A testimony to the early days Beechworth

Today, Beechworth and Yackandandah stand as testimony to the early days of gold mining. Our story however, begins long before the discovery of gold. The hills of Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park and Beechworth Historic Park, and valleys of Yackandandah were occupied by local indigenous clans who nurtured the soils. Their connection to the land and rivers saw them hunt and harvest food from the area. Significant indigenous sites can be viewed such as the Yeddonba Aboriginal Heritage Site just a short drive from town.

Within a year 8,000 miners had swarmed to the area. Amongst the miners were over 5,000 Chinese hopefuls who lived in the mine camps. The Chinese in Beechworth soon formed a community and “Little Canton” was established with its own market garden, shops, joss-house and temple. The Chinese Burning Towers built 1883-1884 still remain at the Beechworth Cemetery.

In time, tents gradually gave way to more permanent structures with the government responding in 1853 to have the town of Beechworth surveyed by Government The lure of gold penetrated far and wide Surveyor, George D. Smythe. Beechworth attracting diggers across the world to the soon became the central town of the Ovens region. In 1852 local shepherd, Howell, with Goldfields, and the administrative centre for California ‘49ers Baker and Strickland, first North East Victoria. A reminder of this time discovered alluvial gold in what later became can be explored in the Historic Precinct Beechworth at Cadman’s Point 100 metres where these superb buildings remain open upstream from the Newtown Falls. to the public. 10

Foundations built on gold Yackandandah

This idyllic setting was soon to be disturbed with the discovery of gold at Whiskey Flat, Kirby’s Flat, Osborne’s Flat and Doctor’s Flat. The towns population quickly swelled to 3,000 as gold fever took hold. Thousands of hopeful diggers set up their tents in rows along the flats and banks of Yackandandah and Commissioner’s Creek. The town of Yackandandah continued to prosper and grow long after the early gold rush days. It even had its own railway station and railway line, which was opened on 23 July 1891 and was in use until it closed in 1955.

Gold Prospecting

Once teeming with fortune seekers, the areas around Yackandandah are still a magnet for gold prospectors in the hills and creeks around Yackandandah.

There are picturesque gold panning and mine sites close to the town that are easily accessible along the Forest Drive route. Recreational prospecting is growing in interest with fossicking with a metal detector a popular pastime.

Indigo Gold Trail

Follow in the footsteps of the prospectors and explore the many gold sites of Indigo Shire on the self-guided Indigo Gold Trail. The trail takes in some of the most picturesque countryside exploring the stories of the gold rush in and around Beechworth, Chiltern, Rutherglen and Yackandandah. indigogoldtrail.com To prospect for gold or gemstones on Crown Land you must obtain a Miners Right.

| Beechworth & Yackandandah Visitor Guide

Welcome to Yackandandah Home to many talented artists and artisans. Yackandandah is brimming with arts, crafts, and music. Perfectly preserved in the foothills of the Stanley State Forest, Yackandandah is steeped in the legacy of gold. Today the town is home to many acclaimed artists, from potters to painters, sculptors to stitchers. Wander the stunning streets of Yackandandah and discover unique artworks, crafts, music and antiques in the eclectic mix of galleries, shops and studios. This idyllic setting was soon to be disturbed with the discovery of gold in 1852 at Whiskey Flat, Kirby’s Flat, Osborne’s Flat and Doctor’s Flat. The town’s population quickly swelled to 3,000 as gold fever took hold. Thousands of hopefully diggers set up their tents in rows along the flats and the banks of Yackandandah and Commissioner’s Creek. Take some time out in Yackandandah to enjoy a relaxed pace, explore the local cafes and breath in the atmosphere of this unique town.

Seasonal Produce

Given our diverse landscape and our distinct four seasons, the abundance and quality of organic produce isn’t surprising. You can taste sensational locally made gourmet pies and savour freshly baked cakes with your morning coffee. A short drive from town is Schmidt’s Strawberry Farm & Winery with hand-crafted strawberry wine and sublime strawberry liqueur. In late Spring and in to Summer you will see fields of full-flavoured strawberries beckoning you to taste.

The area is famous for delicious locally picked berry jams and some of Australia’s finest ice-creams.

Yackandandah is artistically unique Arts and crafts There is something about the valleys surrounding Yackandandah that stimulates creativity. Inspired by their surroundings many award-winning artists have made Yackandandah their home. John Dermer Kirby’s Flat Pottery is home to award-winning potter John Dermer. John has earned international recognition for his design with porcelain, terra sigillata, salt glaze and bespoke gourmet tableware. Benjamin Gilbert Ben’s stunning steel sculpture works can be found in many public art spaces and within private homes around Australia. Charles Sluga One of Australia’s leading watercolourists shares his unique vision and versatility in his paintings. Charles hosts artists workshop to share his passion for painting. Gordon Dickson Widely travelled Gordon likes to paint en plein air (on location) to capture the essence of the landscape. Painting in various mediums he offers painting workshops and demonstrations throughout the year. Yack Station A purpose-built artists’ space providing a practical space for artists to work and a destination for visitors to watch art being made and purchase original pieces.

A step back in time There are a number of National Trust buildings lining High Street in Yackandandah. The surrounding mountainous terrain ensures spectacular views as far as the eye can see.

Nine of these buildings are listed on the National Estate Register; The Athenaeum, Courthouse, ANZ Bank, Bank of Australia, Uniting Church, Holy Trinity Church, Bank/Saddlery, Dean’s Grocery Store and the Stone Bridge. • Start your walk at the historic Yackandandah Post Office built in 1863. This building was originally a timber structure with a slate roof, which was the hub of community activity. • The stone Bank of Victoria building built in 1860, and now home of the much-awarded Yackandandah Museum housing a fascinating collection of documents, photographs and local information. • The Stone Bridge completed the link between Melbourne and Sydney at Commissioner’s Creek in 1860 - when stagecoaches were frequent travellers through town.

Scenic Drives The best way to really experience the spectacular scenery and lovely vistas is to hit the road via our forest drives. To the north west of Yackandandah is the Baranduda Regional Park, resting at the foothills of the Victorian Alps. Its tranquil beauty with eucalyptus and native cypress pine trees, winding creeks, steep gullies and rugged granite outcrops is unsurpassed. To the south west is the Stanley State Forest, home to a variety of native flora and fauna including wallabies, lizards, possums, sugar gliders, echidnas, wombats, bandicoots, the rare brush tailed phascogale and a diversity of birdlife including honeyeaters and rosellas.

Yackandandah Museum A perfectly preserved collection of local documents, photographs and changing displays. Wander through the exhibits such as the old timber cottage and the famous double dunny. yackandandandahmuseum.wordpress.com
