I lust for August and it would be a bust if this month’s edition wasn’t great (okay – the rhyming scheme there doesn’t quite work; at least I tried). I’m so happy it’s August. It’s my birthday month (I can’t believe how old I’m getting) and we have some exciting developments. As reported in June, we have the Diva of all Divas – Liza Minnelli. Ms. Minnelli, a childhood hero of mine, was, for this interview, gracious, poignant, insightful and everything a young boy growing up fantasizing about meeting her, could have asked for. We went for a retro look – because who doesn’t love retro? When I saw the photo we used for the cover – I had to have it. It’s Liza in a white pantsuit and it had a certain elegance that I wanted to convey. As icing on the cake, Ms. Minnelli gave us a personalized signature to use. It all came together perfectly and I think it’s our best looking cover to date. This is also our educational issue, which I think is quite strong this year. From survival tips from Eileen Wacker, getting into college, adult education to the best back-to-school items, we’ve got Our other interviews include Kitty Pilgrim of CNN fame - and now a two-time novelist - and Karine Bahkoum, a good friend and judge of Iron Chef America. Liza’s Back

(She Never Left) By Christopher A. Pape

Have you ever had the chance to meet your idol? The one person with whom you feel intrinsically connected; who when you see their face or hear their voice, a smile is formed. I recently had that opportunity. As the daughter of two of the most beloved Hollywood royalty, she is a testament to classic beauty, but also to perseverance and hardfought respect and admiration. She is one of only thirteen people to win an Emmy, Tony, Oscar and Grammy; she is the epitome of stage presence and a lover of good music. Of course the woman I allude to is Liza Minnelli. The daughter of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli she is a mainstay of Manhattan and American music lore. To interview Ms. Minnelli, was the crowning achievement of my career. At once she was poised, and hilarious.

Liza’s achievements are many to enumerate. Minnelli became one of the most versatile, highly regarded and bestselling entertainers alive. From movie success in The Sterile Cuckoo and Cabaret to live performances like Liza’s at the Palace (it won her latest Tony Award for Best Special Theatrical Event), she is known the world over for her stunning performances, legendary acting skills and over-the-top voice.

It is an attitude, a way of life; it is how she sees Ms. Minnelli that one is looking at someone extraordinary. I don’t think that this country can or will produce another Liza and that’s a good thing. She can’t be replicated or replaced. Sitting down with me, in a gorgeous silk smile, we talked on a wide range of topics, including music. “Charles Aznavour was one of my biggest inspirations and I loved working with him,” she said. We talked with a Z was a big success and many people know me just from that song.” I couldn’t resist asking about her mentor and friend of her mother’s, Frank Sinatra. “Oh, Uncle Frank was amazing. I really loved him and what a voice!” But, my favorite moment was when I asked her about the song Sara Lee (Liza’s signature sound blasting on my stereo is one of my best childhood memories) “Oh, you like that song? It’s great, isn’t it? It’s a Kander and Ebb classic and I sang it at Radio City Music Hall.”

This being Resident Magazine, we had to ask about being a New Yorker. With typical panache, Liza responded: “I stay in my apartment… and I when I go out, it’s passion; everything comes alive.” She went onto say that she loves Central Park and being in this frantic, frenetic yet somehow peaceful city. “I live in a great section of the city and I love going out, being around the energy is just so amazing.”

In fact, as a child she grew up in The Plaza Hotel. And some say that Kay Thompson’s children’s book series, Eloise at the Plaza, is based on Liza and her exploits as a young girl. But nothing is more emblematic of her

New York, New York. “Kander and Ebb New York City’s song and I’m so glad so many people have embraced it.” Being part of New York means that Liza is intimately familiar with the stage. Like her mother, she is the consummate entertainer; some might argue that the stage is her best medium. In 1965, she became the youngest woman ever to win a Tony Award for leading actress in her performance in Flora the Red Menace; it also cemented her relationship and admiration for Kander and Ebb. “I knew from that moment that I wanted to work with them for the rest of my life.” Many people, who were unfamiliar with Minnelli during her early years as a stage actress, soon fell in love with her as Sally many of her most successful collaborations, the musical had been from Kander and Ebb. It garnered Liza an Oscar and Golden Globe; and made her the only Academy Award-winning child of Oscar-winning parents.

But those are all things that happened in the past. What’s happening with her now? When asked, Liza smiles and gets excited. “I’m so busy. I love touring. I’ll be all over the country and the world. I’m going to Argentina, Chile and Brazil in September.” She will also be in Niagara Falls and Eastern PA in the next few months. All this proves is that she is in high demand; I don’t think she would have it any other way. We then moved onto a subject that I like to ask all of my features, charitable giving. Let it be said, that no one can ever say that Ms. Minnelli isn’t passionate. When I asked her about what charities she is involved with, she suddenly turned serious and looked at me with the most compassionate face I think I’ve ever seen. “Christopher, I care so a cure. I’ve also lost so many to that terrible disease.” Mention should be made that MasterworksBroadway has released Liza Minnelli’s historic concert album, Legends Of Broadway: LizaMinnelli Live At The Winter Garden. This long-awaited recording is derived from the original master engineered by Phil Ramone. The concert recording includes performances from Minnelli’s legendary Broadway recently discovered live bonus tracks that were recorded but not included on the original LP, including Stevie Wonder’s “You and I” and standards “It Had to Be You” and “My Shining Hour.”

