A print media analysis in 44 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Eastern Mediterranean in order to understand one dimension of the climate for evidence‐informed health systems and to provide a baseline for an evaluation of knowledge‐translation platforms.

The focus was whether and how policymakers, stakeholders, and researchers talk in the media about three topics: policy priorities in the health sector, health research evidence, and policy dialogues regarding health issues.

A review of selected research priority setting processes at national level in low and middle income countries: towards fair and legitimate priority setting

New forum HIFA-EVIPNet-Fr was launched at the 12th AHILA Congress in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, the 13th October 2010 to address the information needs of policymakers, researchers and others stakeholders in French-speaking Africa, in evidence informed policy making.

Public health includes policy, practice and research but to sufficiently connect academic research, practice and public health policy appears to be difficult. Collaboration between policy, practice and research is imperative to obtaining more solid evidence in public health.

However, the three domains do not easily work together because they emanate from three more or less independent ‘niches’. Work cycles of each niche have the same successive steps: problem recognition, approach formulation, implementation, and evaluation, but are differently worked out. So far, the research has focused on agenda‐setting which belongs to the first step, as expressed by Kingdon, and on the use of academic knowledge in policy makers’ decision‐making processes which belongs to the fourth step, as elaborated by Weiss.

In addition, there are more steps in the policy‐making process where exchange is needed.

Health‐related research has the potential to improve both the quality and efficiency of health services and bring significant benefits to patients, yet the knowledge produced by research does not reliably find its way into organisational or clinical practice. This results in wasted resources and missed opportunities to improve healthcare. Transferring knowledge into action appears to be a messy process which involves a complex series of interactions between the producers and users of research. We need research that can help us to understand this complex process and can form the basis for assessing the effectiveness of various approaches.

Our research was designed to (1) gain a better understanding of the processes involved in knowledge transfer and (2) produce a template to help researchers, practitioners and decision makers plan and evaluate initiatives for transferring knowledge into action.
