us stuck in an unhealthy pattern that can cause us grief and pain.   We can ease this pain and allow the grief to flow through us if we choose to shift ourselves and align to the energy of fall.  You can do this, it’s quite simple.   Right now, stop what you’re doing, take a step back and allow yourself some time and space to reflect and answer the following 4 questions:

Harvest the Bounty

1. What do you need to sustain yourself through winter? 2. What things, people, thoughts or emotions are you hoarding or holding onto too tightly? 3. Of these things, etc., what no longer serves you? 4. What could you let go of?

Fall is also time to reap the harvest from all your hard work. Finish up any projects that you’d started in the spring and summer. Review what you’ve accomplished.  Write down what you’ve learned, what you might do differently, what your next steps will be.   Use your new wisdom to know when to let go of any incomplete tasks if it’s no longer in your highest good to pursue them.  Trust that whatever you release is meant to go.  This brings you even greater clarity and empowerment.

THEN: 5. Give yourself permission to let it go. 6. Acknowledge your new clarity and celebrate your empowerment! (NOTE: Sometimes we could use some assistance or support in letting go.  If you need this, seek out a compassionate friend or healing professional to help you.)

Acknowledge your accomplishments and sense the fullness of your bounty. Then, sit back, relax, and allow the Autumn wind to lift and carry you forward. 27

Learning has

NO expiration date... By Julie Baumlisberger

I love each of the changing seasons, but Fall has always been my favourite. It is a season of contrasts, where we see (and harvest) the growth that has occurred since Spring, and look forward to relaxing and going within as we transition to Winter.  A time to assess what we have achieved and to look forward to the future. Traditionally, thousands of children across the country are returning to school.  Why not take the opportunity to go back to school ourselves? I have been a curious gal all my life, always asking questions and wanting to learn more about topics that pique my interest. Even as I was busy raising our family, I still found the time to explore and learn.  I took folk art painting classes, eventually becoming a teacher myself.  I explored many holistic health topics, including Touch for Health, yoga, Reiki and essential oils.  The latter two “casual” interests have now led me to teach both, to inspire and teach others, and to advocate for wellness through healthy lifestyles.  Just recently, I took an Axiatonal Re-alignment course with fellow Resilientista contributor, Debra Jones, just because I was intrigued.  Selfimprovement is self-empowerment.

Learning a foreign language can be a lot of fun, especially if you find someone to take it with you. Wouldn't it be great to brush up on your French, to learn Spanish for your next trip down South, or to try something completely different, like Swedish?   So as you see the kids bundling off to school, or you prepare your own, take the time to daydream a bit...what would you like to learn to do?  You might want to consider trying doTERRA's Inspiring Blend called Passion.  A blend of spice and herb essential oils, it may help rekindle excitement in your life, and help you find the daring to try something new.

So what have you dreamed of trying? On my bucket list is a gourmet cooking course, either Italian or French....ideally in one of those countries!  There are many continuing education classes offered at high schools and community centres, as less expensive options.  How about a meditation class, for those of you who struggle to work it into your daily routine?

I am looking forward to teaching many classes this fall, to people who have been too busy this summer and who are ready to be inspired. Go online, visit your local library, or ask around.  Explore your imagination and dreams, and I'm sure that there will be a teacher waiting just for you! 28

3 Self Care things Celia is falling for! A block in our creative flow can happen to all of us on our good days, throw in some challenging times and I can find myself avoiding writing for days. Knowing I could use some help focusing, a dear friend sent me a sample of this little gem! I have been applying a dab on my wrist a couple times throughout the day on my writing days when I felt stuck a gentle inhale - a few seconds and the creative juices began to flow.

Seasonal fruits - whether you are shopping the farmer's autumn markets or your local market, get your taste buds dancing and are a great way to get your daily fruit requirements. Some of my favs this time of year - pomegranate , persimmon , tangerines, and Portuguese pears!!!

Seasonal Fruit One of the best ways to help in the detoxification process is with daily dry skin brushing for about 5 minutes. Dry skin brushing stimulates the upper layers of the skin, improving the bodies natural detox function. An Epsom salt bath allows for minerals to "draw out" toxins from the body thus removing harmful toxins and returning balance the body. Take advantage of the relaxing time in the bath by applying a mud facial mask, before getting. Mud masks have great absorption properties. As they dry on the face, they absorb and draw up dirt and oil that may have gathered in small cellular crevices. 29

The Story of Life...My Journey!! Submitted By: Melanie Fry

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, to serve some sort of purpose, to teach you a lesson or to help you figure out who you are, or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be, possibly your roommate, neighbor, coworker, long-lost friend, lover, or even a complete stranger, but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment they will affect your life in some profound way. Sometimes in life, things may happen that seem horrible, painful, and unfair, but in reflection, you find that without overcoming those obstacles, you would have never realized your potential, strength, willpower, or heart. "If you want a rainbow, you have to put up with the rain."