Recent statistics, however, suggest that Buenos Aires is addressing this eternal tourism in Argentina increasing by 27% in 2010, and with visitors to Buenos Aires rising by over a million in three years, its Indeed, Buenos Aires is undergoing a process of reinvention. The best way to get there is on American

Add to this the fact that these restaurants are part of the highly regarded Morey’s Piers Beachfront amusement park, and the picture may already be painted in your mind before I even get into detail. Overlooking the beaches on the edge of the Boardwalk, Joe’s Fish Co is the ideal summer restaurant, perfect for a lunch in between riding the park’s roller coasters or for a dinner at the end of a hectic day. The restaurant is designed to make the most of its surroundings; with many windows and an upper deck on which to enjoy the view, you never feel completely isolated from this natural treasure.

In fact, playing golf could easily become a step-child to walking and admiring the natural beauty of Doonbeg and the sounds of the ocean lapping the edge of the nearby beach. Food served at the clubhouse is world class and the view from the dining room windows is nothing short of spectacular. It even led to a game of sorts for a group of guests one night. Someone commented that if you look hard enough as the sun dips below the horizon, disappears. While most others scoffed, another said he had not only heard that, but had tried to watch for it several times and failed to see The entire party sat, eyes glued to the horizon watching the setting sun. If you think that’s easy, try it some time. The sun sank lower and lower, the upper edge just kissing the horizon and then, as it sank from lasted barely a heartbeat. But, no question, almost everyone saw it and proved the legend

to be true. Ironically, what we failed to see back home, the green light was most certainly there on the Emerald Isle. Golf and pampering are not the only activities available at Doonbeg. A short hop away is the Danganelly Riding School. Much like the Green Light, if you’ve ever gone riding back in the states, this is a new experience. Climbing onto an English saddle is like planting your butt Western saddles have a pommel (saddle horn) for the squeamish to grab on to. The English saddle has no such comfort. There is also no rise on the back to settle against. Remember, around a horse. Then they insist that you wear an equine crash helmet looking somewhat like a suede covered pot with no handle; not even the dignity of a cowboy hat. But the ride makes up for it. Ireland’s countryside is arguably amongst the most beautiful in the world. The trek takes you through open land, past quaint farm houses, over peat bogs and onto very rural dirt roads. It is a ride to remember. Not far from Doonbeg are the famed and spectacular Cliffs of Moher. A short distance further on is the ferry slip taking visitors to the

beautiful Aran Islands. Our boat, The Happy Hooker, took us on a slow and relaxing voyage to Inis Mor (Innishmor), a piece of Ireland that time has truly forgotten. Visitors and residents alike traverse the island by horse drawn buggies that are out of an old John Wayne movie. Fields have been divided by families over the generations by creating stone wall dividers; animals wander freely and the island is protected by the ghostly remnants of an old fort peering down on passersby from an island high point. And among all this quaintness comes a blast of modern day. One of the drovers piloting a buggy passes by wearing a baseball cap with a New York Yankees emblem. Could have been worse. He might have had a Red Sox cap. No visit to Ireland would be complete without visiting its famed pubs. Anyone who walks through the door of any of these establishments immediately becomes family. The friendliness of the Irish people is on display in how they distinction between regulars and transients. Walk down the street and the music wafting from the pubs, the people singing and the overall feeling of warmth and hospitality are a

Color Theory for Interior Design

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ceilings are often overlooked as a great area to add just the right amount of drama to a room.â&#x20AC;?

Color. Most people love it, but shy away from it when it comes to using it in their homes. Color often evokes the thought that a space is going to be loud if too much is used. But that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be the case. The trick, between the really intense colors and those that are less intense. When this balance is successfully achieved the effect is more often times than not a peaceful, cozy interior.

Use neutral accessories and furniture pieces to balance a bold color on the walls. Simple white or cream is often the best compliment to a bold wall.

My dear friend and business partner, Jennifer Flanders, is an expert when it comes to creating well balanced colorful interiors. She is not afraid to mix intense colors pairing them with neutrals to create well balanced dramatic spaces. In this show house she adeptly uses rich color choices on the walls and ceilings balancing them with neutral furniture and a neutral carpet. The teal color on the walls reads almost as if it was neutral and helps the space to feel warm and inviting. The pop of chartreuse on the ceiling adds a nice unexpected pop of color.

A great trick is to use colors on the walls, trim and ceilings and then use neutral furniture thought the space to create the balance. The furniture should have touches of the colors that were used on the walls and ceiling to tie the space together.

Another great way to incorporate color into you home is with wallpaper. The dramatic patterns and colors of wall paper can help give any room that colorful pop. Consider using it on the ceiling, as seen here, for that extra unexpected flair.

