A PIECE FROM… THE PRESIDENT AND GALA CHAIR Welcome to our 13th Gala Performance! Tonight’s concert is a celebration of a milestone year for Resa’s Pieces. Our organization currently boasts over eighty members. We welcomed new “Pieces” into the Band and watched the Strings ensemble almost double in size over last year. Our website has been reorganized with many new features added. Our new logo is displayed on the banners which frame this stage tonight. We are polished, practised, passionate about playing music, privileged to share our music within the community, and so pleased to be playing in this incredible venue. Resa’s Pieces’ accomplishments are backed by a Board of Directors which provides valuable input, direction and leadership. On behalf of the Board, it is my pleasure to announce that we are now proudly supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario. With this assistance, we look forward to sustaining our organization to serve our growing membership and audience while also meeting the goal of performing concerts within the community to engage everyone in the fun. Resa’s Pieces’ achievements can be further credited to our many enthusiastic members who attend weekly rehearsals, practice the repertoire and volunteer their time when playing scheduled concerts within the GTA throughout our season. We thank you for your ongoing commitment to “reawakening your talent” and then sharing it with others. Resa’s Pieces ensembles are led with smiles, patience, TLC and fun by Resa Kochberg, Founder and Conductor of Resa’s Pieces Concert Band, and Ricardo (Ric) Giorgi, Conductor of Resa’s Pieces Strings. Tonight, Resa, as Music Director and together with her dedication to and love for all of her “Pieces”, leads the Band to another new high. Ric’s baton, along with his devotion, led the String ensemble in another remarkable year which culminated with their second

Gala performance on June 3, 2012. Resa and Ric are two special individuals who enrich all of us with their gift of music. We value and hold dear their input, enthusiasm, energy and above all their friendships. Resa’s Pieces would not be celebrating this stellar evening without all of YOU! We are so grateful to all of our Sponsors and Patrons. We thank you for your belief in the Arts and for your ongoing support and generosity. It is with your assistance that we are able to strengthen our vision of enriching others with music. Lastly, we end this year with our objectives successfully having been met as we play to a full house here tonight! Truly, this is beyond all of our wildest dreams. Additionally, on a personal note and knowing that I also speak for many of our members, I feel so lucky to call Resa’s Pieces my second family. Wishing you a wonderful evening of music and FUN! Ruthie Fishman President, Gala Chair P.S. Enjoy a summer concert with us at Mel Lastman Square on June 19 at 6:30pm.

RESA'S PIECES CONCERT BAND MEMBERS would like to extend our gratitude to our esteemed President,

RUTH FISHMAN for her dedication and devotion that has helped the band enhance its vision. We recognize that it’s because of Ruth’s countless hours of work, superb leadership qualities and determination that we have achieved a new milestone in our history. RUTH, YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION TO ALL OF US AND WE THANK YOU.

ABOUT US

Resa’s Pieces was formed in 2000 by Toronto musician Resa Kochberg. Resa’s dream was to form a concert band for adults who wanted to “reawaken that talent” and “rediscover playing music” in an encouraging, supportive and fun environment. The original 18-member band has blossomed into an enthusiastic group of over 50 “Pieces”. In 2010, Resa’s Pieces grew further with the addition of the Resa’s Pieces Strings conducted by Ricardo (Ric) Giorgi. The ensemble’s successful first season also started with 18 members and has now grown to 30 “Pieces”. The String ensemble, following the growth plan of the Concert Band, is already showing great strides in its accomplishments. Both ensembles are made up of diverse groups of amateur Toronto musicians who range in age from their twenties to their nineties. Members who come from all over the Greater Toronto Area rehearse weekly in North York. Many new “Pieces” who have not played their instruments in years or even decades, often express, “wow, it really does come back.” It is no surprise that many founding members have continued playing in the band year after year as “do your best, but have fun” is the mantra. Resa’s Pieces Concert Band has enjoyed showing off their talent and sharing their passion for music with audiences at a variety of venues, including retirement homes, hospitals, condominium social events and places of worship. In addition, both the Band and the Strings hold annual gala concerts in June. Year after year, the ensembles have consistently played to sold out gala audiences, resulting in the