Meet new people you have never met before, talk to people you have never talked to before, and actually listen to what they have to say, it might teach you something valuable, but always remember who your true friends are, "A true friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words". Let yourself live, love, and break free, make no boundaries, for you can accomplish anything as long as your heart is into it. This is your life, you run the show! Hold your head up because you have every right to. Tell yourself you are a special individual and there is no other out there the same as you. Believe in yourself, for it will be hard for others to believe in you. "If you don't stand up for something, you will fall for anything". You are in control and you can create your own life, so take chances, and go out and live it with absolutely no regret. "The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be".

Everything happens for a reason, nothing by chance or by means of luck, it happens because it is meant to be. Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness, and sheer stupidity, all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, whatever they may be, life would be like a smoothly paved straight flat road leading to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable, yet dull and utterly pointless.

"Everything in life is temporary because everything changes"

The people you meet that will affect your life, will be the success and downfalls you experience though out life, they are who will help you create the person you will grow to become, even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are the most important experiences because, "Failure teaches success."

Most importantly, if you love someone tell him or her, for you never know what tomorrow will bring. Don't let one moment pass because it could change you forever. Don't ever fear life, because "What doesn't kill you will only make you stronger". Learn a valuable lesson in each day that you live. "The rich person is not who has the most but who needs the least".

If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart, forgive them for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious when you open your heart, how you must only give to the ones who are worthy of being loyal.

Life is too short to take seriously, so remember to begin each day with a smile…"Never frown, you never know who might be falling in love with your smile." Everyone who walks through your door will make you happy, some on the way in and some on the way out…but always remember to leave the door to your heart open because you never know what may come your way. Believe in Karma, because what comes around really does go around.

If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you, but also because in a way they are teaching you about how to love, have trust and about loyalty. Give them that chance to give and receive what they deserve for and from you. "Everything in life is temporary because everything changes, that's why it takes great courage to love, knowing it might end anytime, but having the faith that it will last forever." Make every day count. Appreciate every moment and take from those moments everything you possibly can because that may be the only time in your life you will ever have that experience.

Angel Messages For Autumn 2017 By Jennifer Cobb

Hello Lovelies! Fall is my favorite time of year!  Mother Earth turns our surroundings into a new work of art each day, as we watch her transformation.  She shows us her layers of depth and beauty, right before shedding it all.  Bravely she stands, trusting the roots that she has grown to keep her steady and safe while the flurries and storms come to the surface. I’m ready she says…….  to shed the old, and to experience the uncomfortable, so that I can discover new growth.  Can we take inspiration for our dear Mother Earth?   Here is what the Angels want us to know as we head into the Fall  ……. A New Beginning – You’re at the beginning of a wonderful journey! This is the moment that you’ve been waiting for!  It’s a joyful time of new beginnings when you can make bold changes in your life. Lay down your fears, concerns, or uncertainties and embrace the unending possibilities available to you at this time. An unexpected opportunity may have recently presented itself to you, or one may do so in the near future. Take this as a sign from Heaven and your guardian angels that it’s finally time to break free and be the person you’ve always wanted to be. Don’t wait another day to begin your journey along the path to happiness! Additionally, the psychic in me sees you very ready as we move into Fall, actively reaching out for your goals. There is a radiant shift in your ability to speak your truth, and embrace change. But more than that you are the one initiating this positive change. You are actively seeking a calmer and more positive version of yourself. The inner embracing of change will also inspire some new physical changes too. The Universe can’t help but believe that you mean business, and opens its arms in full support!   Your angels surround you and encourage you to stay the path as there is much growth and happiness during this amazing shift. .  32

Chocolate Avocado Pudding  Submitted by: Sandy O'Shea

Ingredients: 1 small avocado or 1/2 large one 3 tablespoons of raw cacao 1/4 cup nut or coconut milk 1 teaspoon maca powder 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 tablespoon more or less pure maple syrup

Create the Magic: Combine together in a small blender (an immersion blender works perfectly)!! Suggestion: top with berries, coconut, chocolate chips, hemp hearts, pumpkin seeds or goji berries and enjoy!!!

Hormone Balancing, Energizing Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

1 cup almond and/or coconut milk (non dairy is important due to the inflammatory nature of dairy) 1 big tablespoon of raw cacao (not cocoa … that kinda defeats the purpose)(high in magnesium and gives you a little boost) 1 teaspoon or so of coconut oil (healthy fat, provides energy) a few shakes (or more) of cinnamon, depending on your preference (this is really good for blood sugar balancing) a dash or two of cayenne pepper if you can tolerate it (I can’t despite the fact that I love it) (metabolism boosting) 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon matcha green tea powder (full of antioxidants and a little boost) 1 teaspoon maca (I’m currently using a combination of 3 macas since there’s a minor difference between the red, black and yellow) (hormone balancing)

Create the Magic: Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to a gentle boil over medium heat. Suggestion: If you prefer a sweeter drink, you can add stevia or honey 35

Add chocolate chunks and whisk until chocolate is completely melted and milk is slightly frothy. Pour into mug and for a added extra,  use an electric frother to make it luxuriously creamy. Serve immediately. – makes  2 small mugs or one extra large mug.
