PERSONAL WORK

PERSONAL TATEMENT Hello, My name is Renee Whiteley and I am a third year architecture student. I was born in Brooklyn, New York, grew up in Kingston, Jamaica and I now reside in Washingston, D.C. Art and technical drawing has been my utmost passion since high school, my only focus was to be successful in architecture. My love for Architectural has grown tremendously since my first day at Howard University. Being at Howard has encouraged me to enter competitions and be actively involved. Pursuing architecture as a profession directs me to a path where the love of art and people can be combined, while offering a service of design and planning. Building art is a synthesis of life in materialized form. It is my goal to not only stand out as an architect but also as an individual, for me creating is a powerful skill, an intriguing ability evolving from our originality and perspectives. By formulating our own unique creations, we may endeavor to create a parallel between our imagination and the world in which we live. This portfolio is the composition of my academic work, it shows what was done in my second and third year of architecture school. This will provide insight on my personality and work ethics.

The main concept behind the design is about axial shifts. How spaces and wall heights shifts, and how it moves to create an interesting atmosphere and structure. How the interior walls are designed, is all about the experience for the users. It narrates where the users move and how they move while they are viewing various art pieces. For this design it is key to create an interesting space, as the site is located in an art zone, right across from the Howard Theatre, and surrounded by many residential homes, a university and hospitals.

Contemplation means prefound thinking about something. A Place of Reflection is a contemplative space that is available to everyone in the community. This beautiful and tranquil site – set in MIAMI, FLORIDA, just along the coast provides a place of commemoration and healing for people coping with loss and everyday life challenges. The site is surrounded by natural bushland, Walking paths, contemplation decks and seating provide opportunities for individual reflection and quiet discussion. The site is softly lit into the early evening, to create a beautiful effect. A place for contemplation is not only a protected space where loss is felt but, it is acknowledged, where loved ones are remembered and where nature encourages the seeking of understanding, healing, hope and renewal.

The project is based upon the concept of yin and yang. Yin yang is widely known as two opposites that complete the whole. Yin is the shady side which is the Feminine energy, while yang is the sunny place which is the male energy. Each relies on the other. Yin is descending, while yang is ascending. The theory of yin yang helps to the define the different grades on the site. It gives a concise explanation of light and dark and ascending and descending etc. Usually, yang is associated with energetic qualities, such as; ascending, expanding, heat, bright, progressing, active. Yin, on the other hand, is associated with the physical form of an object and has less energetic qualities such as stillness, descending, contracting, cold, dark. Yin would represent the below grade.