Ceilings are often overlooked as a great area to add just the right amount of drama to a room. I love using a color or wallpaper on the ceilings or even switching up to the room but adds depth and a Still too nervous to go bold with color in your home? Try designing a neutral space with soft walls, and neutral furniture then adding your pop of color with accessories and smaller furniture pieces. To kick off the 50th anniversary of Shakespeare in the Park at the Delacorte Theater, the Public Theater has chosen well. “As You Like It” is a bucolic comedy that is ideal for outdoor staging in the middle of Central Park. The Bard’s comedies are somewhat uneven but, as directed by Daniel humor. The action has been moved to the American frontier in the 19th century and this conceit works quite well, especially Steve Martin and the magical set by John Lee Beatty. “As You Like It” has one of those unmotivated grudges that turns up in some of Shakespeare’s works. Here, it is the enmity that Oliver (Omar Metwally) feels toward his younger brother, Orlando (David Furr). There is also a pair of Dukes (both played by Andre Braugher), one of whom banishes the other. Intertwined are various romances and some crossdressing. Rosalind/Ganymede (Lily Rabe in another dazzling performance) is in love with Orlando. The hilarious Oliver Platt as Touchstone pursues goatherd Audrey (Donna Lynne Champlin). Finally, the shepherd Silvius (Will Rogers) falls for the shepherdess Phoebe (Susannah Flood), whose affections are initially directed

elsewhere. Also adding spice are Renee Elise Goldsberry as Celia, Rosalind’s cousin and companion (an unusually plucky rendition of a character who in other productions often comes across as bland) and Stephen Spinella as the melancholy Jaques, who delivers the Ages of Man speech (“All the world’s a stage…”). Director Sullivan even evokes laughter where there are no funny lines and the evening ends on a high note with a hoedown. The run is over but next up at Shakespeare in the Park is Stephen Sondheim’s fairy tale musical “Into the Woods,” which should be another winner. that is the inaugural production of the new 110-seat Claire Tow Theater at Lincoln Center. The work is a two-character play Steele) visits her uncle Sterling (Zeljko Ivanek), whom she had not seen for almost 10 years, at his isolated home in Costa Rica. Over the course of the play, secrets are slowly revealed as to the reasons for her sudden trip to see her estranged relative as well as his for moving to the jungle. The playwright develops distinctively different speech patterns for each of the characters and Becky and Sterling are portrayed

in all their complexity by the two stars. Anne Kauffman deserves credit for her thoughtful staging, as does Rachel Hauck for the ramshackle set, Japhy Weideman for the lighting and Leah Gelpe for the sound effects (particularly the iguanas on the roof). “Slowgirl” has extended its limited engagement run through Sunday, August 5. For the most kinetic show in town, rush over to catch the all-too-brief return of “Fela” (at the Al Hirschfeld Theater only until Aug. 4th). The musical is a biography of the late Nigerian musical star and political agitator Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, The charismatic Sahr Ngaujah (who alternates with Adesola Osakalumi) is the incarnation of Fela, the inspired singer-songwriter, who set himself against Nigeria’s corrupt government with his Afro-beat music. In the course of the play, he is arrested, his compound destroyed, his wives raped and mutilated and his mother (portrayed by the superb Melanie Marshall) murdered. Staged by the choreographer Bill T. Jones, and written by Mr. Jones with Jim Lewis, “Fela” is dramatically coherent, musically exciting and features an extraordinary collection of dancers. I have seen the show twice and it

August is my birthday month, so Christopher Pape, the wonderful editor of Resident magazine, thought it might be fun for me to write about my favorite celebration songs. While brainstorming my celebration list, I couldn’t stop myself from singing Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration” over and over, which is the absolute LAST song I want to hear on my birthday. Let’s celebrate. song to rock out to Lady GaGa’s “Just Dance.” I was listening to the song when an email popped up in my inbox, totally distracting me from writing this, and reminded me of my next board meeting for a charity I am involved with, Rock & Rawhide. Rock & Rawhide was started by my friends, Sean-Patrick Hillman and Kylie Edmond who, as stated on their website,, “aim to increase adoptions and quality of life for dogs and cats in shelters, by providing distraction therapy and noise/stress reduction through the donation of toys, bones, blankets, and more.” With the donation of these items, dogs and cats have something to play with, which reduces stress, and makes them more adoptable!

Once, when being corrected, Consuelo stated that she thought she was “doing right,” Alva retaliated with “I do the thinking, you do as you’re told!” Alva’s dominating spirit was not limited to the placement of objects in Consuelo’s room; she also dominated the placement of Consuelo’s life. Consuelo believed that it was Alva’s “wish to had in mind”. With her education coming to a close it was time to begin entertaining the idea of a husband. Consuelo, now aged sixteen, was taken on holiday by sea with her family as well as three other male companions (Winthrop Rutherford and O.H.P. Belmont among them). The Valiant, the newly completed Vanderbilt Yacht, was 2,000 tons, 331- feet long and would serve as the party’s mean of travel. They departed New York City on November of 1893, with India as their destination. In Calcutta, the party was guest to the Viceroy of India and his wife, Lady Lansdowne, and, during this visit, Alva expressed her love of the English way of life. During the conversations between Lady Lansdowne and her mother, Consuelo was sure that the possibility of her marriage to the Duke of Marlborough was discussed, as Lady Lansdowne was Marlborough’s aunt. The group traveled on westward and up to Paris where the