need to book larger venues so that all fans are able to attend. Resa’s Pieces maintains a unique rapport with its audiences with concert repertoire selected to engage everyone in the fun. In addition to the attention that Resa’s Pieces receives from its fans, the Band has received media attention from a number of news outlets, including the Canadian Jewish News, Wholenote Magazine, and the North York Mirror. Most notably, the CBC Radio aired an award winning documentary about the Resa’s Pieces Concert Band in 2010 on Michael Enright’s show, The Sunday Edition, aptly titled “Watch My Stick…PLEASE!” The continuing success and uniqueness of Resa’s Pieces can be credited to the enthusiasm and commitment of the Resa’s Pieces’ Board of Directors, all of the “Pieces” and the continuing devotion of both Ric and Resa. Resa Kochberg has been instrumental in bringing music and fun back into people’s lives.

ABOUT RESA After graduating in 1974 with a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto, Resa taught as a Band Music Specialist for the Scarborough Board of Education until she put teaching on hold to start a family. While raising her three children, she had a “cottage industry” clothing business and taught private piano lessons. Eighteen years later, Resa returned to teaching for the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) where she led workshops as a flute specialist and conducted ensembles for TDSB and at Music Camps. Resa also had the privilege of conducting the Toronto East All-City Concert Band for three years. Currently, Resa enjoys playing flute and piccolo and performs both with the North York Concert Band and the Encore Band. Resa’s past thirteen years have been one of her greatest joys as she shares her love of music with all of the dedicated members of Resa’s Pieces Concert Band. Resa is delighted watching the String Orchestra flourish into its own successful ensemble under the umbrella of Resa’s Pieces. In her spare time, Resa, together with Marshall, are devoted grandparents to five cherished grandchildren.

Artisitic Director - Susan Michaels

THE MUSICAL VOICE OF JEWISH YOUTH The Renanim Youth Singers was founded in the fall of 1999 by Susan Michaels in order to fill the need for providing music education in Toronto’s Jewish Day School System. Since that time, choristers aged 9 to 19, coming from pluralistic religious backgrounds, have united as one Jewish voice, musically representing their peers throughout Toronto. Choristers typically stay in the choir for a 10 year span where they acquire musicianship skills along with a positive sense of Jewish identity and culture, love of Israel and learn the importance of community service. As a result of their Renanim experience, many alumni have gone on to study music at a university level, conducted their own university choirs and have otherwise become engaged in community volunteerism. Known for developing talent at its highest level, Mrs. Michaels brings a world of experience to the task. As an award winning high school educator, Mrs. Michaels was the former conductor of The Scarborough Wind Ensemble, a group of handpicked elite high school musicians who performed throughout North America. She was also a member of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir for 17 years. As Artistic Director of Renanim, she enjoys the added benefit of arranging some of the repertoire for the Choir. Referred to as “The Musical Voice of Jewish Youth,” The Renanim Youth Singers take pride in its many accomplishments as it approaches its thirteenth birthday. Renanim recently completed a five year globally sponsored educational recording project with Koltor Publishing of over one hundred songs selected by internationally partnered rabbis and cantors. The music is now available to teachers in Jewish Day School curriculums around the world to help teach Judaic material of prayers, songs and blessings to children in grades one through eight.

Renanim’s reputation for excellence is multi-faceted. Best known for enhancing countless community events throughout the GTA, The Renanim Youth Singers has also been on two life changing concert missions to Israel and has been the subject of a documentary. The Choir also recorded two highly acclaimed CDs. Bridge of Song (Gesher Shira) won an international Transcontinental Music Publishing competition with Ben Steinberg’s song, Adon Olam. The prayerful and emotionally moving song, Adonai Roi, from the CD, Israel at 60 was used in a documentary about Holocaust survivor, Eva Olsen. Starting in September 2012, the Renanim Youth Singers will have the ability to give high school credits to participating choristers. Having partnered with the private school - Academy C60, enthusiasm has been building for this new program. For information about application for membership, auditioning for the Choir or the new high school credit program, please call 416. 449.2296 or contact Mrs. Michaels at susan.michaels@rogers.com. www.renanimyouthsingers.org.
