Southern African Broadband Market Published on May 2012

Report Summary The research service provides a strategic analysis on the Southern African broadband communications market through highlighting key growth markets such as South Africa, as well as the emerging markets such as Lesotho, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Although operators are facing various challenges, the region is expected to show strong growth in the next three to five years through increasing network coverage and offering innovative data services. The research service also identifies growth opportunities and recommends a broad frame of strategies which add value to operators for developing strategic visions. Executive Summary 'In 2010, there were x million broadband subscribers across the four countries (South Africa, Lesotho, Zambia and Zimbabwe) with South Africa representing Xper cent of the total. oWith a cumulative population of Xmillion in the four countries, this translated to a broadband penetration of less than Xper cent. oDue to declining voice revenue, mobile operators across the four countries are focusing on broadband services through lucrative data centres. oThis presents high broadband growth opportunities in the four countries and thereby in the region. 'The combined revenue of the four countries was $Xbillion in 2010, with South Africa and Zimbabwe accounting for Xper cent of the combined broadband revenues. oThe combined broadband market revenue in the four countries is expected to be $Xbillion by 2017, growing at a CAGR of XXper cent from 2010 to 2017. oThis is attributed to the massive drive and investment by all countries on infrastructure expansion. 'Revenue and subscriber growth were mainly driven by the surge in mobile broadband subscriptions. oAccess to cheaper access devices and cheaper broadband products aids the growth. 'Majority of ISPs in all four countries are concentrated in the main city centres due to infrastructure constraints. oThis is indicative of a largely under-serviced market. 'Thus, new entrants can target unreachable areas in these countries by offering affordable broadband tariffs to both consumers and businesses. 'Lack of wireline technologies has resulted in an uptake in wireless and satellite technologies, with South Africa offering cheap broadband through satellite in the rural areas. 'Key technologies being utilised in the region for broadband connectivity include CDMA, fibre, UMTS, HSPA+, LTE and WiMax. 'Frost & Sullivan expects Satellite and ADSL access to decline during the forecast period in technologies whilst service providers introduce more advanced technologies such as HSPA+ and LTE.