William returned to New York while Alva and her children stayed on in Europe. In Paris, Consuelo made her (debutante debut) to Parisian society where she danced with her (eventual) second husband, Jacques Balsan. Following the Parisian season she went with her mother onto a rented home on the Thames in England. Established in London for the season, Consuelo and her mother visited Minnie Paget, an Heiress from New York who had married a knighted English man. In her memoirs, the “Glitter and the Gold,” Consuelo recalls being taken to Paget’s boudoir as her mother and Minnie discussed and critiqued her as if she were not in the room. “If I am to bring her out,” Minnie told Alva, “then she must be able to compete at least as far as clothes are concerned with far better-looking girls”. .” Tulle must give way for satin… Naiveté to sophistication. “ Lady Paget was adamant. During a dinner party given by Lady Paget, Consuelo and Marlborough were introduced. Strategically placed next to each other Consuelo thought he seemed a “very young man,” although six years her senior, she thought him “good looking and intelligent”. Upon her return to New York City she had fallen in love with one of her family’s travel companions, Winthrop Rutherford. A handsome man a few years her senior from a perfectly respectable old New York Family and they became secretly engaged. Her mother once again took Consuelo to England. Clothing was ordered from Worth’s and once again she met Marlborough, this time at his ancestral home of Blenheim Palace. And once again she found him charming but

though her mother had invited him to visit Newport in the summer. Back in Newport for the summer season, her life at Marble House plans to marry Rutherford. The halls of Marble House rang as Alva’s reaction was to tell her daughter that there was madness in Rutherford’s family and he could have no children, and then stating that she would not hesitate to shoot the man she considered capable of ruining Consuelo’s life, followed by her faking a heart attack. (No longer able to handle the gloom and hurt that would fall to her beloved, Consuelo sent word that she could no longer marry Rutherford. Marlborough’s visit brought the anticipated marriage proposal and Consuelo accepted. At the wedding at St. Thomas on Fifth Avenue, Consuelo felt numb and her (Worth) veil shielded the tears she cried behind it. With the marriage Consuelo became the ninth Duchess of Marlborough and the Duke now had her dowry of 2.5 million dollars to continue to live in the pomp and circumstance he deemed necessary. After Consuelo preformed her duty to the Churchill family that she dubbed “the heir and spare,” the Duke and Duchess began to live separate lives and the marriage would dissolve into a very public divorce later to become an annulment. Although the New York of her youth is gone and few of the glittering mansions are left on Fifth Avenue and the Vanderbilt name no longer dominates the railway industry, her lineage as a Vanderbilt and New York heiress lives on as her blood now runs through the

After the 4th of July, it feels like summer is ending and we have to start signing up for activities and get a fall schedule nailed down. The thought of summer’s demise, homework arguments, and having to get everyone up and out the door every day, on to-school already. Before the sweetness of a routine settles in, getting through the back-to-school process rely on tips like clothes out the night before, snacks and lunches prepared in advance, and easing into earlier bedtimes - but modern technology and tech-savvy teachers call for new strategies. Here are some survival tips for the modern parent.

Be savvy about technology and ensure your child knows the electronics usage policy at the school. Technology is moving at lightning speed and the school policies change frequently to keep up. Know what the rules are for phones, texting, going on the internet, school laptops, iPads, iPods, etc. Your child’s electronics should be engraved with their name or scratch their name on the device so they can prove they are the owner. Today, many schools have gone paperless. Don’t be the parent who doesn’t read email.


Eliminate the 50+ pound backpack your child drags back and forth to school. Electronics and other valuables will get smashed from the shear weight if dropped. E-mail the teacher for the list of books, go to Amazon. com and buy used

textbooks. Keep this set at home – at a cost of $5-$8 each, you will eliminate many nights of angst – never a forgotten book for homework or to study for a test. In a few years, textbooks will be on laptops or tablets so this is a transitional strategy. Also, pack the backpack together so they have everything

Lock in the fall schedule. We all hear about how our kids are overscheduled with activities. My kids have lots of activities because these are essentially modern playdates. They participate in activities with their friends. I think busy kids tend to manage their time better! Yes, I said it – go ahead and schedule your kids. Get them to own the fall schedule. I used to beg them to go to Karate or piano or swimming. These lessons and activities cost

money and I do not want to be the police let them choose between options we outline but it is their routine. Many parents are too invested in their kids’ routines and the kids are not invested enough.

His vision is to make this all too envied artform accessible to male and female dancers of all ages and of all abilities, all under an exclusively world class tutelage. This is the rasion d’être of an institution established more than half a century ago by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino, and now with Christopher D’Addario at the helm, there are sturdy and skillful hands guiding this titanic of ballet schools. Now, perhaps more than any recent year, is an exciting time for the school as they are taking the relatively novel step of expanding the children’s Young Dancer Program for The Nutcracker. This move entails an opportunity for even the most inexperienced of ballet dancers to perform in and be a part of the fall production of The Nutcracker in a major Manhattan theater. The Joffrey Ballet School adheres to a ‘family-centric’ policy, to quote D’Addario, and so the spring production of Snow White will follow on from the approach to the show in the fall by selecting novice and seasoned ballet dancers alike, ranging all ages from as young as three years old right up to seventeen. This is a decision that is bound to generate excitement amongst all the dancers. Such anticipation has been heightened even further other than Cirque du Soleil as a partner of this institution. This has led to a summer intensive at the University of California Northridge, where Mia Michaels and Mandy Moore -from ‘So You Think You can Dance?’- both teach thirty children in class, gearing them towards performing in the Cirque du Soleil itself. While this is a fantastic opportunity, the school does not seem intensive plan and has one instructed by Jamal Simms in Georgia, as well as in Florence, Italy and an exclusive place at the renowned Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Russia. The Joffrey Ballet School is proud of what D’Addaro calls its ‘worldwide footprint’, with dancers from Australia, China, Japan, Spain, Italy, and South America all vying for a place at this establishment. Their summer intensive programs are highly sought after, with ten thousand auditions competing for relatively limited space; above all, their elite dancing class is highly selective, more so than any similar school. Statistics are not always the most reliable basis for support and are often vulnerable to interpretation, but there for a good reason. Perhaps the ultimate aim for any student at the school is to eventually qualify for the touring company program, comprised of top-level trainees who are paid to tour the nation.

Chinese Explorations By Demetra M. Pappas

The Sterling and Francine Clark Museum in Williamstown, Massachusetts, is spending the summer on China, with the anchoring blockbuster exhibition, “Unearthed: Recent Archaeological Discoveries from Northern China” (through October 21). Another exhibition documents the trip of Sterling Clark and Arthur de C. Sowerby, who as gentlemen adventurers and explorers, went to the Chinese provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu during 1908-1909. They crossed China’s northern frontier, covering some 2,000 miles of previously uncharted territory, by mule and on horseback. In 1912, the pair published a travelogue/documentation book which the Clark has reissued to celebrate its centenary. Through Shen-Kan: The Account of the Clark Expedition in North China, 19089, documents their adventures (they had misadventures, too – the trip was cut short because the cartographer was murdered after going out alone one night). “In Shen-Kan: Sterling Clark in China,” (through September 16) has antique instruments from the trip, as well as maps, original photographs and samples of wildlife specimens that they brought back to the United States. However, there is another story of the ethnographic expedition, more recently done in 2008, by two lovely young women named Ginny H. and Victoria T., Oxford University students who went from New College to the college of life to retrace Clark and Sowerby’s trip. The origins of this were

in that time honored student activity of a (procrastination) break from exam preparation. Ginny was studying for chemistry exams, in “an old map room,” and started looking at some of the maps. Fascinated by China, she came upon the original version of the book and its “amazing” map. Deciding that the story was more exciting than the exams she was cramming for (and ultimately did well at), she started reading, and found inspiration for an adventure of her own. At a college watering hole, Ginny easily persuaded Victoria that they should retrace the trip. They wrote a proposal, asked for funds (which they got), took courses in mountaineering and emergency medicine and went off to China with a friend who spoke Chinese and could interpret for them. Using cheap bus and train transport, the trio traced the entirety of the route for eight weeks. They blogged about their representation of the trip that Clark and Sowerby would have found astonishing. They also annotated copies of Clark and Sowerby’s book, documenting their ethnographic experiences 100 years after the original Clark expedition. And me, I am going to assign my sociology students, ever interested in travel, to write a proposal of their own – and hope some follow in the inspirational footsteps of these young

It’s now easier to get into most American colleges than it was 50 years ago. Still, it might be time to panic, or at least start writing one hell of an admissions essay. At places like Columbia, Harvard and MIT, acceptance rates have never been lower, hovering at 6 to 9 percent. It’s no surprise, then, that the application process begins long before senior year for many New York area high school students hoping to gain admission to the most prestigious universities. It’s important to get involved outside the classroom early, as the eight Ivy League schools, along with top liberal arts institutions like Williams and Swarthmore, activities. But not too many. (One student hoping for admission to Cornell listed 17 activities in a recent post on College parents and students discuss the college say that rather than becoming a member

of every club at their high school, students should seek leadership roles in a few projects they’re passionate about. Better, perhaps, to show you’re capable of sticking with something for a meaningful stretch. After all, how much time could our Cornell hopeful possibly devote to marching band, softball, swimming, student council, Future Business Leaders of America, National program, just to name a few? Standardized tests like the SAT are And while their importance is sometimes downplayed, the reality is that top schools rarely accept applicants without top scores. At Columbia, the middle 50 percent of admitted students scored about a 2200 on the test last year, or better than roughly 95 percent of all test takers. It’s no longer just the Ivies that look closely at these scores. At Amherst College in Massachusetts, a leader among liberal arts schools, mean scores of accepted students have risen to

classes and tutors to help raise scores. So many, in fact, that it’s now a $2.5 billion a year industry. While the value of these resources is debatable, there’s no shortage of available help: look no further than the College Board, the administrator of the test, which offers many classes and books to help students prepare. Though without top scores, grades, or eye-catching accomplishments, students sometimes still manage to sneak into top schools. They master the timeless art of the essay. As the fall semester approaches, a new crop of Columbia University undergraduates has already embarked on an epic journey: to read Homer’s The Iliad. Annotating Achilles’ and Agamemnon’s adventures is a rite of passage for most Columbia students, who arrive on well-thumbed copies of the epic poem. And yet for an increasing number of these students, this epic adventure At the School of General Studies at Columbia University and its peer institutions across the country, adult students are increasingly pursuing liberal arts degrees. As college costs rise, some prospective students have put higher education on hold, taking jobs out of high school and taking to a university setting later on in life. Another percentage of adult students have had personal or professional obligations delay their higher education, including military service or family matters. Still others have sought out creative or athletic opportunities prior to enrolling as an undergraduate. Among these students, therefore, are world travelers and web entrepreneurs, supermodels and service members, competitive cyclists and classically trained pianists – all of whom, despite their diversity, share at least a one year break in their educational careers and, more importantly, a desire to learn. These are students like Will Tant, a surfer, model, and philanthropist who, after 15 years of traveling, is now seeking an undergraduate degree at Columbia. Or Barbara Tiye, a percussionist, vocalist and free-lance teaching artist who has toured with the likes of Pete Seeger and Kurt Vonnegut. Having logged hours in the “real world”, these adults students are now exploring the world of academia (and logging plenty of library hours along the way). According to Carole Aslanian, senior vice president of of all current college undergraduates are over the age of 25. My sociology students explore culinary culture and travel, easy entrees to compare cultures. This semester, educational uses and social responses to community gardens n Shreveport, Louisiana’s Stoner Hill neighborhood provide a vehicle. Stoner a grocery with available produce within one mile. Education as a social institution is something my students relate to, and they have all been through elementary, middle and high school. Whether a student is descended disadvantages or an international student or a student athlete, the Valencia Park Community Center’s Youth Garden and Urban Farm offers lessons in curricular units. Dr. Grace Peterson, an Extension Agent of Louisiana State University’s Agriculture Center, describes herself as a garden based nutrition education/food system expert. She created an after-school program for 25 students (class-sized), which students attend twice weekly, supervised by a staff member and 3-5 volunteers (ex-teachers and master

gardeners). Students range from elementary to middle to high school. Students learn gardening, cooking, watch local restauranteur demonstrations take classes in nutrition systems (production, processing, distribution, acquisition, consumption and waste) to study (and prepare) food from seed to plate, and give periodic neighborhood “tastathons.” Ms. Angie White, Chair of Slow Food North Louisiana, is thrilled to see (and help sponsor via fundraisers, most recently a “rice and beans” event) students learning how to grow and prepare foods that follow the 6 components of healthy food (health promoting, sustainable, diverse, just/fair, economically balanced and transparent). She introduces chefs, such as Jason Brady (owner of Shreveport’s acclaim-deserving Wine Country Bistro). Brady went from giving a brief cooking demonstration to “leftover” produce at the week’s end (to use at Wine Country Bistro, such as collards from which he makes an addictive amuse bouche) to holding fundraisers at Wine

Country Bistro to inviting students to tour the restaurant to see their produce used in a real world environment. One high-schooler I met wants to intern at Wine Country Bistro, and, has been studying cookbooks and the Food Channel, with the stated objective of becoming a chef. Student goals/outcomes are a common theme at the Youth Garden and Urban Farm. One 16-year-old, asked how participating in the summer program (in which students receive stipends -- courtesy of White’s and Brady’s respective fundraisers -- from which students are taught to prepare budgets for school supplies and clothing, then taken shopping) mentored a 14-year-old. The elder instructed him to go to college or the military, get training for more money than a straight-from-high-school job. What

Kitty Pilgrim of CNN fame is now a published novelist. And I’m jealous. I’m jealous of her beauty, talent and wherewithal to sit down and actually conceive of and actualize her two novels, The Explorer’s Code and The Stolen Chalice. Having invited me to her stunning apartment on the Upper East Side, I knew that I was in for a treat when her French (yes, actually

French) housekeeper served me iced tea. From there, Kitty and I had a pleasant and lengthy conversation about her journalism career, her novels and what makes her a New Yorker. She promises she will write about her travels for the magazine next year (I’m going to hold her to it). Read and enjoy! I know you will like it as much as I liked interviewing her!


Resident (R): What does it mean to be a New Yorker? KP: Oh I’ve been a New Yorker all my life, actually my family has been here since 1630, spanning 16 generations. I have lived all over the world and New York is always where I want to be; even when I was in Tokyo for example. I have lived on the Upper East Side since 1977, and had to move to Atlanta for the CNN morning show for two years, and every night my sons used to watch Tom Brokaw because they used to have this bump shot at the end of the New York skyline, and then the skyline came up and we used to say ‘there is our beautiful city’. We were there for two years Hotel, it was right in our neighborhood and so the boys used to play with their friends, so we never really left.

R: Tell me how you got into journalism? KP: I was studying Russian, and was interested in the economy and was at Columbia at the Harriman Institute and at that point the Soviet Union started to dissolve so I was right at the cutting edge of the transformation from communism into my skills exactly matched the world at that time. So a lot of economies were closing and a lot of closed economies were opening like South Africa’s apartheid, so I ended up doing political economy with CNN for several years. R: So they hired you as an expert? KP: No they hired me as a production assistant, CNN had 35 people at the bureau, and it was so new at the time and no one had heard of it. I was production assistant for all of 10 minutes then they made me a producer. R: And so you kept moving up the ladder. KP: Well I was very focused on international developments so I would always pitch what’s going on in South Africa; the whole world was moving to an economic based system and I was right at the start of that so I could

do economic stories internationally and I was sent on assignments. It was perfect. R: The transition from being on air to becoming a novelist is huge, was that KP: It came naturally. I started this novel after work, I would go upstate to my house in Rhinebeck and I would write this novel on the train. I didn’t think it would get published; it was just for my amusement. Now the second one has just come out.

“The Stolen Chalice” A Kitty Pilgrim Novel

I had this romanticized idea of Harold Carter and the King Tutankhamen discovery and all this Victorian/Egyptian stuff, so I thought I’d bring this all together in a modern context with a terrorism theme and some old school Egyptian lore. I spoke with the Brooklyn Museum about how they examine mummies with CAT scans and DNA testing. All mummy books are all about curses and that nonsense but modern science brings it to new light and makes it relevant. So all my books take an old Victorian theme and update it.

R: What’s your day like writing; do you wake up and start writing immediately? KP: Yes, I write in my bathrobe. I write, breakfast, shower, write, but I mostly write and that’s what I did at CNN I got up and I wrote all day long so it’s not that different except now I’ll go to the Met to research ancient Greek artifacts. R: Do you keep everything you write?

stream. So each scene has a beginning and a resolution and each scene has a point of view either from Cordelia or John. There is a reason for the scene; whether it is to let my reader relax and enjoy a lunch in or to move action forward. Every scene has a mission. I’m very analytic about it, perhaps overly analytical. I talk to other authors and some write 200 pages then decide it doesn’t work. How could you do that? That would drive me crazy. My book is written for commuters or moms who need to pick up kids so each scene is in a different place and then it goes about three pages. You can put this book down any time and not get lost when you return.

R: Are you sure? KP: Yes (laughs). R: You must do a lot of research when you write a book. KP: Yes I do tons. I go everywhere before book, and so I go to these places and shoot videos. Deep research is needed on the theme of 1918 pandemic, for example, for which I studied old army medical records. is essential. R: Do you think the video aspect that you add is something different for an author? KP: book on Kindle versions. One of my videos for The Stolen Chalice went viral and got 208,000 hits, so it is working. The last scenes of The Explorer’s Code seemed to trigger interest in the global seed vault. R: Are there overlapping characters across different titles? KP: Yes there are two characters that are the benchmarks. John Sinclair, the handsome dashing archaeologist, sort of tall, dark, handsome, and then Cordelia Stapleton is an oceanographer and she is equally as strong as the male protagonist. So there is male and female, earth and water, working together to actually solve the mystery through the thrillers, the resolution. I got irritated by the typical male dominated thrillers where the female takes a very passive role, and the guy just shoots through and saves the world. A lot of smart women like thrillers but they want more female aspects to them, so I write one scene from a masculine point of view and one from a feminine. So in The Stolen Chalice I mix it up and write romantic scenes from a masculine

Alexia Landeau, of 2 Days in Paris and Marie Antoinette fame, has just co-written and starred in a new movie aptly named, 2 Days in New York, a sequel to the Paris hit. As a New Yorker with French roots, she is able to move between both worlds seamlessly and does so in both movies. She sat down with us to discuss being a New Yorker, her life as a movie star and a mother and her new upcoming projects; the whole time she was playful, intelligent, charming and exquisite. I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed speaking with her; I’m looking forward to meeting her at our big soirée in November. Resident (R): So tell me about your new shows?

R: What do you think it means to be a New Yorker? AL: It means that you’re incredibly used to external stimulus; that you’re very adaptable. I believe when you live in New York you can live anywhere, so I feel it’s your best passport to a life anywhere else, if you can make it here then you can make sense of your life anywhere else. R: And you live in LA now? AL: No I live in Brooklyn. I lived in LA for seven years then moved back last September. I missed New York, it’s hard being away for long.

AL: More as an actress because that is what I’ve been doing for the past 10 years and the writing thing has only happened in last two years since I co-wrote this movie. Now I’m getting some writing gigs; I’ve written some stuff that’s going into production. R: And you were born in France? AL: No I was born in New York to a French father and I grew up in France and stayed there until I came to college here.

R: So how do you make it in LA? AL: My gosh, I’m not sure I know that! The key to keeping your sanity is to have a really strong social system. It’s such an isolating city; I think the importance of having a strong social base is the key to keeping sane. I love LA but I think LA is just really alienating. Actors don’t want to leave because it is the heart of acting business. R: On another note, you must have been proud that movie opened in Sundance and Tribecca. AL: saw it, which was exciting in front of such a big audience. Sundance is an acquisition market so there was that worry of whether we could sell it or not, so the whole sort of creative experience got mitigated a bit by business concerns. In Tribecca, however, they already bought the movie and the response in Tribecca was tremendous, so we weren’t worrying while we watched it. Cowriting the movie is really rewarding; as an actor you just see how you do scene by scene, but it’s something else when you know the whole thing was helped to be written by you.

Alexia Landeau (AL): It’s a new movie called Days of New York, starring Chris Rock and Julie Delpy coming out August 10th. It’s a sequel to Two Days in Paris, which was about a couple in France; an American dealing with a French family. This was his girlfriend’s family, so you see all the cultural clashes. And so this is the converse- a French family coming to New York. Most of the comedy derives from Chris Rock trying to make sense of the father, sister and sister’s boyfriend. He is seeing her girlfriend in a new light as she is reverting back to her old French ways and, of course, she acts a bit differently with her family. So this movie looks closely at how you mesh who you are as a daughter and sister with who you are as a wife and mother. R: I know you’re an actress as well as a writer but do you think people see u as a writer or actress?

R: Who has been your favorite actor to work with?

R: What do like about Brooklyn? AL: I have a child now, a three year old, so I felt like making him leave LA, which has so much space compared to the East Coast, but I felt in Brooklyn there would be some more space than Manhattan. I was nervous coming back with a child because I was used to going out a lot while I was there as a single woman, so I felt Brooklyn was best solution to that. R: And how has he acclimatized to that? Is he doing well? AL: Yeah he loves it, it’s beautiful. I was

AL: I think Julie Delpy because we wrote movies together and we’ve become good friends, I think she is the most collaborative. A couple of years ago we worked together and it was great so I’m looking forward to the next one. R: Anything new that you’re working on? AL: I am doing stints as an actress; I’m working on a feature on this actress who is 37 and getting aged out of business and how she is trying to ‘overcome’ that. It’s about this whole idea in LA, that if you are past 25 you are suddenly considered old. The movie deals with this. Just because of the age she is being treated a certain way so I think it’s interesting to look at this.

with butter and garlic, so when I was born I wanted garlic not milk! I grew up in Switzerland, and I was exposed to many different cuisines as a baby; my father was Coptic Egyptian, my mom was American, and my nanny was Spanish. On top of all that, our cook was from Egypt, so there were many different foods. My nanny used to make brains with avocados and potatoes for example, it was all very exotic. My Dad would always take me to restaurants whenever I was with him. He encouraged me to order different things and taught me to be open to new foods. I guess food is just in our family; we are all good cooks. I didn’t know there was such a thing as food PR, I actually came into that after trying some truly delicious food by the great Alfred Portale at the Gotham Bar

and Grill. I raved about his food and told him he was a genius, at which point he turned to me and said that he wanted me to work with him. After some time I then decided to go on my own, I wanted to offer consulting services for restaurants, so that they could be ready before they opened. I menu and making sure food is in season so they are ready for the critics. When I opened KB Network News, Bobby Flay was opening Bolo and came to me and said ‘I really want you to open Bolo with me,’ so I did and I was really happy to be a part of that because he really helped to introduce American cuisine to the world. It was all just me, I didn’t even have to apply myself it was all very genuine –I just love being involved with food- and my

chefs worked off my enthusiasm. I love creativity in food. I just want food to make people happy and help create moments that make you feel good and happy. R: What makes you different? Why do clients seek you out now? KB: I don’t know what the exact formula is; it’s just genuine enthusiasm and combined with culinary expertise. Plus knowledge of PR, knowing how to write a good press release; we look at why it is news worthy and we only work with things that we are excited about. We understand what the needs are and we want our clients to be successful. We want people to go and experience what they have to offer. They consider us their insurance policy. Having said all that I think the important thing is to have the passion and knowledge. R: You keep clients for a really long time,

much over these 20 years. There is so much going on now, there is designing, there is writing, there is creativity, so we

are always looking at what is new and interesting and how we can use these to help the clients. You’re only as good as last project; be the best that you can be every day, that’s how we conduct ourselves. We help them grow their businesses. We work very closely with them and highlight the issues that need to be addressed. Anyone can open a restaurant and have a good run, but what is important is longevity and that’s what we aim for; to get the now with social media and everything it has all got a lot harder because you just can’t mess up! Perfection is what you have to aim for. You only get one chance to is truer than ever. R: How did you get on Iron chef America? KB: Well I already had a reputation for loving food, but it all really happened because I grew discontent with media dinners –I just found them too hectic and felt that journalists were not getting the full experience- so I began organizing my own media dinner, in which journalists can sit down together can get the VIP

treatment, to really maximize their experience of the restaurant. And it was at these dinners that I became very friendly with people, one of which was one of the former producers at the Food Network, and I had been working with Todd English, doing PR for him. So I got chatting with this producer at a Brazilian restaurant and kept saying that I want to be a judge and that nobody can talk about food like I can -and I drove him insaneso he agreed and gave me a chance. They were impressed with how I could actually say why something is delicious. R: How did you come up with this idea of a media dinner? felt the cocktail event was fun but I wanted the press to feel important like the other customers and to get the authentic experience; you need the sensory experience of it all. So many people, as a result of my media dinners, are friends now and still in touch and I think that’s people, so chefs can focus on journalists there and show rest what it is all about.

Meticulous and thorough, the entire staff know the ingredients of the dishes; no mean feat given the many changing faces of the menu. With the number of restaurants in Manhattan so high, every establishment seeks individuality, an identity, or a claim to uniqueness, which is exactly why ‘you can get anything you want’. And, if what you want is a great meal in a warm, welcoming and genuine atmosphere, then Vai will provide.

According to mainstream Western thinking we’ve evolved to new heights of thinking; we are at the summit of thought and no other previous age can compare. The thinking goes – we’re constantly instruments, eradicating diseases and increasing the longevity of human lives – we must be the bees knees; we must be at our apex. But I couldn’t disagree more. I am a man of the arts; a humanist who’d rather have no technology and a good book than the latest gadget. I know to the lovers of Apple, Wall Street bankers and all those that are slaves to the latest fad that I am worthless. I can’t do differential equations; I can’t engineer something; I don’t know what a credit default swap is and I could almost care less about the ‘newest’ pharmaceutical to hit the market. To them, I deserve to earn minimum age – while they eat their caviar and deign to tell the rest of us how to live. No, I am a man of letters. I read Machiavelli and recite Dante. I wish I could write like Virginia Wolf and I emulate Yukio Mishima. I am in awe of Da Vanci and a lover of Botticelli; and I am a devote of Verdi and interested in learning more about Pergolesi. What happened to these great thinkers? How have we become so devoid of true artistic and creative genius? We’ve beat it out of people so much that all we are left with is Koons and we think he could actually compare with Michelangelo or Monet? Of course, I partially blame the American university system for this; although they aren’t in a vacuum and the English and

Germans are also at fault. If I had to hear the greatness of one more German or English thinker while I was in undergrad, I would have poked my eye out. To these professors – the same ones that perpetuate this myth of science above all – the Italians contributed too). To them, art is nothing. That’s not true – for investment purposes it’s something. And by art, I only mean modern art which I detest and think worse than art – it subtracts from art, it is art’s antithesis and worthy of all scorn and repudiation. I can barely even stand to be in its presence.
